on- one breakaway and jonathan toews buries the one- timer for his sixth goal. corey crawford made 25 saves, and the hawks win 3-1. game two is wednesday night. we'll have more coming up in sports. a 3-year-old girl is found dead inside a home on chicago's northwest side. erik runge joins us *live with more. >> good morning. this is still a developing story. police are still out there at the scene the street is closed off right outside this home as they continue their investigation. this morning we know police were called for an undisclosed reason to the 3400 block around 8:03 p.m.. inside they found the three year-old girl said. we still don't know the injuries that may have caused the death but we do know that the baby was not shocked. police have opened

up a homicide investigation and questioning what they call a person of interest. with still don't know who was home with the baby or the relationship to the baby but we do know that the three year-old girl was found dead when police arrived at the home. that was at about 8:30 p.m.. police are still out here. much more on this story later this morning. for now we are live on the northwest side back to you. >>a south side pastor and activist is taking a new approach to fighting the violence on chicago's streets. pastor corey brooks has launched "brothers on the block" ... an effort to put five thousand men on 500 of the city's most violent blocks to serve as mentors and role models every friday night. yesterday he kicked off the volunteer sign up. >> there is something to be done and we are doing it. older black men to target a younger man's need to sit there on.

>>more than one thousand men have signed up so far. the program begins friday june 6th and will run every friday night through july and august. all volunteers will have to undergo special training. south korea's president is dismantling the country's coast guard because of its response to the deadly ferry disaster. the president says she believes more lives could have been saved. andrew spencer has more. >> with tears in her eyes the president of succory apologizes for the disaster that killed close to 300 people last month. >> again i pray for those who passed away and i express my condolences to the family. >> the ferry listed and sank on the way to the island on april 16th. most corn board were students on a field trip. rescuers saved 174 passengers but officials have confirmed 286 people died. the bodies of 80 others are still missing. if the ship captain was among those rescued, now one of four facing

murder charges. 11 others indicted for abandoning ship and safety violations. today lashing out at the coast guard. >> the coast guard failed to carry out the rescue operation., she says the ultimate responsibility lies on her for the coast guard not responding properly. >> since created, the concentrate on the investigation they had neglected search and rescue tax. >> even going as far as to disband the coast guard sent ocean security and rescue and salvage operations will be passed to a new created the problem of national safety. and other responsibilities passed to police. >>a local iraq war veteran was killed in a crash, hours before he was going to graduate from college. paul davidson the third was originally from lemont and served with the marines in iraq. he was supposed to receive his architecture degree from the university of illinois on saturday.

but hours before the ceremony, davidson was on his motorcycle in urbana when he was hit by a car and killed. he was not wearing a helmet. police say the crash was not his fault. a famous forensic pathologist -- a medical detective -- has passed away. clyde snow is the man who helped identify the remains of nazi war criminal josef mengele, and later, the remains of serial killer john wayne gacy. he also helped identify the 273 victims of the american airlines jet crash near o'hare airport in 1979. in between, he helped gather information on accident victims, and helped police solve numerous violent crimes. snow died friday in oklahoma, of cancer and emphysema... he was 86. a man from the western suburbs faces felony charges, after leading police on a chase that ended in a crash. police say they tried to stop kristian hoddenbach after he was driving a truck through alleys on saturday night. when they approached his truck ... hoddenbach sped off. the chase ended at western and roosevelt where he crashed into another car and a c-t-a bus shelter.

two adults and two children were hurt, but they are in good condition. these two men face felony charges after police caught them trying to steal fire hydrants in the gresham neighborhood. it happened in the 85 hundred block of south loomis. when police arrived, ned carradine and russell mack were trying to put a fire hydrant in a car. another hydrant was already in their vehicle. illinois has recorded america's third case of *mers or middle east respiratory syndrome. it appears, he caught it from the *first man in america to get mers. the first victim was treated at a hospital in munster... he apparently caught it on a trip to saudi arabia. the third man had two business meetings with him. a blood test friday confirmed that he, too, had the mers virus -- even though he didn't get sick. authorities haven't publicly identified either man. huge crowds turned out for san francisco's bay to breakers run. 40-thousand runners signed up and another 100-thousand lined the streets to watch on sunday. the 12-kilometer route runs from the bay to the great highway near the pacific ocean. it features outrageous costumes, quirky traditions and

turkish authorities arrested four people in connection with last week's coal mine explosion. the explosion and fire killed 301 miners in soma, turkey, last tuesday. all of the victims have been recovered. the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation. the coal mining company's operator manager, two engineers, and security chief were all arrested yesterday. officials did not say what charges they face. 25-others were detained and questioned. local authorities have banned protests after crowds blamed the government for weak safety standards. in serbia, the worst flooding in 120 years has already left entire cities and villages underwater. at least 13 people are dead. people are being forced to leave their communities, leaving everything behind. the red cross is worried that

land mines, left over from the bosnian war, may float to the surface, and endanger residents and rescue workers. vale was popular in the 1950's and 60's . he shot to the top of the charts with his hits "al-di-la" and "volare." he appeared as himself in the movies "goodfellas" and "casino" and the h-b-o series "the sopranos." vale passed away at his home in california. he was 83 years old. the first round of cuts is complete for people wanting to take a trip to one-way trip mars. this is video from nasa of mars where these people will live. the "mars one" organization is planning to send four people there in the year 20-24. additional groups will be sent later, but it isn't likely any of them can ever come back to earth. 200-thousand people applied, and now it's down to only 705 people. and i never know if things don't go well somebody may be setting

for a still undisclosed reason last night to the 3300 block around 830. once inside they found a three year-old little girl said. we still don't know the injuries that may have caused that death but we do know the baby was not shot. police have opened up a homicide investigation and are questioning what they are calling a person of interest. with still don't know exactly if there was an adult inside or what the relationship of that adult was up to the baby we are hoping to get more information as the morning continues. for now we are on the northwest side. back to you. >> the south korean ferry disaster has bell led to the end of the coast guard. now they're dismantling this after response to the death. >> i prefer those who passed away and i express my deep condolences to the family. >>south korea's president cried as she apologized for the accident that killed more than 300 people last month.

she said the ability to respond was her responsibility. she also said the coast guard failed in its rescue operation, because it's too focused on investigating and neglects "search and rescue." the coast guard's duties will now go to the police and the department for national safety. north korea's government is also apologizing for a disaster. it released this picture of officials expressing regret over an apartment building collapse in pyongyang last week. as many as 92 families were living there, during its construction, when it fell apart. the government did not say how many people were killed or injured. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. an iraq war veteran from lemont was killed in a crash, hours before his college graduation. paul davidson the third was riding his motorcycle, when he was hit by a car in urbana saturday morning. he was not wearing a helmet. davidson was about to receive his architecture degree from the university of illinois later that day.

and the hawks win 3-1. game two is wednesday night. magic johnson was the keynote speaker at the national restaurant association show at mc-cormick place. he did have some brief comments about being the focus of racist comments by los angeles clippers owner donald sterling. >> these last few weeks have been unbelievable. but am glad to be here and even with all that i still got a big smile on my face. >>johnson got involved in the sterling controversy after he posed for a picture with the clippers' owner's girlfriend. that led to the recorded comments that got sterling banned from the n-b-a. sterling then attacked johnson's character during an interview on c-n-n last week. johnson says this doesn't mean he's going to stop posing for pictures with people. most of his speech focused on his restaurant and food services businesses. the trainer of this year's most famous race horse, "california chrome," says his horse may skip the belmont stakes. he's already won the kentucky derby and the preakness... and he has a chance to become the first triple crown winner in 36 years.

but "california chrome" wears a nasal strip, to help him breathe more easily. and new york -- the home of the belmont -- has yet to grant the horse permission to wear the strip. he's worn one in each of his last six victories. california's governor says they are bracing for the state's worst ever wildfire season - after nearly a dozen fires last week burned thousands of acres and caused twenty million dollars in damages. firefighters have been working non-stop in recent weeks as california's drought and record temperatures create perfect conditions for wildfire. a picture of one those firefighters taking a well- deserved break in san diego has become a viral hit. tim bergon took this selfie and posted it so his wife would know he was o-k. it was reposted on facebook and instantly took off - earning thousands of likes - and plenty of comments offering thanks for their hard work. a walk along a florida beach turned up a very unusual sight this weekend.. it was an elephant taking a dip near saint petersburg. a beach-goer captured it all on camera. the elephant was enjoying the water in front a small crowd..

rove said clinton could have suffered brain damage after a concussion she suffered two years ago. he says that could play a role if she runs for president. >> i am not questioning her health. what i question is whether or not it's a done deal that she is running. she would not be human if she didn't take this into consideration. >> i think he is struggling to be relevant. a guy who took hundreds of millions of dollars from other people and had failure. i think he is trying to be part of the conversation. i think we all know what it is. a cheap political shot. >>bill clinton says his wife is strong and doing great. but he also said it took her six months to fully recover. mitt romney is calling for the resignation of a police official in new hampshire after he admitted to calling president obama a racial slur. robert copeland refuses to apologize for using the slur while at a restaurant in march. copeland is the police commissioner in wolfeboro, new hampshire.

romney owns a home in the town and spends a lot of time there. he says the derogatory term "has no place" in the community. people packed a town meeting last week and called for copeland to step down. they say he has embarrassed the town. u-s stocks bounced back after a volatile week. the dow rose 44 points. the nasdaq gained 21. and the s-and-p added seven. a-t-and-t wants to buy direct t.v. a-t-and-t already controls programming through its own "u- verse" service. owning direct t.v. would give the company greater control over satellite *delivery of that service. the company says the merger would allow it to deliver content to mobile devices, television, laptops, cars, and planes. critics say it would further consolidate the cable and broadband industry, and leave people with fewer choices. government approval of the deal is at least a year away. voters in switzerland have rejected a proposal to introduce the world's highest minimum wage.

swiss labor unions pushed for a 25 dollar minimum wage. that would be about 18 dollars an hour in the u-s, if adjusted for the cost of living. officials say 76 percent of voters were against it. switzerland does not have a national minimum wage. a bad that can be turned into a good dad with a beam of light. they say they've isolated certain neurons in the brain that center around parenting skills making men more nurturing parents. at the same time good mothers can be made more aggressive with exposure to the same treatment. so far it's only been tested on lab mice. >> what is so funny about that? >> you wake up with a flashlight in your ear and durable. >> it's good for the mice. it is foolproof. >> it's all you need. those mice are known for parenting skills. >> don't knock it until you try
