one man is dead after an overnight car jacking on the south side. after remembering those who died, students at u-c santa barbara will be back in class for the first time since last week's deadly rampage. he wanted to fight fires, but first he had to do battle with something else. we'll introduce you to the south suburban man who finally got his wish. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. >> were granted to the stories in the second but first a look at your wednesday morning forecast. >> more rain. yesterday was stormy. i don't know about you but my dog was a bit nervous. >> she should have known you are a meteorologist. >> let's take a look we expect

to see these showers continue. the good news is the cold front which brought the showers and storms yesterday continues to go to the south. it's a slow mover creeping through the region. it will hit the brakes south of chicago but we think it will press self later. the temperature range today. we have temperature ranges of a 11 degree differences. falk will be an issue today. or at a 2 mi. visibility. lansing to a half mile visibility. if it clear at the fog it will get better. showers across each of eastern and central cook county morgue could pop up later today as a front just slowly creep through. today we're up to 60 degrees. early tomorrow morning we are at 56. as we get into tomorrow we

telling us that the detectives here are handling the investigation. there remain on the scene for several hours after the car jacking until early this morning but very few details are being released on what happened. what we do know is just before 10:30 a.m., the victim was driving his black ford expedition in the 2300 block of 80th street when two men approached, shot him in the chest and took off with the car. the chicago tribune says the friend apparently picked the victim up and carried him down the street and laid him down on the sidewalk where paramedics rushed him to the medical center where he was pronounced dead. the name of the victim has not been released. no description of the suspect has been released. if you have the information please call police. >>a man is dead after a driver

tries to take off from police during a traffic stop in elgin. police in elgin made the stop just after five last night. officers discovered the driver was wanted on a warrant from the u-s marshals office for evading arrest. that's when that driver of a white nissan took off. officers say he was speeding when he blew through a stop sign about four blocks later ... hitting a mini-van. that van flipped over several times, killing the driver. >> i heard a loud noise down the street at a high speed and then allowed crash. we just had one last week at the same intersection the car landed the same place give me the same sound. you can't tell the sound of a car crash. >> not chasing the white car when it crashed. the name of that man has not been identified. he was taken to the hospital. a female passenger in his car is also hospitalized in critical condition. some breaking news out of afghanistan ... two americans were wounded this morning when a u-s consulate vehicle was attacked. the u-s embassy in kabul says the vehicle was attacked while traveling through the western city of herat. the americans were *not

seriously injured and are being treated at a hospital. a teenager accused of killing a child while driving under the influence pled guilty to the lesser charge against her, while her trial on a more serious charge got underway. prosecutors say carly rousso was high from inhaling a computer dust cleaner, when she drove her car into a mother and her three children in highland park back in 2012. the accident killed a five- year-old girl. rousso pled guilty to reckless homicide yesterday. but, her lawyers are challenging the d-u-i charge against her. they say illinois law does not list the chemical in the cleaner as an intoxicating compound. rousso faces up to 14 years in minnesota has the same situation. it's not illegal there. arizona, the same situation. not illegal. oregon, same situation not illegal. >> she faces up to 14 years in prison, if she's convicted on the d-u-i charge. she will be sentenced on the reckless homicide charge at a

later date ... it carries a maximum five year sentence. the trial will continue tomorrow. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a volunteer at a northwest suburban church was sentenced to seven years in prison, after abusing two more developmentally disabled boys. robert sobczak received probation last year for molesting an 8-year-old with special needs at willow creek community church. he now says he molested another 8-year-old at the church and a 15-year-old at a birthday party. a driver lost control of his car, jumped a curb and hit nine people ... including seven children. it happened in gary just after four yesterday afternoon. police say the 62-year-old driver said he was making a right hand turn when he lost control. all nine pedestrians were taken to the hospital. the driver and his passenger were also hospitalized. no word yet on any charges. a police officer shot and wounded a man during an attempted hijacking of a megabus heading to chicago. police say the bus was in columbus, ohio, when arsenio rodriguez pointed a pellet gun at the driver and ordered him out. an officer shot and wounded rodriguez and another passenger. police say rodriguez has a history of mental illness and

is being charged with robbery. a 74-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded in the morgan park neighborhood. the bullet was meant for his grandson, an admitted gang member. 18-year-old khalil black told w-g-n, his grandfather andrew hollis was dropping him off at 112-th and throop after a job interview yesterday afternoon, when another car pulled up. >> i heard the police pulled up i looked up and they're already shooting. >> the first shot went right past my face. the other one shot my grandfather in the neck. >>as for the victim, andrew hollis is being treated at christ hospital, where he arrived in serious condition. adding to the drama... khalil black's uncle -- the man behind him in the yankees jersey -- is a chicago police officer. the chicago city council is expected to vote today on a new effort to control the sale of guns in the city. mayor emanuel wants to limit the places where gun shops may operate. at a police awards ceremony, the mayor said his plan would outlaw any gun store within 500 feet of a school or park.

and all gun buyers would have to be recorded on video, making their purchases. >> we are going to do it in a smart, tough and a forceful way to prevent illegal guns in our city. >>the supreme court has given the city until july 14-th to enact any new limits on gun sales. critics say, if the mayor's new plan is too restrictive, the courts could strike it down again. state representative derrick smith's bribery trial will start today, after a federal judge refused to delay the proceedings so he could vote on a tax bill in springfield. the judge denied a week-long continuance, saying smith's attorneys knew the legislative calendar in advance ... and, should not have agreed to start today if there was a conflict. smith was planning to vote for a tax hike extension, a vote speaker michael madigan needs to get the legislation passed. smith is accused of taking a 7- thousand dollar bribe to help a day care operator get a state grant. now that illinois lawmakers have agreed to let governor quinn's temporary income tax hikes expire, they're turning to budget tricks, to buy themselves

time until the fall elections. instead of risking any action that may be unpopular with the voters, democratic legislators are proposing new borrowing... putting off the payment of some state bills... lowering their estimates of state healthcare costs... and postponing a contribution to pay hikes for state employees. the state house passed a new budget that is balanced... at least on paper. the house hopes to adjourn its spring session saturday. it turns out that it is a "buyer's market" when it comes to islands. the largest privately owned island in the bahamas just went up for auction. "innocence island" was once listed for 55-million dollars, three years ago. this time the winning bid paid 17-million dollars. that person is getting 681 acres, a private airstrip with its own airport code, and a five-thousand square foot home, and so much more. the previous owner is terminally ill and says he's pleased with the sale. >> you know demetrius has been in the market for an island for a few weeks.

the university of california at santa barbara attempts to get back to normal after last friday's deadly rampage. one of the victim's fathers demanded change, during a memorial. andrew spencer has more. >> students may go back to their regular routine but that does not mean things are back to normal. flags at half staff _ the mood at the university campus. thoughts of tuesday night's memorial service and last friday's a rampage continued to weigh on the minds of many. six students were killed. >> reading off the names. the suspects roommates, mentioned in the manifesto and stabbed to death inside their home. >> reading names so resisters shot outside their house. >> reading more names.

>> a student apparently shot at random inside a deli. drawing the attention of lawmakers after he accused politicians of not doing enough to keep his son a safe. he said one congress member even called him to express condolences. >> i told the person i was not interested in a phone call from them to express their condolences and sadness. that was not acceptable. until that person went back to congress and actually did something. >> also talking to the crowd of roughly 20,000 people about the victims. readings statements from the other families before talking about his own son. >> fire swept through a hospital in south korea, killing at least 21 people, including a nurse. it happened in the southwestern province of south jeolla hyosarang hospital serves the elderly... and it holds about 300 patients. the fire broke out around midnight local time. intense smoke filled part of the

building... and most of the victims died of smoke inhalation. it appears that the los angeles clippers -- or at least a *share of the team -- will be sold. while owner donald sterling defiantly refuses to sell *his ownership stake, his estranged wife shelly is already preparing to sell *her share. she has met with several potential bidders. so far, there have been no official offers for the team. donald sterling has already been barred by the n-b-a from taking any active role in the day-to- day operations of the clippers. the cubs reveal a revised plan for renovations to wrigley field, saying they are ready to begin the massive construction project in july even without the approval of the roof top owners. the team displayed the updated expansion plans yesterday. the additions include a 30- thousand square foot underground clubhouse - which nearly triples their current space. it also includes four more outfield signs, a second video board, a new club in left field and two new light towers. the cubs president says the team is ready to move forward without the cooperation of the roof top owners, who have fought any changes that would obstruct their views.

satellite's radar composite shows rained across portions of lake county. expressing to the east and eastern cook county still has some showers. some areas that are clearing out are the areas where we have the fault especially west of cook county there just over 1 mi. visibility. 68 degrees by 5:00 p.m.. by 9:00 p.m. we go down to 63. after today, we have an extended stretch of sunshine. 72 degrees tomorrow. friday we had 77. rain comes back sunday. the forecast will matter for monday because we go back to work. >> here's the kennedy. all lands shut down a truck caught fire at division. working to clear this up. initially it was a few lanes but when you look at these pictures, you can see how significant that fire was. the

over 32,000 soldiers currently in afghanistan. yesterday the president announced he wanted the number below 10,000 by the end of the year. those troops will remain for training afghan forces and counter-terrorism missions but not combat. these levels will drop again to 5000 at the end of next year and again by the end of 2016. >> the bottom line is, it's time to turn the page on more than a decade in which so much of our poor foreign policy was focused on the wars and afghanistan and iraq. >> keeping troops in afghanistan after the end of the year is contingent upon their president signing a new deal. the current president has refused of the canada to want to replace some said they would approve it. >> george w. bush spent the holiday weekend in chicago -- getting a new knee. a spokesman for the former president said bush underwent a
