a man is badly hurt in an apartment fire on the south side. we'll have the latest in a *live report. the taliban release video of sergeant bowe bergdahl's handover to the u-s, as questions remain about how he left his post. and a major crash involving a special needs bus shut-down the dan ryan expressway for hours. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm erin mcelroy. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. or pointed to or wednesday morning headline this wednesday. >> and it's still warm. i still have the air-conditioning on. >> still warm right now but temperatures will moderate through the day. our high temperature will probably happen this morning after that temperatures will probably drop. let's look outside.

preconditions showers and even some thunderstorms south of the region. we are going to have when the conditions south of 80. temperatures are staying in the '60s. lukens the rain in the region. the good news is it is just rain right now. the heaviest of the rain is pushing into south central county. as to continue down to lasalle piquancy that heavy rain making its way through. no thunder and lightning. in pontiac it's coming down pretty well. low pressure system a wave that is rolling up. take a look at the powerful storms coming through. this is where the worst is going to be. severe weather we will have the off chance of seeing something stronger today. 71 degrees right now. 66 in

building. tonya francisco is *live at the scene with the story. >> family members are saying the 45 year-old man who was injured was trying to go back into the building to get to his mother foshe has difficulty getting around but in fact she was outside of the building. he suffered burns to his face and his bondshe will be transferreda hospital that deals with a burn patient. no one knows how it started only that it began around 1:00 a.m.. it appears to have begun in a front hallway and quickly spread. family members when they first realized the building was on fire this started to run out the back of the house and waited for firefighters to arrive. >> very heavy black smoke coming

out of the second level. fire all went up the staircase. >> i had a chance to speak with family members who are still here on the scene. they were too distraught to go on camera but they say fortunately other family members live next door so that's where they will stay. once again, the 45 year-old man injured is being treated at holy cross hospital with burns to his face and damage to his linelong spirit he will be transferred to a house bill that deals with burn patients. >>one man is dead after his canoe capsized on the kankakee river. this happened last night, in far southwest suburban wilmington. two other people in the canoe made it to shore. another was rescued from an island on the river. rescue divers used sonar scanners to find the body of a 20 year old man. his name has not been released. the survivors were not injured.

no word yet on what caused the boat to flip over. a high end clothing store, on the gold coast, was just burglarized. it happened at "milani boutique" last night. the store is on the second floor of this building at 65 east oak street. a glass door leading to the stairs was smashed in. we're hearing more than 20- thousand dollars worth of designer merchandise was taken. no arrests have been made. the garbage truck driver who caused a crash that shut down the dan ryan expressway for hours has been issued three citations. the crash happened at 3:30 in the southbound lanes at 95th street. the truck driver who was hauling a container filled with recycled paper ... lost control, hit a wall and then struck a bus, which hit a semi-truck. 38 adults with special needs who were on the bus were taken to hospitals. nobody was seriously injured. the highway was covered with paper and forced the southbound lanes to be closed for more than three hours. the backup stretched for 12 miles. >> it's been blocked off.

everything block off. >>the truck driver has been charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, unsafe equipment and spilling his truck's load on a highway. two metra engineers are the u.s. army is promising a full review of bowe bergdahl, the army sergeant, recently freed after five years of captivity in afghanistan. andrew spencer reports, the army has already determined that bergdahl left his post of his own free will. >> this newly released video shows him less than a week ago surrounded by tall been fighters. one of them waved a white flag as a helicopter approaches. u.s. special forces sweep up checked for explosives and carry him away. as more details come out about his rescue, more questions remain. investigators reviewing his case will interview him but not yet. the army insists the first priority is his health and his reintegration.

been interrogated or met with his family yet because he is still undergoing medical treatment in germany. >> a man who crashed a stolen car into a home in mundelein is also suspected in the death of a woman in far northwest suburban island lake. mundelein police received a call about a robbery at the gale street inn yesterday morning. they say a man walked into the bar before it opened and stole an employee's purse. an officer chased the man as he sped off. it ended when the man crashed into a home. >> he was in possession of a knife and a hammer which he had utilized to inflict several wounds. officers were able to utilize a teaser. >>the man was driving a stolen car that belonged to a woman who was found dead in her home in island lake on monday night. the mchenry county coroner says karen scavelli likely died of blunt force trauma. no charges have been filed against the man in custody.

police are waiting for him to be treated for his injuries before questioning him about the woman's death. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. there was a police shooting in far north suburban zion. police say the suspect struck an officer with his car, before he was shot. the suspect is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. three officers were treated and released. police have not said what led to all this. people in chicago's south shore neighborhood held a march and a rally ... one day after six people were shot outside a laundromat. seventh ward alderman natashia holmes addressed the crowd -- saying "operation wake up" is bringing residents together to stop the growing violence. police say monday's night shooting appears to be gang- related, however no arrests have been made. all of the victims are recovering. police are now naming the bar in wrigleyville where a woman was sexually assaulted. they say the attack happened in a downstairs bathroom at "the irish oak" on clark, near addison. the woman told her friend a man pushed her into a stall in the men's bathroom and raped her. she called police just after midnight on sunday.

the bar gave police its surveillance video. no arrests have been made. a man faces life in prison after the judge gave an accuser until june 12th to refile a suit. he claims that rutherford made unwanted advances. he said it was politically motivated and in time to destroy his campaign for governor. >> a day after learning former congressman jesse jackson junior could get out of prison three months early, prison officials announce he's eligible for a half-way house. he could be placed in one as early as september. prison officials says jackson would then be eligible for home confinement in june. jackson is serving a two and a half year prison sentence for misusing campaign funds. nasa's shuttle program may be dead, but that doesn't mean it has to stop flying. nasa is working on a real flying saucer. it's called a "low density supersonic decelerator," or l-d- s-d. that seems very back to the future. the spacecraft is first

can see much of this. same deal towards kane county. king county is getting pretty good but as to get into candlestick in deal. you can see the rain towards ottawa and south bound. really it's coming down but the good news is no severe problems. that's way down to the south. downtown it's 71 degrees. temperatures are going to change later today. we've had one fifth of an inch of rain since midnight. all the numbers on the right-hand portion will go up today. today's afternoon temperature will be 68. it percent chance of rain. 51 degrees tonight. tomorrow we hit 71 quaeda 76 with sunshine. off and on storms.

a horror website is responding after it was linked to two 12- year old girls, who are charged with attempted murder. morgan geyser and anissa weier are being charged as adults. police say they lured a friend into a wooded area and stabbed her 19 times. the victim barely survived the attack and was found on the sidewalk. police say both girls told investigators they wanted to earn the respect from an internet horror character named "slender-man." the website, creepy pasta wiki, posts horror stories and portrays "slenderman" as its leader. yesterday the site posted that all stories on the site are fiction, and it's up to the reader to realize the line between fiction and reality. the new head of the national security agency is denying that the n-s-a is building a facial database of american citizens. admiral mike rogers says, such a project would require that the agency have access to everything from driver's license photos to passport photos... and it doesn't have that access. besides, rogers says, the n-s- a's mission is to root out

*foreign threats to america, not to target law-abiding citizens. the senate's second-oldest incumbent could be out of office after a close primary race in mississippi. the race between 76-year-old republican senator thad cochran and tea party challenger chris mcdaniel was too close to call last night. mcdaniel had a very small lead over the six-term cochran but neither candidate earned fifty percent of the vote which is necessary to avoid a runoff. senator cochran has served on capitol hill for four decades. the primary may now be decided in a runoff on june 24th. the pull repairman springs into action. he shot this video as he placed a small prairie dog over a pipe and started cpr. he squeezed the animal's sides to get out the water. after a few minutes it started to breathe. he stayed with the prairie dog for about an hour until it was back up and running. our president animal lover just missed the best story of the year because she's too busy

mi.. be on the lookout for that. high potential for that is down to the south. we have seen about one-fifth of an inch in the last four hours. that number will go up. a big storm complex is going on is weakening but it is wicked. cutting through portions of central missouri. we will see a lot of storms reports. this is a classic storm causing some strong wind damage hopefully not but there is potential for tornadoes down to areas of like missouri. that will grace of spirit we get the heavy rain and strong wind to the south but that's about it. looking at the computer model, is doing a good job of handling this system moving it across chicago through the day. we begin to dry out and into tomorrow it is different story high pressure settles in meeting sunshine and

good morning. the black hawks had a day off to think about sunday night. they came back together tuesday for a final time before heading out for the off season. coach says two players may not have played in the finals because of injury. now we see what happens in the summer who goes and who comes. the core of this team is set for a while but that doesn't mean there won't be some changes made. >> there will be some new faces next year. i think the most important thing for us is maintaining the same style of play. it has been successful for us in the last few seasons. we're looking forward and we will not deviate because that's what we do well. >> i like to think we could still be playing right now. a

find the highest amounts of like an inch and a half meanly south of 80 today. strong wind is possible there. in chicago it should be showers potentially a thunderstorm today. areas south of 82 could be seen some heavy cream. 39 getting a pretty good at this hour. the airline continues through east and into kankakee. rain continues to move through at this moment. looking across the region, you can see these complex storms the strongest part is the southern tier whipping through portions of missouri. we will have a lot of storm reports coming from there as we get into that portion of the day. it's 70 degrees at lane park. st. andrews reading at 70. no rain since midnight. we've had a quarter of an inch of rain since the night in these areas. as you take a look at the day planner, we are up to 63 degrees. today's

a tennis ball sized hail was reported. 90 mi. per hour wind reported. >> we're getting our first look at the moment army sergeant bowe bowe bergdahl was handed over to american forces in afghanistan. the obama administration traded five high-ranking taliban members from guantanamo bay for bergdahl's freedom. the handover took place saturday in eastern afghanistan's khost province. bergdahl left afghanistan in a blackhawk helicopter. he's now receiving medical treatment in germany. a preliminary army investigation has already determined that bowe bergdahl intentionally left his post, before he was captured. a full investigation will determine whether he was a deserter. a local soldier who served in the same unit as bergdahl, says there's no question in *his mind that bergdahl deserted... and six other soldiers lost their lives trying to find him. >> for me and my platoon, we've lost two members on a search. to

me they are heroes. >>the taliban gave a heroes' welcome to *its five freed detainees. now, we learn, bowe bergdahl's father created a twitter account, and communicated personally with the taliban, to plead for his son's release. one of the men wanted for attacking v stiviano has turned himself in to police in new york. stiviano's the woman who recorded the comments that led to clipper's owner donald sterling's lifetime ban from the n-b-a. she says two men beat her and called her racial slurs after she left a restaurant in manhattan. her face was swollen from the attack. one man turned himself in yesterday, and police are still looking for one more. stiviano's lawyer says several witnesses came forward, and the assault. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a high and clothing store is progress last night. it happened at "milani boutique," which is on the second floor of this building at 65 east oak street. we're hearing more than 20-

he could be placed in one as early as september. prison officials say jackson would then be eligible for home confinement in june. jackson is serving a two and a half year prison sentence for misusing campaign funds. a federal jury heard more recorded conversations in which former state representative derrick smith is said to have taken a payoff. smith is charged with bribery and extortion, for pursuing a kickback from a daycare center that, he was told, wanted his help in getting a state grant. in one conversation, smith appears to insist that the kickback be paid in cash. in another, an f-b-i informant actually counts out the money. >>prosecutors say smith took the bribe, just days before a primary election, because he was desperate for money to fund his campaign and pay his campaign workers. smith's lawyers claim, the f-b- i informant's testimony is not credible. the trial continues later this morning.

potential for stronger wind. take a look at this cluster of storms. this is a well defined echo. it is cutting the state of missouri in half at this point. strong wind. this is the type of scenario when you see significant wind damage. for us, not as unstable not as much energy. just green with maybe some thunder and lightning. computer model has its hand on this. it moves this out of the area after lunchtime. it won't rain all day. after lunch we do try out. watch out because temperatures go the wrong way. by this afternoon we drop down into the mid-60s. even in some cases the low 60s. 70 at the lakefront. today we made 68 degrees. afternoon high temperature. tonight on the 51 try thursday and friday. has
