likely into wednesday. let's check on the roads. >> we do have some spots for the have construction lending. most of that will last until about 5:00. i will break that down. in terms of accidents we are in great shape this morning. more updates in a few minutes. >>we start this morning with breaking news out of afghanistan ... five american service members and an afghan soldier were killed in southern afghanistan. it happened yesterday in zabul province. there's no official word yet on how the service members died... but local police say the troops were killed by "friendly fire" -- when they were hit by an air strike by allied helicopters while fighting insurgents. u.s military officials have launched an investigation. security is being ramped up in afghanistan ahead of saturday's presidential elections. police in rolling meadows are on the lookout for a parolee suspected in the home invasion robbery of an elderly woman. tonya francisco is *live* in rolling meadows with the story.

>> of police or i should say neighbors say the story should serve as a warning to everyone even though police say the suspect in the case is targeting the elderly. police are looking for this 32 year-old man who tried to break into the home of an 86 year-old woman on sunday afternoon by pretending to be a repairman. that was around 3:00 p.m. at central. police said the woman kept the screen door locked when she spoke to the man but when she walked away he apparently forced the door open, went into the kitchen looking for money. when she confronted him police say he beat her and ran away. the woman suffered minor injuries apparently refused medical attention. she was however able to identify the suspect through mug shots. he apparently tried to get into the home of another and year-old woman on thursday but was scared off when a visitor pulled into the driveway. >> known as a transient

criminal around the area preying on elderly residents he calls himself a home repairmen and then he gained entry into their house to get valuables or to giving him money for fake repairs. >> currently on parole after serving time for residential burglary, he has been convicted in the past of theft. police say he found his vehicle abandoned in a parking lot. crime stoppers it is offering a $1,000 reward. if you have any information contact rolling meadows police. >>one person is dead and another injured in a shooting in park manor overnight. it happened in the 73-hundred block of south perry. authorities say the two were sitting in a parked car when an s-u-v pulled up and opened fire. a woman was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the

hospital. a man was hit in the back and legs ... and is hospitalized in critical condition. three people are dead after a domestic-related shooting on the city's southwest side. police say 36-year-old edward prince fatally shot his girlfriend and her friend ... then turned the gun on himself monday morning. prince held laquisha hickman nicole loving, and several others hostage in a home in the 35-hundred block of west 79-th street. two others were injured a day before the shooting, officers were called to break up an argument between the couple. no arrests were made at that time. new information is coming out about the radical beliefs of a couple suspected of shooting and killing three people in las vegas on sunday, including two officers. andrew spencer has more. >> couple who police say killed two police officers and a civilian in las vegas or once supporters the nevada rancher whose armed militia faced off with government officials over public land rights. a video has since surfaced from an interview on the ranch earlier this year in hindsight, the

hike for one year. the increase is part of a plan to pay down the city's unfunded pension liability. >> the workers are going to lose their retirement we will not make any cuts to any basic services like graffiti removal or anything we will continue to secure the economic future for our taxpayers and taking property taxes off the table for the first few. >>the tax hike and pension reforms do nothing to address pension issues in the police and fire departments, or the teachers' union. still, the c-t-u is already criticizing the mayor and governor for what it considers *stealing* from city employees. taking a look at the *other* top stories this morning. a man in waukegan is now in jail, charged with killing his wife and disabled daughter inside their home sunday night. police say anthony marcus called 9-1-1 and said he had killed them and was going to take his own life. officers found marcus with self-inflicted wounds to his wrists. they say his wife, sun marcus, and their 17-year-old daughter samantha were found strangled.

the family dog was also killed. marcus is in jail on a five million dollar bond. a federal judge held a do-over of a court hearing in the case of terror suspect adel daoud. he faces trial for plotting to detonate a bomb outside a bar in the loop. court workers failed to record a previous hearing on whether the defendant's lawyers will get access to classified government surveillance records. so the arguments were presented *again* yesterday. no decision was made on the release of that information. deliberations will resume today in the federal bribery trial of state representative derrick smith. jurors deliberated for two hours after hearing closing arguments yesterday. smith is accused of accepting a 7-thousand dollar bribe from a day care center seeking a state grant. the developer planning to build on the former children's memorial hospital site says he will wait to learn the outcome of a lawsuit that was filed yesterday, before breaking ground. dan mc-caffery told the sun- times the 350-million dollar project can wait. two community groups are suing to overturn a zoning change approved by the city council. they say the project is dramatically inconsistent with the height and scale of the

neighborhood, and it will diminish property values. the cubs say they will continue to offer free parking at a remote lot on chicago's northwest side, as they seek a special permit from the city's zoning board later this month. the team has requested a special-use permit to operate the free parking lot in the 39- hundred block of north rockwell street. the cubs have been offering parking there for night and weekend games this season but without a permit, as part of an agreement with mayor emanuel and alderman tunney over the renovations of wrigley field. 47th ward alderman ameya pawar says he opposes the plan because it brings one thousand extra cars to the neighborhood. a hearing is scheduled for june 20th. the chicago park district is trying to set a new record for swimming! they plan to host the world's largest citywide swimming lesson. thousands of kids and adults around the world to host simultaneous swimming lessons to set a new guinness world record. more than 70 locations will participate in the event on june 20-th anyone who's interested can register at *chicago park district-dot-com*

a student at seattle pacific university says he's having a hard time being called a hero, for his swift action during last week's gun and knife attack at a campus building. jon meis pepper-sprayed and tackled the gunman, after he had already killed one person and injured three. other students held the man down for police. the attack was stopped, as the gunman tried to reload, and meis is credited with saving lives. he says he finds it a devastating reality that a hero cannot come without tragedy... and he said he prays for the victims' families. a company in oklahoma has for the black pieces of praise for the families. >> a company in oklahoma has created a protective blanket that shields students from bullets... and debris from tornados. the "bodyguard blanket" pad is made of a high-density plastic .... used for ballistic armor. the new material also protects against nails, shards of metal and even bullets from a 9- milimeter handgun.. it also has backpack-like straps that allow you to put it on ... then duck and cover. it costs a thousand-bucks a blanket. a federal judge is refusing to stop same-sex couples from getting married in wisconsin.

the judge declared the state's ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional last week. but, she did not directly say whether county clerks could start issuing marriage licenses. about half of wisconsin's county clerks did anyway, and hundreds of same-sex couples have gotten married. the state's attorney general is challenging the ruling and asked the judge to stop same-same-sex weddings until the appeals process is complete. the judge denied that request yesterday. online video gamers helped save the life of a woman who fell victim to a home invasion robbery as she played a game and chatted with other players. been the i wasn't actually there, i have a friend who does the video games through a web cam. >>that was just one of several 9-1-1 calls made from europe and around the world early monday morning. police in tempe, arizona were notified of the home invasion by the gamers who witnessed it online. police say the victim was seen sitting at her computer when a gunman stormed in. officers arrived and arrested one man, as another fled the apartment.

a tragedy for a family visiting the bay area from utah. a two-year-old boy was killed by a statue that fell friday morning... at san francisco's famous fisherman's wharf. police say kayson shelton climbed a dolphin statue on display on the sidewalk outside the majestic gallery. investigators say the boy's older sister tried to stop him... but the statue fell on him. used taken to this hospital where he was told he suffered multiple injuries. he died. >> co-owner of the kentucky derby has apologized for a ranting made after sunday. >> it's not fair to the horses that have been running their guts out this is a cow words way out. >> now he says he is ashamed of
