make this as painless as possible. they say they will need a significant number of people to take public transportation. there will demolish three sections of the 55 year-old ontario street bridge to make room for a new bridge crews will lower pieces of the old bridge onto the kennedy they will do the work on three consecutive weekends. this weekend from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. monday in bound kennedy down to two lanes from ohio. speed limit down to just 15 mi. per hour. the kennedy handles about 260,000 vehicles per day so this does have the potential to be a traffic nightmare the summer festival season in full gear. blues festival is one of the events happening downtown during the father's day weekend. people need to plan another route. metra and cta will run longer

second floor of the apartment building, but was quickly put out. one person was treated for minor injuries at the scene. the red cross is assisting the residents. sergeant bowe bergdahl is back on american soil. ed payne reports, the former taliban hostage will face treatment at a hospital in texas ... and a lot of questions about why he abandoned his post.// >> on a flight from europe on thursday, according to a senior official he suffers from psychological trauma caused by years of physical abuse. the focus is on recovery. the question on the minds of many is when he will be well enough to answer questions about his disappearance in 2009. at the time, the army concluded he left his post deliberately but he has not been labeled as a deserter. without being able to speak to him, officials had no way of knowing why he left. his return comes amid new insight into his disappearance. thursday two letters were published that he reportedly wrote to his family

from 2012 and 2013 writing about his life in captivity and also criticizes u.s. army leadership in afghanistan. in one letter he refers to an investigation, perhaps into his own disappearance writing if this letter makes it to the u.s. tell those involved in the investigation there are more sides to the situation. tell d.c. to wait for all evidence. now that he is home, the key piece of evidence may come from himself. >>the remains of a soldier from mokena are back in the united states, four days after he was killed in afghanistan. the bodies of private aaron toppen and four fellow soldiers arrived yesterday at dover air force bace. toppen and the others were ambushed by the taliban... and when they called for air support, they were mistakenly bombed by one of their own planes. the takeover of iraq by islamist

militants goes on. the insurgents already control the northern city of mosul. yesterday, they seized control of two more towns in the eastern province of diyala. and they've served notice that they intend to take the capital, baghdad. iraqi security troops are abandoning their posts, rather than face the fighters. the islamists want to establish a new muslim state, covering most of iraq and syria. president obama says he's looking at his military options for helping iraq defend itself. a 60-year-old man was seriously injured, after getting caught in the middle of a shootout between two gang members in the chicago lawn neighborhood. edward walker was helping a neighbor clean out her gutters when shots were fired in the 23-hundred block of west 72-nd street yesterday afternoon. about half-a-dozen rounds were fired before the car sped off. walker was hit twice. >> something has to give. innocent people are losing their lives. >> it doesn't make any sense. the need to put the guns down. >>the car that the shots were fired from was found abandoned a few blocks away. walker is hospitalized in serious condition. one man is dead and another

critically injured after a shooting in the austin neighborhood overnight. three men were standing outside in the 57-hundred block of west augusta boulevard when someone drove up and opened fire. two of the men were shot and the car drove away. a 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital. and the 22-year-old is hospitalized in critical condition. the third person was not injured. bond is denied for a reputed gang member charged with killng a beloved special education teacher. dominique hodrick has a long rap sheet including a felony gun conviction. he's charged with the murder of betty howard last month in chatham. she was hit by a stray bullet while at her second job at a real estate office. prosecutors say hodrick admits he was really gunning for a rival. >> we're happy it's a no bail situation that he's not on the streets. you get a pain in your stomach to see the person who took someone so close to you. >>howard worked full-time as a special education teacher at gwendolyn brooks prep on the south side.

chicago police and federal agents arrested 27 suspected drug dealers in raids on a 12- block area along the eisenhower expressway known as the *heroin highway.* the u-s attorney's office says several gangs were working together to run the crack and heroin operation near douglas park. the investigation into the c- t-a train crash and derailment at o-hare has prompted a review of emergency braking situations nationwide. dozens of people were injured in march when a blue line train jumped the tracks and plowed into an escalator, after the operator fell asleep. investigators said an automated braking system activated, but there was not enough room for the train to stop. now, the federal transit administration is calling on all u-s rail transit systems to check stations for the same problem. they are also being urged to test automatic signals. mayor emanuel is taking on donald trump, in a fight over five big letters. they are part of a giant sign that trump is putting up on top of his trump tower. the final letter is being installed now ... but the mayor calls it "an architecturally tasteful building scarred by an archtecturally tasteless sign." in response, trump tweeted,

the homeland security department is pleading with central american nations to stop sending children through mexico and across the american border. close to 50 thousand unaccompanied kids have already flooded into texas... overwhelming the border guard, and forcing it to pull half of its agents off patrol to take care of the new illegal immigrants. three military bases have been designated as temporary holding facilities for the children. washington is warning latin american parents, the kids are not eligible for a path to citizenship. a career criminal was killed after being released because the jury at his trial made a mistake. bobby pearson had 11 convictions and was on trial for burglary in fresno, california. the jury found him guilty, but filled out the forms for *not guilty* by mistake. hours after he was released, pearson was killed in a confrontation with his sister's boyfriend. the boyfriend was arrested hours later and faces murder charges. a man who created a fake twitter account implying he was the mayor of peoria, has filed a lawsuit. jon daniel says his constitutional rights were

violated when peoria police raided his home in april, took his computer and detained him. he's suing the city, mayor and several other officials. daniel says he created the twitter handle "at peoria mayor" @peoriamayor as a parody, which his attorney says is protected by the first amendment. peoria mayor jim ardis says it's not clear the page was a joke. >> the moment i thought there were 10 or 15 followers the were not my friends it became a joke. >> i'm not thinking it's a tequila and a stripper night. no way for someone to know that what was being said under my name, my picture and my contact information was not coming from me, >>mayor ardis says he might file a defamation lawsuit of his own. college students in wisconsin are competing for the perfect summer job. it's a mail delivery service on a boat. here's the catch-- the boat never stops moving. participants jump off the boat - stuff the mail in the box, then jump right back on.

kennedy construction impacting the in bound it blocked off starting at 10:00 p.m. from chicago to grand. if you're looking at alternates, just avoid the area altogether. you don't have to go into downtown then take the tristate. if you are going into downtown, the big suggestion is take public transportation. think about the park and ride options. driving in, park at the stops and take the train in. judy will have more from that coming out. and a sinkhole in jefferson park that could slow down this morning. it's located at milwaukee and here it's a water main problem that could be the cause of what's going on. they did temporarily cover that up with a metal plate but no word on when it will be fixed. >> a demolition project over the kennedy expressway promises to be a traffic nightmare for weekend drivers... and it all starts tonight. judy wang is live on the

kennedy with a preview. >> good morning. as you mentioned, this does have the potential of being in big trouble headache. that is why the office of emergency management in the downtown merchants are trying to get people plenty of advance warning. the bridge project will have been in three phases with phase one beginning late tonight. from 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. monday, the in bound kennedy from just before ohio will be down to two lanes the speed limit will be 15 mi. per hour. once again, this is happening because they are tearing down three sections of the 55 year-old ontario street bridge to make way for a new one. crews will lower pieces of the old bridge on to the closed lanes of the candy which cause a gaper delay. the kennedy handles about 260,000 vehicles a day and this will be a busy weekend with

here are a few stories that are trending online this morning ... tracy morgan is showing signs of improvement after a crash that left him in critical condition. a spokesperson for morgan says his medical team is optimistic that his recovery is progressing, although they did not specify how. morgan suffered broken ribs and a broken leg when his limo was hit by a truck on the new jersey turnpike last saturday. a fellow comedian was killed. legendary actress ruby dee has died. her career spanned seven decades on stage and on screen -- including her breakout role in the chicago based play, "a raisin in the sun." she often starred alongside her late husband, ossie davis. ruby dee was also an activist... working with dr. king, and in recent years the n- double-a- c-p. ruby dee was surrounded by family when she died at her home in new york. she was 91. harrison ford got hurt, on the set of the new "star wars" movie. a hydraulic door fell on ford's ankle while filming at england's pinewood studios... and he had to be airlifted to a hospital. no word yet on how long he'll have to sit out. but the producers say the film will still be ready in time for

doing great. >> as for what she is doing, every thursday on the lunch break she heads down to the sandwich shop to buy as many boxed lunches and she can then she hits the streets and gives them away to people who need them. >> my grandmother had a church and a homeless shelter. my aunt has a homeless shelter so i needed to do something. i like to feed people sought thought i would start their. >> she just told us one day that she had to go out in her heart and see those people we decided to join her she used her own money to do it and it was like something for all of us we all went out and we were crying just to see the expression on those people's faces when she delivered a lunch to them. and she said it's just because. >> she didn't stop at lunch. she spends hours putting together these care packages even making
