people in mchenry county report seeing funnel clouds ... and there are some downed trees and flooding this morning. the city's world cup viewing party is moving to a much bigger venue for tomorrow's u-s- a -belgium matchup. 1 million people celebrate history at the 45th annual pride parade. good morning. i'm erin mcelroy. dan is off today. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. demetrius ivory has a check of our weather. we have lots of storms. >> and we're not dead yet. some of this damage report is still coming in. let's take a look at how things are looking a. we did have a report of a funnel cloud. we don't have any reports of a touchdown. this was about 145 a year and a just moved out to

crystal lake. close to 215. we do have reports of trees down. six trees 3-5 ft.. this is along route 176 and route 14 and briarwood route. as they continue to watch what's happening, we see thunderstorms weekend but they are still quite strong. potential for some heavy rain. we had one report of about 2 in. of rain as a strong storm moved through. the heaviest of the rain is now headed toward of lasalle county and kendall county. these areas are generally to the west. pianola out there. we are expecting this rain to continue. it could fire up and be strong again later today as another disturbance comes through. the chair for severe weather is high today and tonight this is historic risk area. this is western illinois.

typically when there is a moderate risk there is some strong or possibly severe storms. right now is 71 at o'hare. we have the 3 day forecast coming in just a bit. >> it looks like we have the exit ramp at 90 west a cumberland blocked off at this point. some construction taking place. we will have a breakdown of those hot spots coming up. also look at the changes to the metra electric schedule are now in effect -- it's supposed to improve efficiency. 20 trains will now arrive at millennium station up to five minutes earlier than the old schedule. in all, the schedules of 34 trains will be affected. at least *30 people were shot in chicago since friday night. patrick elwood joins us *live from belmont and sheffield where the most recent shooting happened. >> good morning. a violent weekend in the city. one person was killed and more than 30

others wounded. including the latest shooting happening here on the north side where one man was shot in the arm. not too far from here, about 6:00 p.m. last night two women were shot. police say one woman was 21 the other was 48. both were taken to hospital last listed in serious condition. a witness to that the shooting said it was chaos. >> we reading here and i don't know i looked up and we saw everybody running. we ask what happened. i grabbed my cousin and we ran to the car and lay down. >> when it got up and looked around? >> i saw a guy over there laying down and a pregnant lady came over she was shot in the leg. and another lady was shot also. >> back here live, police remain on the scene. one man shot in

the arm but the big picture here is another violent weekend in the city of chicago. back to you. >>chicago police have issued a community alert after someone tried to kidnap the mother of a newborn baby in the ukrainian village neighborhood. the woman was walking with her baby in a stroller saturday afternoon in the 800 block of north rockwell street. she says a teenager grabbed her and started pulling her down an alley. she was able to get away when a witness confronted the attacker. a teenager who was pulled out of the lake has died. we don't know the victim's name, but we hear he was 16 years old. the victim fell in the lake last night near 40-hundred recreation drive. he was taken to the hospital, but he never recovered. police divers may have recovered another passenger from a deadly boating accident. they found a woman's body about four miles off navy pier saturday night. an autopsy revealed she drowned, but officials didn't release her name.

the sun-times reports she was among the passengers aboard a boat that sank may 31-st. another woman was killed, one person survived, and another is still missing. a man hiking near salt lake city fell hundreds of feet to his death. william pierce, of winnetka, went to a hiking area near a ski resort. his family reported him missing friday morning and authorities found his body later that evening. a photo that pierce sent his wife from the top of a nearby peak helped search-and-rescue officers locate his body. it's the third major fall in the past few weeks-- and it's the second time someone died from the fall. police in new orleans are looking for witnesses to identify two men who got into a shootout that left nine people injured on bourbon street. it happened early yesterday morning. in one instance, gunfire inside the "tropical isle" night club sent people scrambling for cover. one woman was shot in the stomach. outside, more shooting, and more injured bystanders. a man and his girlfriend rushed to help a man who had been shot in the leg.

>> he was shot in the knee. we lifted his pants up i picked up my shirt and my girlfriend tied it around his leg. >> i work in the medical field so i knew we needed a tourniquet and we needed to keep it elevated. >>a surveillance camera captured this brief image of the shooter. new orleans police are asking for help from anyone who can identify either man. two of the nine victims are in critical condition... the rest are stable. violence broke out at two hollywood night clubs as people in town celebrated the b-e-t awards. an early morning shooting in east hollywood... killed one person and wounded five others. and overnight someone at a nightclub was stabbed. the chairman of b-e-t network says the violence was unrelated to sunday's awards event. police are investigating the motives for both the fatal shooting and the stabbing. no arrests have been made. a former corporate executive is expected to become the next head of the veterans affairs department. he is bob mc-donald, a west point graduate and former c-e-o of procter and gamble.

if the senate confirms mc- donald's appointment, he'll face the challenge of reforming the veterans administration. some v-a hospitals were found to be keeping secret waiting lists, and delaying patient care for weeks or months. bob mc-donald would succeed eric shinseki, who resigned last month. president obama plans to ask congress today to approve two billion dollars in emergency funding for security along the country's mexican border. it's in response to the thousands of unaccompanied children entering america illegally. the money would be used to tighten border enforcement, and return the new arrivals to their home countries. more than 52-thousand children have been caught at the border since october. more speed cameras will start issuing tickets, instead of just warnings. cameras near streeterville park, in the 400 block of north columbus drive, are issuing speeding tickets *tomorrow . drivers will be ticketed if they are caught going ten or more miles over the speed limit. meanwhile, new automated cameras will start issuing warnings *today in the 35- hundred block of east 95-th,

near calumet park. the warnings will be issued for 30 days. as chicago's world cup fever grows, the city's viewing parties are being moved to a new location. when the american team faces belgium tomorrow, it'll be carried on the big screens at soldier field. there's enough space there to accommodate more than 60 thousand soccer fans. they'll open the gates at 1:30 in the afternoon... the game starts at 3. admission is free, but parking is not. beer and snacks *will be sold inside. chicago's 45-th annual pride parade had something new to celebrate this year. it's the first one since illinois legalized gay marriage. this couple got married aboard one of the 70-floats at this year's parade. there were also 200-groups including schools, churches, local businesses, and politicians. officials say up to one-million people watched the four-mile parade go through uptown,

lakeview and lincoln park. police say they made eight arrests, including one for damage to a police vehicle. the gay marriage law continues to be an issue in the governor's race. republican challenger bruce rauner says he was quoted out of context when he said he would have vetoed it, as governor. >> that bill is the law. uncomfortable with the law and i do not seek to change that law. it's a controversy that doesn't exist. >> as very proud to sign the law establishing marriage equality. today is a joyous day where we celebrate the great victory. >>a gay rights group targeting rauner hung this banner at one of the busiest corners of the parade. it shows the quote that rauner says is being mis-used. some members of the morning show family were also party of the pride parade. our own demetrius ivory, dean richards, and jeff hoover were among several aboard the w-g-n float. tom skilling and bozo were also there.

in virginia, when a train came along. the man and his seven-year-old daughter were killed yesterday. they tried to stand at the very edge of the bridge, hoping the train would miss them... but there wasn't enough room. the girl's eight-year-old brother survived, when he fell through the rails, into the river below. a popular ride at seaworld san diego suddenly shut down yesterday, because of a power failure. and 46 guests and two park employees spent four hours stranded at the top. a teenaged boy suffered a case of anxiety, and had to be hospitalized. but for everyone else, it was just a big inconvenience. the park was able to shuttle

water and snacks to the stranded riders until technicians could restore the power and lower the ride. several parts of the country were hit with some severe weather. storms hit minnesota and tennessee with continuous rain. some people were trapped in cars and houses, but no major injuries were reported. some roads in memphis are under three feet of water. in saint paul, playgrounds and buildings are partially submerged by rising water. minnesota's governor says this is the worst weather damage he's ever seen. ave never seen damage to this severe and widespread. usually in one or two counties. this is all over the state. >>arizona is going through a severe dry-spell which could fuel a fire in san juan. that fire has burned up about five thousand acres since thursday. firefighters are working to contain the blaze and prevent further evacuations. a woman found her wedding ring that she lost five years ago. it turned up in quite an

unusual place. about five years ago, lois matykowski's ring went missing. she searched the house high and low with no luck... until about two weeks ago. lois says her dog "tucker" got sick after eating a popsicle. as she was cleaning up the mess she looked down and saw that the popsicle wasn't the only thing "tucker" coughed up. i looked in the paper towel and here is my wedding ring. i kid you not. my wedding ring. >>the vet says the popsicle stick may have dislodged the ring inside tucker's belly. an x-ray showed there are no more treasures hidden in there. maybe she was looking for a necklace or matching bracelet? there must be more in there. >> let's take a look at the weather. we have seen some strong thunderstorms. we note the damage that has been reported. there is potential for thunder and lightning across much of the southern and eastern doing areas through the morning as b.c. a few impulse lines of

showers and storms moves through. this one is moving through portions of livingston county and western will county. moving into kankakee county. a continues to press to the east. lots of lightning. heavy rain and potential for some stiff wind. this continues to press toward the east. looking into lasalle county here is a 39. beginning to cross that, south of 80 this is going to be a parking lot for some time. one hour or so as it presses through. most of the storms have been moving through at about 50 mi. per hour. that's enough to jump a heavy amount of rain over the roots in the next hour. here we see the line moving through. the storms are weakening which is the good news. but later today there is great instability many potential for more showers and storms popping up. probably after dinner. early

today we do have potential for strong storms. strong wind, large hail police the possibility of a tornado when you have a storm of break like we could potentially see. another round comes tonight. and we have good news because the storms come in and out monday and tuesday and we try out in time for friday. 73 degrees at the lakefront. today's high temperature is 84 with some spotty storms coming through. we expect to see a picture of 69. after we almost make 90 degrees today we're back down to 69 tonight. tamara's high is 84. when state we make 73. where dry thursday and friday. >> this weather is already causing problems for drivers on the roads. heading outbound on the eisenhower a new crash at york. a car is off in the ditch.

historic baseball day in chicago but the cubs didn't play. the first scheduled off day on a sunday in 82 years. the sox were also dealing with the end of along the 11th game road trip through minnesota. the trip began with one win and seven

"the real world" is coming back to chicago. the m-t-v reality show filmed here once before.. back in 2001, in the wicker park neighborhood. the newest installment of "the real world" will be filmed in the 11 -hundred block of west randolph street.. the former site of "bon v" nightclub, which will be remodeled into living space for the cast. the chicago film office says the series expected to begin production in august and continue over 12 weeks. i'm caught up in the real world.

as 2 in. of rain measured so we are talking about wind damage across the region. that was within one hour 2 in. of rain. looking into portions of livingston county also kankakee county. we watched this line moving through this itself. a traveling to the west, looking into portions of lasalle county on the flip side we have a line continuing to move through. you can see it moves through quickly. read up at 39 is good to be a big issue south of 80 this morning. rainfall amounts, this is since midnight. over half an inch for mchenry. elsewhere we have reports of 2 in.. it mundelein about half an inch. here's the day planner today. the prepared because there will be another round of storms this afternoon. 86 degrees by 5:00 p.m.. the high

the sun-times reports she was among the passengers aboard a boat that sank may 31-st. another woman was killed, one person survived, and another is still missing. the oscar pistorius murder trial resumes today after doctors found that he was mentally stable when he shot and killed his girlfriend. pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. he says he shot her accidentally because he thought she was an intruder. the judge had pistorius undergo a month long psychiatric evaluation to see if he was criminally responsible for his actions. the panel of doctors found that pistorius was not suffering from mental illness. prosecutors requested the testing after a psychiatrist testified that pistorius suffered from an anxiety disorder. an islamist militant group has declared victory in iraq and syria. the group "i-sis" claims its has successfully created an islamic state, in a broad swath of land in northwestern iraq and eastern syria. the group now calls itself simply "the islamic state." a

spokesman delivered a half-hour online speech, claiming that the group had successfully broken down the border between the two countries. this morning, iraqi troops are trying to re- take the city of tikrit from the militants. north korea says it will put two americans on trial for what it calls "perpetrating hostile acts." matthew miller was arrested in april. the korean government claims he tore up his tourist visa and sought asylum. jeffrey fowle was detained in may -- reportedly for leaving a bible in his north korean hotel room. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. grant park is no longer big enough to host chicago's world cup viewing parties. when the american team faces belgium tomorrow, it'll be carried on the big screens at soldier field. there's enough space there to accommodate more than 60 thousand soccer fans. they'll open the gates at 1:30 in the afternoon... the game starts at 3. admission is free, but parking is not. officials estimate up to one- million people attended the

government intrusion. >> our basic point is the government can put a company in a position of choosing between faith and law. >> they want an exemption from the mandate to provide certain forms of contraception pieplant the also known as the morning after pill which the company's owners of view as an abortion. just last year the obama administration allowed exemption for churches and also allowed some religious affiliated groups like church run hospitals to have a third party provide that coverage. but hobby lobby is a private company and legal experts say if it gets an exemption the ruling could have widespread implications like another landmark decision, the citizens united of 2010. >> this case says if corporations are the people this beach rights to the also have free exercise rights? the right to these religious beliefs like individuals do? >> it's so it could be making

things difficult for the government. >> the ripple effect could be far beyond the hca. the government would be in a position to accommodate religious belief across the board it would not stop at health care. >> and should know how much of a splash the ruling will make later today. >>we're now hearing that both parents, of the boy who died in a hot car in georgia, researched on how that could happen. justin harris is charged with murder and child cruelty, for the death of his 22-month old son cooper. harris left his son in a car seat, while he went to work. a probable cause hearing is being held on thursday. cooper was buried in alabama on saturday. his mother told the crowd that she supports her husband and that this was all a tragic mistake. harris also spoke on speakerphone. >> it seems out of character for him. i know people change. it's been 15 years since we've had

contact in the church. people change. but it's hard for me to imagine. >>police say both justin and leanna harris searched the internet on how hot a car needed to get to kill a child. they say the father feared it could happen. investigators did not say when those searches were done. the mother is not charged with a crime. a united airlines flight from chicago had to make an emergency landing, after its emergency slide deployed inside. the flight left o'hare airport to go to orange county, california yesterday. but the plane was forced to land in kansas when its evacuation chute deployed. no one was hurt. passengers say they heard a pop and saw the inflated slide in the back of the plane. >> we heard a loud wastes and then there was a panicked look. they quickly ran to the front of the plane and we all turned

around and the whole back cab cabin with a sap was full of the chute. >> no one is going to the bathroom on the plane got that thethe cause of the slide deployment is under investigation. united says it was not because a passenger tried to open the emergency door. the manager of the handsome felon who's mug shot went viral says she's received death threats over his popularity. jeremy meeks hired gina rodriguez last week because they were overwhelmed since this mugshot went viral. but since representing the gang member, she says she's been receiving dozens of harassing phone calls, including a death threat . rodriguez's office filed a report on friday with the los angeles county sheriff's department. meeks has apparently had offers from modeling agencies and reality television shows. a chicago veteran of world war two was honored by friends and family on a very special day. carl wilson turned 101 years old yesterday. he was inducted into the army in june 1943, and served in the

a gun dealer... at a gun show. krysta gearhart attended the show called "in case of emergency," in bloomsburg, pennsylvania saturday. a dealer was showing gearhart a semi-automatic gun, with a round in the chamber, when it accidentally went off, and shot her in the thigh. she was treated... and no one was charged. the other dealers say it was a stupid mistake for a dealer to have live ammunition in a gun. typically, dealers at gun shows use plastic *replicas for their demonstrations. a doctor has reportedly found los angeles clippers owner donald sterling mentally fit and capable of running his business. c-n-n reports the doctor found no signs of dementia and no indication that sterling couldn't manage his affairs. this comes after his wife, shelly, had two other doctors declare him mentally incapacitated. that would give her the power to sell the clippers. but donald sterling is fighting the sale. a hearing on that matter is being held today. the trial over sterling's mental capacity is scheduled for next monday, but sterling wants that postponed. toronto mayor rob ford returns
