has confirmed that five tornadoes touched down during monday's storms. downed power lines electrocuted a man in burbank. chicago beaches are deemed unsafe to swim after monday's storms...caused sewage to flow into the lake. good morning. i'm dan ponce. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m. erin is off today. let's carry to the forecast. it's the mansion >> we do have a woman just in case. encasing it equality. >> we're still talking about monday's storm. >> we're talking hundreds of trees that were done in our area. we will have more on that

kept screaming get in the bathtub. >> we've lost the whole offense. a lot of damage to the house but we are alive. >> the quick rush and the roaring sound. and it was over very fast. >>residents in the towns that were hit by tornados hit are still dealing with downed trees and power outages today. a man was electrocuted by downed power lines in southwest suburban burbank. the 21-year-old man was visiting family on 86th and meade yesterday afternoon, when he came in contact the lines. he was found in the backyard. he's been identified as nedel doleh. an autopsy will be performed today. com-ed workers were in the area to repair power lines that came down during monday's storm. com-ed says nearly 97-thousand customers are still without power this morning. most of those are in the south ... including in plainfield, where nancy loo is live with the latest. >> crews have been working

nonstop and power was actually restored to the majority of the area overnight. but outages remain including here along lincoln highway where the traffic lights are out. many customers are read here have now been without power for well over 36 hours. the national weather service confirmation of a tornado touching down here is likely no surprise to those who heard and saw the storm system that moved through monday in less than an hour to storm toppled hundreds of trees, polls were down, power lines down everywhere. hundreds of crews for or on the job in the south suburbs working 16 hour shifts to repair all the damaged poles and lines. another day of nice conditions will help process. in the meantime everyone is recovering from the screening system. >> and and

>> we heard the wind going round and round. the trees were really moving. i told my fiancee to get away from the window and literally seconds later the trees snapped and then it was rain and wind and lightning. >> we just saw quite a convoy of trucks just a short time ago. they're working as quickly as possible hopefully to have everyone back up on line by tomorrow. live in plainfield. back to you. >> a sinkhole caused by the heavy rains swallowed two cars in kane county. check out these pictures: it happened early yesterday morning on thomas road in burlington township. sheriff's police say a ford taurus drove into the washed out road and plunged into a ten-foot-wide sinkhole . a 41-year-old mother and her 15-year-old son were trapped. then .. a chevy pickup tried to pass through and drove over the taurus.

emergency crews rescued the victims in the taurus. they were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the driver of the pickup was treated at the scene. and the storm kept swimmers out of lake michigan. there is a ban on swimming on chicago beaches due to concerns about the water quality. heavy rains overloaded the sewer system and stormwater tunnels causing sewage to flow into the lake. swimming will be allowed again when test results show it's ok. no word on when the results will come back. there's a temporary delay on the riverwalk expansion project because of flooding. heavy rains raised chicago river levels, putting the construction area under water. work will resume once the water is drained or pumped out. the plan calls for a new walkway connection under the dearborn street bridge. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. hammond school superintendent doctor walter watkins is in critical condition, after suffering a severe beating at the hands of a home invader. when the power went out during monday night's storms, someone broke into watkins' home, beat him up, and stole his car. his sister discovered him, badly wounded, when she stopped by the home yesterday morning. three men were robbed at a

blackhawks practice facility. the victims were walking in monday night, when they were approached by three robbers. one of the robbers hit a victim with a gun and then demanded their money and belongings. the robbers got away, and no arrests have been made. chicago police charged a 13- year-old boy with attempted murder and aggravated battery, after three other teens were shot. it happened monday evening at 97-th and lowe. two of the victims were critically injured. the suspect's name isn't being released because he's a minor. if you recognize this man, the f-b-i wants to hear from you. the bureau calls him the "no boundaries bandit"... because he's robbed seven banks in a wide range of locations since mid-may. the most recent holdup was june 25-th at a "t-c-f" branch at 53-rd and pulaski. he didn't display a gun... but on other occasions, he did. there's a 5-thousand dollar reward if you can identify him. a sting operation is underway to catch drivers who don't stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. state law has required that for the past four years. but there have still been three-thousand incidents of cars hitting people, in the

city,so now undercover chicago police officers are posing as pedestrians, to see if drivers stop for them. the ones that don't, get pulled over and get a ticket. yesterday was the first of sixty stings planned for this year. if you live in chicago, and own a car, you should have your new city vehicle sticker by now. but if you haven't, the city is giving you a break. it's extending the june 30-th deadline until july 7-th. if you buy your new sticker online by next monday at "c-h-i city clerk dot com," you'll avoid any tickets and late fees. you can also get your sticker at the city clerk's office. >>team u-s-a's run at the world cup ended with one last party. 28-thousand fans went to soldier field to watch yesterday's game against belgium. the game was scoreless when it went into extra time.. but then belgium scored twice before the u-s got its only goal. final score was "two to one," but fans left the stadium proud of the team's efforts.

the chief suspect in the terror attack in benghazi is scheduled to appear before a federal judge on hearing on whether he can continue to be detained and is controversy over the handling of the terror group. >> alleged mastermind behind the attack has now been sitting in a jail cell awaiting trial. that has sparked a big debate not only on the hill but here in chicago on whether the suspected terrorists should be treated as enemy combatants or as defendants on trial. >> less than two weeks after his

capture prosecutors laid out there to page in that indictment in a courtroom. he pled not guilty to conspiracy charges that could be meeting life in prison for the suspected terrorists. on the hill, outcry with the senator leading the charge. >> there has been a tendency to treat this like a law enforcement matter, read them their rights and get them a lawyer. i hope they are not doing that. the most valuable thing we can get from this is information. >> others lobbying to have him moved to guantanamo bay with other suspected terrorists rather than to a civilian trial. an idea from the chicago attorney. >> it is preposterous. >> represented numerous times both in chicago and at guantanamo. >>. in that case in june 2008. they don't even have a trial date yet.

real nightmare. diane stretton was fired last month by the bracamonte family of upland, california... but she refused to move out. a judge said she was fired improperly... and police said the family couldn't kick stretton out without an eviction notice. she agreed to move out by july fourth... but the family said, they'll be on *vacation for the holiday weekend. stretton says she's been depicted unfairly. >> they were the ones tried to exploit me as if i'd was some poor migrant worker from a foreign country i didn't get lunch breaks i didn't get coffee breaks. i didn't get any holidays basically i was working 24 hours a day. >>stretton is already on california's statewide list of people who filed lots of frivolous lawsuits. a grandmother plans on spending a lot of time on her kayak, but it's not for exercise. it's for the people of guatemala. deb walters plans to kayak, from maine to guatemala, to raise

awareness for the families there. that's 25-hundred miles. walters says she's inspired by the people she visited in guatemala city nine years ago. she said conditions are so poor that families pick through garbage to survive. >> they said their wish was that their children would be able to go to school, learn to read and have a better life. that simple wish just broke my heart. >>walters volunteers for the organization, "safe passage," which helps the poor send their children to school. she hopes her trip raises money for that cause. she estimates going from maine to guatemala will take about a year, but she has no idea if this will work. that they look at your forecast coming up. >> i think we are hoping for anything except what we got on monday. five tornados confirmed by the weather service. a few teams were out there. a fairly large number. we only get a few

holiday. t-mobile is accused of ripping off its customers. the federal trade commission is suing the company for making hundreds of millions of dollars off "cramming." that's when third parties place charges on t-mobile bills for services that the customer didn't authorize. some of those charges are not listed on bills. the f-t-c accuses t-mobile of collecting these fees, even when it was clear that they were fraudulent. t-mobile says the lawsuit is unfounded and that it has given refunds to affected customers. an ordinary fishing trip wound up with a rare catch. these guys were fishing off canada's prince edward island, when they caught a blue lobster. experts say the color is caused by a genetic mutation. but it's so rare that it's found in only one in "two- million" lobsters. other than it's blue shell, this lobster is no different from ordinary ones. that looks good. it looks tasty. >> those poor lobsters. we see them and we think a dinner. let's look at our day. temperatures are on the cool

weekend. we are expecting to see nice conditions coming through. some showers are still possible today but after this afternoon we tryout. not expecting any rain until saturday. in east chicago right now it's 55. in chicago are high-school reading at 55. crystal lake reading at 60 degrees. satellite and radar composite shows skies will clear up. we did have some light showers overnight. there is the potential for more showers today but not a high chance. nothing too heavy. 62 degrees by 5:00 p.m.. 9:00 p.m. down to 59. typical high is 84. we will be lucky to make 70 degrees. back up to the mid-70s on thursday. fourth of july will climb to 77 and we are dry. >> so far so good a few exceptions out there with a slow

overnight, a lot of customers have been without power for nearly two days. the national weather service confirmation of a tornado touching down here is likely no surprise to those who heard and saw the storm system that moved through on monday. in less than an hour hundreds of trees were toppled pulling down power lines everywhere. hundreds of crews are on the job through the south suburbs working 16 hour shifts to repair all the damage polls and warrants. many residents are recalling the frightening system that caused the power problem. >> i heard the wind blowing around. the tree in the front yard was swaying. i told my fiancee get away from the window. seconds later the tree snapped. and then it was just rain and wind and lightning. >> a lot of residents around here are using generators. they

either bought them or rented them. the power company hopes to have everyone back up by tomorrow. >>taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. chicago police officers gathered, early this morning, to remember a fallen colleague, at the very spot where he was killed six years ago. officer richard francis was shot to death with his own gun after a scuffle on a c-t-a bus at belmont and western. his killer, robin johnson, was sentenced in february to life in prison. she said she has no memory of the shooting... but she said she deserves to be in prison. former governor george ryan has even more freedom now that his probation is over. ryan was released after serving five years in federal prison last year. he was convicted for a truck driving license scandal during ryan's time as secretary of state. the corruption was revealed after an accident killed six children in 2008. scott and janet willis' children were killed when their van exploded after it ran over a piece of steel that fell off a truck. ryan tells the sun-times he has never stopped praying for the willis' children. he also says he does not feel

responsible for their deaths. gubernatorial candidate bruce rauner has released tax records that show he was able to reduce his income tax bill through special tax breaks. rauner made most of his money through his private equity firm. and like many wealthy private businessmen, most of his income came through capital gains, not salary. capital gains are taxed at only 15 percent... wages are taxed at a much *higher rate. there is nothing illegal about the tax strategy, though the i- r-s has recently started reviewing it. indiana doesn't recognize same- sex marriages. but a judge says the state must make an exception for one couple. nikole quasney and her partner amy sandler were married in massachusetts, but they live in munster. quasney is terminally ill with cancer... and doctors say she has only weeks to live. yesterday, a federal appeals court ordered the state to recognize the couple as wife and wife. new jobs are coming to the city's south side... thanks to whole foods. the grocery chain is investing 12 million dollars into building a complex in the englewood neighborhood. it's all a part of mayor

emanuel's plan to help reduce the so-called "food desert"- an area where residents lack access to fresh fruits and vegetables. mayor emanuel was on hand as officials from the store broke ground yesterday at the five acre site on 63rd and halsted. the upscale grocery store is we don't want it to be an island. we want to be part of a community. >> it complements the investment into the college. and the senior housing complex. >> the upscale grocery store is expected to be completed in 2016. the city hopes the store will spur other development on the 13-acre site it has dubbedmayor emaniel says the city will spend more than 10 and a half million dollars to prepare the site, including new roads and sewers. one home is surrounded by flood water, but the owners have a way of getting over it. clay and virginia ruggles' home in minnesota has the mississppi river right in their back yard. their front yard is covered too, with about three feet of water. you can only reach dry land by

residents of a california community rose up in protest against a plan to bus a new batch of young illegal immigrants into their community. so the plan has been scrapped. ed payne has more. >> with american flags flying over their heads, more than 100

protesters blocked them from the homeland's security. they try to bring roughly 140 undocumented immigrants into the city. the migrants came from texas where facilities have been overwhelmed by an influx of undocumented immigrants. many unaccompanied children. authorities are racing to find facilities to accommodate them. the protesters say they don't want them there. >> i am here to have them sent back home. >> some protesters encouraged others across the country to follow. >> if they go anywhere else, stop them. it's what's right. >> the situation grew even more tense when a group of counter protesters confronted the crowd. >> we build your homes! we do your plumbing! >> their forced to retreat. heading to a nearby border station for the time being. what happens next is not clear. city officials say they are told to expect 140 immigrants every 72

hours. the next group is scheduled on friday. according to the l.a. times the mayor has urged residents to speak out against the decision to process migrants in the city. but at a meeting on immigration later on tuesday, he. to call the waters. >> i want to encourage everyone to keep in mind that these are people. these are citizens. they are fleeing areas that are less than desirable. there is a process to make sure that that process is in force and that people are here. >> a food truck exploded and caught fire in philadelphia last night. 12 people were injured. the force of the blast sent parts of the truck, and a propane gas tank, flying across the street, where they set a passing car on fire. nearly two million infant car seats will be recalled, for a potentially dangerous problem with their seat belt buckle. the seats are made by graco. the national highway traffic
