>> fourth of july vacationers fled the beaches in north carolina on thursday as the hurricane comes to shore. it made landfall near cape lookout shortly before midnight. waves as high as 35 ft. were reported. officials warned the storm if it had moved farther inland and the predicted. >> we had concerns about people who were inland may be impacted by potential flooding and river's going over the banks. >> parts of wilmington flooded after more than 1 in. of rain fell in an hour. most seemed to be heeding the warnings. >> you just have to be prepared. if it gets to a point where you need to go, you need to go. >> as arthur moves north more states are getting ready. in virginia beach, sand dunes are built to prevent flooding. some vacationers canceled reservations and others packed up and left before the storm got there. changes to the fourth of

nancy loo is live at the o'hare oasis with the latest.. nancy? >> police are using electronic message board along the tollway system in hopes that it will help in this manhunt. after a setting last night near rockford. a strong indication that the suspected murderer is still in the region. >> the manhunt intensified at his car nationwide with police releasing this new photo, is the 36 year-old leaving a record store. believed to be in possession of a blue camping tent and driving a gray nissan altman with a sticker are back and a custom plate, bragmn2. it belongs to the 44 year-old woman who was found murdered at a rest stop in sterling on tuesday. he's also suspected in the murder of his friend, a high-

school friend and co-worker in rockford. authorities say the suspect was spotted by a sheriff's detective from 7:00 p.m. last night near a store north of rockford. >> detectives indicated that when he spotted the vehicle he turned around and the driver of the vehicle fled north bound very fast. >> no reported sightings since then. anyone who spots the suspect or the car with this license plate is urged to take safety precautions and called 91 immediately. >> in a related development, the suspect's wife was granted an extension on an order of protection and she told a judge about the increased drinking and gambling of her ex and she said she feared for her life. >>

chicago police are on the scene of a deadly shooting this happened around 230 a m near the corner of 63 and demon. his 34 year-old man killed, another wounded in critical condition. one woman was killed, another injured, in a shooting on the west side near garfield park. the two women were sitting on a porch in the 38-hundred block of west monroe yesterday afternoon. a group of men in masks drove past in a blue sedan and opened fire. authorities say the shooting was in retaliation to a botched drug deal that happened earlier this week. they do not believe the women were the intended targets. >> i feel bad because there are girls. lots of kids. nobody cares but just trying to get revenge. maybe the ridges of the wrong place of the wrong time. >> the 22-year-old woman died of a gunshot wound to the head. and the 21-year-old woman his hospitalized after being shot in the arm. no arrests have been made.

a former chicago bull as the charged with attacking a woman at a health club. police say rick brunson grabbed an employee at the "life time athletic center" in vernon hills on june 25-th. he's now charged with criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery. brunson played for several n-b-a teams, including the bulls from 2002 to 2004. he is currently a candidate to be a new assistant coach at temple university. brunson has not commented on the charges. a jury acquitted a former high school basketball coach charged with sexually assaulting an underage student, and attempting to assault another. prosecutors accused kevin jones of using his position to take advantage of the 17-year-old girls. one of them said she had sex with jones in a motel, which he denied. he was found *not guilty yesterday. jones was a varsity basketball coach at epic academy charter high school, but he lost his job when he was charged last year. governor quinn enters the july fourth weekend under federal investigation. a grand jury is demanding emails of five people who helped run quinn's controversial 54-million dollar anti-violence program. launched during quinn's re-

election campaign four years ago, the program has been characterized as little more than a political slush fund for the governor. the program's former director and four other people are being targeted by the grand jury subpoenas. a quinn spokesman says the governor's office is cooperating fully. jon burge gets to keep his police pension. the former chicago police commanders is in prison, for lying about the systematic torture of suspects, to get them to make phony confessions. still, the illinois supreme court voted 4-to-3 yesterday to let burge keep collecting his 3-thousand dollar a month pension. a police board approved it, but attorney general lisa madigan challenged it. illniois' new pension law could be in trouble after a state supreme court ruling on health benefits. in a "six to one" ruling, the court ruled that subsidized health care premiums for retired state workers are guaranteed by the state constitution. the case involved a law that let the state charge retirees for health benefits that were supposed to be free. some say that puts the new pension law in doubt because it changes cost of living increases and the retirement age. but governor quinn and attorney general lisa madigan says this ruling focused on health care and not the larger issue of pensions. there are lots of fourth of

overpass bridge collapsed near one of the venues for the world cup in brazil. one car was crushed, and two buses were damaged by falling chunks of concrete. the overpass is four miles from one of the stadiums that's holding a semi-final match on tuesday. the cause of the collapse is under investigation. but brazil has been criticized for not meeting construction deadlines in time for the games. the pentagon is grounding its entire fleet of nearly a hundred f-35 fighter jets, after one of them caught fire in florida. the f-35 is nicknamed the "lightning two." it has a single engine... and it's part of the military's most expensive weapons program, the "joint strike fighter." the fire broke out june 23-rd at eglin air force base, as the plane was about to take off. the pilot wasn't hurt. *all f-35's will get a

>> everything is looking good on the roads. >> several people have been displaced after a patio collapsed in the west town neighborhood. it happened in the 14-hundred block of w chicago around 1 a-m this morning. the entire concrete section between two apartment buildings fell 10 feet into the basement. nobody was on the patio when it collapsed. but three people had to be rescued by emergency responders. authorities are not sure what it sounded like an explosion. we went outside it was a big hole in the backyard. we're lucky it happened at 1:00 in the morning and people were not out in the back because if anyone was in there it could have been a disaster. >> authorities are not sure what caused the collapse. a building inspector has been called out to look at the damage. hurricane arthur has come ashore. arthur made landfall around midnight near cape lookout, north carolina... packing 100- mile per hour winds. that makes it a category-two storm. it moved farther inland than state officials had expected...

georgia. a judge denied bond to justin harris, for the murder of his 22-month old son, cooper. harris says he accidentally left his son in his car, while he was at work. cooper was in that car for seven hours before his father found him dead. prosecutors say during that time, harris was at work, sending sexual messages to other women. >> he had up to six different conversations with different women it appears from the messages. >>police say that before his son's death, harris read several internet articles about being child free and how to survive in prison. harris and his wife both admitted to researching how hot a car needed to be to kill a child. they had two life insurance policies on their son, totaling 27-thousand dollars. accused of hiding two women's bodies in suitcases and leaving them near lake geneva. the former police officers case goes to trial. a judge ruled today there is probable cause against steven zelich. detectives say zelich admitted he killed both women separately, and on accident, while having sex.

he is charged with two counts of hiding a corpse. he could still be charged with homicide. more voices are being raised, in the fight by northwestern university football players to unionize. yesterday, the university called upon the national labor relations board to overrule a regional director who said the players are entitled to union representation. three congressmen and three senators have now joined the call for the ruling to be reversed. and yesterday, the n-c-double-a filed a friend-of-the-court brief, siding with northwestern, and saying the players are *students, not employees of the school, and shouldn't be unionized. wrigleyville rooftop owners say they're ready to settle their long-running dispute with the cubs over wrigley field renovations. but are the cubs ready too? the rooftop owners say they will not sue the cubs - *if the team sticks to it's original plan of installing two signs. but the cubs released a statement today, saying they are moving forward with a revised plan, that calls for *seven signs. the landmarks commission will address the revised plan next week. beginning this fall... all chicago public school students will have free breakfast and lunch at school. c-p-s will be fully reimbursed for those meals by the

government because of high number of students living in poverty in the school district. a typical lunch for students costs about 2-50. school officials expect to serve 72-million meals to students when school is back in session. alderman deb mell is divorcing her partner of almost three years. she made the announcement on twitter. mell made history by becoming the first elected state official to have a legal gay marriage. she and christin baker joined in a civil union in august of 20-11, in iowa. she was a state representative at the time. the politician in japan breaks the mold with this. >> speaking in japanese and crying. you don't need an interpreter to note that this elected official is really sorry. he's accused of misusing public funds. he spent

thanks to the june job report -- showing 288-thousand jobs were added last month. and... the unemployment rate fell to six-point one percent -- the lowest level since september of 2008. the dow jones closed above 17- thousand for the first time. wall street will take a break today for the july fourth holiday. the largest poultry producer in california is recalling some of its chicken products because of a salmonella outbreak.
