tomorrow night scattered thunderstorms are possible sunday with slightly cooler temperatures high of 84. then it gets cooler as we get back to work next week. need more in the 74 cast in a bit. >> so far so good on the roads. no major delays or hot spots. we have overnight roadwork lingering in bound kennedy as a travel in bound at ohio, 3 great plains are blocked. they will be blocked until about 5:00 a.m.. >>a woman from arlington heights drowned while saving three boys.karen wessel was on vacation at her sister's summer home in far northern wisconsin. they went swimming on tuesday with a female friend and their children. three boys, including wessel's son, swam across a narrow channel dividing the main shoreline from a sandbar ... but got too tired to swim back. the women went out to help them.wessel reached the third boy and kept him above water. but, she also got tired and went under.

a boat came by and grabbed the boy wessel was helping. her lifeless body was found soon after. >> it's important to me that in the universe other people know there are still heroes in this world and sadly, i suffered a great loss. and little boys lived. >>wessel is survived by a 9- year-old son and 17-year-old daughter. a west side teenager goes to court today... charged with murdering an 11-year-old girl over a gang grudge. judy wang is live at the criminal courts building with more. >> good morning. police identified the known a gang member, faced misdemeanor charges in the past those charges were eventually dropped. he has no convictions on record. 19 years old he appears in bond court charged with first-degree murder. his mother says she

graduated from high school and was working a summer job at a north lawndale community organization. the superintendent says investigators dan nine witnesses some of them saw him fire the shots in the 3900 block last friday night. police say believe fired four-five shots in an attempt to preempt tallied against rival gang members in connection with an earlier fight. one of the bullets went through a bedroom window and hit a 11 year-old girl in the head. shoes at a sleepover there were making and eating some wars when she was shot. news of the charges came the same day a restaurant held a fund-raiser to help pay for the funeral costs. the family thinks those who attended for support. >> wishes want to give thanks to everybody who really helped out. moving for to get this case on a roll. >> the mayor and the governor

attended a fund-raiser. the police superintendent says people in the community knew who was responsible and came forward and that helped lead to a quick arrest. police have not found of murder weapon. >>lake county, indiana officials announced murder charges against a suspect in the shooting death of a gary police officer earlier this month. 25-year-old carl blount has been in custody for two weeks, while investigators built their case. they say blount shot officer jeffrey westerfield on july 6th, his 47th birthday, after he responded to a domestic dispute. the gun has not been recovered. westerfield's family is thankful a suspect is in custody. blount has a long wrap-sheet, including battery of law enforcement, strangulation, and drug possession. >> we miss our dad. he was a great police officer. i wish my dad was still here but knowing that he died protecting the people that he loved, people of this city makes me very proud to be his daughter.

>>if convicted, he could be sentenced to up to years. prosecutors are deciding whether to pursue the death penalty in this case. 16 people are dead, dozens more wounded, at a u.n. refugee shelter in gaza... the latest casualties of the 17-day-old war between israel and hamas. palestinians took cover at this shelter in a former school. a rocket slammed into the playground... most of the victims were women and children. hamas claims that israel fired the errant rocket... israel says it may have been a *hamas rocket. the u.n. and the united states are trying to broker a humanitarian cease-fire, to give people a chance to evacuate the area. bad weather apparently brought down an air algerie passenger jet over mali. the plane changed course, just minutes out of an airport in burkina faso, to try to avoid a storm. but less than an hour into its flight to algiers, the plane went down, with 116 people

aboard. the burned wreckage of the crash has been found, about 30 miles from the border of burkina faso and mali. most of the crash victims were french. an american, listed on the flight manifest, didn't actually board the flight. a man long suspected in the 22- year-old cold case murder of a skokie boy has finally been charged in the killing. the body of 15-year old niles west high school student david cherick was found in a forest preserve near morton grove in 1992. he'd been strangled with his own scarf. 71-year old robert rocco serritella was arrested in los angeles early this week and appeared in court yesterday... handcuffed to the crutches he now uses. investigators say he incriminated himself in conversations. >> he's made numerous statements through the years different inconsistencies but to the course he also made third party and missions to other individuals in california if you

hear but he has spent most of his time in california. all of it just reinforced all the different things we already had. >>seritella waived his right to an arraignment. an l-a judge issued a warrant for his extradition back here. he's being held without bail. an o'hare airport employee will appear in bond court today on charges of stealing from military footlockers being shipped overseas. 41-year-old james matthews faces two felony theft charges. chicago police and a postal inspector set up surveillance cameras after reports of items missing from footlockers. matthews was reportedly seen on video taking a laptop and other items. letters start going out today, to 9 thousand people who received questionable traffic tickets from chicago's red light cameras. the letters will explain what people can do, to appeal the tickets, and possibly get their money refunded. an investigation found suspicious spikes in the number of tickets issued at several intersections. the city is investigating whether the tickets were due to faulty equipment or human

tampering. metra riders may soon be allowed to bring pets on board... the commuter rail line is considering allowing small pets in travel carriers. the policy change would bring metra in line with c-t-a and other rail lines nationwide. the agency will seek input from a citizens advisory board today... the pilot program would be tried-out on weekends.... on the rock island line, from chicago to joliet. first lady michelle obama is waking up in chicago this morning. she attended a fundraiser for the democratic national committee in the gold coast yesterday afternoon. mrs. obama talked about gun violence in chicago, telling donors democrats will make it better for young people in the future. while that was going on, hundreds of protesters marched for immigrant and refugee rights near the obama's home in kenwood. they also prayed for families affected by deportation. the first lady's motorcade was spotted outside soldier field last night, where beyonce and jay-z were performing. the sun-times reports she went

a psychiatric patient reportedly killed a case worker and wounded a doctor before the doctor pulled his own gun and shot the suspect. it happened in a hospital office building in suburban philadelphia. police say 49-year-old richard plotts opened fire after an argument erupted during an appointment. the doctor suffered a graze wound to his head. plotts was hit three times in the chest and torso and is in critical condition. the hospital has a no guns policy for anyone except law enforcement. a man from alabama went to a hospital for a circumcision... but got a whole lot more. the victim is suing princeton baptist medical center, because doctors amputated his entire penis. he scheduled the circumcision to eliminate a potential cause of infection. the lawsuit claims, the hospital performed the full amputation with no medical justification.

the hospital says the lawsuit is without merit, and it plans to fight all charges. police have solved an unusual mystery in southern california. some parents called authorities after finding porcelain dolls that look like their children on their doorsteps. that's not creepy at all. they were left at eight homes in san clemente throughout the week. the dolls were wearing nightgowns and lace dresses, leaving some parents to wonder if they came from a sexual predator. but, police announced late last night that they were left by someone who just wanted to spread good cheer. a woman in new jersey is making her 20-million-dollar lottery jackpot.. a win for the whole family. sigrid endreson will share the winnings with her 16 siblings... and the three children of her late brother.. the 20-million comes from a pick-six drawing last month. playing the lottery was a tradition started by the sibling's mother. the winning ticket was also purchased with left over family funds used to pay for the

delayed families could only wait for the recovery process to be completed. >>a couple and their 13-year-old son were killed when a tornado tore through a campground in virginia. state police say more than 13- hundred people were at cherrystone campground in cape charles, when the storm hit cash yesterday morning. the family who died was from new jersey. they were killed when a tree fell on their tent. a woman who was camping next to them says they were very sweet people. >> they came here for family time. >>30 more people were injured by falling trees and overturned campers. president obama meets today with the presidents of honduras, guatemala and el salvador. he'll try to convince them to send a stronger message that their countrymen should stop sending their children across the u.s.-mexico border. obama wants congress to approve more than 3 and a half billion dollars of emergency funding for the border crisis. but house republicans say, too little of that money is designated for actual border security.

separately, the white house is considering accepting applications from honduran children to enter america as *refugees. ohio state university has fired its marching band director for failing to prevent an environment which condoned sexual harassment. jonathan waters was let go after a parent reported objectionable traditions, including band members marching across the field in their underwear under the supervision of the staff. the school conducted a two month investigation. under waters, the band became known for its intricate marching formations. former bears cornerback and bellwood native ray mcelroy is doing his part to counteract violence and gang activity for kids in at-risk neighborhoods. his pro football youth camp is kicking off its eighth season. the camps feature three days of *free hands-on professional instruction from former n-f-l players. mcelroy says the goal isn't really to train kids for the pros, but to help them build character. >> ultimately for me these kids are making the decisions and

making productions in the community. that's the most success. >>while mcelroy's team only gets three days with the children, he says nearly 75- percent of them make a commitment to refocus their lives toward education, family values, and faith. nasa says earth barely missed being hit by a solar storm. after the most powerful space storm - since in 18-59 - happened in 20-12... nasa says earth is lucky. they say if it happened one week earlier.. our planet could have had more damage than the 19-89 storm.. which knocked out power across quebec.. instead.. the storm cloud hit the stereo-a spacecraft.. an observatory used to measure such events. experts say there's a 12- percent chance a storm that size will happen again within the next 10 years... so they say we got lucky this time ... what you think of that? a close call. >> power outages. that would have been huge. how the upper '40's here? most everyone else is in the fifties under clear skies. you'll see the clouds

the dow jones and the nasdaq lost about 2. the s-and-p gained nearly a point. chicken mc-nuggets are temporarily off the menu at mc- donald's restaurants in hong kong. a meat processing plant in shanghai was caught mixing *expired meat and poultry with fresh cuts, before shipping it to mc-donald's and other fast food chains. all of the questionable chicken has since been removed. but anything with chicken won't be sold at any mc-donald's in hong kong, until investigators can be sure it won't happen again. more than a third of children and teens in america are

overweight... but many of them don't see themselves that way. a new study shows almost a third of kids between the ages of 8 and 15 put themselves in the wrong weight category. and nearly 40-percent don't realize they have a weight problem. previous studies also found parents often don't realize when their child is abnormally heavy. being overweight or obese can cause cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes, among others. here are a few stories that are trending online this morning ... the nfl's 2-game suspension of baltimore ravens running back ray rice for apparently knocking his fiancee unconscious has talk shows and social media buzzing. security video at an atlantic city casino showed rice dragging janay palmer out of an elevator in february. charges were eventually dropped and the couple have since married. the nfl has given longer suspensions for pot smoking and illegal tattoos. the suspension and fine will cost rice over 700-thousand dollars. the new batman is already making his first public
