clouds. we're getting closer to average. we could have some early afternoon showers. but not a green belt. 57 degrees in the union. it's 61 along the lakefront. the skies had cleared out. a few scattered storage hours popped up yesterday and overnight things have settled down now. a few showers could come back later on. that flow continues to keep us cooler than average. or going to throw in a 20 percent chance for a scattered showers by midday. many of us will not see it but we will see those showers and some isolated thunderstorms. 83 tomorrow. a spotty showers or thunderstorms. a better chance on friday. >> everything looks good out there this morning. dealing with roadwork because one of those

so it should make getting out of bed later today a whole lot easier. as a throwback to the studio, it's not always the fastest race for those who keep on running. they're back at it again 7:05 p.m.. back to you. >> the coach i always wanted ...three men were rescued after their boat capsized on lake michigan. rescuers received a distress call just before eight last night. they found a 19-foot sailboat overturned near montrose harbor, where a number of boats were racing to return as a big storm was moving in. the men were not injured. new developments overnight in the war in gaza. another u.n. school was hit this morning. palestinians were taking refuge there. 19 people died, and 125 were injured. the death toll is now more than 12 hundred in more than three weeks of fighting.

the palestinian authority wants a cease-fire... but hamas refuses to stop its rocket attacks on israel until israel calls off its *blockade of gaza. israel and egypt say the blockade is their only hope of slowing the flow of *weapons into gaza, and into the hands of hamas. investigators will try to reach the malaysia airlines crash site for a 4-th straight day. they've had to turn back because of fighting between ukraine and rebels in the area. andrew spencer has more. >> the sounds of violence in the distance stop investigators from reaching the aircraft. >> we needed two-thirds of the other day. once we got there it was clear the bombing was extremely heavy. at one point we have to take cover next to our vehicle. >> nearly two weeks since the suspected missile took the airlines out of the sky. officials say there still could be human remains among the debris. observers have reached

the site before but the teams did not include the dutch investigators in charge of finding out what happened. those investigators along with a dozen australian experts have not seen the wreckage. >> everyday is another did lost. we could be losing those human remains and the crucial evidence. >> the u.s. and european union accused russia of training and arming rebels and perpetuating the crisis. the president announced tuesday the u.s. and the eu would enforce new sanctions. >> a very specific issue related to russia's unwillingness to recognize the ukraine can chart its own path. >> not just the u.s., the the you moved as well that's what's impressive. >>crews in california have been working through the night to clean up after a massive water main break flooded sunset boulevard and the u-c-l-a campus. a 93-year-old underground pipe burst yesterday afternoon, and

was spewing water for several hours. officials estimate that up to ten million gallons of water was lost. numerous buildings on the u-c- l-a campus were flooded, including the pavilion where the basketball team plays. a school official says water on the courts reached eight inches deep. several people also had to be rescued from a flooded parking lot on campus. a teenage girl was almost abducted in the chicago lawn neighborhood. that happened near 63-rd and saint louis monday afternoon. a 16 year old girl was walking alone, when a white pick-up truck pulled up to her. that's when one of the passengers got out and tried to force her into the truck. the girl was able to break free and run away. the man, and two others, fled in the truck. no arrests have been made. three people were shot, and one man stabbed in the neck, within a block of each other on the near west side. the shooting happened just before ten last night, in the 200 block of south western avenue, near what used to be "felony franks" hot dog stand.

police say a 49-year-old man was shot once in the chest and died at the hospital. two teenagers were shot in the legs. the stabbing happened in the 24- hundred block of jackson. it's unclear whether the shooting and stabbing are related. bond is denied for a 15-year- old boy charged with the shooting death of a 16-year-old on the south side last week. prosecutors say rasaan price shot darren foggey, junior through his bedroom window on july 23rd. police say the shooting in the 67-hundred block of south artesian avenue was caught on surveillance cameras. price appeared in bond court yesterday. the family of a murdered chicago police officer is outraged after finding his killer coaching kids baseball on the far south side. john mathews was beaten to death in 1988 by a group of five men using baseball bats. one of those men, dean chavez, was convicted in the murder and served 11 years in prison. chavez has been coaching little league baseball in the hegewisch neighborhood for years but was recently fired after mathews' family learned about it and complained to the league's national office.

something is messed up with their standards if they think that's what they can give these kids, a murderer as a coach. a cop killer as a role model for young teenage boys. it is beyond disgusting. it's a slap in the face to every law enforcement officer out there. >>the little league board is holding a public meeting tonight in hegewisch to address the matter. the mathews family is calling for the board's removal and a change in the by-laws so a convicted murderer cannot coach a team ever again. jane byrne's legacy as chicago's first and only woman mayor may now be permanently commemorated, with a *park named for byrne. the chicago city council is expected to vote today to rename the park around the chicago water tower, "jane m. byrne plaza." byrne's daughter kathy says her mother has always been inspired by the water tower, because it survived the great chicago fire. aldermen praised byrne's contribution, as the park plan cleared the city council finance committee.

deadliest outbreak of ebola spreads in west africa. the c-d-c says it has not been detected in the u-s, but a few americans were infected overseas. doctor kent brantly is reported in grave condition. he and nancy writebol got sick while working with missionaries in liberia. patrick sawyer is the first american to die in the outbreak. he was flying from liberia to nigeria, when he collapsed. his wife and his daughters live in minnesota. more than 670 people have died he just wanted a better liberia. he wanted to take his part in making that happen. he fought being there was how to do that. >> more than 670 people have died. the world health

organization confirmed more than 800 ebola cases in west africa last week. but it also projects that unreported infections could bring that number to 12-hundred. a teenager in africa tried to stow away on an air force cargo jet to germany. but when the plane landed, he was found dead. the boy had managed to evade airport security, perhaps in mali, and climb into the plane's wheel well. the plane can fly at altitudes of six miles, where the air is icy and oxygen is thin. a ground crew at ramstein air force base found the boy's body above the plane's rear landing gear. his nationality is still unclear... and he could have boarded in any of five countries. two women were nearly killed on a railroad bridge in indiana. the close encounter was captured on camera. a coal train almost hit them. you can see them running for their lives. it happened early this month on a bridge 80 ft. high. the train's engineer put on the emergency brakes. when the train stopped

the white sox are just hanging around in the wild card race but when they play like they did last night in detroit you wonder if they might not have a prayer of catching up. the tigers had the early lead but then the seventh inning, bag's packed not for long, that's when a triple hit a fence and everybody scored on a double and the sox take a 6-2 lead. and there goes the number 31. he had three hits and four not in. seven in the seventh, to more in the eighth and put one on the tigers' 11-4. the cubs and rockies hook up again 3-1 in the fourth. my guess is he's good to be a cop for about 36 more hours played

well tonight a 33 tie and that's where it stood in the 16th inning. bases loaded its deep enough to score the cubs catcher baker who not only scores the winning run, he was the winning pitcher, a nasty night at wrigley as they went 4-3. derrick rose looking mobile as the men's national team went for another tough day of practice. rose says he's not only ready to make this team is already looking ahead to the nba season. he says it's been a very productive off season. >> it's been great. you think about winning championships every that experience to our team and being around all these players, giving them advice i think that's all we needed. you had brooks and everybody else coming into the mix, i think for gore to be a strong contender. >> that's morning sports.

>>a bit of a down day on wall street... stocks didn't do much tuesday. -the dow lost 70. the nasdaq lost 2. and the s-and-p fell eight. smarter, more educated consumers buy generic brands, according to a new study. researchers at the university of chicago and tilburg university in the netherlands say they tracked purchases from 125-thousand homes. they found that when it comes to pharmacy and food items, least informed consumers usually bought name brand products, thinking they would sacrifice quality if they bought the generic. but nine out of ten pharmacists and doctors bought generic over name brand aspirin. researchers say americans are wasting $44 billion per year by name brands. a businessman who held a meeting at a five-star hotel in london, is wishing he went somewhere else. edward heaton ordered three bottles of sparkling water at the crystal bar of the wellesley hotel. he expected to pay a little more for the bottles that usually cost about 2-dollars each ... but, not *this much more! heaton was billed 127-dollars ... if you convert this receipt, which is in pounds. the water came out to about 28- dollars a bottle. then, he was charged a "minimum

getting a new definition for the term marathon man. six hours and 27 minutes. nearly two games. topping the old mark of six hours and 10 minutes the cubs played back in 1982. another 16 inning game played earlier in april, this one was longer. cubs fans from far and wide with missed a game they will never forget. >> unbelievable. celebrating our one month anniversary now on the 30th. visiting from toronto. what are the odds of a huge fan. unbelievable. got to sit in the front row for that. it was for three. i have the video. life is a blur but all good.

supplied by russia. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. the death toll from the war in gaza is now 12 hundred, after the deadliest day of fighting yet between israel and hamas. another u.n. school was hit this morning. palestinians were taking refuge there. 15 people died, and 90 were injured. hamas won't accept a cease-fire offered by the palestinian authority. it's demanding that israel end its *blockade of gaza. crews in california have been working through the night to clean up after a massive water main break flooded sunset boulevard and the u-c-l-a campus. a 93-year-old underground pipe burst yesterday afternoon, and spewed up to ten million gallons of water over several hours. numerous buildings on the u-c- l-a campus were flooded, including the pavilion where the basketball team plays. a man is dead and two teens injured after a shooting on the near west side. it happened just before ten last night, in the 200 block of south western avenue. police say a 49-year-old man was shot once in the chest and died at the hospital. two teenagers were shot in the

legs. another man was stabbed in the neck, just around the corner in the 24-hundred block of west jackson. police aren't saying if the shooting and stabbing are related. a man from palatine is now charged with murder, in a july 18-th fistfight outside a bar that killed 26-year-old ryan flannigan. flannigan tried to intervene when some other men started fighting. police say michael platt, also of palatine, threw a punch that knocked flannigan to the ground and cracked his skull. platt is due in bond court this morning. the chicago city council is expected to enact new regulations on where medical marijuana may be sold in the city. yesterday, the council's zoning committee endorsed a proposal to allow no more than 13 marijuana dispensaries. they would be banned in transportation corridors, manufacturing districts, near parks or forest preserves, and in any building that includes housing.

once the new regulations are passed, the first dispensaries could open next year. the chicago city council is expected to vote today to increase the city's telephone tax more than 50 percent. if approved, everyone with a land line or cell phone that is billed to a chicago address, can expect to pay a dollar forty more a month for each phone line - that's an extra 16.80 a year. a city committee approved the hike yesterday. mayor emanuel and virtually all the aldermen support it, to avoid a politically unpopular property tax hike. the increase would take effect september first. governor quinn says he's not bothered by a poll that has bruce rauner way ahead of him. a poll taken monday says rauner is ahead of quinn by 14-percent. that poll was conducted by a group that was founded by one of rauner's donors. quinn says polls supported by political types are "phony baloney." he says polls also had him losing in the last election. he then pointed to other recent polls that has him in a close race with rauner. the republican-controlled house is expected to pass legislation today, authorizing a lawsuit against president obama ... accusing him of exceeding his

powers in enforcing his health care law. but, they insist it is not a precursor for impeachment. >> this whole talk is coming from the president's own staff. and from democrats on capitol hill. they're trying to rally their people to give money and to show up at this year's collection. with no plans to impeach the president. >>house democrats raised one- million dollars on monday, after the impeachment rumors surfaced. the patient scheduling scandal at the veterans administration was even wider than expected, according to a new v-a audit. schedulers at v-a hospitals were interviewed. almost *half of them say they two people were swept and lost for 17 hours near green bay earlier this month of kayaking. the kayaker rental company call for help with it didn't come back. the found them and rescue them. reunited yesterday.

the first time the n.c.a.a. is dealing with concussions agreeing to a $75 million settlement to end the lawsuits. the athletes would not be able to file a class action in the future and most of the money would go toward diagnosis of current and former players. also has money for concussion research and sets new guidelines on how to treat infected players. >> this was one of the first times the organization has said these young men and women are getting hurt while playing for us and we must do something for them. it's truly a breakthrough in the history of college sports. >> in the proposal they admit no wrongdoing and they're not putting money toward treatment. a federal judge will rule next month. >> if you stories trending this

morning, espn has suspended one of its personalities for what it considers insensitive remarks about spousal abuse. the man on the left is the host of first take, he was discussing the suspension of trade race for beating up his wife in an elevator. he suggested there are things a woman can do to avoid provoking domestic violence. he is sidelined until august 6th. >> singing >> releasing their first duet from the new album. they were singing anything goes. the new album comes out september. the filmmaker confirms the hateful 8 will be made after all. it was derailed after the script was leaked on line. he said
