alike. lots of work out this morning. by 5:00 it should be picked up. >>a burglary, turned hostage drama, continues to unfold at this hour in suburban harvey. two adults and two children are being held in a home, which is surrounded by police. erik rung is live in harvey with the latest. >> could morning to you. negotiations are ongoing out here. we are told by the sheriff since 1:00 a.m. that they have been communicating with the hostage-takers. here's what we know. at least one gunman and most likely a second are holding two women hostage as well as to children. they're still in the home. this all started around 1245. one of gun

men, possibly to came into a home with the guns. at the time at least eight people were in the home, six were children. all under the age of 13. so far for a bush children have been released. we also note to police officers were hurt. one was shot in an exchange of gunfire. and we are told he does have not life-threatening injuries. the other officer was not shot and is expected to be ok. not sure how he was injured. we are learning this could have been about money. but authorities are not willing to confirm that yet. meanwhile, the home is surrounded in the neighborhood is on lockdown. >> what is the next step? >> we are of the impression that if we can continue to reason with people that people

will understand and people have been reasonable so far. with gun for of the kids out and hopefully through the sustained efforts people understand and no one will get her. one wants to hurt anybody. just something that needs to be brought to resolution. >> we have been getting regular updates from authorities out here and we are expecting to continue to get the updates through the morning. just to recap, a least one gunman, possibly a second in the home of the two women and two children hostage. >>one person is dead after a police-involved shooting on the far south side. it happened at about 9-40 last night... on the 133rd block of south forrestville avenue. police say a man was riding a bicycle in the neighborhood when they attempted to stop him.

police say the man pointed a gun at the officers. spokesman pat camden said police opened fire in defense. >> the individual shot is in no net gain member from the information i've been given and as i mentioned, the investigation continues. >>no officers were injured in the shooting. protests in ferguson, missouri were mostly calm, compared to what they have been since the death of michael brown. last night's protest thinned out as it got later. the crowd appeared to be going along with requests for protesters to stay inside at night, so the criminals would stand out. police arrested 47-people and seized three guns. >> of those citizens took heed not allowing the criminalist that mask himself in a peaceful protest, protista early and went home early and allowed us a better visual.

>>funeral arrangements have been made for michael brown. he will buried next monday. the reverend al sharpton will deliver the eulogy. four people from chicago were among those arrested in ferguson this week. charlie coffeen is from logan square, but he spent sunday and monday protesting. he tells the chicago tribune that he was trying to walk away when police in riot gear detained him. coffeen says he was released from jail yesterday and not formally charged with a crime. stay with wgn for the latest on the developing situation in ferguson. you can also get updates all the time at *wgn t-v dot-com slash- ferguson.* islamist extremists in northern iraq are out with a new video which appears to show the grisly execution of an american journalist. and andrew spencer reports, "i- sis" is threatening *another american captive, as well. >> these images taken from a video we won't show. in it, james fully read a message

presumably written by his captors blaming america for his death. the captors then kill him. a u.s. citizen working as a freelance journalist fully disappeared in november, two dozen 12 pyrrhic reports were the gunmen in assyria forced him into a vehicle. his family has not heard from it since. >> a tragedy of riches beyond imagination. no words to describe this. >> signs of grief outside the family's house. after his death his mother wrote, we have never been prouder of our sun. he gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the people. >> it's a devastating and awful. >> it's a horrible situation for any family. >> the group showed another american journalist threatening to kill him as well. if the u.s.

doesn't and his u.s. military operation. the demand came one day after u.s. air strikes helped security forces retake the important damage from the militants after a weekend of fighting. the white house says the president has been briefed on the video and the threat and he will continue to receive regular updates. >>james foley got his master's degree from northwestern university's medill school in 2008. northwestern released a statement saying, "the medill family is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the murder of james foley." the statement characterizes the attack on foley as "an attack on freedoms necessary in a civilized society and across strained cultures." and it says foley's murder dramatizes what it calls "the risks implicit in shedding light where inhumanity can take hold." we're learning more about the finances of the woman who was murdered on vacation in bali. the sun-times reports that, in 2011, sheila von wiese-mack netted more than 300 thousand dollars from a lawsuit against a cruise line, over an injury sustained by her late husband.

police are holding her daughter heather and heather's boyfriend tommy schaefer in her death. heather mack and her mother had a stormy relationship. but it's not known whether her mother's *money was a motive for the murder. chicago teachers union president karen lewis says it's going to take more than a million dollars to defeat mayor rahm emanuel...but... lewis said last night she would be happy to use the one-million dollars the american federation of teachers is offering her to do so. the national union helped new york mayor bill de blasio capture the mayor's office in that city with union funds. a couple of recent polls have shown lewis with a lead over emanuel. jackie robinson west continues to advance in the little league world series. >> the neighborhood is glued to the tvs.

yesterday we were able to get for hostages out. the 11 year- old who was released last night has been very helpful with negotiator in determining what's inside. as you know from the beginning we were highly dependent upon the suspect. now we have credible information as the victims have come out. negotiations are fluid. the negotiators for doing a wonderful job. the sheriff is to be commended for his team who are here. still roughly around 19-20 agencies are on site. 200 police officers in the area. the entire block to which this house presides has been evacuated for safety. our concern and our priority is to get closure. in a peaceful manner. we have two children and two adults who are

still hostages inside the home. we are going to be very careful in how we give out information because yesterday we had a successful day with your help and this morning the want to get off to an even better stars. the officer was released from the hospital yesterday he is at home with his family. the other officer injured is also home in good shape. but from our city's standpoint, we won't rest until those children and adults are out of that home. i will take limited questions i don't want to jeopardize or compromise the integrity of our negotiations. >> what we know about the suspects? >> are not born to talk much about that we will have more when the scene is down. i don't want to put more information out. >> question about the sirens. >> as time winds down obviously

of a possible burglary. a neighbor gave us a call. our officers responded and noticed to offenders at that residence. there was an exchange of gunfire. two of our officers were injured. one was wounded. i want to thank the police department because they were on the ground and they drove the officer away so no other harm could come to him. but the subject realized at that point that officers were there and they took hostages. we surrounded the home. neighbors and police showed up and 26 agencies and later found out the situation. our plan is working. everything is fluid. all the agencies are working together and we are working to a peaceful resolution and the know that's what everyone wants. >> the hostage negotiation team? >> it's the state and our local

agencies combining in the effort. >> have you been able to get food or water? how'd you know that the hostages are okay? >> the hostages released. to be in physically good shape. the negotiation don't want me to reveal too much but just to say that everything is fine as relates to physical health. there to into a nearby hospital for observation. i think it's more, mentally and is a physical. >> do you have an open phone line? >> i don't want to describe the technique that they are using but i will say they are in constant communication right outside the house and both parties are in contact with each other. >> how far away are you? >> a few blocks to the west and a half a block south. any other questions? i do want to say this, for your traffic personnel

wishers who came to the hospital here wants to say thank you for your prayers and concerns. i want to be limited at this point. i will come back in about half an hour let's and the question for now. >> that was the her spokesperson with an update on the hostage situation. more than 200 officers are on the scene. the sheriff is leading those negotiations. >> will keep our eye on that and bring you the latest. >>a new video from islamist militants in iraq appears to show an american journalist being beheaded. an "i-sis" sent a message with the video that another american captive will face the same fate unless the united states calls off its military airstrikes against "i-sis" targets. they forced freelance photographer james foley to read a message blaming america for his death. foley was kidnapped in 2012 while covering the civil war in

syria. the militants don't want america backing iraqi security forces. power helped iraq reclaim a major dam from "i-sis" control. james foley got his master's degree from northwestern university's medill school in 2008. northwestern released a statement saying, "the medill family is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the murder of james foley." the statement characterizes the attack on foley as "an attack on freedoms necessary in a civilized society and across strained cultures." and it says foley's murder dramatizes what it calls "the risks implicit in shedding light where inhumanity can take hold." overnight protests in ferguson missouri were more peaceful than they have been. there were plenty of protesters chanting against the shooting death of michael brown. that crowd thinned out a bit as it got later. k-9 dogs and pepper spray were used, but no tear gas. officers did chase some people after bottles were thrown at them. police arrested 47-people and seized three guns. brown's funeral is scheduled for next monday.
