news cheered would just got word of a fire on the south side. at this point the fire is sound self vernon. we're told this is a courtyard apartment building. two people have jumped to escape the fire. no word on injuries. we do know there is a large response. the call came in a few minutes after 3:30 a.m.. we're working on that. again, that address is 11238 south of vernon. courtyard apartment building. moving on to some items in terms of traffic. a serious accident with a car slammed into a light pole south bound 83. everything is shut down from northwest highway over to gulf. we do have flashing lights. the good news in this is the volume is light. it looks like the travel times are in good shape we will have a full traffic hit in just a few minutes. a woman is fighting for

her life this morning, after shew was set on fire on the north side. police are holding her husband. tonya francisco is live at the scene with more. >> good morning. the police crime scene tape remains up from six hours after the incident if you can see, the wheelchair that was presumably used by the husband who was arrested in the incident also remains at the scene. here's what we know. behind the salvation army store in the 4300 block of north broadway next to the course restore at the intersection of broadway and montrose. according to the sun-times, the husband and wife in their sixties got into an argument over money and that's when the husband through rubbing alcohol on the woman to set her on fire with a lighter. a witness ran to the woman side putting her down and removing her clothing. eventually shoes

taken to hospital in critical condition. the sun times reports a woman has third degree burns from the top of her head to her waist and burns on the back and front side of her body. also reports during the search of the husband officers found a small bag of marijuana in his prosthetic leg. but husband is now in police custody and police say charges are pending. back to you. >>a car flips over during a car chase, in the city's south side. it happened a few hours ago...around midnight near 35th and cottage grove. police were chasing this car, when it rolled over in a park. four people were pinned inside. all of them were taken to the hospital. three are in critical condition. police have not said why they were chasing the car. president obama will spell out his plans to answer the threat from "isis," in a wednesday night address to the nation. the president insists he won't

send ground troops to syria or iraq. but he told "meet the press," he'll do what he can from the *air, to hunt down "isis" leaders and stop their movement. >> we are not looking at sending in hundreds of thousands of troops. we are going to be part of the international coalition carrying out air strikes in support on the ground by curtis troops. we are going to be putting together a plan for them so that they can retake the territory that had been taken over. >>the president says the air campaign will take months. he says nine other countries have agreed to join the fight against isis in iraq and syria. police in merrillville indiana are mourning the loss of one of their youngest officers. nickolaus schultz died yesterday at christ medical center in oak lawn. the 24-year-old officer had been shot in the head friday night while responding to a call. the man who shot him later committed suicide.

>> if i had caught 100 applicants had to put in applications i would want them to be just like him. he was proactive and when he came to working wanted to make a difference. >>schultz was the first officer to die in the line of duty since the department was founded in 19-71. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. this mother is charged with the murder of her daughter. waukegan police say nicholette lawrence admitted she hit her eleven year old daughter, raasania coley last week. coley was found unresponsive and died on friday. an autopsy revealed her stomach tore from blunt force trauma. lawrence's other two children are with relatives. she is due back in court september 30-th. chicago police are searching for the attackers who beat and robbed a harvey police officer. it happened early yesterday morning along south lake shore drive near 59th street. the officer... identified as derick moore... was taken to northwestern memorial hospital in critical condition with injuries to his face and head.

a stiff 450 thousand dollars bond for a mount prospect woman accused of critical injuring a state trooper, , then trying to leave the scene of an accident. the officer was struck saturday as he stopped a vehicle on i- 294 near saint charles road. police say, when leslie thurow tried to pull away, she forced another car to roll over... and seven *more people were injured. everyone will recover. two people and two dogs had to be rescued on lake michigan after their boat caught fire. this was about a mile and a half from the 24 hundred block of north lake shore drive on sunday afternoon. the boat was heading back to diversey harbor, when a passenger spotted smoke. shortly after everyone was rescued. the boat went up in flames. no injuries were reported. the bears have dug themselves into a hole, just one game into the season. bears hosting the bills on the lakefront. the bears overcame a ten- point deficit, but in the fourth jay cutler throws a bad interception... buffalo scored 13 points off three bears turnover.

falling on the city's south side. this is the apartment fire in a court building along one pulp and south of vernon. we are hearing several people were taken to hospital by ambulance. two people reportedly jumped from the building to get away from the fire. a pretty significant fire in terms of size. it is under control. no update on injuries. that's at 112 and south of vernon. a three

story courtyard apartment building caught fire just after 330 a m. judy wang is heading to the scene she will bring us the latest. >>chick-fil-a founder truett cathy has died. cathy died just after midnight... surrounded by loved ones. his business began near atlanta in 19-67. it grew to become one of the nation's largest restaurant chains. cathy always insisted on keeping his restaurants closed on sundays... in honor of his christian faith. he also wrote a number of best- selling books on business, finance and faith. he was 93. british leaders are offering concessions to the voters of scotland, as a new poll suggests growing support for scottish independence. the sunday times reports, the scottish support breaking away on their own, 51 percent to 49. scotland has been part of the u-k for more than 300 years. and to keep it that way, britain is now offering the scots greater authority over their country's spending and welfare rates if they *reject independence. election day is september 18-th. a 6-year-old boy is recovering

in the hospital after he was attacked by a mountain lion in northern california yesterday. the boy was hiking with his family near this cupertino winery when the mountain lion struck him from behind. investigators said the cat pounced on the child and tried to drag him away. his parents had to fight the lion off. authorities have closed all trails in the area while they search for the animal. the boy is hospitalized with moderate injuries. he's expected to survive. about 100 people had to be rescued from the wildfires in yosemite national park. the fire has spread to 700- acres, since it started on friday. hikers were airlifted from a rock formation called "half dome peak." helicopters also picked up visitors at nearby campgrounds and hiking trails. the park remains open except for trails near the evacuation site. as the 13th anniversary of the september 11th attacks comes this week -- there is comfort for the family of a new york firefighter who died that day. it's a metal bracelet, bearing the name of the fallen firefighter michael otten, who was killed when the twin towers fell. his son jason wore this bracelet -- but lost it nearly a

so good against the buffalo bills could not get it done. right down the field on the opening possession but then coupler written into trouble. second quarter than it was late turning back with the ball intercepted who takes the way back into the bears territory. a penalty as well. first and goal at the seven and the quarterback puts it out there wide-open easy touchdown 17-7. after the bears interception in the third quarter coupler got busy and finished off a drive to marshall. game tied at 17. going into overtime that's when the bears failed to score on their first possession. they shred the defense 40 yds to the one. abusing cris carpenter on the way down. this is a chip shot field goal spoiling the party. this shocked a lot of people.

the fire has been struck but obviously emergency responders and crews are staging in the area. we have a second fire alarm patterson and killed patrick. not far away at addison and cicero they are blocked off. you'll have to be detoured are from there until they can get this fire under control. on top of that, on the road we are dealing with a full stretch of 83 close from northwest highway to golf ball because of a car into a light pole this morning. emergency responders are on the scene. they're not expecting this to open up until 5:00 a.m.. we do have the least this morning as well along the kennedy expressway. as to head toward the tri-state, these lands are being squeezed down about a mile and a half. even though volume is typically light we are seeing backups. looking at the numbers, traffic is moving pretty normally accept

cold like symptoms but gets worse progressively. doctors say it's an extremely rare virus. the number of cases have escalated since school began. more than 1000 children have come down with it. similar incidents reported in illinois. 10 states have contacted the cdc for help investigating clusters of the virus. >> it causes respiratory illness and among that illnesses that are more serious that require hospitalization. especially if the trigger a serious asthma attacks. >> clusters have been seen in the past have been small maybe 25-30 patients. but we were seeing as many as that in one day. >> the good news is the virus is not usually fatal. test results are pending to see if it's a regional outbreak. >>taking a look at the *other

top stories this morning. this mother is charged with the murder of her daughter. waukegan police say nicholette lawrence admitted she hit her eleven year old daughter, raasania coley last week. coley was found unresponsive and died on friday. an autopsy revealed her stomach tore from blunt force trauma. lawrence's other two children are with relatives. she is due back in court september 30-th. jury selection begins today for the trial of a man charged with killing his teenaged ex- girlfriend. prosecutors say erick maya shot 15 year old briana valle, and her mother, in their driveway in romeoville, in february. valle died, but her mother survived. a tribune investigation found that the mother had been trying to keep her daughter away from maya. orland park firefighters are mourning the death of one of their own. firefighter wes peak was killed in a car crash yesterday morning on his way to work. it happened on i-57 and 190th street in matteson. peak lost control of his vehicle and struck a metal pole. the accident is under investigation. the bears got off to a bad start in the season- opener

against buffalo. the offense racked up 427 yards, but jay cutler threw two interceptions and the bills scored 13 points off three turnovers. the bears defense gave up nearly two- hundred rushing yards, and they lose in overtime, 23-20. vacation's over for members of congress. they return back to capitol hill today after their summer recess. their schedule will be packed... with issues ranging from immigration to avoiding another government shutdown. many congressional leaders only have a few weeks on the hill before hitting the campaign trail for their midterm elections in november. all 435 seats in the house and a third of the seats in the senate are up for grabs on november 4th. latino activists are enraged that president obama has decided to postpone any unilateral action to grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants. faced with widespread public *opposition to legalization, the president knows that any action now could cost more democratic senators their seats this fall. so he'll wait until after the election.

chicago congressman luis gutierrez and other activists say obama broke a promise to act without congressional approval to effectively grant permanent residency to as many as 5 million immigrants. governor quinn spent his sunday pushing for a statewide increase in the minimum wage, to at least ten dollars an hour. voters will weigh in on it, in november. at the blue frog bar and grills, we are born to work night and day on behalf of this great cause. it's a cause here in illinois and all across our country. in his state of the union speech the president says it raised the wage parity give america a raise. >> at the blue from bar and grill, quinn was joined by maryland governor martin o'malley, who recently signed legislation raising *his state's minimum wage to 10 dollars, 10 cents an hour. mike ditka is pitching politics in his latest commercial. he's supporting bruce rauner for governor.

comedian drew carey is offering a 10 thousand dollar reward for information on teens who pulled a terrible ice bucket challenge prank. last week a video surfaced online of an ohio teen with autism being doused in human waste and cigarette butts. carey took to social media after the mother of a 14-year- old boy with autism told police she found the video. he tweeted that the kids should be arrested and expelled. jenny mccarthy also tweeted that she would help double carey's efforts. less than a month after racially insensitive comments forced donald sterling to sell the l-a clippers, *another n-b-a owner is losing his team. bruce levenson will sell his controlling interest in the atlanta hawks. levenson has come under fire for an e-mail her sent to the club's co-owners in 2012. in it, he said the fan base at home games was 70 percent black, and whites were being scared away. levenson admits the remarks were inappropriate and insensitive. pittsburgh steelers antonio brown looked more like bruce lee during this punt return. brown looked like he was on his

judy wang is on scene at that fire at 112 let's go up to her now. >> good morning. we are at the corner of 113 and martin luther king drive. this is where the fire department is designating the staging area. we expect any time this morning to get a briefing on what has happened. still try to gather more information to get details on what happened. here's what we do know. this happened at 112 and vernon. a court your building pre building seemed to be affected. three children were killed and an adult killed we have also heard two people jumped from the building to escape the fire. we don't have any information at this point about the three children. we just know they were found in a front bedroom of one of the buildings. two other adults were seen jumping to escape this fire. this fire call came at

3:30 a.m.. it sounds like the firefighters were able to get the fire out about 30 minutes later. we are at 113 and can drive. we are a block and a half from where this building started. it's about a block over and to the east. this is the closest we have been able to get. i didn't walk down there a few minutes ago. there is still a lot of activity. many residents are outside. doesn't sound like all the details are put together yet. some people said they heard there were people killed but they had not learned more than i did. i spoke with a few people who live across the street who said the fire department did not to evacuate them but they left their building on their own. this broke out at about 3:30 a.m.. a courtyard building.
