it was too late to save for children. good afternoon. >> we welcome our viewers watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. judy wang is live in the roseland neighborhood with more on the fire investigation. >> neighbors have been coming by some of them have left stuffed animals outside the front of the building. two boys and two girls were killed in this fire. tenants say they recall hearing their mother screaming for her children before she jumped out of a window to escape the fire. relatives identified them as seven year-old, 12 year-old, 13

year-old and 16 year-old. their mother is coleman. there is a man also hospitalized that is her boyfriend. nothing suspicious so far as they go through the rubble for clues. they found the children in the third floor bedroom two of them in the closet. based on the positions of their bodies firefighters think one of the older kids was trying to shield a younger sibling. >> they were lovely kids. they used to come over every day and play with my kids after school. >> the fire at the courtyard building broke out at about 330. when crews arrived they found a woman the children's mother and a man lying on the ground both for rushed in critical condition to christ medical center. >> first chief the pulled up here approximately three minutes had heavy fire blowing out the second and third floor windows.

he immediately requested more help and ems. he knew he already had people on the ground and there was a chance that during our search he would find more. >> suspected started in a second-floor unit and spread to the stairwell up to the third floor. 30 others to live in the building made it out on their own. they see the smoke was so thick they cannot see and glass was flying everywhere. >> when i ran out of the ceiling get out. the lady next door she opened her door and i said get out of the house. >> seeing two people jump is an image many residents say they will not forget. >> they were in the window yelling get out and all of a sudden you saw them come flying out. the kids never came. i am praying to god that they died from smoke inhalation and did not suffer. >> city records indicate the city has cited the landlord of this building several times in

the past for building code violations. one complaint not enough smoke detectors. firefighters say they did not find a working smoke detector in the unit where they believe it started and did not find a smoke detector in the apartment where the children were found. also the apartment for the children lived in this information comes from the father of the youngest child he says the back door the lock was broken on the back door so instead of fixing the lock management just bolted the door shut so the kids were trapped. they had no where to go. they could not what the front door and cannot escape to the back door. some of the neighbors and family friends planned a vigil outside the building for this evening and that is set to begin at 6:00. >> tonya francisco continues our coverage of this tragic fire. >> as i christ medical center where the injured victims were taken. >> very emotional scene here at

the hospital as dozens of family members had gathered including the father of three of the children to mourn their deaths as well as pay for the mother and her boyfriend were forced to jump from the third floor window. dozens of family members gathered in the parking lot across the street from the emergency room to pray. the father of three of the children who were killed identifying them as 16 year-old clark preferred teeher 13 and 14 year-old sibli. their mother is komen. as news began to spread family members began showing up at the emergency room offering comfort and support to the father. he was too emotional to speak on camera but his brother says his nieces and nephews were great kids and they will be missed. >> she went to phillips high school. she ranked at 3 in her

class. he was in eighth grade. getting ready to graduate. he was on his way to the military. my brother just signed him up to go to military school. he just loved to dance. the other little baby she was just a sweetheart. >> 8 traumatic event for a repair the eli fault. i am just asking the public to pray for our family. my sister has lost four of her children and we just need prayer's. >> her sister tells us her sister will be okay despite the severe injuries she suffered as she jumped from the window. as for her boyfriend no information has been released about his condition or his name. family members tell us they do not want pictures of the children released they would rather their privacy been respected. >> a rare virus attacking

children is spreading throughout the midwest including right here in the chicago area. while it is not fatal health experts say it is more severe and widespread than in years past. andrew spencer has details. >> hospital in kansas city is treating dozens of children every day and every day children's mercy hospital put several of those kids in intensive care. to blame is an uncommon virus. >> it causes respiratory illnesses and among them are illnesses that are more serious there require hospitalization. particularly if they trigger serious asthma attacks. >> small clusters of 25 or 30 patients in the past and we were seeing that many patients in a day. >> along with 500 cases in kansas city missouri hundreds of kids in denver colorado dealing with the same respiratory symptoms. >> full of patients with a

pretty severe respiratory distress. >> the good news is it usually is not fatal. some >> of them have more severe illnesses such as children who have developed asthma and hospitalized but they should all get better. >> in terms of severe illness the cdc says hospitalizations may be the tip of the iceberg. similar symptoms also reported in illinois and ohio. they're waiting on test results to see if it is a regional albright. >> a woman is in critical condition after she was set on fire during an argument with harrison. this happened last night in a parking lot of north broadway. a police report says a 66 year-old man poured rubbing alcohol over his wife's head and left a match. the sixth year old woman is at the hospital with third degree burns. the husband is being held he has not yet been charged. >> the woman is charged with the

murder of her daughter. waukegan police say she admitted she had torn 11 year-old daughter last week. she was found unresponsive and died on friday. an autopsy revealed her stomach tour from blunt force trauma. her other two children are now with relatives and she is due back in court september 30th. >> u.s. war planes have carried out more air strikes against islamic state militants in western iraq. five airstrikes over the weekend drove isis fighters away from the dam. this dam is iraq's second biggest hydroelectric facility and provides millions of people with water. defense secretary said the strikes out on the suny muslim insurgents were carried out at the request of direct shiite muslim-led central government in baghdad. president obama will outline the game plan for dealing with isis when he addresses the nation wednesday one day before the anniversary of the september 11th attacks. in an interview yesterday on

meet the press he said the action will include military diplomatic and economic components but that he would not be announcing u.s. ground troop involvement. he will meet with congressional leaders tomorrow to discuss the administration's strategy and that lawmakers debate the plan. >> his plan to put immigration plan on hold until after midterm elections is causing a backlash. president obama announced over the weekend he will delay executive action so the issue cannot be used by republicans in the november election. control of the senate is on the line and it could help democrats in tight races in arkansas and north carolina and iowa. republicans slammed the president from making what they say is a political calculation and immigration reform advocates say he is putting politics before the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in united states. immigration reform is on the docket as congress heads back to work today after its summer recess terrace however lawmakers are not expected to get anywhere on the issue. also

hundred people rescued after wild fires broke out in yosemite national park. the blaze spread around 700 a. since it started yesterday afternoon. hikers were airlifted. helicopters also picked up visitors at nearby campground and hiking trails. hundreds of firefighters are still trying to put out another fire that started nearby on friday. no injuries or damage to their reported. cause is still under investigation. >> in mountain lion attacked a six year-old boy in northern california. he was hiking with his family when the non mayan struck him from behind. it counts on the child and tried to drag him away. the parents thought the line and off. authorities have closed all

>> a trip to the museum of science and industry was one of the many activities planned during the special camp. art therapy was a favorite. and one other thing. >> swimming and a swimming. going on the boat and seeing the fireworks. >> he was not always a crusader against cancer. with a background in business and ministration he lived and worked around the world for various companies but then his life changed. 12 years ago he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. >> it was a scary time. >> be the deadly disease and left the hospital with a mission. >> made a hospital to see my i would give back to kids one day with cancer. i had no idea how i would do it. it all started with going to idaho and volunteering. >> after volunteering at camp

we're getting a preview of one of the recipes she will be preparing on board the celebrity cruise infinity sailing through europe for top chefs at sea. it will stop in france spain and portugal and england. some wonderful destinations. >> i am really excited. i usually go to italy but this time i get to see the other coastal european countries. really excited. >> or you going to try to do more seafood inspired recipes? guest >> and i am also redoing some of my flops from the show. just kidding. this recipe was in the finale when we had to crush all the big blocks of ice open on the mountain because that is what people do. we cook frozen things on a frozen mountain. not easy. but luckily i have been able to tweak it and have some fun with it.

>> no. it is kind of like rosemary needs time. you can get it at your grocery store. also some basil. when we were on top chef we had to put in a cool ingredients or to get the judge's attention. i had found a chile's and the ice block and omens. and to correct. tugrik is a spice usually done in indian cooking i rehydrated the peppers and all men and 2 rick end cooked it all down and put it in my food processor. now it is like a paste. if you put that in their the soup will be brown. a lot of shops now we're having fun with plating. you could do this at home. because it is a cold soup and you want to show off your main ingredient crab i like to build to the soup in the
