his way here is going to be ok. police have no suspects in custody. police say the 16 year- old boy was in the 1300's block of north cleveland avenue at about 9 thursday night. somebody on a bicycle storage shooting hitting the boy. it happened near the evergreen terrace complex. a spokesperson said the boy was shot in the chest. paramedics took him to northwestern memorial hospital where he died. an officer was headed to the scene and accidentally shot himself. police said the officer was getting out of his vehicle near cambridge and his service revolvers discharge. the officer was shot in the foot and taken to northwestern hospital in could condition. investigators have made no arrests for the shooting. no description of the gunmen. a police spokesman says it is possible there may have been to shooters on board. >>police are warning parents in

the west lawn neighborhood about a man who grabbed two children at a playground. that happened near 64-th and tripp, at r-h lee elementary yesterday morning. the man pulled the boy off some playground equipment. when someone confronted him, he grabbed a girl and hugged her. he managed to get away. police say he had been seen at that playground several times. the vote is in. scotland will remain a part of the united kingdom. the long campaign for independence fell short, as nearly 90 percent of scotland's registered voters went to the polls. in the end, it wasn't even close... 55 percent rejected the proposed breakaway. england's promise to grant scotland new autonomy *without independence, was apparently enough to sway the undecided voters. >> 86% this is one of the highest in the democratic world for any election of any referendum in history. this has been a triumph shared

commitments to change now to have to start putting them into action. >>british prime minister david cameron says the u-k will keep its promise to decentralize its power in scotland. those 16 hoffman estates firefighters that were stranded in cabo san lucas... are heading home this morning. they landed back in the u-s last night... some landed in phoenix, some in l-a. they went to cabo for a friend's destination wedding... that took a turn for the worse when hurricane odile moved in. the storm's 115-mile-per-hour winds cut electricity and grounded flights. looters took advantage of the situation... breaking into businesses and robbing tourists who were trying to leave. >> finally we were able to get on one bus and get out there. with separate chances and we got out there. that's the picture we showed you earlier with the lines waiting for the four-five hours. 95 degree weather.

limited water. people were really passing out. >> it has been like hell. people were crazy. you don't treat people like animals. >>there were an estimated 30- thousand tourists stranded from that storm. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. 2 illinois women have died from the west nile virus. they're the state's first west nile deaths this year. one woman was in her 70s... the other was in her 80s. another 2 chicago residents with the virus have recovered. statewide... health officials have reported 15 human cases of west nile this year. police in carbondale have arrested six southern illinois university students, in connection with sexual assaults against two young women. both victims were 18... one was a student... she was allegedly assaulted by four men. the other victim was not a student. she was attacked by two men at a campus apartment building.

a grand jury has indicted chicago police commander glen evans for aggravated battery. he is accused of shoving his gun barrel down a man's throat, putting a taser to the man's groin, and threatening to kill him. evans was placed on desk duty last month. he'll be arraigned later this month. his attorney wants a swift trial, and says evans will be cleared of all charges. lawyers for three men are suing the joliet diocese, claiming the men were sexually abused as boys, more than 30 years ago. the plaintiffs claim that reverend leonardo mateo, of immaculate conception parish in elmhurst, molested them in the school locker room and swimming pool. they say that, at the time, church investigators simply told them to *resist mateo's advances. mateo never faced criminal charges. he died ten years ago. the diocese says the allegations against mateo are credible. a teacher charged with sexually assaulting a student in the northwest suburbs was arrested

overseas in bosnia. michael vucic was taken into custody on sunday. they are working to extradite him back to the u-s. vucic is accused of sexually assaulting a student at gavin south middle school in ingleside in 2012. authorities have identified a possible second victim, and say there may be more. vucic was initially believed to have fled to germany. chicago bear brandon marshall spent 40-minutes talking about his past with domestic violence and his problems... with e-s-p- n and attorney gloria allred. marshall had been suspended earlier in his career for domestic violence. the n-f-l suspended him, and he was eventually acquitted of those charges. but all that resurfaced, when attorney gloria allred brought the alleged victim's father and friend to talk about the case. allred says she wanted to show how the n-f-l neglects to talk to victims. but marshall says there are better ways to do that. >> i would love for her to use

that influence to really help the people who are out there struggling. not using that as an opportunity to brand herself to create a circus. >>marshall also criticized a recent e-s-p-n piece, saying they misled him about their intentions. he also said the network used interviews from two years ago and portrayed them as more recent. more details are coming out about the case against the arizona cardinals' jonathan dwyer. dwyer spent wednesday night in jail for assault, before he posted bail yesterday. police say he head butted his wife and broke her nose after she refused his sexual advances back in july. they also say he threw a shoe at his 18-month old son and punched his wife in the face. police say dwyer admitted to the argument, but not to the assault. dwyer remains de-activated from the cardinals. coming up ... the f-b-i offers a reward for the cop-killer on the run in pennsylvania. and -- a huge catch sets a

spoken openly about mass murder, and who has made no secret of his hatred for the police. the search for a shooting suspect shuts down part of phoenix sky harbor international airport. police say three shooting suspects entered the busy airport trying to evade officers. police shut down terminal four, searching for a man believed to be involved in a shooting at a gas station in tempe, arizona. police had already arrested two other suspects -- a man and a woman. only flights that were already boarding when the search started were allowed to leave. incoming flights were allowed to land, but passengers weren't allowed to get off the planes. four days into mississippi's alligator-hunting season, and the state's record for heaviest reptile caught was broken ... twice. this 792-pounder is now the record to beat. it was captured two days after one that weighed 756-pounds. the alligator was 13-feet, 5- inches ... and 70 inches around the belly.

injured while responding to the scene. judy wang is live in the old town neighborhood with more. >> it is quiet now with investigators wrapped up their work at the shooting scene. the injured officer will be ok. no identity yet on. the shooting happened at about 9:00 last night in the 1300 block of north cleveland avenue. the teenager was a the evergreen terrace apartment complex. someone on a bicycle started shooting. a department spokesman said the victim was hit in the chest. paramedics took him to hospital where he passed away. the police officer was headed to the cleveland avenue location. police say he was near cambridge and as he was getting out of his car, the gun discharged and he was shot in the foot. he was in good condition when treated at the hospital. no suspects in

>> british prime minister david cameron says the u-k will keep its promise to decentralize its power in scotland. a british hostage is featured on the latest propaganda video from "isis" terrorists. john cantlie was abducted along with american journalist james foley in late 2012. foley was later beheaded. in the new video, cantlie is clear that he is speaking the words of "isis" under duress. he goes on to criticize america and england for refusing to negotiate with terrorist kidnappers. and he claimed that western media manipulate their coverage of "isis." the senate has given final approval to a bill that provides funding to train and arm syrian rebels in their fight against an "isis" takeover. the vote was 78-to-22. critics say the rebels have already expressed their support for *al-qaeda ... and they add that it's hard to determine who the "good guys" are, in syria. senator john mc-cain says it feels as if america is getting itself into another vietnam. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning.

his past and domestic violence in the nfl. during a 40 minute press conference he criticized the attorney for bringing up accusations that already had their day in court. also saying espn owes him an apology for a recent piece on domestic violence he says left out key facts and used old interviews. a florida man shot and killed his daughter and six grandchildren and later killed themselves. he was identified as 51 year-old donna spirit. the city called 911 after a shooting and then killed himself. his grandchildren range in age from 3 months-11 years old. spirit had spent time in prison after accidentally killing his son in a hunting accident. he was released in 2006. the learning corner is one of three locations in colorado being considered for the new

retail site. the glenwood village board says if the marijuana company can get a license, the village will sell the building and the learning center i should say, the learning corner for $160,000. 41 children and teachers would have to be relocated. >> to be here for three years and now to be faced with the fact that we may not be here, i'm not happy about that. >> we will work with the owners. the proceeds from the sale will be used to relocate. >> the same investment group wants to grow marijuana on a site south of the golf course. the state is reviewing the application. a new selective enrollment has school will not be named after the president after all. the mayor backing off the plan after critics say the honor was inappropriate for a school being built in a wealthy and predominantly white area. even the president's connection to the south side. the community

will now help named the new school. plans to quit her teachers union job, if she runs for mayor. she does not plan to quit that job. lewis has not announced whether she is running yet. but one democratic group says she shouldn't be the chicago teachers union president and a candidate at the same time. "democrats for education reform" says that would be a conflict of interests during negotiations for a new teachers contract. lewis says she can do both jobs since the union is more than just her. but she says she would give up being president, if that's what the union wanted her to do. the "tonight show" is returning to chicago for the first time in more than a decade, and mayor emanuel is to thank. emanuel challenged kids in chicago to read 2-point-four million books over the summer. the kids not only reached the goal, they surpassed it. the mayor made the same bet the year before, and when he lost he took the polar plunge with jimmy fallon. emanuel asked fallon to tape the "tonight show" in chicago if this year's goal was met.

last night, fallon agreed to it. he also asked emanuel if there was room at his house, and the mayor tweeted that fallon could stay with him. the mayor treated that he could indeed stay with him. that would be fun. a new poll shows most americans don't know much about the government. only 36-percent could successfully name all three branches of government as being the legislative, executive and judicial branches. 35-percent could not even name even one branch. only 38 percent knew the republican party controls the u-s house. the same number knew democrats run the senate. and, only 27 percent knew it takes a two-thirds majority of the house and senate to override a presidential veto. it gets so confusing. i don't blame them. it can be confusing. >> let's take a look. if passed

president in 2016. he says he's focused on fundraising for his party. new jersey governor chris christie said a new television report on the george washington bridge scandal vindicates him. trending now: it's all in the belly the centers for disease control and prevention is out with a new study suggesting the average waist size in america is expanding. "abdominal obesity" is defined by waist size... at least 35 inches for women, 40 for the guys. a new study suggests abdominal obesity is on the rise along with our waist measurements.. the new c-d-c study was published in the journal of the american medical association. researchers combined data from more than 32-thousand americans ages 19 and up. results show an increase of 54- percent in abdominal obesity from 2011 through 2012. during that time the average waist size in americans grew from 37.6 inches to 38.8. the increase was higher in women. here are a few stories that are trending online this morning ... broncos quarterback peyton manning is making good money in the pizza business. he owns more than 20 papa john's franchises. when asked why more people in colorado are ordering pizza.. manning says its because the

"parks and rec" actress aubrey plaza will provide the voice for an upcoming made for t-v movie featuring "grumpy cat". jane lynch was originally set to play the part, but suddenly turned it down. the movie centers around a young girl who befriends the cat after learning that she's the only person who can hear it speak.
