a few flights now operating after a fire shut down the air traffic control system. >> we welcome our viewers watching us a run the country. >> to joining us now for our top story. has been working this story all morning. have been talking to sources and do have some major information. >> this is an faa employee or an air traffic controller that works out of the oral facility. apparentlaurora facility. is
12:01 pm
getting transferred to hawaii. that is what keeps the whole system together. he went down there and started rapping those lines in rags and dousing them with gasoline. he was also cutting those lines. he was trying to dismantle the entire operation for least several hours. he said those on fire. he caught himself on fire. he had some burns. not sure what the extent is. we reported that he deliberately cut himself and try to kill himself. my sources were telling me that was not the case. he was just while cutting bill is alliance he cut himself in the process. he is in the hospital right now i am sure he is
12:02 pm
being interviewed. that is all i know about him. i do have a name of somebody that we are trying to confirm if it is him or not. if it is it seems like he was more than just disgruntled with the airline. he was also just disgruntled with the americans with the government. not in a terrorist sort of way. a very unhappy person. he knew what he was doing was going to cause all of these problems. he felt the need to do it anyway to make a statement. we're trying to get some more information. >> your still trying to sort out whether this person as a contract worker. we do know he was authorized to be in that space and exactly what he was doing. >> from what i
12:03 pm
understand. he was an air traffic controller. i do not know if the contract some of those are if they are all employees. i am not sure. that information that we were hearing may not exactly be accurate. not quite clear at this time >> there is no official confirmation on this. this is with a highly placed source is telling >> someone who is in the know and confirmed all of this information for me. it is top-notch information. i have been working the phones all morning. my phone has been ringing off of the hook. it is definitely somebody that absolutely feel is credible and would put that person's information on the air. if it were not i obviously would not do it. >> has a person told
12:04 pm
you whether this worker was on their radar? have this person been disciplineas this person been disciplined? >> if the person that i'm being told who did this, this is from a different source. he does have some psychological issues. there was something written that i have been proveprivy to. we have not confirmed if it is him or not. there are some psychological issues. definitely some issues with americans with the government. things like that. kind of a rambling sort of letter that i read. hopefully we can get some more information on the 40. i'm still working it.for you. i'm still

working on that. >> a major development. pinkie. thank you >> more on just how this stoppage began and the crime scene. >> we have just gotten word that the news conference by federal and local officials of regionally planned for 11:00 this morning is now postponed until 2:00 p.m. central standard time. when that happens we will bring it to you. this facility teeming with investigators. it is a crime scene that could be out of commission for quite some time. that means a lingering slowdown on air- traffic. according to police a contractor with extensive access deliberately set fire to a basement transmission area at

around 5:40 a.m.. he used gasoline and read this to set this fire after bonding wires and cables. suffered burns and cuts. tried to deliberately cut those wires. remains hospitalized. all employees were instructed to leave. after a safe evacuation. one employee did suffer smoke inhalation. police are stressing this incident is not an act of international terrorism. >> there was no explosion. >> we are being cautious. that is why you're seeing a lot of equipment coming in. there appears to be a fire that was set by contract employee. >> because of the
12:07 pm
fire and water damage to the control panels here. this facility could be out for the foreseeable future. duties will have to be shifted to other facilities and the lingering slowdown of traffic. >> we are expecting in this conference from federal and local officials at cpm. >> that is the latest2:00 p.m. >> it is being felt. clive l. harris with more on building frustration. i can only imagine. >> we have heard
12:08 pm
lots of stories here. at least 700 flights canceled at all here. another 150 flights canceled lead midway. the land to reach the counter extended all the way to where we were standing. a lot of these travelers were waiting at least one hour. confusion frustration. travelers uttering words that can not exactly use on television. as the morning progressed the cloudcrowds got bigger and bigger. they say they received no notification of a problem. there were shocked when they looked at the departures monetary and saw that almost every flight was canceled. some people went straight to security on a lawyer. also spoke with some travelers who did get some e- mail alert.
12:09 pm
>> i have talked to others who are missing reunions. a lot of people missing weddings because they cannot get out of town until tomorrow. >> we got the warning as we were getting here. i'm here trying to see if i can get in flight. >> you not look happy. i'm not happy at all. >> i have positive thoughts. i'm going to have faith and think i'm going to get there. >> still not get me
12:10 pm
there in time. lsi sprout wings and i do not think that is going to happen. travelers trying to have a sense of humor about what has been going on. i spoke with a woman who was heartbroken. her son is graduating from the air force special forces and she is really worried she is going to miss the graduation ceremony. >> the faa started resuming flights at a very slow rate. i just took a peek at the departures. it says most of the flight still canceled. >> dennis on the phone is an aviation expert. good to have you back. i was thinking about what a critical link the center is to the nation's air transportation system. thinking this transportation system is more fragile than i might have realized.
12:11 pm
sometimes something like this can happen. so that we realize just how vulnerable we really are. access to critical components. it is amazing. >> i get the people are frustrated that their flights to not take off. >> what else could he have done with the access that he had? >> he was a strange person. the person that is knowledgeable and bent on really doing some severe damage to the aviation system. >> create havoc. i cannot think of the

center any place in the united states that has the kind of impact that the aurora center does. this is critical to everything that happens in the air. >> explain the situation in the air with the center and being the center of the country. >> when you go to work in the morning there is a one intersection that has a traffic policeman there and he is directing traffic and traffic moves. maybe does not move like you would like it too. making sure everybody is safe and separated properly. one morning call to work and he is not there. completely different situation trying to get through the traffic. that is kind of an analogy for what we're dealing with here. we're going back in time. would have to go back decades to a time when a system that they're having to use now in the rules they're having to follow would be the rules applicable
12:13 pm
30 years ago. a lot of people going to be inconvenienced for quite some time. not going to get completely out of the woods. >> as a senior airline captain and a longtime industry observer what kind of questions to you have about what happened today? >> how is access controlled for sensitive areas of aurora. >> this is going to be a lesson that is going to be learned for all of the centers across the country. this one was really radical and exciting. >> when you have these airplanes
12:14 pm
flying around out there. everything of a sudden your controof a sudden your control shut down. >> is a form of emergency. we're dealing with something here rare lot of changes are going to be made very quickly. this disgruntled employee or anyone else that wants to do damage to the system is going to have a much more difficult time trying to pull it off. >> does this leave you wondering what a real terrorist could have done? >> and opens up an array of things that could have happened. >> our systems are very fragile. almost all of them are. particularly if you want to expose critical components.
12:15 pm
definite knowledge about how it works and knows where to do the most damage. what is security like? >> almost no place in the facility that i couldn't visit. >> it from one critical area to another. we have exposure here now. we'll have to take care of it. we'll have to do it right away. this doesn't mean we are in a fragile situation. >> thank you so much for your insight.

12:19 pm
the regional radar center. the fire was set in the basement but a contract employee. >> air traffic has been so affected they have canceled flights until 7:00 p.m.. a press conference is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.. >> i want to ask you why this facility such a key element. it really is a national facility that traffic is handed off from a more local towers. when you entered the national system they manage flight's going to chicago but well over chicago. the scary part about today's thing is from a financial standpoint for the airlines and disrupted the whole national air system. a little reminiscent of 10 years ago when our airport often had such bad delay is a cripple the national system. now it is our air traffic control system it appears.
12:20 pm
>> i think my criticism is less that we had an outage when there is a deliberate terrorism act. you're going to have an outage. safety requires you to ground things. this drug on 44-5 hours. that is what i find to be not acceptable. the public was kept in the dark. even now it appears there is some limited operation orders. milwaukee has southwest flights grounded as well. this really is a big deal. flights cannot divert to other airports. flights cannot even take off. outbound flights do not need as much as a traffic support. this is even a much bigger deal. >> terrorism and authorities in this
12:21 pm
case are very quick to just throw out of it being an act of terrorism. what are your thoughts on that? >> i'm no expert on the definition of terrorism. it appears to be arson. we do not know. it apparently was done with the goal of inflicting harm on people. >> q. was an exact spot appears again would do maximum damage to the tourist traffic systeair-traffic system. a contractor who had the insight on how to get something like this done. and the fact that this is twice in a year. friday is a tough day. if it was later in the day we would have the night to recover. all the airplanes in flight crews are in the wrong spot. the ripple effects are afraiof going to stretch
12:22 pm
for quite some time. >> the big thing is that we really fell last timfelt last time that operations could be shifted back and forth between belgian and laurelgin and auror this we would have thought at least a good portion of the flights could be handled by eldeelgin. we know how computer systems are changing with a talk to each other and there is a lot of redundancy. that apparently is not the case. a five hour delay that is really rare stuff. >> we do have redundant systems but they are not good enough. the faa is making it clear that they're going to move to a lot of new technology.
12:23 pm
>> they deserve all lot of credit for warning the public that the system as old and needs to be fixed. they need the funding to get it done. i think we're seeing and is not just computer problems. there's a human element to how quick the police respond. >> >> has been stuck for hours. many will not be getting out anytime soon. live at that airport with the latest on the situation.
12:24 pm
>> west announced that there proactively canceling all flights both here and in milwaukee. >> through at least 7:00 p.m. tonight. take a look at what is going on inside. airline officials say they are working. southwest prides itself on from a customer service. that may be why many telos most folks are acting quite cooperative way. certainly there's a lot of frustration. >> others found that they can make it to their destination by rail. of course southwest will resume service. >> self-inflicted wounds found by crews responding and 5:40 a.m.. has had enormous impact on thousands of flyers.
