hundred block of west van buren. neighbors describe what they heard and saw. the boss thought it was a truck. and then it went boom. >> not just old building. >> from the first floor and second floor and third floor, everything flooded one time. purchase full blast. >>authorities were not able to search the building due to hazardous conditions. it's still unknown if anyone was inside. a search will begin this morning. a breaking story we'll be following all day: teachers in waukegan's public schools are hitting the picket line. the district and union couldn't come to an agreement over contract issues last night, so the teachers are beginning a strike this morning. the two sides are debating salaries, health benefits, and working conditions. the waukegan park district will offer child care for 30 dollars a day. the school district serves about 17,000 students. president obama is in chicago, for some political fundraising, and a speech about the economy tonya francisco is live near

the president's house in kenwood, with a preview of the president's day. did you wake him up and knock on his story yet? >> i don't think i'm going to try that. there's quite a bit of security. i think i will stay right here. but as usual, the president will be packing in quite a bit during his short stay in chicago. the first up is a fund-raiser for gov. pat quinn who is locked in a tight race for governor for reelection. that fundraiser will take place at the home of the daughter of neil wolf, a prominent chicago businessman. from that fund raiser he will head to northwestern university. you'll talk about the economy. president landed at the chicago area 7:15 p.m. landing at the

gary international airport rather than o'hare. o'hare as we are all aware is still trying to get back on track. president was greeted by the indiana senator. from there he helicoptered to soldier field where he headed downtown. among those attending the dinner recess a senior adviser and the chair of the obama foundation who is currently seeking bids for the obama presidential library and museum. also spotted some members of the mayor's security detail outside the restaurant. not clear if the mayor was there for a security detail was on loan to the president. posing for pictures of the restaurant patrons, then he headed home to rest up for today's event. we know the fund-raiser is a private event, the event at

northwestern university is a ticket event. students and other faculty from northwestern will have to have tickets to attend. we do know the senator dick durbin will be there. we will be keeping our eye on all of that and as usual the president had a very busy schedule for the short period of time that he will be here. >>a series of embarrassing and troubling security breaches forced the director of the secret service to step down. julia pierson's resignation came, just a day after she testified before a congressional committee about a man who jumped the white house fence, and got more than 60 feet inside the white house itself two weeks ago. her appearance was followed by the disclosure that the president recently rode in an elevator at the c-d-c with an armed convicted felon. >> the director offered recommendation for her resignation today because she believes it was in the best interest of the agency to which she has dedicated her career. the secretary agreed with that

assessment. the president did as well. >>joseph clancy -- the man on the far right --will replace pierson on an interim basis. clancy is a former special agent in charge of the presidential protective division of the secret service. the white house fence jumper made his first court appearance yesterday. omar gonzalez pled not guilty to all charges against him. he's accused of rushing into the white house with a knife... making it all the way to the east room before he was arrested. the court ordered a mental competency screening for him. gonzalez is due back in court later this month. here is the latest in the ebola scare in texas: health officials are monitoring up to 18 people who had contact with the man infected with ebola there. that includes five children. thomas duncan is hospitalized in isolation. he flew in from liberia on september 20-th without any ebola symptoms. a few days later he went to the hospital for abdominal pain, but he wasn't screened for ebola. he was hospitalized two days later. but during his stay, he's had contact with several people including his girlfriend's five children who have been pulled

out of school. officials are now reviewing why duncan wasn't hospitalized sooner. >> this was just a simple faulty of human nature. a mistake. it dropped the ball. don't want to pile on them but hopefully you will never happen again. >>ebola has an incubation period of up to 21 days. that means it could be weeks before we know if duncan infected anyone else. the virus can only be spread through bodily fluids, when there are symptoms. an employee at a waste water plant in elgin... is accused of bringing a gun to work and possibly holding a hostage. officials say the suspect was an employee at the fox river water reclamation district for 25 years. colleagues claim he came into work an hour late yesterday, before expressing frustrations in the administrative building across the street. police then responded to reports that a man had a gun and was threatening to shut down the plant -- and of a possible hostage situation. officers confronted the man,

and had to use hard rubber pellets to end the confrontation. no charges are pending. a chicago man is dead after a shooting incident at a des plain gun range. police arrived at the maxon indoor shooting range at about 1:40 yesterday afternoon. they found 22 year old pawel siniakowicz on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. he was pronounced dead shortly after. police are investigating, but say it doesn't appear to be from foul play. an autopsy is scheduled for today. no arrests yet... in the shooting that killed one 17- year-old and critically wounded another in skokie sunday. maxwell gadau was shot to death at about 9:40 sunday night. police found him in a vehicle with a 17-year-old girl. she was also shot. both students were seniors at niles north high school. police have released very little information on the shooting. but they say it was not a random act of violence. former chicago police commander jon burge is being released from prison today. burge was convicted of perjury, for lying about torturing suspects under his command. he was sentenced to under five

years in prison. he will spend up to four months at a halfway house near his home in florida. now there's a movement for the city to pay 20-million dollars in reparations. victims also want a formal apology, a special medical and psychological center on the south side, and free city college educations. >> some were innocent, some were not. but there were tortured and have received nothing for it. >>some of burge's victims have received compensation, but others have not. an attempt to take away burge's pension failed in court. his attorney says burge maintains his innocence. a very lucky coyote is expected to survive after being hit by a car and getting stuck in its grill. the coyote.. named "vern" was hit on september 24. a man was driving to work at the waukegan train station when he heard a thump on his car. when he parked the car someone told him a small animal was stuck in the grill. he called animal control and they got him out. vern was pretty docile. he's got 3 broken legs but is expected to recover and be released back into the wild.

died from enterovirus 68. it's the first publicly- announced death related to the virus since an outbreak started this summer. the centers for disease control says the 10-year-old girl died from a rare combinatn of bacterial and viral infections. enterovirus is not dangerous for most healthy adults but can be severe in children. it starts with cold-like symptoms but can deteriorate into breathing problems and other complications.

the grand jury in the michael the black brown shooting in ferguson is being investigated, because of what someone said on twitter. a woman tweeted this out yesterday morning. it reads, 'i know someone sitting on the grand jury of this case. there isnt enough at this point to warrant an arrest." prosecutors are now looking to see if any jurors have been discussing the case. the grand jury is trying to determine if police officer darren wilson committed a crime when he shot and killed michael brown in august. wilson had said brown went for his gun, but witnesses say brown was surrendering when he was shot. we're learning more about the stopped for speeding with a alcohol limit nearly doubled. his eyes were red and bloodshot. he's failed to roadside sobriety tests and declined the third when he was arrested. he was going nearly 40 mi. over the speed but after meeting in

getting ready for carolina on sunday. alan back after missing the packers game with pneumonia. dropped 15 lbs. and back on the practice field another who has lost two games with a concussion and injured offensive linemen who had missed three games. ellen, sitting out against the packers was a nightmare. >> it was brittle and miserable. i've played through a lot of things but there's just some things you can't play through. it was a battle whether i could give it a go. i give it a day. you don't want to come back and end up in the hospital. after talking with doctors and a wife and everybody getting on the same plan, really thought it was best and it was. i would not have been worth anything out there. >> the bull's hard work on the practice court. they're in a sparkling new facility. but for a rookie he had butterflies even

northwestern university redelivers a speech on the economy. several democratic politicians will be in attendance. the governor as well as u.s. senator dick durbin. it's a big day for democrats here in the city. live from the president can would neighborhood. back to you. >>taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. julia pierson is out, as director of the secret service. her resignation came, just a day after she testified before a congressional committee about a man who jumped the white house fence, and got more than 60 feet inside the white house itself two weeks ago. up to 18-people are being monitored after they were exposed to the man infected with ebola. thomas duncan is now hospitalized in isolation. but he had been in texas for a few days. duncan showed symptoms for some of that time. five of the people being monitored are his girlfriend's children. former chicago police commandere jon burge is getting out of prison today.

he was convicted of perjury, for lying about the torture of suspects. burge is expected to spend the next several months at a halfway house near his home in florida. there's now a movement for the city to pay his victims 20- million dollars in reparations. bribery allegations against state senator donne trotter are being dropped. the defense at a lobbying trial had said that trotter accepted two-thousand dollars, but he didn't declare it as a political contribution or income. the defense now says they've lost faith in those allegations, so they won't ask trotr about them at the trial. the turkish parliament is expected to vote today to send soldiers into iraq and syria to fight "isis." american airstrikes yesterday tried to stop the advance of "isis" forces on the syrian town of kobani, near the turkish border. *british warplanes have finally started flying bombing runs against "isis" in *iraq. pro-democracy protesters in hong kong are giving an ultimatum. they are threatening to occupy key government buildings, unless the city's chief executive resigns by tonight.

tens of thousands of demonstrators have been camped out all week. they're pressing for freeer elections. china has warned of chaos... if the protests continue. thunderstorms, expected to arrive in chicago today, may delay the recovery of the air traffic system from last week's fire at the aurora control center. now, mayor emanuel is questioning why the f-a-a has no *backup plan for o'hare and midway airports when the aurora center goes down. another 190 flights at o'hare had to be cancelled yesterday... there were only a few cancellations at midway. emanuel wants answers. >> they have to analyze what happened, how did it happen and how can you have an airport that is so integral in the national system with no backup and one individual can have this impact? full operation at the aurora control center by october 13-th. f-a-a contract worker brian howard of naperville is charged with setting last week's fire. the city of chicago is passing

out refunds -- but not many -- after drivers complained about a suspicious spike in red light camera traffic tickets. thousands of drivers say they were unfairly targeted, and they demanded the reimbursement of the tickets they've already paid. but a tribune investigation reveals, the city has approved only 126 refunds. and still, no one at city hall has explained mysterious *surges in the number of tickets issued by certain red light cameras. a number of super hero t- shirts.... are being considered super sexist. a shirt sold at walmart that reads "training to be batman's wife" bothered some -- who say settling to marry someone awesome instead of *being awesome* is insulting to women... similarly, at a target store in canada, a shopper was insulted after seeing a pair of onesies that read "i only date heroes" and "'future man of steel." d-c comics released a statement agreeing the tees are offensive... but added the company is committed to empowering everyone through it's characters and stories.
