>> good morning. the captain is in serious condition after being shot in the shoulder. he also has a grace pruned on his head. but the veteran of close to 30 years is expected to survive. he and other officers were trying to arrest a man in connection with a shooting of a least three people last weekend in indianapolis. the suspect has been identified and is now in custody, daniel brown. he had been traced to his sister's apartment through a semi tractor trailer he allegedly has stolen. a fugitive task force member knocked on the door in the 7200 block around 5:30 p.m.. the gunman started to shoot out the window. officers pulled the capt. into the vestibule to escape but by doing that they're trapped inside. teams taken out of the back door and here to the

hospital with the mayor visited. hours later the gunman remained barricaded inside the comment the. they used a bullhorn to urge that shooter to give himself up. six hours later a 42 year-old man was killed. brown was taken into custody. the captain, the highest ranking officer shot in the line of duty in years. >> he has two bullet wounds, i don't know if it's one or two. apparently one hit him here and then something botched in his cheek and in his back. it could be two bullets, could be one into fragments. >> he was also injured on the job in 1998. an allegedly drunk driver crashed into his car car and he had to be extricated. he had a broken ankle. live from the hospital. back to you. >>

another developing story overnight: someone tried to outrun a police car... and crashed. it happened just before 2-am. police were chasing this car southbound on central park avenue, when the driver lost control and crashed it into a concrete barrier at 32-nd street. one person was killed... another is in serious condition at stroger hospital. it's not known *why the police were chasing the car. police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a teenage girl on her way home from a homecoming event. the teen was walking alone near proviso east high school just before midnight last friday. she was on madison street near first avenue when the suspect grabbed her and attacked her in the nearby thatcher woods forest preserve. the white house admits, "isis" is winning. american authorities say airstrikes on "isis" targets are not stopping the terrorist fighters from advancing on the northern syria border city of kobani.

they expect the city to fall, any day now, because kurdish fighters don't yet have the firepower and training to stop the "isis" assault. now, the white house is trying to play down the importance of losing kobani. but the u.n. says, it's going to have a huge impact. expecting kurdish fighters to be overwhelmed and expecting a key syrian border city to fall, i cannot sustain another city to fold. >> everyone has said that this is going to be a long and sustained effort. no one thought this could turn around er >> only in large ground force will stop them. the obama administration an isis takeover of kobani would not be a major concern for the united states. ...but a top u-n official says the world would deeply regret it. security plans for sunday's chicago marathon will include medical teams looking out for ebola type symptoms.

runners from 152 countries will be flying in to be in the marathon. none of them are from west africa, which has been plagued medical teams will be in place,. just as they would be for influenza and other viruses. they say any runners with symptoms should get medical attention. the ebola outbreak is now being treated like a national security priority. the president is calling for additional passenger screening at airports, but he's against banning travelers from west africa. four-thousand u-s troops are being deployed to west africa to help fight against the disease. the pentagon says most of them won't be exposed to the virus, but those in testing labs could have contact with it. there have been over 74-hundred cases of ebola in west afr more than 34-hundred people have died. the key suspect in the murder of a skokie teenager is out of jail. a 17-year-old student from chicago was arrested monday, in connection with last week's shooting of maxwell gadau. but yesterday, investigators said they have yet t collect enough evidence to charge him. so they let him out. 4 other teens are charged in gadau murder. police say, he was in a car with a female friend who was selling marijuana when the shooting happened. the girl was also shot... she remains hospitalized.

a man and a woman are suing the hammond police department for using excessive force during a traffic stop. their main piece of evidence is this cell phone video. lisa mahone was pulled over in hammond, on september 24-th, for not wearing a seatbelt. officers asked her passenger, jones said he didn't have i-ion. d...instead a traffic ticket. police say jones refused officers' orders to get out of the car. they say officers busted the window and used a stun gun because jones was reaching behind him for a possible weapon. >> a 14 year-old is the one who took the hardest because not every time a police car passes our car and you can tell. she is just not right. and the teacher says she is not paying attention in school. it all started from that point.

>>mahone's 14 year old daughter recorded this video. hammond police say they have their own video of the incident, but they have not released it. no weapon was found in the car. jones was issued citations for resisting arrest. chicago teachers union president karen lewis remains in the hospital for an undisclosed ailment. the union says lewis went to a doctor because she wasn't feeling well sunday evening. but there have been no updates the union is only saying that she's doing better, and they're waiting for more information from doctors. on monday it said she did not suffer a stroke. lewis has been considering running for mayor and contributed 40-thousand dollars to her political fund. contract talks with striking teachers in waukegan broke down last night and negotiators haven't set a time to get back to the bargaining table. 12-hundred teachers hit the picket lines last thursday, keeping about 17-thousand students at home. the teachers want a pay increase totalling 23-percent over three years. district 60 administrators say they can't afford that.

repairs to the fire-damaged aurora air traffic control center are on schedule... and the center should reopen next monday. the center has been offline since september 26-th, when police say a contract worker set fire to the basement and tried to kill himself. brian howard told police he was angry that he was being transferred to hawaii. replacement equipment is being tested this week... and the transfer of traffic control operations will start sunday night. even the famous eiffel tower has to be updated to stay at the top of the tourism industry. the paris landmark unveiled a new glass floor this week, similar to chicago's willis tower. visitors can now look straight down about 200 feet to the plaza below. it's part of a 38-million dollar makeover for the tower that includes new restaurants and shops on the first floor. >> they are copycats. >> chicago is always first. let's go back out of the guys at the planetarium. >> good morning. we are out here for the total lunar eclipse the will happen in the next few

took it. the mother is free on bail. her two other children were removed from her home. a woman may be limping after an attempted burglary went wrong. this security video came from a home in washington state. it shows a woman in a hooded sweatshirt lurking around and trying to get inside. the homeowner says he heard started banging on the window. that's when the burglar fell off the roof. she then gets up and runs away. >> it's like keystone kops. >>the homeowner says the fall is everyone's favorite part of the video. >> we have passing out heroin and burglars following from the roof. oh dear. let's go out to marcus with some good news we hope. >> good morning. we are here, attracted this guy down. the senior astronomer is here with

treatment an american would receive. a woman from hanover park has died from west nile virus. she was in her 40's and had other health issues which weakened her abilities to fight the virus. one of three deaths in illinois entered a bid to west nile. health officials have a bias continued protection from mosquito bites which spread the disease. >> taken a look at the other top stories. police looking for a man who adopted a teenage girl off the streets in maywood and sexually assaulting her. this happened in river forest. the victim was walking alone friday after a homecoming dance. >> prime suspect in the murder release. he was gunned down last month, the 17 year-old boy. a girl shot and wounded while selling marijuana to five people. four are charged in the murder. police said they arrested the alleged shooter on monday but still cannot charge him because they have not gathered enough evidence.

need of social workers a week the residency requirement. >> city hall plans to expand a program using a new form of bond money. the mayor will seek to generate $17 million to enroll more than 2000 low-income children into pre k programs over the next four years. the money will come from social impact bonds, the tip of bond only paid back if the program succeeds. students would have to reach specific education benchmarks in order for the bond to be paid off. the mayor says the investment is worth the risk. the program is slated to begin next month. >> michele obama was in town to rally her democrats to get out and vote. several thousand people attended the rally at the pavilion. the first lady praise the governor for his efforts for education and raising the minimum wage. also urged democrats to get involved in non presidential elections. >> every day between now and november 4th, we need you out

to see that again. this is called the blood moon. it's a very big one. bigger than the one we saw in april. april was about 5 percent smaller because the moon is closer now. the moon is half covered by the the earth's shadow. it will soon be completely covered and then it will clear out again. a lunar eclipse is when the moon goes behind the earth's shadow and it's ok to see it with the naked eye. so go out and see if you can or just look at the screen. but look at the weather. temperatures in the mid 40's early on. climbing in some areas into the low 50s. sunrise just before 7:00 a.m.. it's all sunshine for today. we have a nice day coming highs in the mid-60s. we are expected clear conditions generally. some clouds across the region but no rain. take the umbrella and put it away as to get into the rest of the day. temperatures will climb into the mid '60s early on but as the get into the afternoon which top out at 65.
