provincial plaza. the local focus follows a frightening day in the canadian capital as a gunman sparked terror through parliament hill. he was later identified. his name was michael zehaf-bibeau ... born michael hall... 32 years old... the son of a quebec businessman. he converted to islam and reportedly changed his name after a history of drug arrests. still not know if he acted alone in the terrorist attack opening fire inside parliament before he was shot dead. that was soon after a soldier was shot and killed near one of canada's most revered sites. witnesses say a corporal was shot in the back while standing guard at the canada war memorial. >> the corporal was killed today, murdered in cold blood. canada will never be intimidated. in fact, this will lead us to strengthen our resolve and redouble our efforts and those of our national security agents to take all necessary steps to identify and

counter threats and keep canada safe here at home. >> the deadly attack in ottawa comes days after another islamic convert killed another soldier in a hit and run in quebec. the 25 year-old radical also shot dead by law enforcement. his canadian passport had been confiscated due to admitted intentions to travel to turkey to join a terrorist activity. authorities have not yet said if the two attacks this week are linked. the u.s. ambassador to canada is from chicago. he was among those in lockdown yesterday. he is ok. chicago police say they will continue to monitor developments to assess what security needs to be provided here. back to you. >>one man is dead and another

wounded in a shooting in richton park. police were called to the 3600 block of sauk trail... near an auto-zone store. it happened at about 7 o'clock last night. they found one man dead on a sidewalk. another man was found in the store with a gunshot wound. his injuries are not life- threatening. a child who arrived in chicago, from liberia, will be tested for ebola. the child has been in the hospital since he threw up during his flight to o'hare. health officials are having him tested for ebola as a precaution. another traveler from liberia has been moved out of isolation and will not be tested. governor quinn announced the state now has an ebola task force to work with hospitals in chicago. starting monday, travelers from liberia, sierra leone, and guinea will be required to report their temperature to health officials daily, for three weeks. second day of no class at a skokie middle school...after a threat on instagram. the threats directed at 6th graders from mccracken middle school began monday and continued into tuesday. the threats were anonymous... and isolated to only that school.. they are still trying to figure out who's behind it.

a suspected serial killer has been charged with the murder of a second woman in northwest indiana. police say darren vann killed anith jones for a friend of a friend. vann told police he was paid 3- hundred dollars, and given drugs worth another 2-hundred. he said jones was an escort, who he arranged to meet at a house that was being staged for possible sale. vann said he had sex with jones, then strangled her in five minutes. police say he stuffed her body in a trash can and left it in the woods. vann told police he rushed home to take care of his brother's kids, then returned that night to move jones to an abandoned home in gary ... where he covered her in teddy bears and tires. the new charges came as vann made his first court appearance, and demonstrated some bizarre behavior. >> he refused to come out because of his concern about why so many people were in that court and why he was not taken to a regular court room. >>vann initially refused to enter the courtroom yesterday, to answer charges in the murder of afrikka hardy at a motel in hammond. once he did, court lasted just two minutes because vann

wouldn't talk to the judge. she postponed the hearing until next wednesday, and warned vann that he could stay in jail the rest of his life ... if he continued to refuse to participate in the proceedings. vann is suspected of killing at least seven women in northwest indiana, even though he's only been charged with two ... so far. after his arrest in the hammond murder, he told police where to find the other victims. they were all in abandoned homes in gary, where a vigil was held last night. >> nobody give that monster permission to take anybody's life. >> why did to do this to her? she did not deserve to be killed the way she was killed. >>three of the victims have not been identified. the lake county coroner's office has received calls from 17 families who are searching for missing loved ones. they've submitted d-n-a samples to the coroner, to see if they are a match. senator dick durbin and republican state senator jim oberweis faced off iin their only televised debate. durbin attacked oberweis for

brad schneider, who faces a strong challenge by republican bob dols. biden returns to the chicago area next monday. as expected, mayor emanuel has chosen a new city treasurer. kurt summers junior was once chief of staff for cook county board president toni preckwinkle. his grandfather served uner the late mayor harold washington. once he is confirmed by the city council, summers will replace the outgoing treasurer stephanie neely, who is returning to a private sector investment position. a lump of gold... about the size of your hand... could be worth nearly a half-a-million dollars. the gold nugget was discovered in july by a gold prospector in california. it weighs about five pounds. somehow the nugget was missed when prospectors swept through in the 18-40's and 50's during the gold rush. it's on display and up for sale at san francisco's fall antique show over the weekend. >> demetrius if you're looking for a good prison for erin ...

there were more protests in ferguson after confidential details about the michael brown shooting were leaked. protesters marched from where brown was shot to the ferguson police department last night. officers pushed the group back as they tried to cross the street. two people were arrested for throwing things. this comes after brown's official autopsy was leaked. it says he was shot in the hand at close range and that his blood was on officer darren wilson's gun, uniform, and car interior. that could support wilson's version in which he says brown reached for his gun. >> the person can be up like this to assault dew and a gunshot wound can go from front to back. a person can be surrendering and the gunshot wound goes from front to back. have to be very careful looking at this. >>the autopsy says brown was shot six times. the grand jury is expected to announce next month whether officer wilson should be indicted. a 12-year old girl accused of stabbing a classmate 19 times to please the fictional character "slender man" has been

ruled mentally fit to stand trial. anissa wier and her friend morgan geyzer allegedly lured one of their classmates into the woods and stabbed her nearly to death in may. they claim they did it for a character called slender man, who stalks and traumatizes children. geyzer has already been declared mentally incompetent. wier's attorney says they're challenging the ruling that she's mentally fit. a woman in florida set her roommate on fire. but she had a reason. melissa sellers says, carlos ortiz threw out her spaghetti and meatballs. the couple argued at ortiz's home in clearwater. a friend says sellers doused ortiz with nail polish remover, then pulled out a lighter and set him ablaze. he's in critical condition. she's charged with aggravated battery. she now claims it was an accident. you've heard the rap on toddlers... look away for a second... and you don't know what they'll get themselves into. well, in maryville, tennessee, 18-month-old colin lambert... got himself into a toy vending machine. his grandmother was checking a text for a moment... she looked

cathedral. chicago public schools will sell the first of the school buildings that were closed last year. the board of ed unanimously approved the sale of the former peabody elementary school... to svigos asset management company for $3-and-a-half million dollars. the west town school was one of only three closed schools that reached a bid stage for sale. the city closed almost 50 elementary schools last year. chicago public schools wants to hold off on giving its students a new standardized test. year. a newly discovered dinosaur is being described in the most scientific terms.. researchers are calling it 'goofy and weird.' a full skeleton of this dinosaur was found in mongolia. it's about 16-feet tall and 36- feet long. it has a duck-bill on its head and a hump on its back. there are no teeth, but it has feathers, and it eats like a vacuum cleaner. scientists say it walked around on two legs like a cross between barney the dinosaur and jar jar binks, from star wars. >> goofy and weird that's how we call demetrius. see that was a

seeing a huge rise as well. this is something that is not super common and to have a few pets have this be a field situation within a few weeks is rare. but it's concerning. >> what is it and how does it spread? >> a bacterial disease. it's not a wimpy disease. this is something that when they are sick they need antibiotics for weeks if not months to get rid of. it shows up very much like any disease, they are tired, they don't eat well, they're acting sec. could be the flu. but if it goes too far it's something that we can't fix. and how it spreads is basically the root urine. wildlife is out there with raccoons and deer and pets can walk through a puddle or like a puddle or something like that and pick it up. it's

in the past 10 years, people have switched over to a three- year fax edition protocols. this is not a vaccine that lasts three years. you can get one for rabies the last three years and people think it's a good three- year thing. things like this need to be given every single year to dogs. it's very preventable. the other thing is, there are readers out there that have told their clients, don't get the vaccine because it may cause an allergic reaction. that is old thinking. vaccines for this are very pure and very unlikely to cause any reaction. very good at protecting them from getting this disease. >> is this just for dogs or cats as well? >> capt. get it. it's very rare. no vaccine for that. the best thing to say is if either a dog or cat showed signs of lethargy get them to the bed away that's the best chance of fixing that early on.

exciting times of a college career. >> i'm a college man now. it's good to be great. >> if only finding the perfect remember that easy. many diversities have this in place where students take surveys with parents--pairing them up with general interest does not always lead to a good bump body. in fact a bad rate can lead to bad grades negatively affecting the rest of a college student experience even long term career goals. >> students leave school. 22%, one of five students leaves a campus before the second year and it's an enormous costly problem. because the government and taxpayers about $16 billion per year. >> when andrea heard that a family member was having one of these bad experiences, she knew there had to be a better way to find a roommate. together with

her longtime business partner, they came up with compatibility. >> it's simple. we did a big literature, what out there could impact the relationship? >> it just like other systems, it starts with a survey, but it goes deeper. it asks students more than 100 questions all crafted to get to know who the students are. not just what they like to do. >> self-esteem is like 10 questions much as one. it came up with categories and groups of questions. and we tried it out. we tested it and what came back was we were able to say it looks like these are the things that matter and these don't and cut out all the other questions. >> to the backstop, what to do with all the data. they had developed a software platform for universities they say can automatically sort through all

the answers helping administrators or the students themselves find the perfect match. >> so we take all the matches ever the matches but there's a degree. so i drank. >> so far it has been tested at the university of new haven and a response from students was very favorable. >> will we look at something called. a fact. we ask about the impact your roommate had on your study habits, your communications, on yourself care and those numbers were significantly higher than people who chose compatibility. >> it can't reach out and shake every hand and say you matter to me. so why not go build a relationship with your students through the students. if they perceive one person cares about them they will feel like they matter to you. it's a worthwhile investment. >> compatibility, you could
