several agencies have rounded up people in chicago connected to their lengthy investigation of a growing scam. cracking cards. >> chicago is at the epicenter of this came. it has grown across the country. joins us with details. they're especially targeting college students. becoming more attractive to criminals who see it as more lucrative and less dangerous. authorities have arrested 19 people and they are looking for 10 more suspects. >> less risk more reward. it has been going on for years. social media has added another layer of anonymity. making it that much harder for authorities to catch them. i've been told by is suspect that we interviewed and is an epidemic. they

referred to the crack cocaine epidemic in the '80s. it is so widespread that there is no hierarchy and. anybody who can get a card officials say he deposited fake checks to obtain $6,000. the con men convince people on social media to give up their banking information their debit card and pin #. look at this posting. once they get your card and deposit a phony check at an atm. then he takes the money out of the they're in atm a casino or a currency exchange before the bank even knows that the check is no good. >> harder for us to really track these guys down. they're making hundreds of thousands of dollars.

badly decomposed that they have yet to be identified. police say vaughn confess to a killing. evidence found on his phone led to bonn. it was then that they confessed to killing the other women and led them to the bodies. no motive has been given for the other deaths. >> >> to to check in the court on january 9th. that is if he does not get charged and the other five cases. none of the family members. none of the victims' family ury.er i r s . we d that in the end of prosecutor bernard carter will be prosecuting this case.

>>gas company crews are on the scene of two separate gas leaks both on the south side. one of the gas leaks is at harper high school in the 65 -hundred block of south wood. several students have been transferred to area hospitals for exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide. the high school has been evacuated. a little further south, a building was evacuated at 76th and ashland. where com ed workers hit a gas main. the chicago catholic archdiocese plans to close and consolidate some schools. cardinal george made the announcement today. citing rising costs and low enrollment. no details were given about which schools will be affected. the archdiocese has 240-elementary and high schools in the chicago area with an enrollment of 82- thousand students. governor pat quinn has directed illinois state board of education chairman gery chico to work with waukegan school district 60 to reach a resolution in their ongoing teacher strike. wgn's nancy loo reports today's negotiations between teachers and school officials follow a tumultuous school board meeting that

was cut short after a yelling match. >> negotiations resume this morning here at the teacher's union hall. he motions are brought after a rocket school board meeting last night. it was so heated it ended with board members walking out on the heels of a memorable outburst that the waukegan mayor calls an embarrassment to the community. there is like being in a jerry springer event. there is that unusual. tests still miffed by what he saw and heard that the school board meeting. prompted an unexpected outburst from the board member. >> crowd had erupted after hearing public comment on the teachers' strike would be cut short. the unruly atmosphere brought the board meeting to an abrupt end after

hot lava from hawaii's famed kilauea volcano has reached at least one neighboring community. in the small town

of pahoa the lava flow melted through a fence... and it now covers at least two families' yar there as 50 homes in the path of the lava. it's advancing about 40 feet per hour. the volcano erupted in june... and the two- dege h traveled ab m since th there's no way to stop it until it cools on its own. the denver broncos fan who disappeared from a game five days ago has been found safe. 53-year-old paul kitterman was found 112 miles away in pueblo, colorado. kitterman vanished last thurday while waiting outside a bathroom at mile high stadium. where the broncos were playing the san diego chargers. he had gone to the game with his frhis said this bav not typical of him, and he wasn't intoxicated. local news reports say, he told police he wanted to get away to some place warm. police say no criminal charges are expected. former baseball star jose canseco had surgery last night after he accidentally shot

himself in the hand yesterday afternoon. las vegas police say he was cleaning a semi-automatic pistol, at his home, when it discharged and nearly shot off his middle finger. doctors told canseco he will never have full use of his left hand again. canseco is an admitted steroid user who played 17 years in the major leagues... his final season was with the white sox in 2001. the federal trade commission is suing "a-t and t" for ripping off its wireless customers by throttling data speeds. the lawsuit claims "a-t and t" slows down customers' internet speeds when they used a certain amount of data. it didn't matter if the customer bought unlimited data plans. the f-t-c says more than "three and a half" million people were affected over several years. "a-t and t" says the allegations are baseless and an intrusion into normal network practices. next in sports some bulls stars will be experiencing limits as to how much they're allowed to play early on this season. and later in
