one man turned and fired at them. he missed. they didn't. he's at stroger hospital. police recovered a gun at the scene. the second man ran away. after four weeks... the waukegan teachers strike is over. shortly before midnight... the district board and the teachers union reached a tentative deal. patrick elwood is in waukegan with the details. >> it was along in time coming. the teachers' strike that began october 2nd appears to be over but the earliest hits will be back to school will be monday. the governor dispatched the state board of education chairman yesterday to try to break the impasse after tensions boiled over on tuesday at a meeting with one board member telling agitated and freshet parents to sit down and shut up. the remark for which he apologized later. but after the marathon negotiation was

brokered, a tentative agreement has been reached just before midnight. the chief negotiator for district 60 tells us what happens next. >> school will start friday for teachers only. and then monday school will fully resume for the students. the 17,000 students will return to school 1200 students and teachers returning. >> the teacher union members were set to vote on the deal later today. we don't have terms of how this deal shakes out. in terms of halt many days of school the kids are or have to make up in june, that is still get to be answered. but it will be some going into the third week of june 2015. data >>university of chicago medicine and its nurses are locked in contract

negotiations... and a strike may be on the horizon. u-of-c said it won't reach a new labor agreement with its nurses by friday... when the contract expires. staffing levels and shifts. they are still not talking pay. the lead negotiator for the nurses says a strike vote will likely come soon. the archdiocese of chicago is closing nine schools to cut costs, as it continues to struggle with low enrollment. cardinal george announced yesterday that six elementary schools will close at the end of the year. another six will merge into three schools. and, two others will be transitioned into early childhood centers. the decisions are final ... no schools will be given reprieves, like in the past. the closings will affect more than 12-hundred students, and 230 employees. >> the families that we have, the fact that their record to close the school right now without warning was not good. >> the decisions were difficult. we know it will serve families now going ford in the long term.

>> it will be sustainable but is now but into the future. >>there are more than 82- thousand catholic school students throughout the chicago area. incoming archbishop blase cupich was informed of the closures. a nurse who was held in isolation for ebola concerns says she will not obey her state's requested quarantine. kaci hickox was kept in a tent in new jersey after she returned from treating ebola patients in sierra leone. she was allowed to go home to maine after she tested negative for the virus and no symptoms. she says she's still symptom free, so she doesn't see why she should still be quarantined for 21-days. the state of maine plans to file a court order to do so. hickox says she plans to fight any legal action taken against her. >> i do not understand why this common-sense approach to ask someone to stay in their homes for 21 days during the to bashan. , why it's not a reasonable request.

>> we estimate decisions based on science. i'm healthy. it could hug me and shake my hand. there is no way i would keep you ebola. >>taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. one person was hospitalized when scaffolding collapsed at a work site in hyde park. witnesses say a worker was on the scaffolding when it gave way near 54th place and harper. he was doing brickwork on the building. the injured worker was taken to northwestern memorial hospital in serious condition. a suspected serial killer pled "not guilty" to two murder charges in lake county, indiana. just a week ago, darren -vann- refused to enter a plea -- or say anything at all -- at his first court appearance. he was more cooperative at yesterday's hearing. police say vann has confessed to killing seven women and hiding some of their bodies in abandoned houses. a chicago rapper is one of 29 data people busted in a "cracking card" scheme. prosecutors say kevin ford --

who calls himself "bandman kevo" -- was part of an operation that recruited young people to open bank accounts, then hand over their account information. leaders of the scheme deposited bogus checks into an account, then withdraw the money at a-t- m's or currency exchanges before the checks bounce. right now there's no job vacancy, but the cubs appear to be closer to hiring joe maddon as their new manager. there are reports that say maddon has agreed to come to the cubs and that a deal is imminent. maddon led the rays to four playoff berths during his nine years in tampa. that includes one trip to the world series. but hiring maddon would mean saying good-bye to rick renteria, who just finished his first season as cubs manager. renteria has two years remaining on his contract. the world series between the giants and royals came down to game seven in kansas city. giants were up one when starting pitcher madison bumgarner came in on two days rest. he held the royals to two hits over five innings. royals had the tying run at third with two outs, when bumgarner gets salvador perez to foulout.

monday it will be back to school for 17,000 students. the governor despatched the state board of education chairman yesterday to try to break the impasse after tensions boiled over on tuesday at a school board beating with one board member telling agitated and frustrated parents, said down and shut up. a remark for which she apologized later it was emblematic of what was happening. after the marathon negotiating session was brokered the tentative agreement reached just before midnight, the teachers' union president says what happens next. >> what it means that we have tentatively agreed on the contract and therefore there will be an informational meeting for the members tomorrow and following that, they will vote on the contract and if it ratifies they will be back in the class on friday. but the teachers will be back on

friday? students will be in class on monday? >> correct. student monday, teachers friday. they have to get into their classrooms to do what needs to be done. >> before that happens, the teachers will vote on the agreement. that should happen later today. no word yet on how many of the missed days that the students will have to make up in june. back to you. >>a family from aurora is urging the person who took a bionic arm the arm belongs to 16-year-old sam luther. he was born without the lower part of his left arm. but about a year ago he got a 100-thousand dollar bionic prosthetic. but his arm disappeared after he took it off on a trip to chicago ten days ago. he left it on the floor of the car because the battery had died. when he got home, he realized it was gone. >> it's a bummer. but that's life. things get stolen. but

really need this back because delicate a lot. >> it's like stealing a wheelchair from somebody who needs it. why would you do that? >>the family retraced their steps and discovered that a man was seen using it as a weapon in a street fight. his dad is offering a reward for its return. a legal battle could be next for a nurse who's fighting a quarantine because she does not have ebola. kaci hickox was kept in an isolation tent in new jersey after she treated ebola patients in sierra leone. she was allowed to finish her quarantine back home in maine after she tested negative for the virus and showed no symptoms. that quarantinne doesn't end until november 10-th, but hickox says its unnecessary. the state of maine plans to file a court order to keep her inside. >> there are other cases for individuals have not tested positive, did not believe there

loop. he says he voted for governor quinn. he also said he supports a higher state minimum wage. and he said, every registered voter should turn out at the polls, regardless of party affiliation. early voting ends sunday. election day is next tuesday. chicago elevator inspectors failed to complete more than 3- quarters of their annual inspections last year. that's resulted in about 770- thousand dollars in lost fees. auditors also found that follow-up inspections were routinely missed after violations were cited. inspections are supposed to be done at least once a year. the findings follow a 20-12 tribune investigation that found most chicago elevators hadn't had their annual inspection. a reform program was launched in 2009 to reduce the backlog. it will be the t-v event of the weekend... nik wallenda is set to arrive in chicago for his tightrope walk above the city. wallenda's website calls it the "skycraper" walk. wallenda will walk the tightrope from the marina city west towers... over the chicago river to the leo burnett building... then back to marina city.

failed rocket launch? the rocket exploded and crashed back to work six seconds after being launched on tuesday. pay close attention to the engines because they were made in russia in the 1960's. no one was hurt but the project was destroyed. this debris also landed on a virginia island miles away. the rocket was made by a company that used refurbished russian engines. there have been some issues but the engines before and the company planned to replace them. >> liftoff, atlas 5 rocket carrying the eighth gps satellite 49 states air force. >> this one went better. it went much farther than the one in virginia. the ellis 5 liftoff
