getting a new governor, but pat quinn is not ready to give up his job just yet. republican bruce rauner is the declared winner in the governor's race. right now he has over 50- percent of the vote. quinn has 47-percent. libertarian chad grimm has three percent. governor quinn has not conceded the race. he says there are enough votes that still have to be counted, that could make a difference. but rauner sounds confident that the job is his. >> this is our time. this is the transformation. . we will not accept the status quo. we are going in a new direction. the voters have spoken. >> we are the government of the many. we do have to take on the government of the money. and we will never, never yield until all the boats are in. >>quinn is counting on early

voters and mail-in votes in the chicago area to make up the difference. there are also provisional ballots cast by newly registered voters. right now, quinn is down by more than 150-thousand votes. and believe it or not - people were still casting their votes about an hour ago. hundreds of people waited hours to vote due to numerous problems at polling sites across the city. tonya francisco is live at the chicago board of elections in the loop with that story. >> chaos is what they said. the last ballot was cast at 315 a n on the city's north side. the board of elections said if you are in line by 7:00, you have the right to vote. the reason it took so long had to do with the fact that there were not enough election judges. also issues with faulty equipment. and what is called the greece. vote in which allowing people to vote on

the same day. there were only five spite's for that. wells park was one of them. people waited in line for more than eight hours. at one point the mayor came by to shake hands and the aldermen even bought pizza for those still in line. earlier, the board of elections determined more than 2000 election judges either resigned or did not show up. after receiving a series of phone calls telling them they needed more training or they needed to vote a certain way to be a judge. voters we spoke to say it was chaos. >> they were understaffed. not enough people working. and there were issues with machines. we found many times that either there were open machines but the staff was not efficient enough to get them to the point, or the machines were having glitches.

>> the board of elections says it will launch an investigation into who exactly is behind those calls that disrupted the election. as for the mail in a provisional ballots, there are 45,000 of them still in suburban cook county that need to be counted. that will get underway at the board of elections at 830 this morning. back to you. >>there was no surprise in the race for senate. senator dick durbin won re- election, with 53-percent of the vote. republican jim oberweis had 43- percent. libertarian sharon hansen had just about four percent. >> this was a hard-fought campaign against some of the toughest political winds i've ever faced. people across illinois and america want more. the want a congress that produces, one that works with

the president to solve problems. >> it is very difficult to defeat incumbent u.s. senator. even more difficult to do it in a state that has the same predominant political philosophy as that incumbent. >> voters in the north suburban tenth congressional district returned republican bob dold to office after a two-year absence. dold defeated incumbent democrat brad schneider. >> it's better to win. i think from my perspective, so many of these people put their hearts and souls into the campaign and the hallmark of the district is thoughtful leadership. that has been an opportunity, one-term vs one and we want to go back and talk about trying to break the gridlock in washington. >> tonight we fell short of our goal but we did come close. we fought incredibly hard the whole way. i am proud and humbled by the campaign that we ran and i

will rest easy knowing that we did everything we could. >>and in the 11th district... democratic representative bill foster is headed back to congress. he defeated republican state representative darlene senger. foster... called his win a victory for the middle class. >> for labor and business and for good manufacturing jobs, which is probably the reason i got into politics. this is a victory for students and teachers and parents who believe in strong public schools and making college more affordable for all american families. >> this was a tough district to begin with. we moved the pendulum along way. i just want to say thank you for everything that you guys have done and let's keep that message going. >>in the comptroller's race, republican incumbent judy baar topinka wins another term. topinka declared victory over lieutenant governor sheila simon with 49 percent of the vote, topping simon's 46

percent. in the treasurer's race... a statistical dead heat. republican state representative tom cross and democratic state senator mike frerichs are deadlocked at 48 percent of the vote. both candidates pledged to clean up the treasurer's office. voters in illinois weighed in on several referendums -- including one to raise the minimum wage and to increase income taxes on millionaires. both referendums passed overwhelmingly. 63 percent of voters supported increasing the state's minimum wage from 8-25 and hour to ten dollars on january first. 61 percent voted yes - to add a 3-percent tax on incomes of more than one million dollars to increase funding for schools. the referendums are non-binding and do not affect the law in illinois but they could give democrats in springfield an idea for future changes. the voters of america chose a new direction for the u.s. senate, by sending at least seven new republicans to washington... and perhaps as

many as nine. that's enough to give the g-o-p control of both houses of congress for the first time in eight years. dissatisfaction with president obama's policies played a big part. >> tomorrow we go to work to fix congress that is out of touch and out of time. >> the only reason we are here tonight is because this message resonates so we have to change the direction of our country. >>another senate pickup for the republicans was north carolina's thom tillis. charles baker of massachusetts was one of four republicans to oust democrat *governors. larry hogan won in maryland. but the democrats got one pickup... in pennsylvania, where tom wolf defeated republican incumbent tom corbett. here's a little graphic to help explain the election returns to you *younger viewers... with legos. it starts with the republicans -- the red legos -- controlling 45 seats in the senate... and changes to reflect the *new senate, with at least *52 republicans. two *more red lego's could be added by the time alaska's

are the big election headlines: bruce rauner appears to have won the race for illinois governor. but governor quinn has not conceded yet, saying there are still too many votes that haven't been counted. and the republican party has taken over control of the united states senate, winning seven seats. check out the numbers on our website, w-g-n t-v dot slash results. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. a developing story in the southwest suburbs. one person was found dead after a fire ripped through a house in burbank, overnight. it happened on 86th and major avenue. we'll have more details as they become available. police have put out an alert... on the sexual assault in west town on halloween. this was at the 800 block of west wayman street. police released surveillance

video of two men leaving a building and walking down a street. they're suspected of beating and assaulting two women. the women were walking to their car when the two men attacked them and took off in a light or gold four-door car. it's a life sentence for the woman who lured two men to their deaths at an apartment in joliet. the sentence against bethany mc-kee was handed down yesterday. mc-kee invited terrance rankins and eric glover to a party, knowing that three friends were waiting there to rob them. when glover and rankins resisted, they were strangled. joshua miner was convicted for his role in the murders. adam landerman awaits trial. and alisa massaro pled guilty to reduced charges. a cook county sheriff's officer accused of stealing from drug dealers takes his own life. officer stanley kogut was found yesterday morning in a cell at the metropolitan correctional center in the loop. he was arrested monday, along with his partner, robert vaughn, for allegedly stealing cash, marijuana and illegal cigarettes. they were busted during an f-b-i sting. the meteor sighting over chicago was too good to be true. at least nine people reported seeing what looked like a

authorities and every single county including chicago and cook county count their boats. the walkout tomorrow and the next day and the next day. >>quinn is counting on early voters and mail-in votes in the chicago area to narrow the gap. there are also those provisional ballots cast by newly registered voters. some of the votes weren't cast until just over an hour ago.. numerous problems at polling sites across the city created waits of more than eight hours for hundreds of people. tonya francisco is live at the chicago board of elections in the loop with that story. >> there were some determined voters. they waited in line more than eight hours just to hear their voices heard. trust me, they were not happy about it. 1230 a m our crew caught up with several people on the north

side and said they had just finished voting. they got in line at around 4:30 p.m. and after spending a few hours out in the cold the finding made it inside only to have to wait another six hours to get a ballot. they said there weren't enough election judges. also issues with the equipment now working and issues with greece. voting which allows people to register and vote on the same day. only five sites that will spark was one. earlier the board of elections determined more than 2000 election judges either resigned or did not show up after a series of calls went out to telling them they needed more training or the need to vote a certain way in order to be a judge. the board of elections is launching an investigation. meanwhile, those who voted at wells park want to know why it took so long. >> there were to bottlenecks. one person was registering people at one stage of the process and then two or three

election headlines: illinois will have its first republican governor in twelve years. bruce rauner appears to have won 50 percent to 47 percent over incumbent pat quinn, with 99 percent of precincts reporting. quinn has not conceded because all the votes have not been counted. the other chicago area incumbent who was defeated: 10th district congressman brad schneider. he lost to republican bob dold. and the republican party has won control of the u-s senate. more results on w-g-n tv dot com slash results another nation is joining the fight against "isis" terrorists. new zealand is sending a small team of military experts to the mideast, to learn what help the country can provide in defeating "isis." new zealand says it has also identified as many as 80 "isis" sympathizers who may be *home- grown* terrorists, posing a threat to national security.

with the midterm elections behind him, president obama faces pressure to expand america's role in the fight against islamist terrorism. at present, american airstrikes are targeting only "isis" positions. but a senior administration official says, obama is weighing the possibility of striking positions held by the al-qaeda affiliate jabhat al nusra. we're learning more about how accused cop killer eric frein was able to evade police for as long as he did. frein used a laptop computer to keep himself updated on news accounts of the police search of the pocono mountains. he was able to hide for almost seven weeks, until searchers caught him at an abandoned airport. frein will face trial for the sniper shootings that killed a pennsylvania state trooper, and injured a second trooper. n-f-l star adrian peterson's child abuse case ends with a plea deal that keeps him out of prison. peterson appeared in court in texas yesterday. he pleaded 'no contest' to one count of misdemeanor reckless assault. a judge sentenced him to two years probation, a 4-thousand

dollar fine, and 80-hours of community service. peterson was originally facing prison time for felony child abuse. prosecutors say he received no special treatment. peterson remains deactivated from the vikings roster. the n-f-l still has to decide whether he will be suspended. the "movember" movement is underway... that's the month- long effort to get men to wear mustaches to help raise awareness of men's health issues, like prostate and testicular cancers.. and one guy has create a clever way to promote it.. >> singing and let it grow >> that was great. >> can't do it anymore.

governor a 66 percent chance to win. he said he found that in the gubernatorial polls across the country there was a heavy bias going to the democrats. i thought that was interesting. a lot of the polls had pat quinn up a few points. but his opponent since have won by five points they say. the conceit all the predictions on line. the reprieve spot on. but in the illinois there were some problems with our races. and some national news, we have an american idol contested who was riding. let's take a look what happened. the result did not go the way we wanted it to. but we'd walk down this path towards or twice before. >> he was running for a congressional seat in north carolina. he lost to his opponent. and he said he has run for congress before and lost. >> time to go back to singing.
