>>temperatures are dropping. 20-degrees since many of us left the house this morning. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. our top story. temperatures near freezing but it could be worse. in minnesota residents are used to long, cold, snowy winters.. but they usually don't have to start dealing with it this early in the season. snowfall of ten inches or more was common across minnesota yesterday.. and as you can see, it created quite a mess. a spokesman for the minnesota state patral says troopers responded to nearly 500 crashes across the region. they've had plenty of snow this week in parts of wisconsin, as well. here in the chicago area. many people

lots of all the dignitaries on stage. all of them eager to pay their respect to the nation. this morning there was the traditional military posting of the flag. can browse and music from the naval marching band. the political drama of the warning that occurred when the governor pat quinn and governor elect bruce rauner entered the room. the never shook hands and never spoke to each other. during his remarks pat quinn never acknowledged that bruce rauner was in the building. he instead kept his remarks strictly on dealing with the military. >> we need to make everyday veterans day. prominent among those who answered the call to duty and who volunteered. who like the old testament prophet isaiah said here i

is surrounded by members of the press and asked whether or not he and governor clinton spoken to each other, he refused to answer any questions about. just said nothing. the least we can say that the two main politicians today decided to keep the issue strictly on dealing with honoring veterans today. >> a meeting between governor elect bruce rauner and democratic leaders is in the works. rauner says he will meet with house speaker mike madigan and senate president john cullerton in the near future. no dates have been set. cullerton's staff confirmed they've been talking. rauner says he's already meeting with general assembly members, every day. he says they will focus on building short term and long term budget plans. a former illinois public servant is about to receive the government's highest civilian honor. the white house will award former congressman abner

mikva the presidential medal of freedom. after five terms in the house, mikva served on the federal appeals court. he was also president clinton's white house counsel. at age 88, mikva is still involved in the political process. he heads the "mikva challenge," encouraging high school students to get involved in public service. u-s families of soldiers missing in action are fighting goverment bureaucracy and are demanding closure. 83-thousand military personnel are listed as m-i-a and 90-percent of those men and women fought in world war two. a report issued last month blamed the problem on poor management at two defense department agencies charged with tracking down remains of soldiers. despite a 100- million dollar annual budget. the agencies only identified 60- remains last year. a wealthy businessman from chicago is taking matters into his own hands. clayton kuhles personally finances missions to locate and recover u-s airmen. who disappeared in china and burma during world war two. khules and his team have located 26

veterans. police are asking witnesses to come forward in the accident that killed a 22 year old woman and her dog. emily driscoll was walking her greyhound when they were hit by a car at the intersection of book road and rickert drive on sunday night. the 74-year-old driver has not been charged, but police are still investigating the accident. driscoll was a student at the college of dupage, and planned to marry her boyfriend after they graduated. police want to hear from any one who witnessed the accident or has additional information. investigators are looking into a fire on the citys south west side that damaged seven garages overnight. >> we were asleep in the house. once they

know we hear people banging on the doors and windows. cut up and looked out the window. saw that the neighbors grow it was on fire. police went door-to- door to wake up and alert residents of the situation. no one was injured. twelve people in illinois are being monitored for possible ebola exposure. they are not under quarantine, but they're advised to report their temperatures and any potential symptoms. state health officials are not saying where they're located. they say each case has a low risk of actually having the virus. in new york city, dr. craig spencer is being hailed as a hero. spencer was released from the hospital today after being diagnosed with ebola last month. dr. spencer treated ebola patients in guinea. and even though he spent five days around new york, before he was hospitalized, he said following protocol helped contain the disease and keep it from spreading to any one else. now, he says, he'd like to have media focus attention on

lee joon-seok was found guilty of violating "seamen's law" and abandonment when his ferry sunk on april 16. prosecutors sought the death penalty, alleging that he didn't attempt to help the passengers evacuate. more than 300 people a federal investigation into the death of joan rivers reveals the manhattan clinic where she was being treated made several mistakes before her death. the report cites the clinic for several major errors. including failing to properly monitor rivers vital signs and her sedation. investigators also cited rivers' personal doctor for taking a selfie during the procedure. melissa rivers who is suing the clinic said she "is outraged by the misconduct and mismanagement." officials at the yorkville endoscopy clinic said a new plan is in place to address issues raised in the report. lava flowing through a small town in hawaii has destroyed its first home. it took just 45 minutes to burn down the home in village, on the big island. the house has been vacant since august, when residents began preparing for potential evacuations. the main lava flow has stalled since october 30th. local officials are concerned of smaller breakouts like this.

an oklahoma oilman will pay a billion- dollar divorce judgment to his ex- wife. a judge in oklahoma city handed down the order against harold hamm, the c- e-o of continental resources. when it's all paid off, sue ann hamm will be one of america's wealthiest women. she'll get about a third of it by the end of the year then about 7 million a month for the next 8 years. while today is veteran's day in the u-s, it's armistice day in the u-k. both are meant to honor veterans and mark the end of world war one. at the tower of london a public art display is grabbing quite a bit of attention. 888 thousand ceramic red poppies have been planted, one for each british soldier killed during the war. still to come this midday >> side dishes for the holidays to complete the meal for your guests.

>>the noise complaints in neighborhoods around o'hare are getting the attention of local members of congress. representatives mike quigley, jan schakowsky and tammy duckworth are demanding improvements to the complaint process. they're asking the department of aviation for a staffed, dedicated line for noise complaints. complaints skyrocketed since flight patterns changed last year when a new runway opened. last tuesday, seven northwest suburbs and chicago voted for mandatory jet noise limits and fly quiet hours. congressional ethics investigators say, congressman bobby rush may be breaking federal and state law, by accepting a rent-free political office for more than two decades. it's in the lake meadows shopping center at 34-th and king drive. investigators want to know whether the landlord is getting special favors from rush. the chicago cubs will hand over all their records of the talks that led to the signing of joe maddon as the club's new manager. major league baseball is investigating

whether the cubs illegally tampered with maddon while he was still under contract with the tampa bay rays. maddon exercised an "opt-out" clause in his tampa bay contract, when the team's general manager took a job with the dodgers. the investigation could take a month. >> speaks to to the ears below average market participation. the bond market is closed for veterans day. the dollar down about 15. >> newly released emails show. g-m ordered a half- million ignition switches for a recall. before letting their customers know there was a problem. general motors placed the order six weeks before it began its recall for older chevy cobalt cars. they're linked to 32 deaths. since december, g-m has recalled 2-point-6 million cars for the defect. an attorney for the plaintiffs said there were at least 85 crashes and one death during the 6- week delay. g-m says it's made

reforms so that kind of delay would not happen again. it's facing multiple investigations, including a federal criminal inquiry. there's just one more holiday shopping season at south suburban lincoln mall. a judge has ordered the mall in matteson closed on january 7th. the judge says the owner is not properly maintaining the building. the crumbling structure has been ruled a danger with some sections demolished and faulty fire exits. while the closure will impact the small stores that operate there. it won't have an effect on the carson's that's attached to it. carson's will remain open. a new survey by the personal finance website, "wallet hub", ranks lincoln, nebraska.. gilbert, arizona.. and irvine, california as the top three best cities in the u-s for veterans leaving active service and returning to civilian life. it's based on the number of jobs available for people with military related skills. the overall veteran unemployment rate.. and the number of veteran-owned businesses. chicago ranks number 99 on the list of 100 cities.

times reports most residents at the meeting opposed to put the east lake view neighbors association voted to approve the city's zoning change that would allow the dispensary tilton. a scam involving a taxi cab driver stealing debit cards is being investigated by police in chicago and evanston. joe tosch says he took a yellow cab from boystown to buena park last month. he paid for the ride using his debit card but didn't realize the driver gave him back someone else's card. by the next morning... his account was empty and the bank was calling to ask about some suspicious transactions. >> i'm a person living paycheck to paycheck making things work the best that they can. it really hurts. >>police say they're using surveillance video and have several leads in this case and another one with similar circumstances. they recommend using a credit card because it's easier to dispute charges and watch to make sure no one ever takes a picture of your card or writes down the numbers.

chemicals found in everything from plastic water bottles to hairspray are linked to health conditions including infertility, diabetes and cancer. some experts say it's alarmist. but a group of concerned researchers are meeting today in brussels. they believe the risks are very real and are raising questions about the increasing exposure to chemicals. some chemicals. including b-p-a have been banned in certain products. and the u-s recommends consumers avoid microwaving food in plastic containers. as heat makes the chemical more likely to leach out. the world health organization estimates there are more than 800 of these chemicals currently in use. a medical mystery in florida. doctors are still not sure how a new mother came back to life. after not having a heartbeat for 45-minutes. ruby cassimiro went to the hospital in september to have a scheduled c-section. her daughter was born healthy but ruby soon developed complications and stopped breathing. a team worked for three hours to revive her. doctors think she had a rare condition
