>>a terrifying awakening. a small plane crashes into a home just inches from where people were sleeping. the pilot was killed and the f-a-a and the n-t-s-b are investigating. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. >>and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. wgn's julian crews is live near midway airport with our top story. >> the identity of the pilot has not been released. chicago firefighters and paramedics working for hours in order to remove the body from the wreckage. remarkably no one on the ground killed or even injured. >> they or in a

bedroom next to the living room. most of the plane is in the living room. they are very lucky where they were at. >> chicago fire chiefs said the plane missed the elderly couple by 8 in.. the crippled plane coming to rest in the couple's living room on the 6500 block of south box. not far from midway airport. the startethe startled couple was taken to safety. other miraculously occurrence in this plane crash was no fire. despite the fact that the wreckage was gushing aviation fuel. firefighters were able to quickly spray foam over the crash scene knocking down combustible fumes before the wreckage could ignite. national transportation investigators hope to have a preliminary report out within one week or so. >> all components of

the aircraft made it to the accident site. we're not dealing with an in- flight breakup. >> the pilot was scheduled to fly to chicago executive airport in wheeling. just before takeoff investigators say the pilot changed his flight plan to fly to columbus ohio. shortly after takeoff the pilot radioed that he was having engine troubles circling the airport. investigators say after getting immediate clearance to land but the plane fell short >> the commander 500 cargo plane plummeting out of the frigid sky and to a 1.5 story home. >> took the elderly couple in the as you look at a live picture. they told reporters that the couple was shook up. amazingly did not even suffered a scratch. >> the latest information we are hearing that the wreckage of this airplane probably sometime this afternoon they will remove it from the scene. they had to cut it out and to

different pieces. they cannot move the plane intact. >> very narrow streets here. but will have to move it to a location appear to hang her more than likely nearby where investigators can begin the process of exactly what happened here. >>firefighters battle huge flames in bitter cold temperatures at a former school in lincoln park. w-g-n's nancy loo is live on the north side with more on the damage to the historic building. >> after an all- night battle the fire has finally got here at the historic mulligan school. it has left the structure looking like an ice castle. it was under renovation for conversion to 24 condominiums. there is fear that the extensive damage will require demolition. it was a

battle that was literally hot and cold. firefighters braved below freezing temperatures to fight the flames. all the while residents held out hope that the building could be saved. >> i think it would be terrible. it is a gorgeous building. >> flames engulfed the upper floor soon after the fire was reported at 1:00 a.m.. the fire fight stretched through mid morning. the school dates back to 1890 and was under consideration for landmark status. the developer bought the vacant structure of a few years ago. renovations or under way to reopen as a condominium next spring. the progress has been plagued by vandalism. >> people have been taking apples from the trees and throwing them and breaking the windows. they have also have people jumping down from the tracks into the open building. >> the developer had attack dogs on site. factored into the battle for firefighters. >> that knocked down

the heavy volume of fire and try to make an interior attack to see if they could stop the spread of the fire. at that time they were confronted by dogs. crews were able to control the dogs and the two were eventually recovered by the security company. icing on the track and power lines lead to service disruptions for cta >> excitement has turned to sadness. >> i think it is tragic. it is horrible for our neighborhood. horrible for historic preservation. >> no one was injured in the fire. the recovered dogs are also said to be ok. because of the fire is under investigation. this is among the few empty school buildings that they were able to sell. live in lincoln park. the frigid temperatures are dipping even lower today. threatening to break a record that's been around for more than one-

the f-b-i is now investigating today's deadly attack at a synagogue in jerusalem because three of the victims are u-s citizens. the rabbis held dual citizenship in the u-s and israel. a fourth man was a dual british-israeli six worshipe also were injured whe twst men broke into the synagogue armed with a knife and an ax. police killed the attackers and arrested nine people believed to be involved in the plot. a hamas spokesman said the attack was in retaliation for the death of a palestinian bus driver but the group did not claim responsibility. a terrorist who played a role in the 9-11 attacks. claims saudi arabian royals peal provided tam withdi zaca moussaoui also says saudi
