all good news. but you have to get through to a first. winter is not leaving yet. snow showers early. not a heavy hit. the timing is going to be the biggest issue. half an inch across the area. not too much but it will fall during the morning rush hour commute. sometimes delights note makes it worse. seeing some snow coming in from the west. right now across portions of the county its a quick disturbance. dumping snow across the region. here we are on the computer model. you can see the snow out of here by early afternoon. temperatures are going breakaway. it's 19 at o'hare. 19 at chicago. 17 in dekalb. we have wind chill of

one degree above zero. cooler than normal. 26 will be the temperature into the afternoon. the high reaches 29. tomorrow we make 14 for the low in the morning. high temperature 23. fry, 29. if you saw yesterday was a rough day care ready. >> we could use those extra temperature decrease because yesterday we had so many problems. there were so many problems as today on the el tracks with the icing. it looks like service has recovered although at the slow pace. we are seeing some minor delays. i could see even more into the rush hour today. wanted to mention the earlier crash we had overnight at 88 and 290, pre significant with serious injuries that has cleared. the majority of construction has been suspended because of the cold weather.

>>a van full of young children hit a tree and burst into flames in jackson park, just before midnight. tonya francisco is live at comer children's hospital with more. >> 3 of the children were brought here. to adults in the minivan taken to northwestern hospital. all the fire department says they have not life-threatening injuries. that is amazing considering when you see the video of the aftermath of the accident. the mercury villager minivan was gutted. the inside tires all melted and destroyed by the flames that erupted after the minivan hit a tree in jackson park. police say the driver was heading west of 67 through the park when she somehow lost control and hit a tree just before midnight. by the time police and paramedics

arrived, everyone was out of the vehicle. seven people in all, five children under the age of 15. but looks of it, there may have been least one infant in the minivan. a car seat was on the van. all victims taken to hospital in critical condition. the fire department says there injuries to not appear to be like britain. no word from the police on whether the driver will be taken in for charges. live in hyde park. back to you. >>every state in america is dealing with unusually cold weather, more than a month before the official start of winter. and nowhere is it worse, than in buffalo, new york. a snowstorm, fed by lake erie, has already dumped five feet of area. four people are dead. snow drifts are massive. and in many neighborhoods, there's simply no place for plows to *put the snow... so it has to be carried away by dump trucks. even worse... the buffalo area expects another two feet of

snow later this week. it took 90 seconds for thieves to smash their car into the louis vuitton store in northbrook...and take off with a stash of merchandise. louis vuitton in oakbrook was hit in a similar-style robbery in september. in that case, thieves stole 120-thousand dollars of merchandise. an inventory has not been taken in the northbrook robbery yet. the thieves left a gray 2009 toyota camry behind. blase cupich took over as the leader of the country's third largest archdiocese yesterday amid a packed house at holy name cathedral. >> i resolved to serve the spiritual needs of this church. >> banks be to god. >>he is now the ninth archbishop of chicago -- following in the footsteps of cardinal francis george, who has served for the last 17 years. cupich delivered the homily during an elaborate mass that

lasted more than two hours. he used some humor but also addressed some serious issues, including the priest sex abuse scandal. >> working to protect children, to bring healing to victims and to build that trust that has been shattered by our failures is our sacred duty. >>cupich encourage the faithful to leave their comfort zones and strive to make a difference. the 77-year-old cardinal george is now the first archbishop of chicago to retire. you were probably with us as we follow the story yesterday,the small plane that crashed into a home near midway airport was finally pulled out of that home. the plane had just left midway, when pilot eric howlett radioed that he had an emergency. his plane wound up hitting the front of a house at 65-th and knox. it missed the elderly couple sleeping inside by just eight inches. they made it out o-k, but howlett was killed. the plane's tail wedged against the roof of the house next door.

>> it will be secured overnight and more morning we will begin the detailed examination of the frame and the engines and propellers. >>howlett was a commercial pilot and flight instructor. n-t-s-b investigators will look at a couple of things. for starters...the purity of the fuel that his plane received at midway. also...the effect of the cold weather, and the amount of weight the plane was carrying. the lincoln park building that once housed the mulligan school was a candidate for landmark status. now, it's a candidate for demolition, after fire gutted the place. the 114-year-old building, at sheffield and willow, was several months into a redevelopment project. the developer had to hire guard dogs, because people frequently broke in and vandalized the place. no one was injured in yesterday's fire. the cause is still unknown. we are getting our first look at surveillance video of a deadly police shooting that took place earlier this month inside a hospital in highland park. the video shows the deadly confrontation between police and christopher anderson.

he was in the emergency room of northshore highland park hospital on november 3rd after he and his daughter were injured in a crash. anderson pulled a gun after he reportedly became upset with the care they were getting. officers are heard telling him to drop the gun several times and then they fired nine shots in less than two seconds - killing anderson. prosecutors have ruled that the shooting was justified. the co-owner of an indiana business has turned himself in to police, to face charges of murdering his partner. prosecutors say thomas smith killed and dismembered david krawczenia earlier this month, and stuffed the victim's body in a car trunk, with its head and arms cut off. investigators believe smith owed the victim money. krawczenia was last seen, on his way to a meeting to talk about that debt. two weeks after election day... democratic candidate mike frerichs... is poised to be illinois' next treasurer. the race has been too close to call ever since election night, with republican tom cross generally holding a slim lead. but that changed yesterday, when veteran poll watchers say the democrat surged forward, to take an approximately 3 thousand vote lead over cross. the vote won't be certified until the end of the month.

but with the race this close... it could lead to the first recount request in 3 decades. mayor rahm emanuel's re- election campaign will run its first t-v ad today. the commercial features a pilsen community activist praising the mayor for closing two coal plants. >> i think he comes as a lot of these issues ready to have a tough conversation. if everything to do is to shut them down then that's what he's going to do. >>the coal plants mentioned in the ad were run by a company that was struggling financially, according to the chicago tribune. emanuel's ad is out before his two major challengers, bob fioretti and jesus garcia, even filed the paperwork to get on the ballot. the election is february 24-th. a special delivery in pennsylvania. brandon and aimee terry knew their great dane "snowy" was pregnant. what they didn't know was she was carrying a litter of *19 puppies! she gave birth to one in the yard, 6 in the terry's

israel's prime minister is calling for a "battle for jerusalem," after two palestinian men murdered four rabbis and a policeman at a synagogue in the holy city. the killers used guns and meat cleavers. their murderous rampage ended, only when police gunned them down. three of the rabbis were americans. the president of the palestinian authority condemned the attacks. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says, the israelis will not be driven from jerusalem. the grand jury ruling in the michael brown shooting is not out yet, but protest groups are preparing for any outcome. local prosecutors suggested the grand jury will decide whether to indict ferguson police officer darren wilson this month. the f-b-i warns the decision could be exploited by extremist protesters who plan to riot or damage property. protest groups are also stocking up and staying connected through social media. some even have registries for supporters to buy them supplies like surgical masks, cameras, and goggles. another stumbling block on the

keystone oil pipeline. the bill failed in the senate. the bill fell just one vote short of the 60 needed to get it to president obama's desk. the measure cleared the house. the pipeline would transport more than 800-thousand barrels of oil a day from canada to the gulf of mexico. supporters said it would create jobs and reduce energy dependence, while opponents were concerned about its impact on the environment. the bill is expected to come up again next year, when republicans take control of the senate. the national security agency will get to keep collecting bulk data from phone calls by private citizens, thanks to a vote of a senate. a bill to *limit n-s-a snooping, couldn't get enough votes to cut off senate debate. republican opponents say, with groups like "isis" on the prowl, the government's surveillance power is more vital than ever. three chicago aldermen are calling for an investigation into what they say is "pay-to- play politics" involving the city's mayoral election. aldermen bob fioretti, scott waguespack and john arena cite a published report that since 2011, mayor emanuel has accepted 600 thousand dollars in campaign contributions from financial firms that manage city

pension funds. they have asked the securities and exchange commission, the city's inspector general and the board of ethics to investigate the donations. fioretti says he plans to run chicago is not for sale. we are demanding a full investigation in disgorgement to the funds that were given to the mayor's campaign. >> he says he plans to run against mayor emanuel in the spring. an emanuel spokesman says the contributions are legal and that the mayor has stiffened the ethics and contributions rules since he's been in office. state lawmakers could impose tougher rules on ride-sharing companies, while the city of chicago issues licenses to two of them. in august, governor quinn vetoed bills that set stricter standards and allowed insurance companies to deny coverage. legislators may try to override those vetoes this week. supporters of the bills say ride-share drivers should have the same insurance responsibilities that taxi

extent list. there was an arbitrator to oversee the appeal. >> the big day for stocks on tuesday the dow jumped 40 points. nasdaq surged 31. federal regulators are pushing for a nationwide recall of defective airbags made by takata. the airbags reportedly explode too easily, with too much force. they can be found in several kinds of cars including b-m-w, chrysler, ford and honda. the recalls are taking place in specific areas depending on the carmaker.. however, the carmaker will replace airbags in other areas if the customer is concerned. yesterday we told you about the most expensive universities.... but is college is even worth the cost? the average cost of a 4-year- degree was 67-thousand in 20- 13. the amount of financial student aid neared *219-billion last year, with students borrowing an average of 26-thousand dollars.
