snow hits chicago ahead of the thanksgiving holiday and this time it looks like it's sticking. high winds along with the snow are forcing delays at the airports. good afternoon. i'm steve sanders. and i'm dina bair. we welcome our viewers who are watching us around the country on wgn america and on the web. live in the loop with more on our top story. when i left home this morning it was 54 degrees. it is now around 32 degrees here in the loop according to my if own thermometer. it is that the transition point here where we saw

the sprinkling rain earlier today. kind of a steady drizzle. the changeover to snow. now we're beginning to see just a tiny bit of accumulation. cars and automobile windshields. we are beginning to see a little bit of snow piling up. it is just accumulating. it has been a steady wind this morning. it has been clipping all this with around. people who left home this morning thinking they were preparing for a rainy day are now having to deal with kind of a snowy day. as a make that transition from rain and snow. it is one of those days that we have to prepare for everything here in chicago you concede that we are showing some of the people of them

walking bias this morning have their umbrellas up free there's been a stiff wind that has made it tough for people to be able to maintain those umbrellas. will have to see where it goes. was saying earlier that this transition might maintain itself for a while before get a steady amount of snowfall in the loop. just enough to slow down the traffic and make it rough to get around. hopefully by rush hour maybe it will have improved in this area. we will throw it back to you. this weather is causing problems for air travel since some flights at o'hare were delayed up to 30 minutes this morning. at least a dozen flights are backed up by about 40 minutes. it is always a good idea to check with your airline before you go to the airport.

sentencing day, for for a top lieutenant in mexico's sinaloa drug cartel. alfredo vasquez was the cartel's point man for a trafficking operation that picked up cocaine from south america. flew it to mexico in a fleet of 747's then trucked it up to chicago, where it was distributed to cities like new york, washington and cincinnati. in a plea for leniency, vasquez said his greatest fear is dying in prison before he can be reunited with his family. >> 15 year-old was shot while standing with classmates. prosecutors say shortly after the shooting her accused killer stopped nearby to pick up to france. >> install them about the shooting. allegedly got angry and told williams to stop talking. prosecutors said they plan to use the silence as in the commission of his guilt. the hearing has been scheduled for december 8th. >>

>> a big fire killed 32 horses in a stable in northwest suburban woodstock. it happened in the 51-hundred block of mount thabor road saturday night. a person who runs the stable says a "crackling sound" coming from the stable woke him up. fire departments from 27 areas were called to put out that fire. >> most people have a kitchen room. we have a kitchen in the living room in the barn. >> losses in the fire including the horses are estimated to be more than a million dollars. >>chicago's new archbishop made three visits yesterday, and delivered his first homily as

archbishop. blase cupich chose saint agatha catholic church on the west side, where former priest daniel mc-cormack sexually abused at least five boys. cupich apologized for the pain mc- cormack inflicted, and offered to meet with the abuse victims and their families. the man named by pope francis to prosecute priests accused of sexual abuse is himself accused of covering up priest abuse. including cases here in chicago. father donald mcguire was accused of molesting minors in the 19-90's. according to the "boston globe" father rober geisinger was the second-highest ranking official among the chicago jesuits at that time and failed to report the allegations to police. mcguire was transferred to another church but was convicted in 2006 of molesting two boys in wisconsin. today is the deadline to file nominating petitions for next february's mayoral election. candidates expected to submit petitions today include. dr. amara enyia. dr. willie wilson. cook county commissioner jesus garcia. and alderman bob fioretti.

while the department investigates the fatal shooting of a 12-year-old boy. police responded saturday to a report of a man pointing a gun at people in a park. the man who called 9-1-1 told dispatchers that the gun was probably fake. the police union says the officers were never told that the gun might not be real. police say the boy did not point a weapon at the officers or threaten them. but tamir rice did reach for what turned out to be a large b-b or pellet- type replica gun resembling a semi- automatic pistol. rice died of his wounds yesterday morning. among the representatives meeting in austria. the group is working to close serious gaps needed to reach a deal. the new deadline for a political framework agreement has been set for march 1st. the deadline for final agreement is now july 1st. >>two soldiers from the u-s-led

military coalition in afghanistan were killed when their vehicle was hit by a bomb. the coalition has given no details about today's bombing in the capital city of kabul. but sources say the victims were americans.. and that at least three civilians were also killed. the attack comes one day after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives vest at a volleyball match. killing 45 people. so far, there's been no claim of responsibility. to report >> in rolling stone magazine alleged sexual assault in 2012 involving seven men and clear pressure urging the victim not to report. released a statement thursday saying there were horrified and disgusted by the allegations in the article. the fraternity at the heart of the allegations called the actions of vital. temperatures could reach the 60s today around buffalo york. with up to 7 ft. of snow they're bracing for
