opening on the holidays for 23 years. if we said it wants, we said it a million times, this is typically the biggest shopping weekend of the year. on land deals, preached black friday sales and of course the traditional deals. according to the national retail federation, 25 million people are expected to shop on thanksgiving which is why opening on the holiday has become a popular strategy among major retailers in recent years. kmart is not the only store open on thanksgiving morning. there will be some open letter this evening. i should tell you their radio shack, the lots, dollar general, family dollar, just a few of the ones we know will be open for thanksgiving. live on the city's north side. back to you. >> a winter storm is snarling travel to and from the east coast during one of

the busiest travel times of the year. triple-a says more than 46- travel between now and sunday, with more than 89- percent of those being by car. in all, one-point-9 million people are expected to fly through o-hare and midway airports this long holiday weekend. sunday is expected to be the busiest day at o-hare, with a quarter of a million people coming and going on that day alone. more than 7-hundred flights into and around the united states were canceled yesterday, because of storms on the east coast. and, more than 4-thousand flights were delayed. the nor'easter that formed over the gulf of mexico brought rain to cities, including new york and boston. higher elevations in new england got about a foot of snow. it's much worst in parts of virginia, west virginia, pennsylvania and maryland ... where more than six inches of snow fell yesterday. new overnight: a driver was injured overnight in a rollover crash in south suburban blue island. it happened at 12-30 this

morning, at 127th and winchester. the vehicle was upside down and pinned against a median. >> we don't really know what happened but that's only thing we could find at this time. >>the driver was taken to the hospital in fair condition. chicago police are working to determine if a bold smash-and-grab robbery on the west side is linked to several others in the suburbs. here's the surveillance video that shows a mini-van crashed through the front of "cisco n-y-c" early yesterday morning. four people then jump out of the van, while at least 16 more came running in from the street while carrying garbage bags. they were only inside for two minutes, but managed to get away with hundreds of thousands of dollars in clothing. >> the come over here not to get money, but they come here with guns to get some expensive genes and some close. >> this is like a low-tech way they can get as much as they can. >>there have been five similar late-night robberies in the city and suburbs since early september. in each of them, a vehicle intentionally crashed into

the store ... then, numerous people stole merchandise. the family of a ten year old boy, who died in an apartment fire, is suing the owner of the building. ans khan died in his third floor apartment, on the 57- hundred block of north kimball, about three weeks ago. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. the khan family is suing the building owner for not providing working smoke detectors. khan's parents remain hospitalized after they saved their other two children from the fire. >> it is sad. >>the owner of the building tells the chicago tribune that every unit had a smoke detector that he installed and routinely checked. the khans' attorney says the building has had six smoke detector violations in the past decade. it was a quiet night in ferguson, two days after the grand jury announcement to not bring charges against the officer who shot michael brown.

a few dozen protesters were still outside police headquarters last night. they were being watched by national guard members who were stationed outside. but there were no confrontations. before the riots started monday night, brown's father was seen telling the crowd to burn ferguson down. brown's mother says he's not responsible for what happened afterwards. >> his emotions took over him. he spoke out of anger. it's one thing to speak and a different thing to act. he did not act. he just spoke out of anger. >>darren wilson is still in talks to leave the ferguson police department. the federal government still has an open investigation. the brown family has not ruled out a wrongful death lawsuit. police arrested three people during the ferguson protest in chicago. richard newburger is charged with one count of felony aggravated battery to a police officer. he was part of a small group that entered the intersection of jackson and state street, with a banner.two others were charged with misdemeanors. it's the most famous presidential pardon of the

survivor can be difficult. who could understand the terrific experience? one woman learned a lesson in forgiveness the could be helpful for anyone living in fear or anger or resentment. >> he was 20 when the nazis invaded poland. one night, two men came to his house and executed his family. he watched, hiding. >> my father witnessed them being butchered to death. from that time my father ran into the woods into the forest of eastern europe. he never looked back. >> to kill germans and poles whenever he could. he had to ensure he would survive. >> he escaped and survived the holocaust when so many of his loved ones did not. he found a passport and assumed the young man's identity. he emigrated to

she promised she would do all our shopping for us today. and she's laughing. >> good luck with about one. the store opens at 6:00 a.m.. about one-and-a-half hours before the store opens. here are some employees are arriving. no customers. a much different story than last year. nothing new for kmart, they have been open on thanksgiving for the past 23 years. last year i covered this story and people were lining up as early as 3:00 a.m.. more and more companies are starting to follow and that has created something of a backlash with critics that include employees and customers complaining about stores being open on a holiday or people should be spending time with their family. but the stores say their only following the wishes of their customers. it's hard to argue with the numbers. national federal retail association says 25 million people are expected to shop on thanksgiving. and kmart

is not alone in the opening on thanksgiving morning. several other stores will open later this morning, real shaq will open at 8:00. other stores included lots, dollar general, family dollar and more. we will have our eye on that and bring it to coming up. for now, i'm live on the north side. back to you. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. the third night of protests in ferguson went peacefully. there were smaller demonstrations, and no violence. michael brown's parents say they don't believe their son taunted or challenged officer darren wilson before the shooting. wilson is still in talks to leave the ferguson police department. video was released that shows the deadly police shooting of twelve year old tamir rice. the video shows rice pointing a gun at people, at a park in cleveland. responding officers didn't realize it was a pellet gun until after the shooting. the person who called 9-1-1 reported the gun could have been fake, but the dispatcher didn't tell

officers that. wrigley field's new bleachers might not be done in time for opening day. the installation of a new water main is slowing down construction. the unseasonably cold weather is also playing a role. the cubs say they may have to put bleacher season ticket holders into the grandstands for part of april. opening day is april 5-th. chicago's winter parking bans go into effect monday... december-1st... through march 31-st. snow or no snow... you will be towed if you're parked in a prohibited route from 3-am until 7-a-m. a seperate ban goes into effect only when there are 2 inches of snow... regardless of time or date. governor quinn pardoned 126 people ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. one of them is robert taylor of the "dixmoor five". they were a group of teens who were wrongfully convicted and served prison time for the 1991 rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl. quinn also denied 185 clemency petitions as he continues to go through a backlog of more than 25- hundred cases, in his final days in office.

on the eve of thanksgiving, archbishop blase cupich praised president obama's decision to unilaterally grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. and he said, those who came to america without papers, or overstayed their visas, share the same dream as their predecessors who came here legally. >> become with the same aspirations that your parents and grandparents and ancestors did. as i said in my installation homily, that aspiration, to want to do better for their families is planted by god. >>cupich says, while the new amnesty is a good start, america's entire immigration system needs to be fixed. high-fat food can erase your memory. that's the claim of a new medical study. researchers in san diego asked a thousand healthy adults to describe their diet -- specifically their intake of trans fats. then they were given a memory test.

thanks today, to his brother for giving him a second chance at life. 73-year-old jesse aguilar found out last year that both of his kidneys were failing.

he has been on dialysis since, waiting for a kidney donation. that came through this week, when his younger brother steve gave aguilar one of his. they were a match, even though the two men have a different father. >> i'm doing fine now. thanks to my brother. >> is giving him a kidney would make him live longer, there's no doubt in my mind that's what i want. i already lost one i don't want to lose another. >>aguilar says he knows he isn't out of the woods yet. there's always the chance of infection, or the donated kidney will be rejected by his body. the first human tests of the new experimental ebola vaccine have been declared "promising." 20 volunteers were given the vaccine in september. according to the national institutes of health, all 20 developed the antibodies they needed to fight ebola... and about half developed *immune cells. and there were no serious side effects. doctors warn, the vaccine is still months away from widespread field testing. thanksgiving weekend is traditionally when the
