protests in new york and around the country after the grand jury decision not to charge a police officer after he killed an unarmed man by placing him in a chokehold. more than 20 dozen homes remain with out heat this morning as crews work to repair a broke gas line. and fast food workers hit the picket lines again today....to try and raise the minimum wage. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm lourdes duarte. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m.* demetrius ivory has a check of our weather. good morning, demetrius. it doesn't feel that that out. >> not too bad. >> you are right, normal

like the one before. mid- 30s-low '40's. fairly nice. >> you want to start with an update our official accident from overnight. still doing an investigation. we have a map of this one at avenue 0 which is still closed at 120. this happened in the south area and investigators remained on the scene. there will be the tourist until they are finished. we are watching and infrastructure improvement downtown major project that has all sorts of delays alarmed lasalle and washington. you can get through although it is a tricky with some of the closures and the planned reductions. we're getting closer to seeing this finely finished. more traffic in just a bit. >>more protests are expected today, in reaction to another grand jury's decision to not indict a police officer in the death of an unarmed man.

this case involves a new york city officer -- and it was all caught on video. mary moloney has more. >> protesters stand in salad solidarity, hands up. this peaceful stance is in direct contrast to a violent death. in july, police confronted the man who they say illegally sold cigarettes. video captures what would be his final moments. >> i can brief. >> the plain clothes officer put him in a choke hold while others hold him down. hand on his head and chest. he passes out. later pronounced dead. medical examiner ruled it a homicide. but a grand jury determined hit the officer who put him in the told should not face charges. >> why? >> the officer suggested to this. in part of my intention to harm anyone and i feel bad about the death of mr. garner. not good enough for his widow.

>> hell no! the time for remorse was when my husband was yelling he could not read. that was the time to show remorse. >> his wife is not the only one upset. protesters took to the streets. last week, a different grand jury made a similar decision, a white police officer will not face charges for killing a black teenager, michael brown. riots and looting followed. but in new york, a new message. and a different way to get that message across. peacefully. >>the protests over the grand jury's decision were all over the country. that included this one in chicago. >>a small group held up signs and protested at

state street and jackson boulevard. they say there have been too many instances where a police officer kills a black person and is not charged with a crime. new overnight... a paul stuart men's clothing store in the loop has been burglarized for the second time in less than two months. alarms sounded at the store at 208 south lasalle just after two o'clock this morning. a revolving door was smashed... a hammer still laying on the floor inside. police say thieves were seen running to a getaway car. in a similar robbery on october 15th, more than 10- thousand dollars worth of merchandise was taken. also new overnight: a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in the austin neighborhood. it happened on the 600 block of north mayfield. the teen was standing on the sidewalk, when the offender exited a van and shot him in the head. police responded to 9-1-1 calls and saw a dark s-u-v fleeing the area of the shooting. a police chase began, ending when the vehicle crashed into a pole. three suspects were taken into custody.

the smell of natural gas will once again fill a neighborhood on the south side this morning. that's because people's gas crews will be working to repair a broken gas line and other damage from a house explosion. the line was apparently ruptured by construction people in the 21-hundred block of 107-th place. gas was shut off to about 90 neighboring homes as a precaution. overnight. >> it's cold and it's the most difficult part of the day. i had to make two calls to find out what was going on and what they're going to do. it is cold in our house. >>about 30 homes still need to be reconnected. people's gas crews worked through the night. around 9-am, people in the beverly and morgan park areas can expect to smell more natural gas until everything is sealed, and it's safe to turn the gas back on. just two days after the chicago city council approved a higher minimum wage, another wage *protest is getting underway this morning. it's a walkout, on behalf of fast food workers. patrick elwood is live at the rock-and-roll mc- donald's.

>> good morning. they to say that it's a step in the right direction. a call for action at this flagship chicago mcdonald's. other fast food restaurant across the town and at 159 other cities taking place today some of the organizers are here getting underway in about 15 minutes. this is a group calling themselves fight for 15. the second year for this, a union driven event, for fast-food workers who walked off the job to protest low hourly wages. also coming amid developments over the last few days by the mayor to raise the city's minimum wage up to $15 over a period of several years. the state assembly could back similar measures soon but that's not to said they're not opponents. there are. but plenty of them. including this man who owns

a small business he. to voice concern saying the wage increase could put him out of business. >> a dramatic increase, the first ratchet is 21% that potentially it is a significant impact on the cross to culture. we will have to increase prices on who we buy from and then my overhead increases. this is a potential significant obstacle. >> that said, desperate workers got an early start walking off the job. this is from a wendy's in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. many employees walked off the job. there is an organized social media campaign as part of the effort. infusing but #strike fast food >> purchasers are arriving by bus. they are set to pick

off-kickoff things at 4:30 a.m.. we will be here. reporting from downtown. back to. >> it is picking up steam. the the illinois house took the first step toward regulating the ride-sharing industry. companies like uber and lyft are posing stiff competition to the already- regulated taxicab industry. a new bill, worked out in cooperation with the ride- sharing companies, would require background checks for ride-sharing drivers, and impose minimum insurance requirements on those companies. now that the house has approved it, the bill is on its way to the state senate. and lawmakers approved a bill making same-day voter registration a permanent fixture in illinois. a pilot program that gave voters that advantage resulted in long lines on election day. some voting centers were so crowded that voters were casting ballots until 3 a-m, after many races had already been called. legislative leaders say adjustments are needed before the law takes effect in 20-16. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas at the white house.

volunteers have decorated the mansion with 26 trees, including the official white house tree which stands 18- feet tall. there's even robotic versions of the first family's dogs sunny and bo. the decorations also pay tribute to members of the military. and if anyone gets hungry, there's a 300-pound gingerbread house, although any turkey who eats that may end up needing a presidential pardon. >> so much per hour poinsettias. the make us look bad. >> who can top this? this looks really good. >> i like it. >> somebody went out and blew the budget on that. pretty good. let's take a look at our day. 28 degrees in chicago dalton rates at 28. calumet city at 28. soldier field read at 20. what we are expecting is temperatures to be up and down. early this morning we are dry. looking at the

the prospects look grim, for the black texas and 16 other states are suing to block obama supporters on the immigration lawsuit filed by the attack attorney-general and governor elect. president from protecting as many as five million undocumented immigrants from deportation. the suit claims the president has over-stepped his legal authority. the white house is confident that's not the case. the president has said he'd rather congress pass a comprehensive reform plan. hundreds rallied outside

the supreme court yesterday-- as justices heard arguments in a case that could affect millions of pregnant women nationwide. worker who says ups discriminated against her because she was pregnant. peggy young was a ups driver in 2006 when she got pregnant. she asked for light duty so she wouldn't have to lift heavy packages. but the company said no and put her on unpaid leave. and >> i want crinoline and not have to choose between the life of their unborn child and working. we are still providers. ups denies any wrongdoing, but now offers light duty to pregnant employees. the justices are expected to rule by next june. a "shopping mall santa" delivered a gift to a neighbor.. by saving his life. john norris portrays santa at a mall near sterling, illinois. he says he woke up to a fire alarm at his apartment building tuesday morning. that's when he got his neighbor who was trapped behind smoke and clutter. >> of the distance was only

the centers for disease control says a little more than half of the flu virus samples tested this fall are different from the strains included in this year's shots. but the c-d-c still recommends getting vaccinated, because it can reduce the severity of cases from other strains. a panel of doctors decides which strains to put in the serum based on the previous year's most common versions. physicians are speaking out about how often women should visit the gynecologist. i got stuck with this one. while many women believe they need to go once a year to get a pap smear, new technology has made ityears between pap smears. this *doesn't* mean you shouldn't make that annual visit. the wellness check up is about checking for other health issues as well. the countdown to nasa's next giant leap into space has begun... a live look here at the launch pad in cape canaveral where in less then two

another one-day fast food strike begins this morning, two days after the chicago city council voted to raise the city's minimum wage. fast food workers say it's not enough. patrick elwood is live at the rock and roll mc- donald's. patrick? >> good morning. news happening as we speak, this is what's happening today, a call for action at this mcdonald's at ontario and clark. other fast food restaurants and apparently 159 other cities across the nation, the call themselves the fight for 15. they are out in numbers. second year for this event. a union driven event, protesting lower hourly wages. this comes amid developments here from the last few days by the mayor to raise the city's minimum-wage up to

major cities. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. al qaeda fighters are threatening to kill an american hostage. al qaeda in the arabian peninsula released a video showing luke somers, who was taken hostage in september. american commandos tried to rescue him last week, but he was moved. on the video, an al qaeda fighter threatens to kill somers if washington does not meet their demands. the united states and iran find themselves with a common enemy in iraq. fighter jets for both countries are attacking "isis" targets in anbar officials blame below zero tablatures for the delay in the work. this is that sir mac and wabash. the 146 station. >> a time to give to some of

your favorite charitable groups. this year one group, the help families cope with the loss of a newborn child is struggling to figure out how they will stay afloat after they were dropped from their event. take a look. >> wacky and lively for a good cause. the reason thousands turned out. >> we founded the project in 2007. >> a tough time when they lost their newborn baby. she died. so she and her husband wanted a way to help families who were going through the same thing. >> nobody wants to talk about the death of a child. it's uncomfortable which is unfortunate because that isolates the parents and family. >> decreed a program to help with counseling and screening keepsakes. so had needed that children's hospital was behind it all the way. the first year, a 5 k, the marquee event was slow to get off the ground.

>> this is a ground up story. we started this from nothing. >> it improved from their from 100 runners-200 they have some sponsors but not until guaranteed rate showed up that things really got moving. >> they picked it up when we went to the kickoff meeting and they basically said let's do something fun. >> and no-brainer. why not. they wanted to become the sole sponsor and donate $2,500 to start. also wanted to name the race the 5 k. this co-. they agreed and it became a marketing hit. but all that fun came to an end to this past year when it guaranteed rate pulled out. >> they decided the disco- was going to fund a

foundation that they founded. i said you left us in an extremely vulnerable position. i said you asked for exclusivity to be our sole sponsorship we turned away other sponsors. >> so now they have to start from scratch. the race they kicked off is no longer their own. >> i won't let this foundation fold. >> an attorney who works with not-for-profit organizations across the city, in illinois in more than 30,000. he had one major piece of advice. >> of the organization should have its own but if they don't they should ask for a corporate sponsor to make sure everything is in writing. >> at this case they're not doing anything wrong there was never a signed agreement that specify the length of the partnership. guaranteed a great is funding their own not-for-profit but it leaves the project in a

tough spot. losing their event with no funds or sponsors to start over. >> it's not about what happened, it's about how it happened. and if we had some warning for some notice or even some financing to meet our commitment that we had established, that would have been fine. >> we did reach out to guaranteed rate they didn't talk on camera but they did send out a statement saying they created the concept, funded and served as a host of this disco-race since the beginning. all the people of the project received proceeds from 2011-2013, last winter we changed the beneficiary to our own charitable arm, the guaranteed rate foundation. not clear right now is that the ipod project will continue. in the sponsor could really help get them back up and running. >> the busy holiday shopping
