an off-duty chicago police sergeant shot and killed a man, who shot a customer at a bar on the southwest side. it happened at 6-30 last night, inside the "blackthorn pub" on 111th street in the mount greenwood neighborhood. police say two men got into a fight. then, one man pulled out a gun and shot the other man. the sergeant saw it happen, then pulled out his own gun and announced that he is an officer. >> he ordered him to put his weapon down. he took his weapon out and the individual began to bring his weapon through the bar so he fired his shot. his weapon strip the individual. >>the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene. his name has not been released. the man he shot was taken to the hospital in critical condition. the officer was not injured. a federal drug enforcement agent was struck and injured by a runaway driver in the ashburn neighborhood. police made a traffic stop at 82-nd and kedzie, on a tip that a man was transporting cocaine. but when officers tried to arrest the man, he drove off, and hit the d-e-a agent, then two other vehicles. the agent tried to *shoot

a typhoon that struck the philippines has killed at least 21 people. red cross officials say 18 of those died on the eastern island of samar, where typhoon hagupit made landfall on saturday. the typhoon has weakened into a tropical storm, and is still travelling westward across the philippines. it caused far less damage than feared. thousands of people are heading home after about a million people evacuated vulnerable areas. the concerns now are flash

flooding and landslides. three people were killed in an accident that involved several vehicles and a black bear. it started when a car struck and killed a bear in the florida everglades last night. that car was pulled over, when a second car stopped at the scene. three people got out of the second car and were all hit and killed by a third vehicle. five other people were also injured. the woman who hit the bear was not hurt. rolling stone magazine has apologized for a phony rape story at the university of virginia. the magazine accepted the accusation of a student who claimed she was gang-raped at a fraternity party. they agreed to her demand that reporters not speak to the men she accused, to get *their side of the story. now, the woman's story is falling apart... and "rolling stone" says it unfairly criticized the university for failing to *respond to the alleged rape. for the record, the fraternity says there was no party on the night the woman cried rape.

sunday marked 73 years since the attack on pearl harbor. more than a dozen survivors returned to hawaii for a memorial. 24-hundred servicemen were killed when japanese bombers attacked in the early morning of december 7- th, 1941. another one-thousand people were wounded. more than half of the u-s pacific fleet was destroyed and eight battleships were damaged. the u-s responded by joining the fight in world war two. a cartoon has come to life in the city of reading. at first the christmas tree in downtown pennsylvania called the tree pathetic and ugly. officials were supposed to take the tree down... but residents decided to embrace it. one red ornament was put up in a local ceremony... reminiscent of the holiday classic "a charlie brown christmas." now, the city has become a holiday destination full of christmas cheer.. officials say tourism will help the city, identified as one of the poorest in the country.

>> and vandalism in berkeley, california. it started as a peaceful protest over the police encounter in new york that left eric garner dead, and the refusal of a grand jury to indict an officer who put garner into a forbidden chokehold. the berkeley protests turned violent and destructive when people threw rocks and fireworks at the police... others smashed store windows... still others blocked freeways. several people have been arrested. there was another n-f-l protest, related to the death of michael brown in missouri. when redskins defensive lineman chris baker sacked rams quarterback shaun hill, he celebrated by making the "hands up don't shoot" gesture. he also posted about the gesture on instagram, and wrote about it on his twitter account. in new york, a few hundred protesters gathered at grand central station and sang what they called "justice carols." then they marched to macy's and a toys-r-us store, whey they staged a die-in, to protest the eric garner decision.
