be a severe flu season and the situation here is proof of that. school ended early yesterday and koses will not resume until thursday. that is because of one fourth of the 730 students here are suffering from the flu along with a significant number of staff and building workers. administrators decided to shut everything down to limit exposure and allowing recovery time even though final exams are scheduled for next week. just last week there were some debris in the state championship football team at a special pet rally but now members of that team along with 200 kids are out with the flu. will will undergo a from disinfecting during the shutdown. state health officials say there has been a spike in flu cases in recent days throughout illinois. and the outbreak may worsen since the cdc

says this year's flu vaccine is less effective against a particular strain but doctors say it's not too late to get a flu shot since the season can stretch into march and some protection is better than the protection. live in the public range park. back to you. >> a memorial service will be held this morning for the loyola university student who was shot to death during an attempted robbery. friends and family of 23- year-old mutahir rauf will gather at loyola's lakeshore campus for the memorial service at ten, this morning. rauf was shot while walking with his brother near albion and lakewood avenues, friday night. they were approached by two men and ordered to hand over their money. a gun went off in the scuffle. police are looking for the attackers. protests over eric garner's death in new york, continue to disrupt people's lives across the country. in berkeley, california, marchers once again spilled out onto interstate 80, blocking traffic, to protest a grand jury decision not to file

criminal charges against the police officer who put garner into a forbidden chokehold. police arrested some protesters and chased away others. the overnight protest has *not been marked by the looting and property damage of the previous night. in boulder, colorado, part of interstate 36 was blocked because of a protest over eric garner's death, and also the death of michael brown in missouri. dozens of marchers gathered on a street corner late yesterday afternoon near the university of colorado, and marched to the expressway. there are no reports of violence in boulder. in new york, a big crowd gathered outside brooklyn's barclays center, protesting eric garner's death. the demonstrators chanted "black lives matter," as prince william and kate middleton arrived at the nets' game. inside, players for the nets and the cleveland cavaliers wore t-shirts that said "i can't breathe" -- garner's last words. derrick rose let his thoughts be known, simply by wearing a t-shirt over the weekend. rose wore a shirt that read "i can't breathe" before saturday's game. those were the last words of eric garner.

rose says he usually doesn't speak out about social issues, but he wanted to show his support for what happened. rose says he has seen police brutality as a kid in englewood, but he never experienced it himself. >> when you live in an area like that the kids you a reason to be bad. my biggest concern is for the kids. making sure that my son grows up in a safe environment. >> rose says he's had the support of his teammates, and he has received no negative feedback from the bulls or the n-b-a. stars like lebron james and kevin garnett are following rose's lead by wearing similar shirts before games. chicago police officers are not taught the kind of chokehold the police used on eric garner in new york. and city alderman ed burke -- himself a former police officer -- wants to take it a step further by enacting a law *forbidding the police from using the chokehold. burke says things were different when *he patrolled the streets. >> we were taught how to choke people until they lose consciousness. we were

taught at the time to use our night stick to choke the person. >> the police department says it now teaches its officers that any submission hold must permit a suspect to breathe. alderman burke's proposal would bar *any peace officer within the city limits from using any chokehold while trying to subdue someone. the alderman hopes to get the full city council to enact the new law, as early as tomorrow. a second suspect has been arrested and charged in sexual assaults on two women on halloween. 26-year-old brian ventura of plainfield is charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault. surveillance cameras caught images of the suspects after the women were attacked on the near west side. police arrested greg bogacz two weeks after the attacks. the woman who claimed she was stabbed on a jogging path in palatine, has been charged with disorderly conduct.. after police determined she made it all up. veronica klicka reported that a man stabbed her, november 29th, in the deer grove forest preserve.

authorities believe the stab wound was self-inflicted. they say she was under court supervision and wasn't allowed to have weapons. a brazen thief is caught on camera stealing packages from the lobby of a condo in lincoln park. it happened near the depaul campus on saturday, at a bissell and webster. the thief opens the front gate, then walks right into the building. he starts stuffing the packages into his bag, even taking the time to cut one of them open. it all happened in front of a security camera that's in plain sight. >> he get mad because somebody walks in the like they live here. not even like it or creeping around the bushes i came home a few minutes after him i am really glad i didn't run into him i would have asked what he was doing and knowing now that he had a knife, that is pretty scary. >> the man made off with a copies of an oprah self-help book. amazon has agreed to replace them all at no cost to the women. police are looking for the man in this video. the chicago police

department has a new interactive website where people can now report crimes. "chicago police dot-org" allows users to report non- urgent matters, such as criminal damage to property, thefts and simple assaults. there is also a way to anonymously text information about a crime. the website features surveillance videos, crime statistics and community alerts. superintendent garry mccarthy hopes it will bring police and residents closer together. the deadline is looming to submit proposals for the obama presidential library and museum. two chicago universities are interested. u-i-c recently lobbied mayor emanuel to support building it on the west side. the university of chicago said yesterday that it's collaborating with several chicago-area universities, to strengthen its proposal for the library to be on the south side. mayor emanuel says either one would be good for chicago. submissions are due on thursday. the other finalists are columbia university in new york, and the university of hawaii in honolulu. the first part of the new maggie daley park opens this weekend. you can check out the

out of business in new delhi, india. and now, so have *all unregistered internet-based taxi firms. over the weekend, a driver for uber was accused of sexually assaulting a female passenger. the driver reportedly got his job with uber by forging a letter of reference from a police officer. no background check was performed on him... and there was no effort to verify that his car was registered. only six taxi firms still have permission to operate in new delhi. the number of deaths from a typhoon that hit the philippines has risen. the red cross says 27 people have died, most of them on the eastern island of samar where typhoon hagupit made landfall on saturday. the typhoon was downgraded

to a tropical storm yesterday. it has destroyed nearly one-thousand homes. emergency response teams are still trying to reach the more remote areas. six people were killed in the crash of a small plane in gaithersburg, maryland. now, we learn, one of them was a corporate c-e-o. michael rosenberg was the founder of "health decisions," in durham, north carolina. yesterday's flight originated in nearby chapel hill. the plane apparently lost power as it approached maryland's montgomery county airport... and crashed into three houses. michael rosenberg was a certified pilot... but it's not known whether he was at the controls. yesterday's massive fire in downtown los angeles, is being investigated as a criminal act. it destroyed part of a large apartment complex. two major freeways were shut down when signs and plastic roadway bumps began to melt. 250 firefighters were on the scene. despite the magnitude of the fire, no injuries were reported. damages are in the multi- millions. a billboard is using the christmas holiday to advertise for atheists. this billboard was put in

*other top stories this morning. a memorial service will be held this morning for the loyola university student who was shot to death during an attempted robbery. friends and family of 23- year-old mutahir rauf will gather at loyola's lakeshore campus for the memorial service at ten. rauf was shot while walking with his brother friday night. police are looking for the attackers. a city council committee has recommended that the city of chicago pay 13 million dollars, to settle two wrongful prosecution lawsuits and a hiring discrimination suit. more than half the money would go to dean cage, who spent 14 years in prison for a 19-94 rape he didn't commit. a city council committee approved a proposal to have e-15 gasoline sold in larger gas stations in chicago. e-15 has 15 percent ethanol. the gas you buy now has up to ten percent. supporters say e-15 is cheaper and better for the environment. but opponents disagree with both claims, saying e-15 can damage some engines. good news for chicago public schools.... the number of students getting college degrees is

on the rise. back in 2006, only 6 percent of students graduated from college. today... 14 percent do. the c-p-s college- graduation rate is also ahead of both new york and baltimore... and isn't far behind the national rate of 18 percent. prince william and his wife kate had a big night in the big apple. the duke and duchess of cambridge attended a party to support wildlife charities, where they met hillary clinton. her daughter chelsea was also there ... she and prince william were overheard congratulating one another on their babies. then, the royal couple went to the brooklyn nets game against the cleveland cavaliers where they met beyonce, jay-z and lebron james. today, the royals plan to visit the 9-eleven memorial museum and attend a charity dinner at the metropolitan museum of modern art. earlier in the day, prince william met president obama in the oval office. the pool reporters and photographers were apparently getting a little too excited, so the white house laid down a few ground rules. the main one ... no selfies were allowed. the news crews apparently obliged, because there weren't any posted to social media.
