breaking news, longtime illinois and politician as the comptroller has died. she passed away just hours ago after suffering a stroke. >> and we are following news of a blockbuster trade as the cubs signed a new pitcher pierre >> and a south african judge rules an acquittal can be appealed. good morning. i'm dan ponce. and i'm lourdes duarte. thanks for joining us on the wgn morning news at *4 a-m.* we have big breaking news. the very well-known politician in chicago. we know her very well covering her for years .

and editor. she went on to have a long history with the illinois republican party. she was once party chairman. she served as state treasurer from 1995 to 2007. she ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2006 -- the first republican woman to win her party's nomination for the state's highest office. she returned to become comptroller in 2010. judy baar topinka was 70. joining us now on the phone is our political analyst paul lisnek. good morning paul. >> obviously this is shocking. >> we were shocked as well. obviously, she was a politician who had widespread respect across the state. >> she was one of those crossovers. illinois is a blue states until the election recently but it wouldn't came to her, all bets were off. while she

was a fiscal conservative, on social issues i would call her liberal. she was pro-choice and pro gay rights and a leader in the effort for same-sex marriage. she appealed not just to moderate and many republicans, but to democrats across the board. one of the reason there was a tough ride against her for that election. her appeal was statewide. >> you have covered her quite often. i wonder if you noticed anything in the month leading up to this point. any talks about her health or any issues that may have given us insight as to what happened? >> i would see her down in springfield on my trips down there. recently she was not at the beach to session. i went to her office. it typically does it all the offices. she was not in springfield. no word about

her health care she just wasn't there. no indications from her staff at that point. in other visits she was always available. she had some problems with her hip so often she was on a cane but always in great spirits. i can remember in the last year of going down she took me into her office because she wanted to show me all these could things she would buy back a rush sales and she was just talking about all the great deals she got the lincoln memorabilia she had in her office. it was around her office. her commercials for the election talked-about how frugal she was and how she was very careful how she spent her money. that's how she was paired with a great sense of humor and a great sense of whimsy. she always knew when it came to the budget she knew what she was talking about and you have to do her job well and she had a very impressive

resume. how will she be remembered most? >> when it got the news the first in a fog of it was indeed her ability to reach across party lines, her appeal to the most liberal democrats in the state. as i had said to sheila and simon about the control race even though it the opponent was well-liked, in order to have hired somebody do you had to fire judy. and in this state, given her crossed party appeal, firing her from any particular office was not something voters wanted to do. three-time treasurer, former head of the gop. she was the republican nominee for governor a few years ago . she didn't win but she always knew what to do. she was somebody who had crossed the appeal and in the state, it's not an easy thing to have. she was able to do it in a big way. >> think everybody remembers

her big personality. thank you so much. i'm sure we will talk to you today and for the coming days. >> thank-you. >> ace pitcher jon lester is coming to the cubs. lester is signing a blockbuster deal worth 155- million dollars over six years. that's just under 26- million dollars a year. lester was also considering offers from his former team the red sox, the world series champion giants, and the dodgers. it's believed that cubs president theo epstein and general manager jed hoyer's ties to boston may have helped their cause. lester is 30 years old and a nine year veteran. he won two world series titles with the red sox, who traded him last season after they couldn't agree on a contract. a court in south africa is hearing the prosecution's appeal of the oscar pistorius verdict. he was found guilty of culpable homicide in october... and was sentenced to five years in prison. prosecutors argue the

olympic "blade runner" should have been convicted of *murdering his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, and faced a longer jail time. police in lake station, indiana are still trying to determine why an elderly man fired a shotgun blast into the air outside city hall... then pointed his gun at the police. when police confronted 84- year-old john laco yesterday morning, he was in his car, with the barrel of the gun pointing out the driver's window. when he got out with the gun, and aimed it, police shot and killed him. >> the initial report is to find out what his intentions were pure it is very sad . >> we are interviewing people try to figure out what the motive was. we don't have a motive right now. >> just ten months ago, lake station firefighters saved john laco's life, when fire gutted his house. he had been living with friends since then. a thief stole a salvation army kettle in oak lawn. it happened last night outside the walgreens on 95th near ridgeland. a salvation army spokeswoman says the bell ringer was on break at the time. she says when the bell ringer returned ... the kettle, stand and money were

learned early this morning that judy bar topinka died from a stroke. she was in moscow yesterday after feeling discomfort and then passed away early this morning. >> here's a look at her career. starting as a journalist after graduating from northwestern university, first elected as a state representative back in 1980. then she went on to

the state senator in 1984 . >> she won the illinois state treasurer office in 1984. she ran for governor in 2006. the first republican woman to be nominated in ill. carriage on the comptroller's office in 2010 i was just reelected for a second term last month we will have much more on her career. also, reaction from those who knew her best. you can also follow us online at wgn tv. more to come. chicago police are investigating a woman's claim that she was raped by an "uber" driver. police aren't saying who, or where, or when. but uber is aware of the accusation. a spokeswoman called the driver's alleged actions appalling and unacceptable. the driver has been released by uber. the company says each of its drivers receives a rigorous background check. chicago police are looking for a man who attempted to kidnap a child in the south austin neighborhood on the west side.

police say the boy was coming out of an alley at lorel and thomas just before three yesterday afternoon, when the man tried to grab him. he told the boy he had candy. the boy kicked the man and ran home. the boy was not hurt. police only have a vague description of the man. allan kustok could receive a life sentence for the murder of his wife. a cook county judge will sentence kustok today. in march, a jury convicted him of killing his wife, orland park four years ago. the defense argued it was suicide. but prosecutors revealed kustok had several affairs and wanted a divorce. requests for a new trial were denied. kustok faces a minimum 45 years in prison. prosecutors have not said what they will seek. a report is criticizing the tactics used by the c-i-a, in order to extract intelligence from detainees. the senate select committee on intelligence revealed the findings of its six year investigation yesterday. it includes a description of how brutal tactics were used against some detainees.

they include sleep deprivation, water boarding, rectal hydration, rectal feedings, ice water baths, and threats of sexual abuse to detainees families. the report also doubts any useful information came from these methods. no committee republicans were part of the study. they are criticizing the findings. >> this particular list shows no purpose other than to in danger americans around the world . >> whatever the report says if it diminishes contributions to our country it is off base here >> named me to another country prepared to stand up and say this was a mistake. >> the report accuses the c- i-a of misleading the white house and congress. c-i-a director john brennan admits the agency made mistakes, but it maintains that the intelligence gained stopped future terrorist attacks. top lawmakers in congress police in wausau, wisconsin saved two men with their super strength... and it was all caught on camera. take a look. officers arrived on the

scene, where two men were stuck under a vehicle. the officers couldn't find a jack to raise the car... but, as you can see in this dash-cam video -- the officers lift the car with their bare hands, freeing the men. investigators say alcohol may have been a factor.. but are still unsure how they got underneath. one man suffered burns from the engine. >> we are looking for winter to begin and we just aren't seen it yet. talking about warm conditions. we are going to warm up even more in the next few days. typically we are in the low 20s. wind of the north right now at 13. we have 29 waukegan, 28 in dekalb. temperatures are close to freezing. on the surface they could be below freezing. we do have potential for ice in some areas. we are watching out for that spirit not seen any reports of people sliding around out there just yet. some light composite shows snow flurries generally close to the lake. nothing to write home about. much of

we have been covering it for a few hours, the death of judy bar topinka. the long time the only politician died after suffering a stroke. among the several live reports including interviews with reporters as well as politicians who knew her best. good morning, i'm dan ponce. and i'm lourdes duarte. let's go to demetrius ivory for a check of the weather. >> we are expecting temperatures to rise over the next few days. today's high is where it should be. we will see highs reached the low 50s by the weekend. early this morning we have cold numbers, head down in

few other construction projects out there. numbers otherwise are looking good. >> just a month after her re-election as illinois state comptroller, judy baar topinka has died. nancy loo is live at mac- neal hospital in berwyn. >> good morning. she died at around two a m. this morning. less than 24 hours after she was brought to the hospital after feeling discomfort. according to her office, the 70 year-old controller underwent testing for a stroke and she was under observation this morning when she lost consciousness and passed away. she showed no visible health problems in recent weeks as she campaigned successfully for a second term as state controller. she had previously served three terms as state treasurer, 95-2007. she was

born nearby in riverside and was a proud longtime resident. prior to politics, she worked for years as a journalist having earned a degree from northwestern school of journalism in 1966. she was sent to be sworn in for her second term as state comptroller next month. she is survived by an adult son who lives in texas, again, she's dead suddenly overnight from complications of a stroke. back to. >> to this note on the phone is rick pearson, political reporter for the chicago tribune. obviously she was a trail blazing politician well respected by both parties, how will she be remembered most? >> probably being remembered as perhaps being among the

last of the candidates who really spoke their mind. in 1994, when she was running for treasurer on a ticket edgar said he would like to strangle her sometimes because she would go into the editorial boards to contradict some of the programs that he was proposing. she had that confidence about her. she started as an outsider and really kept bad reputation of being a straight shooter. >> that's one of the things that always struck me about her, the fact that she told it like it is. she was not shy about telling you what was going on and she had a big personality. do you have any anecdotes or things that you remember personally about her? >> during the many campaigns for public office, her aides often said they had to keep her focused going to the next campaign event . any

time she saw a big rush sale. absurdly, she would boast about her latest passionate acquisition from a resale store. >> obviously she was, even in a liberal state like ours, she was a fiscal conservative, but still pro- choice, pro gay rights. she reached across party lines. who will you reach out to as you work on her obituary? >> you are right. her support it did cross party boundaries. being a social moderate she was an early supporter of gay rights, abortion rights, sometimes to the detriment of those in her own party from a social as conservative a plane. she was able to survive and be successful in a republican party that was released split along those lines. there is no shortage of

people across party lines, she used to get support from organized labor as a traditional ally, she played the way she knew her she could and she was successful. >> one of the interesting things as the read through the obituary, in 2005 and she decided she was going to run for governor and actually ran at the time. i don't know if you could do a tape back and remember what that moment was like or what that time was like for her as a campaigner. >> basically, she looked at herself and looked at the party as is somebody going to step up? and there was nobody she thought was going to be able to win who stepped up. we remember, coming out of the scandal of george ryan at the time. and even when blagoyovich was

running, he was a voracious fund-raiser which ended up costing him in prison, he ran a loss of a-tv ads that he to her as george ryan's treasurer. those kinds of things that it really, even in the primary there was the famous commercial of her doing a dance with george ryan with the accordion she used to play, when she won the republican primary that year, she only got 38 percent of the vote. that shows you how split the republicans were. she ended up losing 50%-40%. >> they do so much for your time. will check in with you later in the newscast. >> coming up, more remembrances including interviews with the longtime republican leader in the illinois house. you can find

we learned early this morning that illinois state comptroller judy baar topinka has died. she died of complications from a stroke at the age of 70. she went to macneal hospital in berwyn yesterday after feeling discomfort -- then passed away early this morning. here's a quick look at judy baar topinka's career: she started as a journalist after graduating from

northwestern university's medill school of journalism. she was first elected as a state representative in 1980. then she went on to be a state senator in 19-84. she won the illinois treasurer's office in 19-94. she ran for governor and lost to rod blagojevich in 2006-- she was the first republican woman to be nominated for governor in illinois. she won the comptrollers office in 20-10-- and was just reelected last month for a second term. we'll have more on her career -- and reaction from people who knew her-- throughout the morning on the w-g-n morning news-- and on w-g-n tv dot com. the cubs have reportedly landed the biggest pitcher available in free agency. left hander jon lester is coming to chicago after agreeing to a six year deal worth 155-million dollars. that's just under 26- million dollars a year. his former team the red sox, the giants, and the dodgers were also trying to sign him. lester is 30 years old and ahe won two world series titles with the red sox,

who they couldn't agree on a contract. police in lake station, indiana are trying to determine why this man, 84- year-old john laco, fired a shotgun into the air outside lake station city hall. when they responded, he got out of his car with the gun, and pointed it at police. so officers shot him to death. a thief stole a salvation army kettle in oak lawn. it happened just after six last night, outside the walgreens on 95th near ridgeland. a salvation army spokeswoman says the bell ringer was on break at the time. the thief stole the kettle, stand and money ... all worth about 4-hundred dollars. a report on c-i-a interrogation techniques describes what was done to some detainees to get information. methods included waterboarding, sleep deprivation, and rectal feeding. the c-i-a disputes the report's findings that these methods didn't lead to accurate intelligence. some republicans say this report threatens american lives overseas. a c-t-a bus driver is injured after a van crashed into a bus overnight. it happened in the 47- hundred block of south talman avenue. police say it started as a pursuit... when the van's driver failed to pull over after running a stop sign. police say the 2003 ford

then hit the c-t-a bus along with five other parked cars. the bus driver was taken to holy cross in stable condition. investigators found the van to be stolen. the driver is in custody. the family of a murdered loyola student says they'll honor his memory by trying to mirror his grace. students, faculty and staff grieved at a campus memorial today for mutahir rauf. the promising young man was shot and killed friday during a robbery attempt near loyola university. loved ones say he wanted to be a doctor to give back to the world. an older brother urged prayers for an end to violence in the streets. an interfaith prayer service for non-violence will be held this afternoon in the mundelein auditorium on campus. >> we seek peace, not vengeance, understanding, we see this as being symptomatic of a greater epidemic of poverty and violence in chicago. >> the prayer service will be held this afternoon. >> the state has cut ties with a private vendor and

then ran the illinois lottery. the contract was terminated yesterday. governor clinton directed it to end its relationship star of watery group over performance concerns. only three years into the tenure contracts and targets were missed all of them. >> a sheep found wandering the streets in omaha while wearing a holiday sweater, has been reunited with its owners. the family says they didn't even realize the sheep was missing, until they saw its picture on facebook. it was posted by the nebraska humane society after the sheep was picked up over the weekend. the shelter knew it was a beloved pet, because it was so fashion-forward. >> we love him. i got attached to it. >> i like him to. the family doesn't know how they sheep got out, but they are thinking about letting him
