here. we are hearing reports that least one rescue has been made. though it were yet on the person's condition but we can tell you that the county coroner's office is here on the scene. firefighters are actively dealing with this house fire on 121. i talked with a number of neighbors who tell me a man lived alone in the home. not clear if anyone else was in the home. but we are hearing that one person was taken from the home. no word on their condition. the coroner's office is at the scene. that's the latest from here. back to you. >> three chicago police officers were injured when their squad car was hit on the south side, then pinned

against a light pole. the crash happened just after eight last night, near 87th and loomis. the squad car was heading west, about to make a right turn ... when it was hit by another westbound car. that driver will be cited. the passenger of that vehicle has a head injury from hitting the windshield. a firefighter was also hurt while trying to free the officers from the wreckage. police are still looking for two men who fled the scene of a fatal hit and run accident. it happened just before eight o clock sunday morning... in the 27-hundred block of west division street. police say two males in a tan 20-10 honda c-r-v with wisconsin license plates -- hit a 63 year old woman, head-on before fleeing the scene. protesters marched through chicago and wound up outside president obama's house in hyde park. about 200 people gathered there, but security didn't allow them near the home. niether the president, or his family, were there. but the protesters say they were there to demand that the president end, what they called, the war on minorities in america. earlier, police arrested two people for obstructing

traffic near michigan and it's unclear how long illinois' next state comptroller will serve. but he or she will have a tough act to follow. jury baar topinka died yesterday, before she could be sworn in for her second term. and state politicians agree, her three-decade career has secured her political legacy. >> of the revenue issues were says nobody ever went asleep during her speech because she would say something and you would question what she said. >> she had a big part and you could see it within two minutes of spending time with her beloved her. >> the state constitution gives the outgoing governor, pat quinn, the authority to name at least a *temporary successor. if quinn chooses someone, it'll be up to the *lawyers to argue whether incoming governor bruce rauner has the power to replace that person with a *permanent successor. the uptown worker shot during a drive-by shooting near truman college has died. he is identified as 21- year-old leonardo matias. police say he was shot in

the head about 10 o'clock yesterday morning in the 11- hundred block of west wilson avenue. they say it appears matias was not the intended target. he was taken to illinois masonic medical center in critical condition. family members tell their local pastor they're still in shock about what happened. >> as all parents can imagine they are struggling greatly in great pain trying to understand exactly what happened. knowing that their son had no involvement in anything that could have led to something like this. >> police are still looking for the gunman.. a public defender is hospitalized after his client attacked him inside the cook county jail. authorities say jimmie terrell smith hit the attorney with his handcuffs. the attorney suffered a cut to the back of his head... and was conscious and talking as he was taken to the hospital. smith has been awaiting trial in the rapes of five women and two 14-year old girls, among other charges. a cook county judge sentenced allan kustok to 60 years in prison for the murder of his wife. kustok was convicted of

killing his wife jeanie, in in 2010. prosecutors say he shot her at close range in their bed. they say kustok never called 9-1-1 and waited 90 minutes before he took her to the hospital. at yesterday's hearing, kustok said he didn't call 9-1-1 because he wanted to be with her for as long as possible. the defense says it plans to file an appeal for a new trial within the next 30- days. some relief for city cab drivers. the city council approved lower lease rates, fines and credit card transaction fees. also...they plan to set up a smartphone app for taxis. it adds up to 8- thousand dollars in yearly savings for drivers. the council postponed action on a proposal to require many gas stations to offer "e-15" gas. it has more corn-based ethanol than regular unleaded gas. it's not clear whether e-15 would cost less, or do anything to reduce pollution. retired archbishop francis george received the city's highest honor, "the medal of merit." because of his ongoing fight with cancer, george needed a crutch to make his way to accept his award.

he was hailed for his 17- years of service. >> as people in public life, actually he says something to reach out in a gesture of kindness. you do something you're not aware of because it is part of who you are any transformed someone's life. that is what is eternal. >> archbishop george is the first person in more than a decade to receive the city's highest honor. he asked the council to support his successor, archbishop blase cupich. there are plans to rebuild an historic firehouse that was destroyed by a fire. an extra alarm fire started on the roof of the chicago firehouse restaurant in the south loop yesterday. roofers were up there at the time. no one was hurt, but the roof caved in before the flames were put out. the building was built in 1905 and is a city landmark. it kept the firehouse look when it was turned into a restaurant in 2000. a good samaritan is helping the salvation army after a thief stole a red kettle in oak lawn.

it happened tuesday night outside the walgreens on 95th near ridgeland. the bell ringer was on break when someone took the kettle, stand and money ... all worth about 4-hundred dollars. a lawyer from chicago saw our story and decided to cover the cost, plus give an extra 4-hundred dollars. >> even in these hard times what the person did was terrible. hopefully we can use this as an example to help the salvation army. >> the thief has not been caught. the salvation army says they also don't want the theft to take away from the 600- thousand dollars in donations it has received so far this holiday season. a popular haunted house in moline didn't bother cleaning up after halloween ... they just added christmas decorations to it. hong kong: police moved in and started clearing out the main pro-democracy protest site. protesters have been occupying a stretch of highway that runs through the city's financial district for several months.they've been trying to pressure the government to implement political reforms, including fully free elections. police dismantled barricades and tents following a court injunction requested by a bus company. the protesters did not resist them. a 67-year-old fisherman got caught in bad weather off the hawaiian coast, and spent 12 days stranded in the pacific ocean. but ron ingraham survived somehow. his sailboat filled with water on thanksgiving day, and he couldn't get to shore. four days later, the coast guard gave up its search for him. but eventually, one of ingraham's mayday calls was picked up by a navy ship... and he was rescued. sea water isn't fit for drinking... so ingraham had to improvise. >> i hydrated on the fish. i

caught fish. it was not as good as the sushi bar but that's how i stayed hydrated. >> ingraham insisted that his rescuers tow his *boat back to shore. it's not only his livelihood... but also his home. a sex offender in florida may have gotten the break he'd been hoping for... after cashing in his lottery ticket. timothy poole spent three years in prison for a sex crime involving a 9 year old boy. he denied the allegations at first, but was offered a plea bargain after spending 13 months in jail. over the weekend, poole bought a scratch-off lottery ticket at a 7-eleven. it turned out to be a winner!! he cashed it out... taking a lump-sum payout of 2-point-2 million dollars. >> some people get lucky. 75-year-old john przybyla was arrested for drunk driving in adams county, wisconsin. a police officer says he smelled alcohol, but przybyla said he had not been drinking. he said the smell is from "beer battered fish."

of one to one. but for over one our firefighters were battling a lot of smoke and flames. that was after rescuing the man from an upper floor bedroom. no providing him. the fire was called in by police officers who were passing by. they noticed the smoke just before 3:00 a.m. while out on patrol. >> the officers notified by capt. there was an individual inside there was too much smoke. my men went inside the rescued the individual out but unfortunately he was a fatality. >> he was a nice guy he'll was waived to everyone. >> at this point, the identity of the man killed is not known. obviously the cause of this fire is just being investigated. live in

while trying to free the officers from the wreckage. police in mississippi are following new leads in the death of a teenager who was burned alive. investigators say some kind of accelerant was used to set jessica chambers' car on fire on a rural road saturday night. her family claims the accelerant was poured down her throat. chambers whispered something to firefighters before she died, but authorities are not saying what it was. surveillance video from a gas station shows chambers stopping to talk to someone shortly before she died. police are also looking into a phone call she received prior to leaving her house. we are shocked. confused and angry and hurt. we are devastated. >> a man who knew chambers was questioned by police and released without charges. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. governor quinn says he hasn't made any decisions yet on whether to appoint a successor to the late state

comptroller judy baar topinka... or let his successor do it. quinn has the right to choose the comptroller. but the state constitution says, governor-elect bruce rauner may have the right to choose a *permanent replacement, when he takes office next month. the chicago city council voted to reduce tax drivers' lease fees, fines and credit card processing costs, and to create a smartphone app for calling cabs. the net result could be lots of extra money in drivers' pockets, without a fare hike. the council put off action on whether to force some gas stations to sell gasoline with extra corn- based ethanol. police brutality protesters wound up in front of president obama's house in hyde park. security kept them away, but no one was home. the protesters say they want the president to change a legal system that, they say, works against minorities. two protesters were arrested downtown for blocking traffic. more than 100,000 catholics are quantitate part in the annual palin pilgrimage to our lady of guadalupe. it very popular for hispanics .

terror detainees. they say the techniques were brutal, and they did not lead to any intelligence that stopped future attacks. leaders in germany, afghanistan, china, and iran are attacking the findings. but dick cheney says the report is "deeply flawed" and a "terrible piece of work." the c-i-a's acting general counsel, who is mentioned more than 200 times in the report, still defends what was done. >> the actual techniques authorized, i do not believe there were harsh there were brittle but did not believe the reached the threshold of torture. there were just occasional . there were not the defining future of the program, the program went on for seven years. >> senator mark kirk is among the republicans attacking the report. he says its the work of democrats who are being pushed out of washington. senator dick durbin says he supports the report's release and criticized the ineffective interrogation techniques.

the u.s. navy says it couldn't be more pleased with its newest weapon in the fight against piracy on the high seas. the navy has been testing a laser gun that can disable an approaching pirate ship... or sink it. it can also take out an aerial drone. and at less than a dollar per laser shot, it's cheap to operate. the new weapon was mounted on the "u.s.s. ponce" in the arabian gulf, four months ago. that is the actual name by the way. it didn't make that up. and the navy says it has performed beyond expectations. the next project, is developing a laser that can shoot down a *missile. just outside the city of pr. >> a city and you have your own ship. president obama says more than one-billion dollars in federal and private funds will be used to boost early education. this came yesterday during an early education summit at the white house. last year, obama called on congress, private businesses, and public organizations to help get young children access to early education. the event highlighted the best programs, funding initiates, and cooperative works in early education.

a north suburban school board member's controversial remarks about gays and lesbians were caught on tape. now, some leaders in warren township district 121 in gurnee want board member liz biondi to step down. the district is searching for a successor to superintendent mary perry bates. at a meeting last week, biondi said she hopes the board won't hire a *gay superintendent. >> if we hire someone that we are not aware of their background, they may be finding more personal fires and superintendent fires . >> what does that say to the student body about their value and the value of diversity that we to value in this district? >> biondi says she has no *personal dislike of gays... and she's only repeating what some parents in district 121 have told her. most of us are familiar with "l-o-l" or "o-m-g" ... but teenagers have a texting language that goes well beyond those familiar phrases that even we use... and deciphering those codes

stories we are talking about this morning. including a picture from stonsony pictures. we've been talking about the hack for weeks. embarrassing emails have been posted on the web site surrounding their failed attempt to make a biopic about the life of steve jobs. once private emails show complaints about an actress who pulled their director away from the film to focus on a project she did about cleopatra. they call her in minimally talented spoiled brats. this is people should not focus on the emailed but instead it looking at the criminal act and the people behind it should be treated as nothing more or less than criminals. we talked a survey of about privacy and the text messages from the bears game and people are talking about whether we should even be posting these on-line because they were stolen. a
