another bullet. i know everybody is waiting for the snow blocked to drop. but the cold weather will not arrive this weekend. patchy fog early on could slowdown. we have fog especially in areas outside of chicago. near average high in the '30's. right now visibility only 3 mi. and bartlett. in dekalb only half a mile. joliet, 1.7 mi.. 5 mi. in kankakee. this will linger close to 10 or 11:00. keep that in mind. 23 at o'hare. chicago reads at 26. 21 in kankakee. some light composite shows we are dry. you may see where that falk is coming into this area. sun and clouds today highs in the upper 30s. typically we are in the mid-30s. with say warmer than normal for the weekend. 48 on saturday.

street in the park manor neighborhood. smoke detectors in the building were working when firefighters got there. the fire wasn't noticeable from the outside. the wheelchair bound victim been made their way out to the third floor. the hallway was clear of smoke but when we opened the door there were exposed to the fire so it was quickly put out to. one man to die. >> the wheelchair-bound victim was 51-years-old. his identity has not been released. two elderly women were hospitalized in serious condition. two fire fighters are recovering from minor injuries.. after a multi- alarm fire at resurrection medical center. flames broke out just after 9:30 last night.. in the 74- hundred block of west talcott avenue -- on the city's northwest side. authorities say the fire started in second floor chapel. no patients or hospital staff were injured, but the second and third floors

were evacuated. investigators are looking into what caused the fire. a massive celebration continues in des plaines this morning. tens ot thousands of pilgrims are gathered to offer their prayers and promises to "our lady of guadalupe." nancy loo is there with more. them up there are quite a few people here, even at 4:00 a.m.. the crowd is a dinner for the overnight mass but pilgrims continue to flock to the shrine. hundreds gathered at midnight for the mass led by the new archbishop. >> he addressed pilgrims in spanish for most of the time reflecting the latin american routes of this annual tradition. the shrine

is the only one like it outside of mexico city. by the closing of mass at 7:00 p.m. tonight, the total number of programs is expected to top 120,000. many will walk up to 10 mi. or more back to their home parish. the archbishop addressed the significance of the journey. >> we take this group together, we go slowly with those who go slower we also search out to those who have lost their way. >> we comment to celebrate the faith. the face in the lord and in our lady guadeloupe. >> more than 40 percent of the 2.2 million catholics in the chicago area are hispanic. the celebration continues with another mass in about one hour.

>> an attack on the blue line -- caught on camera by the perpetrators themselves. it's helping out police. take a look. this recording shows two men taking turns smacking and jabbing an elderly man. no police report was filed... but the video was uploaded to youtube. police saw it. with nearly 90 thousand views...there's a lot of anger over it. >> it's an assault when you put your hands of somebody it an assault. >> it's heartbreaking to see how somebody would terrorize somebody like this. >> the recording *did capture the faces of the attackers. it's not clear when they attack happened. the c-t-a is turning-over additional surveillance video to police. police want the victim to come forward and file a report. the house survived an eleventh-hour rebellion by democrats, to endorse a spending bill to keep the government running through september. andrew spencer

reports....it's now up to the *senate to prevent a government shutdown. >> of the 1.1 trillion dollars spending bill would fund most of the government through september. running short on time, the senate avoided the shutdown at midnight by agreeing to a two day extension. the bill, negotiated by both houses ran into the opposition in the house. even the most outspoken critics- >> here we are being blackmailed, blackmailed to vote for in appropriations bill . >> the say shutdown won't happen. a month are you willing to be held responsible for shutting down the government? >> we are not shutting down here >> i know there is a lot of concern but at the last part of session to have trauma it's like saying the sun is coming up tomorrow. >> the house was able to squeeze the bill through before midnight here >> the motion is adopted.

>> invoked in the senate will likely happen sometime today. back to. >> there won't be any immediate push for a special election to chose a new illinois state comptroller. judy baar topinka died of a stroke earlier this week, before she could be sworn in for her second term. house speaker mike madigan says it's up to the governor, either pat quinn or bruce rauner, to appoint topinka's successor. madigan says the legislature will stay out of it. a memorial service for judy baar topinka has been scheduled for next wednesday morning. it'll be held at the headquarters of the international union of operating engineers, in countryside. topinka reportedly stated in her final legal documents that she did *not want a funeral or wake... but said her friends and family members could hold a memorial service for her, following her cremation. the final proposals are in for the obama presidential library. the university of chicago

and the university of illinois at chicago are among the four finalists. but officials at the university of chicago say the city isn't a "shoo-in". the university still needs the land to build it. new york city's "columbia university" is considered the college's biggest challenger. the university of hawaii is also in the running. it could be a devine sign in a frying pan. at least that's what andrew key of austin, texas, thinks of a burn mark on a cooked tortilla. he thinks it looks a lot like the face of jesus with a beard. he says he won't use it in a taco....but will keep it safe. of course, it also looks a lot like the most interesting man in the world from those beer commercials. the case of a missing family i am always torn . and never know what to think of these. >> state thursday by friend. that's what i say . let's

family in california has been solved. it ended in a dramatic standoff on a highway overpass near san diego. that's where police arrested daniel perez, and freed his four sons. perez, his wife erica and the boys vanished last friday. erica perez's body was found wednesday in the trunk of the family car. her husband is suspected of killing her and kidnapping his sons. no charges have been filed yet. a federal judge in saint louis says police there, and those in nearby ferguson, were too quick to use tear gas on people who protested the michael brown case. a federal lawsuit was filed, to try to force limits on the use of tear gas. the police argued that they used it, only after the protests turned violent and destructive. the judge ruled that saint louis area police must issue warnings, and give protesters plenty of time to disperse, before resorting to tear gas. but the judge did *not say tear gas must be used only as a last resort. native american tribes can

grow and sell marijuana on their lands as long as they follow the same rules as states that have legalized it. that ruling from the justice department yesterday. whether pot will become a big business on reservations like casino gambling has is unclear. many tribes oppose legalization and only a few have expressed interest in the cannabis industry. there are over 550 tribes recognized by the federal government. a time capsule buried for more than 200 years has accidentally been found. it happened yesterday in boston. crews working on water main break, stumbled upon the capsule... under a cornerstone of the massachusetts state house. it's believed to be the oldest unopened time capsule in the u-s.. containing artifacts and coins dating back to 17-95. it was first buried by governor samuel adams, paul revere and william scollay. the capsule will be restored and preserved at the museum of fine arts in boston. a powerful storm known as the "pineapple express"

ripped through the west coast, causing at least 2 deaths. winds nearing 100-miles-per- hour and heavy rains caused streets to flood.. leaving more than 150-thousand homes and businesses in the bay area without power. the rising tide destroyed 2 houses. many brave surfers took advantage of the 7-foot waves.. but... as the storm moved south, official warned that dangerous rip currents and 15-foot waves are likely. that's a big wave. >> that storm and another storm, one of the east coast are all working to keep things pretty nice for us. out to the west we have that storm, the pineapple express, in a low pressure system that just comes in from the south. you can see it the moisture california is covered even down to los angeles. to the east we have a nor'easter and pressing

forward... saying bricker fondled her on a wyoming camping trip in 19-68. meantime, bricker is in hospice care in his michigan home... fighting extradition to wyoming. taking a look at the *other top stories this morning. fire broke out in a senior living center in the park manor neighborhood, killing a man who was confined to a wheelchair. two women were hospitalized in serious condition. the cause is under investigation. the fire was contained to one apartment on the third floor where the man was found. police are looking for two men who assaulted an elderly man on the blue line. this recording shows them smacking and jabbing at the man. it's unclear when the attack actually happened. the c-t-a is turning-over additional surveillance video to police. authorities say they need the victim to come forward and file a police report. former chicago cop steven mandell will spend the rest of his life in prison for plotting to torture, kill and chop up a riverside

marching against police violence. critics say the 1974 song has been used by some bigoted groups as an anthem of southern pride with confederate-type values. the officer in question said he was blaring the song as a fan of the university of alabama. the team won a big game on saturday. attorney general eric holder will be in chicago today. he'll talk about trust between law enforcement and civilians. he'll also lead a discussion... on how the obama administration can improve the relations between police departments and its citizens. similar events also happened in other cities across the country. sony's co-president is apologizing for comments she made about some hollywood's a-listers. personal emails were leaked during sony's massive hack.. including those between co- chairman amy pascal and producer scott rudin. the emails included insensitive comments about angelina jolie, kevin hart and president obamna.... pascal apologized and accepted full

for the first time since july 2009. stocks still game. nasdaq up 24 . s&p finishes higher. if you are looking for a job, 2015 may be your year. 60 percent of employers expect to increase hiring in 2015 but according to a survey, 40 percent said they have trouble finding the proper candidates. the problem is many are overqualified for those positions available so the

they stay in the become caramelized and these i did earlier this morning, check out the difference. the more they stay on here but sweeter they get. however, we cheat and we take some coca-cola and instead of adding sugar to the onions with for some of this on top. it increases the time for them to be caramelized. you can see the difference. we're going to make a chart salami sandwich. the trick here is when you throw these on the grill, you don't want them to curl up. so what i am doing, is by a matching the four corners. here we have one of our charter of salami sandwiches. let me show you how to do this the hot dog university style. i take one of these out,
