all planes are down at river road after 2 semi trucks collided. a pin in accident. driver is stuck in the car. they did call for the medical helicopter but because of the fall they cannot land. what a huge back up there. and we have three lanes down on the dan ryan at 63rd with a serious crash. and the train service of the matra elector klein has been fully restored from 93 to stoney island. once again trains are on the move. that's a look of traffic. another update in just a bit. >> we continue to follow developing news in australia, where a gunman has been holding people hostage for about 13-hours. mary moloney has more. >> on a busy monday morning, a gunman enters a cafe and takes hostages. people inside holding up their hands and pressing them

tomorrow. his twin brother also attends the school. sunday, community activists . to have lost children to gun violence gathered near the side of where he was killed. expressing hurt and anger and support for the family but also urging anyone with information to help police speaking out. saturday afternoon the brothers got off a bus and were walking to their school for basketball practice when four people attempted to rob them at 63rd and state telling them to give it up. one robber got on top of the brother . barely pushed the proper off and was shot in the chest when he refused to give up his jacket. >> i am to stop and angry and i'm tired of the violence . we have to make it stop. our lives a matter. we need to end the code of silence. >> he is a brother of all of us. taken by senseless gun violence over a coat. to think of a young man and

what he was going through under this viaduct brings tears in the eyes of all of us through this city. >> regarding the search for other suspects, police responded that the investigation is ongoing. the suspect also charged with armed robbery in connection with an incident that happened nearby before the boy was shot and killed. >> two convicted cop killers will be sentenced today. toyious taylor and paris mc-gee were both convicted of killing chicago police officer thomas wortham the fourth. wortham was off duty when he was shot outside his parents home in the chatham neighborhood, in 2010. he was then hit by a car and dragged down the street. both taylor and mc-gee face mandatory life sentences. two men have been arrested in connection with a string of car burglaries in palatine. astamur gumba of buffalo grove... is charged with one count of stolen property. danylo anufriiev of arlington heights was

charged with four counts of felony burglary. police tracked the two men friday morning... after a 9-1-1 call. a woman told police one of the men had been running through the neighborhood, dropping things. police found a cellphone, camera and charger. they had been stolen out of unoccupied cars. the decision to close 9 catholic schools across the archdiocese... is final. despite an outcry among parents and students of the affected schools... new archbishop blase cupich said the closure plan "must move forward". cardinal francis george ordered the school closings as one of his final acts as archbishop earlier this year. the decision came amid rising costs and declining enrollments. the schools slated for closure have an average enrollment of about 125 students. three people were arrested and charged during police brutality protests over the weekend. authorities say david rucker and alfredo reyes punched a police officer who was trying to get them back onto the sidewalk in the 500 block of north michigan. they're charged with assault

and resisting arrest. another man faced similar charges in a separate incident. marchers across the city gathered on sunday to express anger over the recent deaths of michael brown in ferguson, missouri and eric garner in new york. a west side pastor declared yesterday, "black lives matter" sunday. thousands of protestors the nation saturday... participating in the 'justice for all' march. protesters demanding an end to police brutality reiterated their message. in boston... protestors led the march with a banner reading 'shut it down.' and in washington... the demonstration was filled with familiar messages including 'justice for all...' and 'black lives matter.' taking a look back... yesterday marked the second anniversary of the sandy hook elementary school massacre... that took the lives of 26 people. over the weekend... local churches across newtown, connecticut and throughout the state... took a few moments to remember the lost lives. candles were lit during prayer services.. to honor the victims and to pray for an end to gun violence everywhere. illinois comes in 30th on a list of states ranked by their overall health. physical inactivity and obesity rates increased nationwide in the annual report put out by the

unitedillinois' challenges include a high prevalence of binge drinking, high levels of air pollution ... and a high rate of preventable hospitalizations. but, the state was applauded for having readily available primary care physicians and dentists ... and a low occupational fatality rate. the deadline is tonight to sign-up for health insurance under the affordable care act, if you want it to take effect on january first. obamacare requires that most americans have health insurance at the start of the year, or pay a penalty. the deadline for new customers to pick a plan, or current enrollees to make changes, is midnight pacific time. the enrollment period ends february 15th. one of rahm emanuel's former opponents is now endorsing him for re- election. gery chico ran against emanuel four years ago. now he is endorsing the mayor who spent yesterday trying to collect support from latino voters. emanuel had two events in little village. another one of his former opponents is still against him.. miguel del-valle announced he's endorsing jesus garcia. >> it's important to me can

story is a wgn news exclusive.... 20 years - the murder of 11 year old robert 'yummy' sandifer....rocked the nation. the story of sandifer's violent life and death was only made more tragic because of the ages of the two brothers convicted in his murder. sandifer's death came in the midst of a 72 hour manhunt for the 11 year old. he was wanted in connection with the shooting death of a 16 year old south side girl.sandifer's death was allegedly ordered by high ranking members of his gang. fellow gang members-- 16 years old - cragg hardway and his 14 year old brother- were arrested and convicted in sandifer's

low lying fault is a big problem out there. visibility is an issue. first accident on the outbound bake just kick it off. a semi off into the ditch at 83. the second semi off the road at lake. not too far from each other causing backups. an even bigger issue is the stevenson. a road all lanes are down. they have been down for nearly 50 minutes after 2 semi trucks collided. the backups go past lorenzo road. over 3 mi. at this point. this is going into the morning rush so it's a big problem . fall so that they could not land at the medical helicopter to help the victims in those accidents. a-94, more of the same, limited visibility another crash partially blocking the indianapolis black bart entrance ramp. and lake shore drive, to separate crashes in the same spot. one was a roll over and now we have a car that collided and took the wrong

were set free. one local report says they've counted about 15- men and women, but no children. the gunman is reportedly demanding an i-sis flag and a phone call from australia's prime minister. this witness says he saw the gunman through the window. >> he was called just pacing and looking out. and customers were still sitting at the tables. i don't know how alert to the work as to what was happening. >> police have identified the gunman's name, but they're telling media not to release it. the prime minister says he's politically motivated. a murder charge has been filed in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy who was protecting his twin brother.police say four people approached demario bailey and his brother as they walked under a viaduct on 63rd near state street, saturday afternoon. police say the robbers started going through the boys' pockets. bailey got into a fight with one of them, who was on top of his brother. police say that's when 17- year-old carlos johnson shot

auburn university. markdale hart is being held on felony murder charges in the death of 18-year old jakell mitchell. mitchell's girlfriend says he was arguing with a man at a party ... when someone pulled a handgun and opened fire. he later died at a hospital. mitchell was expected to compete for a starting spot as a tight end or halfback next season. two babies, born in two different states ... share one special birthday and time. victoria jones was born in arizona on saturday at 10- eleven a-m. combine that with the date, and she was born at 10- eleven ... on 12, 13, 14. another baby in ohio shares the same birth time and date. there won't be another sequential calendar date for 20 years. it will happen on january second of 20-34. this weekend marked a special day... 12-13-14. it's a rare sequential date we won't see again in our lifetimes...making it a special day for couples getting married. according to david's bridal, more than 13-thousand couples registered their weddings for saturday. that's twice as many as
