>> announcer: don't miss these inspirational stories of cancer survival in the following program brought to you by cancer treatment centers of america. >> announcer: this is a story about fighting cancer, a story about fighting complex and advanced-stage cancers heartbreaking cancers, but it's not a tragedy as you might expect. it's a comeback story, because these people -- rod, melanie and terry -- sought and found a different way to fight these difficult cancers -- a way, as it turns out, that was just right for them. their stories will challenge you. they will inspire you. but most importantly, they will
4:01 am
give you the one thing those with complex or advanced-stage cancers need more than anything else -- hope. hope that there could be a different way, a better way that could make them believe in tomorrows again. and though our heroes begin their journeys in different parts of the country, they will all pass through the doors of cancer treatment centers of america -- a place that never gives up, a place where they do things differently, where clinical expertise state-of-the-art technology, and integrative treatment options provide patients with treatment plans they, themselves, have a say in. taking command of their own treatment -- that's what fighters do, and if there's anyone who knows about fighting cancer, it's rod echols -- a young man married to the love of his life, a dad dedicated to raising his children... >> daddy! yes! >> announcer: ...a person who has just too much living left to do.
4:02 am

[ laughter ] >> [ laughs ] >> rod and i make a good team. we actually refer to ourselves as team echols. >> my favorite part about being a dad is just to see their faces in the morning when i wake them up. >> we got, at any given time, 10 different things going on that we're juggling. preston eats all of his breakfast. >> announcer: rod and keisha had every day planned down to the minute. they were a well-oiled machine. but in june of 2012, something went wrong. >> i wasn't feeling, you know, up to par. you know when something's not right going on in your body, so that's what kind of triggered me to go in. >> announcer: rod scheduled a colonoscopy and received the results the following day. >> [ voice breaking ] and the doctor came in with this very
4:03 am
serious look on his face [sighs] with some pictures and said that he found something that he's pretty sure that it's cancer. >> the first you think about is your wife and your kids and your family. you think about what would life be like for them without you. >> announcer: with his family in mind, rod had surgery immediately to remove the cancer. after the surgery, they discovered the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. he was told he needed a second surgery that he felt was too invasive. >> and it came back after my follow-up that i needed a second surgery. and that's when i said i need a second opinion. >> announcer: rod got that second opinion at cancer treatment centers of america, a hospital that focuses on treating complex and advanced-stage cancers. >> walking into cancer treatment centers of america, we both felt like, "we're here. we're in the right place. it's really gonna be okay now." >> announcer: rod and keisha met with his entire care team, that included dr. christian hyde, a radiation oncologist. >> rod came in with a pretty advanced cancer, and it had
4:04 am
spread into some lymph nodes in the area. and i remember thinking, "he's just like me." almost the same life circumstances as far as having kids and raising a family. he just happens to have cancer. >> announcer: rod's care team reviewed his case and presented him with some options. >> we combined chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery in order to shrink the tumor so that the surgeon could take it out in one complete piece. >> announcer: this approach allowed the surgery to be minimally invasive and gave rod a choice he was comfortable with. >> i feel like this was the right way for me, the right treatment for me, the right process for me to go through. >> announcer: in addition to chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, rod's treatment plan included naturopathic medicine and nutrition to help him stay healthy during treatment and keep up with his family's busy schedule. >> nutrition plays a very big role in cancer treatment. things that i will do is help to guide them through the types of food to eat for a balanced diet and also strategies to help if
4:05 am
he's having some type of side effect that may be compromising his nutritional status. rod's treatment has actually been great. he hasn't had that many side effects. >> i was able to go through chemo and radiation at the same time and go to work on the same day. it was active, and it was also you know, a way for me to feel normal. >> rod continued to work full time during his treatment. i don't know how, 'cause some days, you know, were rough days, but he just was a trouper. i really respect the guy, 'cause he didn't complain and he didn't slack and he didn't skip. he just said, "we got to do this, and i'm gonna do it." and he did it. >> announcer: after his second surgery and follow-up chemotherapy, rod and keisha sat down with dr. george daneker his surgical oncologist, to find out the results. >> this is your pre-operative scan, so you can see where we connected things back together right there. this looks good. this was connected.
4:06 am
none of this contrast leaked out. i mean, the reality is that you're so healthy it'll heal beautifully, so that's the advantage. we were able to really do a very complete and precise operation and it's really extremely satisfying for all of us that rod has done well and he continues to do well. my hope is that rod will be able to live a normal life, that the effects of his treatment will be minimum, that he will be able to enjoy his wife and his family just like anybody can. >> announcer: with his scans looking good, rod will continue with his treatment plan. back at home, he's enjoying spending time with his wife and children. >> the kids and the family motivated me -- not letting them see me down, just being positive and taking control of the situation and not letting it have control over me. >> ride 'em, cowboy! [ laughs ] >> i may be tired, exhausted but as soon as i wake up in the morning, it's like, "make it a great day."
4:07 am
>> [ smooches ] rod's diagnosis changed my perspective in that you have to enjoy those little things. don't sweat the small stuff. the experience has definitely made us stronger as a couple. to see him, oh, go through this with the strength that he has has been wonderful for me to see. >> cancer treatment center of america had everything under one roof. it's perfect. i know that everyone there has my best interests at heart. it makes you feel like you're a part of the family. i think this whole process of going through cancer has given me a different outlook and a different take on life. it's a new normal for me right now, but i know there's a light at the end of the tunnel. >> announcer: when you're fighting cancer, every day counts, every decision counts, and the choice of who helps you in that fight can be the most important decision of all. >> my whole world just, like stopped -- shut down.

4:12 am

4:13 am
kidney damage or bladder damage, and so i knew there had to be a better way. >> announcer: melanie searched for a place where she could get a treatment plan tailored to her specific needs. she heard about cancer treatment centers of america. >> and they got me here within a week, 'cause, again, i was on a timeline. i needed to get a second opinion and figure out what protocol we were gonna use to treat my cancer. >> hi. how are you? >> i am doing good. how are you doing? >> good to see you. >> announcer: dr. sagun shrestha says many oncologists never see carcinosarcoma of the uterus because of how extremely rare it is. but because cancer treatment centers of america focuses on treating complex and advanced cancers, dr. shrestha has treated patients with it. melanie expressed her concern about the harsh chemotherapy treatment she had been offered so dr. shrestha began researching alternatives to make the chemo and radiation as smooth as possible. >> she ended up calling me four days later, and said, "hey we're gonna be able to do four
4:14 am
treatments of the less-toxic chemo." and i was very happy with that. and i said, "are you confident about that?" she goes, "yes. very confident." >> most of the time, the treatment options are doing surgery followed by either chemotherapy and radiation together versus the spreading of treatment. so, what we decided was chemotherapy first and then radiation therapy. >> we gave her five weeks of external radiation and also something called brachytherapy. brachytherapy is actually internal radiation, and it allows us to give more radiation without causing damage to the surrounding structures. >> announcer: although most patients are exhausted from their treatment, melanie wanted to stay active. >> she's doing an extraordinary amount of activity, so she really needed a lot of support nutritionally, both to keep those activities up, which she did all throughout her treatment, and also to keep her body in shape for the treatment. >> announcer: melanie was able to continue her athletic training throughout her
4:15 am
treatment, which kept her in shape for future competitions. >> three or four months after i got home from radiation, i competed in my first triathlon. i got third place. by july, i had my fastest time ever. i got first place, and so... cancer treatment centers of america and the people who treated me -- they helped me be able to do that type of performance. >> all right. thanks, my dear. >> announcer: it's been six months, and melanie is back for a checkup. >> this woman got bike maps for me so that i could bike when i was doing radiation. and she went out of her way to go get them. >> announcer: after her scans, melanie hears the results from her oncologist, dr. shrestha. >> the c.a.t. scan of the chest is normal. there's no disease. nothing new. c.a.t. scan of the abdomen and pelvis -- everything looks fine. no evidence of disease at this time. >> fantastic. >> okay? nothing new. >> yay! >> it's nice to be cancer-free one more time, so it's like peace of mind for six more months. iggy, pick a number between 200 and 220. >> 210. >> announcer: back in portland

and why our unique approach to patient empowered care has provided treatment options to cancer patients and their families for three decades. >> this is a life-altering journey you're about to embark upon. you really need to understand all the options. and you need people who care and who are concerned and can help you along the way. >> announcer: terry sanders is the kind of man any parent would be proud to call their son. >> [ laughs ] >> announcer: after a prestigious career in law enforcement, terry decided to move back home to be close to his parents and help in any way
4:20 am
he could as they entered retirement. he never imagined that he would be the one needing help. >> i am an only child and, you know, when i moved out here, i wanted to be there for them -- my dad and my mother. >> he's been a joy. he's been an absolute joy all his life. he's been a blessing to us in every way. >> he grew up to be just a good man. >> announcer: the sanders were enjoying having their son back in town. but then, in november of 2012, terry began to suffer from extreme fatigue. >> i started noticing my heart was pounding and i would walk 100 feet and have to stop and literally put my hands on my knees and, you know, sit there and breathe. and i realized something had gone wrong. so i was in trouble somewhere. >> he had told me, "mom, i feel like i'm having a hard time breathing." i said, "this is not right. you need to go to the doctor." >> announcer: after numerous medical tests and doctors appointments, finally, in october of 2013,
4:21 am
a chest scan revealed a mass growing between terry's heart and lungs. his local doctor scheduled a biopsy. a couple of days later, he got the results. >> it's my dad's birthday and i got a call from the hospital and it said, "hey, terry. just want to let you know we got your results back in. you do have diffuse large b-cell lymphoma." first thought that come to my mind was, you know, how is my family gonna deal with this? >> it was a shock. i tell everybody, it's like a sledgehammer hitting you in the stomach. >> you know, you're trying to assure your child that it's gonna be okay. but you don't know, yourself. >> announcer: terry was facing a devastating lymphoma diagnosis and turned to his parents for help. the sanders immediately began researching cancer treatment options. >> and i said, "lord just lead us. show me where we need to go. and i started searching and cancer treatment center just
4:22 am
kept popping up. and i said, "this is where we need to take him." >> announcer: after a year of traveling around to different doctors, the sanders decided that having all treatment under one roof was exactly what they were looking for. cancer treatment centers of america in tulsa arranged for terry and his parents to be there within a week. >> when i got there, i was shocked because on my appointment time everybody was in the same room waiting on me. that was a turning point. you're part of the team. you may be the patient, but you're just as integral as the next person standing there next to them. >> announcer: terry met with his team of doctors, including his oncologist dr. ritwick panicker. >> terry sanders is a young man in his 30s who was diagnosed with primary mediastinal b-cell lymphoma. it's a disease in which the lymph nodes in front of our heart enlarge and become malignant. fortunately for terry, we do
4:23 am
have a lot of weapons against this type of cancer. >> announcer: terry's plan included chemotherapy and radiation. however, if he doesn't respond to these conventional treatments, dr. panicker says that terry could be a candidate for a stem-cell transplant. >> we collect the patient's stem cells. then we give the patient high doses of chemotherapy, which eradicates the blood malignancy and all the existing stem cells. after this therapy, the stem cells from the patient that were previously collected are infused back. the idea is that the normal or good cells will return, whereas the malignancy will not return. >> you ready? >> come on with it. >> when i get off work, i get my treatment. and by monday i was back at work and i was feeling good about things again. >> love you. >> announcer: terry has been
4:24 am
going through chemotherapy treatments every couple of weeks for three months. >> last chemo. >> last chemo. >> announcer: now he's back at cancer treatment centers of america and sits down with dr. payne, his radiation oncologist to view the results of his latest scans. >> okay, so, this tells the whole story. this is november and this is a couple weeks ago -- january 31st. >> that's a good sign. >> so, it's gone. he's done well. looking at his pet scan, the one that he had before therapy showed a large tumor right in the middle of his chest. the one he had after the four or five cycles of chemotherapy, that was gone. things have to be a certain size to show up on the pet scan, so there still may be some active cells there. so, radiation is mainly used as a type of insurance to make sure we are able to kill cells that we don't see. >> announcer: terry will continue his treatment plan, but for now his scans are clear. >> it's great. it's great news. i don't really know how to put it in words.
4:25 am
>> announcer: back at home the sanders are enjoying the outdoors, going to church, and just spending time with family and friends. >> i am going to get better. i'm gonna grow my hair back out. [ laughs ] my family and i are gonna try to take as many trips as possible. i'm gonna go see some friends that i haven't seen since college. i learned that you take every single day and you live the best way you possibly can. >> announcer: the fight against cancer, no matter how strong you are, isn't one you can take on alone. >> a long time ago, i was the strongest woman in the world. i set over 60 world and american records. i feel that i've done everything that i could to be as healthy as possible. and something still went wrong. i had cancer. it was a tough blow. i just went right into action mode, and once i understood what
4:26 am
cancer treatment centers of america was all about, i knew it was the right fit for me. >> announcer: at cancer treatment centers of america, we develop an integrated treatment plan that's right for you. a dedicated team of oncologists, surgeons, and other specialists deliver advanced cancer treatment, including tomotherapy, cyberknife, and intraoperative radiation therapy. >> at cancer treatment centers of america, we're using intraoperative radiation therapy, or iort, which is radiation treatments which are administered in the operating room at the time of the lumpectomy. we're able to administer this treatment in a matter of two to three minutes as opposed to weeks of conventional, daily external beam radiation. >> announcer: we not only have state-of-the-art technologies but also offer integrative treatment options to help relieve symptoms related to treatment. acupuncture helps reduce anxiety and stress, naturopathic medicine helps decrease side effects, spiritual support helps promote a positive outlook nutrition helps boost the immune

system, and mind/body therapy combines stress management counseling, and relaxation therapies to enhance overall well-being. >> they cultivated an atmosphere where the people that work there love what they do, and they just treat patients like they were the most important patient there. in my mind, that's the way all healthcare should be. >> announcer: if you or someone you love has complex or advanced-stage cancer, call cancer treatment centers of america or go to cancercenter.com now. with five regional locations across the united states -- philadelphia in the northeast, suburban atlanta in the southeast, suburban chicago in the midwest, tulsa in the southwest, and suburban phoenix in the west -- cancer treatment centers of america treats people from all over the country. call or go online to learn about our sophisticated technologies hear about our treatment results and our experienced physicians and clinicians who have dedicated their lives to fighting canr. you'll also learn why over 95% of our patients are satisfied and why our unique approach to

>> woman: the following is a paid presentation for the nuwave precision induction cooktop, brought to you by the makers of the number-one-selling nuwave oven. >> announcer: when you turn on your cooktop, do you really know what the temperature is? no-- you're just guessing. are you too busy to watch what you're cooking? tired of all that burnt food going to waste? worried about your kids getting burned or a loved one starting a fire in the kitchen? well, those problems are a thing of the past. introducing the revolutionary precision induction cooktop from nuwave, the leader in portable induction cooking technology. the nuwave heats up twice as fast, uses up to 70% less energy and is safer than any cooktop.
4:31 am
best of all, the nuwave is the only portable cooktop that gives you precise temperature control with the simple press of a button. professional chefs create great-tasting meals by maintaining the precise temperature for the perfect amount of time. well, now you can get professional results too with the nuwave precision induction cooktop. >> the key to great food is knowing how to control the temperatures of what you're cooking. >> now the p.i.c. is allowing people at home to cook like you can in a restaurant. >> i know that when i turn it on that temperature, it's going to be that temperature. there's no guessing. >> announcer: not only does the nuwave give you precise temperature control, it heats up twice as fast as an electric cooktop. >> i put the water in the pan and turned around and the next thing i knew, it was boiling. >> what amazes me about p.i.c. is how quickly it will heat up. induction technology is just unbelievable. >> announcer: and because there's no flame to catch fire no hot coils to burn you the nuwave precision induction cooktop is the safest cooktop ever invented. look what happens with this egg: the pan is hot, but the cooktop
4:32 am
is not. that's the magic of induction cooking. make pasta in half the time. melt butter with no chance of it burning. melt chocolate to creamy perfection. make sauces with perfect temperature control. >> it's small, it's efficient, it's clean and it's safe. >> announcer: and because it's portable, you can take it anywhere, so it's perfect for buffets and outdoor parties. to tell you more, let's join bob warden and jenny repko at the nuwave test kitchen in chicago. >> let me ask you, do you hate boil-overs and the mess they make in the kitchen? do you hate burnt grilled cheese sandwiches or shriveled-up bacon? >> what about over-fried chicken that's all greasy, or dried-out oatmeal, overdone pork chops or charred steak? >> well, what if i was to tell you that instead, you could now have perfect grilled cheese sandwiches, perfectly browned evenly every single time? >> all that cheese is melted in there, so delicious. >> perfectly melted. and i could have perfectly grilled steaks set at 350 degrees that give me a
4:33 am
perfect medium rare steak or however you like it and it's never going to burn. perfect pork chops, and not only pork chops... >> right, salmon grilled vegetables, sausage, perfect every time. >> what if i told you, when you fried your chicken, it was going to be fried at the perfect temperature of 375, gently perfectly, crispy, never soaking up too much oil. >> that's hard to do. >> in fact, that's the problem with the old stovetops whether it's gas or electric-- you can turn it up and down, but because you don't have precise control, you're going to get boil-overs. because you don't have precise control, you're going to burn the cereal on the bottom from time to time. and because you don't have precise temperature control, you can't help but burn a steak or a pork chop on your stove. you see, you're not the bad cook in the kitchen. the stovetop is the bad cook in the kitchen. >> that's right, and those days of bad cooking are over, thanks to the fine folks here at nuwave, makers of the number-one-selling countertop oven in the world. >> well, they've done it again.
4:34 am
you're looking at the new wave in stovetop cooking. now, this ingenious invention will make your life a whole lot easier in the kitchen and a whole lot shorter and a lot more fun. we're going to show you how and why every meal-- breakfast snacks, lunch, dinner, grilled steaks, fondues and buffets-- will be made perfectly every time. because now, for the first time, you can precisely control the cooking temperature. >> announcer: now you can live well for less with the nuwave precision induction cooktop. it's the most energy-efficient way to cook. the nuwave p.i.c. uses induction technology. the secret is an internal series of copper coils. these coils generate a magnetic field within your metal pots and pans. the magnetic field causes invisible molecules to begin vibrating rapidly, creating heat, so the cookware itself heats the food. >> one of my passions are butter sauces. and one of the challenges of cooking a butter sauce is that if you get it too hot,
4:35 am
you know, over 135 degrees it breaks down. if you get it too cool it congeals. the beauty of the nuwave p.i.c. is that i can control the temperature exactly and keep the sauce for an extended period of time. that's such an added bonus for a professional cook and a home cook. >> let me show you this unusual pan. bob, what did we do here? >> well, we actually cut a pan and cut a section out, because in here you can see we have cereal rapidly boiling, right? >> boiling away. >> i can put my hand right there. >> it's amazing. move your hand. i'm going to put an ice cube right there. it's not melting. >> because all of the energy is going into cooking your food. there's nothing wasted anywhere outside of the pan, so this is perfectly cool. so wipe that ice cube off there. >> o.k., i've got a cloth right here. watch this, i'll take this ice cube, wipe it up. i'm using a paper towel on a burner. there's no fire, there's no flame, so it's so safe. >> and the minute you put the pan back on it starts boiling right again. >> wow. >> now, because we're cooking without fire, jenny,
4:36 am
i'm going to take a sheet of play money and put it between the p.i.c. and the pan. instantly it starts boiling again. >> have you ever seen anything like that? cooking through paper? >> so now we're cooking far more efficiently, we're saving 40- to 50% of the energy. >> right. >> isn't that amazing? >> announcer: seeing is believing. look what happened when the nuwave p.i.c. was put to the test on the streets of san francisco. >> all right, this is gonna blow your mind. this is the precision induction cooktop, and it is portable, eco-friendly and it saves you a lot of money, saves you a lot of time. >> wow. >> cooking time is cut in half. do you see that the water's boiling there? >> yeah. >> the great thing about induction cooking is it only heats the part of the pot that is magnetic, so everything else stays cool, so watch this. ah! [group exclaims] o.k., everybody, put your hands on it. >> isn't it hot? >> no, it just heats the magnetic part of the pot. this is at 110. you can leave it at 110 and it won't get gloppy, it won't get stale, it won't harden. >> and you don't have to be a

4:52 am
375 degrees, especially when you're using vegetable oil. we want to hold that perfect temperature, so lookit here. we have a probe in here, we set this to 375 degrees. it says 375 degrees. our chicken is frying gently it's not going to burn. >> here on my burner-- it's a typical electric coil under here... >> i can see jenny's been cooking over here. >> this is what happens. it's not safe. and not only is it not safe, i have no idea what the temperature is-- i'm just guessing. >> when you get that really good fried chicken at one of those fast food chicken places it's because they have a very expensive deep fryer they've set it at 375 degrees, they can use that oil all day long without it burning. well, now you have that precise control at home with the precision induction cooker. let me give you an example. in the test kitchen, we cooked over 200 pieces of chicken and this is what the oil looked like. >> it looks like it just came out of the bottle. >> and this is breaded chicken, right? here we cooked just 20 pieces of chicken on a gas stove same results would have been on an electric stove-- you'd guess. you set it someplace between medium and medium-high you don't know. the minute it smokes, it's gone,
