4:01 am
give you the one thing those with complex or advanced-stage cancers need more than anything else -- hope. hope that there could be a different way, a better way that could make them believe in tomorrows again. and though our heroes begin their journeys in different parts of the country, they will all pass through the doors of cancer treatment centers of america -- a place that never gives up, a place where they do things differently, where clinical expertise state-of-the-art technology, and integrative treatment options provide patients with treatment plans they, themselves, have a say in. taking command of their own treatment -- that's what fighters do, and if there's anyone who knows about fighting cancer, it's rod echols -- a young man married to the love of his life, a dad dedicated to raising his children... >> daddy! yes! >> announcer: ...a person who has just too much living left to do.

4:03 am
serious look on his face [sighs] with some pictures and said that he found something that he's pretty sure that it's cancer. >> the first you think about is your wife and your kids and your family. you think about what would life be like for them without you. >> announcer: with his family in mind, rod had surgery immediately to remove the cancer. after the surgery, they discovered the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. he was told he needed a second surgery that he felt was too invasive. >> and it came back after my follow-up that i needed a second surgery. and that's when i said i need a second opinion. >> announcer: rod got that second opinion at cancer treatment centers of america, a hospital that focuses on treating complex and advanced-stage cancers. >> walking into cancer treatment centers of america, we both felt like, "we're here. we're in the right place. it's really gonna be okay now." >> announcer: rod and keisha met with his entire care team, that included dr. christian hyde, a radiation oncologist. >> rod came in with a pretty advanced cancer, and it had
4:04 am
spread into some lymph nodes in the area. and i remember thinking, "he's just like me." almost the same life circumstances as far as having kids and raising a family. he just happens to have cancer. >> announcer: rod's care team reviewed his case and presented him with some options. >> we combined chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery in order to shrink the tumor so that the surgeon could take it out in one complete piece. >> announcer: this approach allowed the surgery to be minimally invasive and gave rod a choice he was comfortable with. >> i feel like this was the right way for me, the right treatment for me, the right process for me to go through. >> announcer: in addition to chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, rod's treatment plan included naturopathic medicine and nutrition to help him stay healthy during treatment and keep up with his family's busy schedule. >> nutrition plays a very big role in cancer treatment. things that i will do is help to guide them through the types of food to eat for a balanced diet and also strategies to help if
4:05 am
he's having some type of side effect that may be compromising his nutritional status. rod's treatment has actually been great. he hasn't had that many side effects. >> i was able to go through chemo and radiation at the same time and go to work on the same day. it was active, and it was also you know, a way for me to feel normal. >> rod continued to work full time during his treatment. i don't know how, 'cause some days, you know, were rough days, but he just was a trouper. i really respect the guy, 'cause he didn't complain and he didn't slack and he didn't skip. he just said, "we got to do this, and i'm gonna do it." and he did it. >> announcer: after his second surgery and follow-up chemotherapy, rod and keisha sat down with dr. george daneker his surgical oncologist, to find out the results. >> this is your pre-operative scan, so you can see where we connected things back together right there. this looks good. this was connected.
4:06 am
none of this contrast leaked out. i mean, the reality is that you're so healthy it'll heal beautifully, so that's the advantage. we were able to really do a very complete and precise operation and it's really extremely satisfying for all of us that rod has done well and he continues to do well. my hope is that rod will be able to live a normal life, that the effects of his treatment will be minimum, that he will be able to enjoy his wife and his family just like anybody can. >> announcer: with his scans looking good, rod will continue with his treatment plan. back at home, he's enjoying spending time with his wife and children. >> the kids and the family motivated me -- not letting them see me down, just being positive and taking control of the situation and not letting it have control over me. >> ride 'em, cowboy! [ laughs ] >> i may be tired, exhausted but as soon as i wake up in the morning, it's like, "make it a great day."
4:07 am
>> [ smooches ] rod's diagnosis changed my perspective in that you have to enjoy those little things. don't sweat the small stuff. the experience has definitely made us stronger as a couple. to see him, oh, go through this with the strength that he has has been wonderful for me to see. >> cancer treatment center of america had everything under one roof. it's perfect. i know that everyone there has my best interests at heart. it makes you feel like you're a part of the family. i think this whole process of going through cancer has given me a different outlook and a different take on life. it's a new normal for me right now, but i know there's a light at the end of the tunnel. >> announcer: when you're fighting cancer, every day counts, every decision counts, and the choice of who helps you in that fight can be the most important decision of all. >> my whole world just, like stopped -- shut down.

4:14 am
treatments of the less-toxic chemo." and i was very happy with that. and i said, "are you confident about that?" she goes, "yes. very confident." >> most of the time, the treatment options are doing surgery followed by either chemotherapy and radiation together versus the spreading of treatment. so, what we decided was chemotherapy first and then radiation therapy. >> we gave her five weeks of external radiation and also something called brachytherapy. brachytherapy is actually internal radiation, and it allows us to give more radiation without causing damage to the surrounding structures. >> announcer: although most patients are exhausted from their treatment, melanie wanted to stay active. >> she's doing an extraordinary amount of activity, so she really needed a lot of support nutritionally, both to keep those activities up, which she did all throughout her treatment, and also to keep her body in shape for the treatment. >> announcer: melanie was able to continue her athletic training throughout her
4:15 am
treatment, which kept her in shape for future competitions. >> three or four months after i got home from radiation, i competed in my first triathlon. i got third place. by july, i had my fastest time ever. i got first place, and so... cancer treatment centers of america and the people who treated me -- they helped me be able to do that type of performance. >> all right. thanks, my dear. >> announcer: it's been six months, and melanie is back for a checkup. >> this woman got bike maps for me so that i could bike when i was doing radiation. and she went out of her way to go get them. >> announcer: after her scans, melanie hears the results from her oncologist, dr. shrestha. >> the c.a.t. scan of the chest is normal. there's no disease. nothing new. c.a.t. scan of the abdomen and pelvis -- everything looks fine. no evidence of disease at this time. >> fantastic. >> okay? nothing new. >> yay! >> it's nice to be cancer-free one more time, so it's like peace of mind for six more months. iggy, pick a number between 200 and 220. >> 210. >> announcer: back in portland

4:21 am
a chest scan revealed a mass growing between terry's heart and lungs. his local doctor scheduled a biopsy. a couple of days later, he got the results. >> it's my dad's birthday and i got a call from the hospital and it said, "hey, terry. just want to let you know we got your results back in. you do have diffuse large b-cell lymphoma." first thought that come to my mind was, you know, how is my family gonna deal with this? >> it was a shock. i tell everybody, it's like a sledgehammer hitting you in the stomach. >> you know, you're trying to assure your child that it's gonna be okay. but you don't know, yourself. >> announcer: terry was facing a devastating lymphoma diagnosis and turned to his parents for help. the sanders immediately began researching cancer treatment options. >> and i said, "lord just lead us. show me where we need to go. and i started searching and cancer treatment center just
4:22 am
kept popping up. and i said, "this is where we need to take him." >> announcer: after a year of traveling around to different doctors, the sanders decided that having all treatment under one roof was exactly what they were looking for. cancer treatment centers of america in tulsa arranged for terry and his parents to be there within a week. >> when i got there, i was shocked because on my appointment time everybody was in the same room waiting on me. that was a turning point. you're part of the team. you may be the patient, but you're just as integral as the next person standing there next to them. >> announcer: terry met with his team of doctors, including his oncologist dr. ritwick panicker. >> terry sanders is a young man in his 30s who was diagnosed with primary mediastinal b-cell lymphoma. it's a disease in which the lymph nodes in front of our heart enlarge and become malignant. fortunately for terry, we do
4:23 am
have a lot of weapons against this type of cancer. >> announcer: terry's plan included chemotherapy and radiation. however, if he doesn't respond to these conventional treatments, dr. panicker says that terry could be a candidate for a stem-cell transplant. >> we collect the patient's stem cells. then we give the patient high doses of chemotherapy, which eradicates the blood malignancy and all the existing stem cells. after this therapy, the stem cells from the patient that were previously collected are infused back. the idea is that the normal or good cells will return, whereas the malignancy will not return. >> you ready? >> come on with it. >> when i get off work, i get my treatment. and by monday i was back at work and i was feeling good about things again. >> love you. >> announcer: terry has been going through chemotherapy

treatments every couple of weeks for three months. >> last chemo. >> last chemo. >> announcer: now he's back at cancer treatment centers of america and sits down with dr. payne, his radiation oncologist to view the results of his latest scans. >> okay, so, this tells the whole story. this is november and this is a couple weeks ago -- january 31st. >> that's a good sign. >> so, it's gone. he's done well. looking at his pet scan, the one that he had before therapy showed a large tumor right in the middle of his chest. the one he had after the four or five cycles of chemotherapy, that was gone. things have to be a certain size to show up on the pet scan, so there still may be some active cells there. so, radiation is mainly used as a type of insurance to make sure we are able to kill cells that we don't see. >> announcer: terry will continue his treatment plan, but for now his scans are clear. >> it's great. it's great news. i don't really know how to put it in words. >> announcer: back at home
4:25 am
the sanders are enjoying the outdoors, going to church, and just spending time with family and friends. >> i am going to get better. i'm gonna grow my hair back out. 4:37 am
workout that delivers results like these. shaun uses focus interval training to compress an hour-long workout into 25 minutes. you work one muscle group at a time. when that muscle gets tired, you move on to the next. abs, then the thighs, biceps hips, triceps, glutes. but there's no rest and no water breaks. every second counts. >> that's how you get maximum results in minimum time. >> where does this guy come up with this stuff? how does he create this insane 25-minute workout that does this in just 25 minutes? i'm 31 years old, and i've lost 43 1/2 pounds doing t25 in 10 weeks. it's not easy. it's made to make you push, and it's made to make you push yourself as hard as you can, and i know i did. >> come on! this is your focus! you want to step into this 25 minutes? you can do it. all you need to do is have the focus. >> just under a minute and a half left. pushing as hard as i can.

the best part about this workout is when shaun t. calls "time." >> time! t25! >> being a new dad, it's hard to find time to exercise. but t25 is perfect for me. i get up, nail my workout first thing in my morning while my son's still sleeping. then, when i get home, my workout is done and i have time to spend with my family. but i know no one is busier than new moms. the gym is out of the question. well, t25 helped these moms get their bodies back right at home. >> i have a baby. i can't go to the gym and work out for over an hour. so 25 minutes seemed ideal during naptime. why not? i lost 29 pounds with my first 10 weeks of t25. so i definitely love the results that i got. actually, i have never had abs like this before. prior to having a baby, they did not look this good, so i never thought i would have abs ever again after having a baby. and they actually look better than before i had him. 25 minutes a day can give you
4:39 am
this. >> taia had a baby. >> yes. >> y'all know taia. and now look at her. >> i'm in way better shape now than i ever have been in my life, and i'm 34 years old. i've had two kids. i've had two c-sections, and people think that it's impossible to lose weight after you have kids, but it's not impossible. i feel like the best version of me that i could possibly be is this right now. >> i'm stressing 25 minutes a day, 'cause if you get this done, the things that will happen to your body and your life can be absolutely unbelievable, and it's all done by you. >> it's brilliant. it's only 25 minutes a day. it's doable. anybody can do it. literally, anybody. you could be really in shape you could be out of shape and still be able to do it. oh, yeah, best shape ever. and people ask me -- they're like, "you're a mom?" yeah, that's what i wanted to hear. i wanted to have that question. "you're a mom? you had a baby?" never again will i go to the gym
4:40 am
and spend hours in there when i can get it done at home while my baby's napping for 25 minutes and be done. >> time! t25, baby! >> less than 10 minutes. >> only 3 minutes left. >> 1 minute. >> 10 more seconds! >> time. time. time. >> announcer: now everyone has time to work out. it's time for focus t25. 25 minutes, five days a week and the space between your sofa and tv. shaun uses focus interval training to compress over an hour-long workout into 25 minutes. you work one muscle at a time. when that muscle gets tired, you move on to the next. abs, then thighs, biceps, hips triceps, glutes. but there's no rest and no water break. every second counts. >> before t25, i weighed 215 pounds. after t25, i weighed 185 pounds. >> announcer: you start with the alpha cycle, five 25-minute

4:46 am
[ grunts ] ...after a workout. i never felt like that at the gym. no one ever gets off a treadmill and goes, "yes!" >> one more time! push! >> i can't believe the results that i got in one round. never in my wildest dreams could i imagine that i would lose 39 pounds. it's just something that happened to someone on tv, and it happened to me, and i just -- i kind of shake my head and just -- i feel like i'm in a dream sometimes. i don't recognize myself. >> time! t25, baby! >> i don't know about you, but i know a lot of people that think they have to go to the gym and work out for an hour or more to get results. but with t25, all you need is 25 minutes to get results like these right at home. >> i was one of those people out there working out at the gym for over an hour five days a week, and it is such a waste of time. with t25, i lost 28 pounds. >> i would never go back to hour and a half workouts in the gym. t25 is the best 25 minutes that i ever experienced.
4:47 am
>> i do feel like hour-long workouts are a thing of the past. after the 10 weeks of t25, i had a huge transformation. i lost 17 pounds, 21 inches. >> half the battle of going to the gym is going to the gym. i started t25 10 weeks ago, and i have lost 42 1/2 pounds. what i really love about the program is i have the personal trainer right there on my television telling me what to do and how to motivate me. >> this is gonna take you to the best 25 minutes of your week. >> i would never have imagined that i could lose 42 1/2 pounds in 10 weeks. when i started this, i thought "oh, maybe i could do 20 or 25." but 42 1/2? that's insane. the moves are intense, but they're not so intense that you're gonna fall over and hurt yourself. i modified almost the whole time. the result i got was astounding. i have never been in as good a shape as i am today. all the hard work was totally worth it. >> 3, 2, 1! time! >> announcer: it's time for t25. just because it's 25 minutes doesn't mean it's easy.

>> i selected the best moves put them in the right sequence and cut out the rest to save you time. t25 is perfect. >> perfect. >> perfect. >> perfect. >> perfect. >> brilliant! >> i would certainly describe t25 as a perfect workout. i've done hour-and-a-half-long workouts in the gym. nothing i've ever done compares to this 25-minute workout. the results are amazing. you push play, you get the results. i never had abs like i do right now. i spent time in the marine corps and was what i thought was in the best shape of my life. but there's no comparison to the shape that i'm in right now. >> right there! squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze! squeeze the core! make it work! >> i just did 25 minutes of intense workout nonstop. i nailed it. >> i lost 25 pounds and
4:51 am
27 inches off my body. oh, my god. i feel like a new person. i feel amazing. my arms are skinnier. and my waist is back. it was gone for a while. and my hips are more slimmer. and my legs. once you let go of your excuses, you start seeing your results. that's what t25 is all about -- never quit, no excuses, go all the way. >> with t25, you really have no excuses. even if you're new to exercise shaun's included a low-impact modifier, so if any of the moves are too challenging, just modify. go with the modifier or go all out. you still get great results. >> down, up. the best thing about t25 -- you get tired, look what i just did. i went right down to my knees, modifying. you can modify every single movement. if you can't do the jumping, if you can't do the push-ups, if you're not there yet, just
4:52 am
modify, and when you get stronger, you come right back up and go through it. >> even with the modified movements, it was definitely difficult. i definitely was sore everywhere, and i definitely had my heart pumping, and i was sweating a lot, so that's why it's a perfect workout. you get in, you get it done, you sweat like crazy. you get amazing results. i always say, if you look good at the end of your workout you're not doing it right. i'm sweating buckets here. in 10 weeks, just 25 minutes a day, i lost 28 pounds. i lost 4 inches off my waist. my stomach has gotten, like, really, really small. it's really fit, it's really tight. if it was an hour-long workout no way would i wake up an hour earlier to work out. but 25 minutes, i can wake up 25 minutes earlier. it's just, like, three less snoozes on my alarm clock. >> people ask me all the time, "are the results in your infomercials real? are the pictures photoshopped?" well, the results are 100% real, and the photos are not photoshopped. in fact, they're certified unretouched photos by an independent photography expert.
4:53 am
this next guy is jose, and he lost 100 pounds after three rounds of t25. when you get real results, you don't need photoshop. >> i got to a point where i was almost 300 pounds, and i just didn't feel right anymore, so i wanted to do something about that. you know, the guy in the "before" picture -- he was 100 pounds heavier, and i did that to myself, and now, you know, i did this to myself, and it only 25 minutes a day. at the end of 10 weeks, i was down 64 pounds. i couldn't believe the "before" and "after" picture that i posted, and it just made me want to, you know, continue to further these workouts and see if i can, you know, do a little bit better the next time around and the next time around. three cycles through 100 pounds. i never thought i'd lose 100 pounds. >> we're not here just playing around. we want you to get the best results possible. >> you really don't even need that much space. i mean, if you can do a burpee you have enough room to work out. i mean, i'm in better shape now than i was in junior high school when i was 14. i'm 33 now, so that was almost 20 years it took to get this body. i knew it was under there. look, mom, i have abs! my arms are kind of big. i got biceps.
4:54 am
