at hanscom air force base today honoring heroes. that's because two of the six u.s. airmen killed in a plane crash in afghanistan were from that base. 7's byron barnett is there for us now. >> reporter: this is a is the tires time anyone has been killed in action who was stationed here at the hanscom air force base. so as you can imagine, it was a very, very sad day here. they were incredible airmen who served their country voluntarily and lost their lives protecting this great nation . >> reporter: a somber day in bedford where flags were lowered to half staff for two airmen who are among those killed when their plane went down in jalalabad, afghanistan . this is a devastating day for the u.s. air force and for hand come air force base. our hearts are heavy with sorrow as we grief with and for the families of these brave airmen . >> reporter: the superhercules aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from jalalabad air field

all 11 people on board were killed including six u.s. airmen airmen. outside of airport heavy execute after the tragedy. no word on the cause of the crash. the deceased airmen were members of the 66th security force squadron here at hanscom. their mission? to assist with security operations around the globe. base commander says the 130 members of the squadron are being offered counseling . we have a wing man problem where we take care of our own so we are looking at the needs of each and every airmen whether they work in the security force or anywhere on that installation. >> reporter: they were about a month away from the end of their tour . i and hopeful people move as quick as they can to notify families and move as quick as they can to bring them back home home. >> reporter: now the base commander says he expects the names of the doe ceased airmen will be released tomorrow. he says that 13 other members of the squadron are still deployed in afghanistan. that's the story live in bedford

' byron barnett, 7 news. >> anchor: to the campus massacre in oregon. students in class when a gunman opened fire yesterday are talk talking about that horrifying encounter. this as we learned more about the man who shot and killed nine people. brandon gunnoe is here with the latest today. >> reporter: we still don't have a motive but law enforcement officials say the gunman left a multi page note at the shooting scene spouting what they call "a philosophy of hate. he is in a classroom . >> reporter: students who made it out alive after a mass shooting in southern oregon describe the horror . i heard one gunshot and then i looked over outside and people were running a way from the building very to get out of here. there is people running a woman kneed to go . we heard a popping sound and at first we thought it was an engine backfiring . >> reporter: it was no engine. police say chris harper mercer came to the school with six guns fully loaded along with body armor and ammunition.

students accused of messages words of hate shortly after a black student was elected class president. 7's dan hausle is in lowell to tell us exactly what is going on there. dan? what's being done about it? students are all surprised about think because they had a black high school president before, latino high school president so this is rather surprising but these comments are causing a lot of soul searching. i am disappointed like i was sad and my heartbroken . >> reporter: just elected school president couldn't believe it bill a target for rac racist at the messages between classmates. there was an on-line called to impeach him. one at the read rule out blacks and # make lhs great again. he said he confronted one classmate who wrote aboutlying him. i was like, did you really say that you are going to lynch me? he was like yeah i was just pray playing around. i was like that's not even a joking word. lynching is if the a word you use every day .

investigators say the rac racist tents started in a private group but soon everybody in school was reading them. it's sad since obviously we are so diverse and that's like the big thing that we're proud to be at this school . it's ignorant, ignorance at its best. most of the people here aren't like that. it was just like six kids . this incident is heartbreak heartbreaking . >> reporter: school officials say six students have been suspended but they are hoping student body can learn from this. i think we'll come out of it better than we are now. it's one more lesson, one more teaching moment. >> reporter: as school president he has that hope too . yes, we might have failed right now but we're going to get through this and once this is over, we're going to be remember remembered as one of the best classes that ever graduated lowell high. >> reporter: police say they are investigating but they don't think right now this rises to the level of something requiring school officials say they would like to bring together the tent tenters and families. anje said he would like to hear

got the bulldog pride . >> reporter: they cheer for the old colony football league but their coached urged them to make a video for something bigger . to help people that have cancer . we practiced a lot to make sure it was good . they got to practice, tow them to wear ping and we just did it. they are doing the whip and nene dance to whip out cancer . when she cold told me about when i would do the dance i was excited . they are personally motivated . my mom has breast cancer so that is cool we got to do that. it's been sad because my mom has been sick in the hospital. jelly o'brien is overwhelmed . it touched my heart so much much. through this happening you find out that the people in your life are really there for you. the love, the support. it's overwhelming. to say the least. the girls are also selling these bracelets to raise money for the o'brien family.

>> reporter: acombination of northeasterly wind and some rain out there giving thaws raw feel to the air. esty much all afternoon long and that continues this evening, some light rain, even across out outer route 2 up into southern of boston. we've had heaviest rain totals today one to two inches of it back through buzzard waters bay over to the cape and islands, about a half inch in taunton and only a tenth of an inch of rain in boston out through worcester but enough to keep it wet and enough to keep the roads spray out there on the roads. it looks like that will be the trend overnight tonight as more showers continue to lift into southern new england up and over a front that is stuck to the south of us. obviously we're on the colder side that front only 51 in boston right now. 44 degrees in worcester. we have those strong winds that are gusting over 30 miles per hour at the coastline even close to 40 for parts of the cape and islands and that's out of the north-northeast. that on shore wind has created issues along the coastline with some minor coastal floodingp

rain chance over the weekend. highest tomorrow especially in the morning hours. thinking sunday mainly a dry day day. as we begin to wedge some dryer air in place from the north. huge area of high pressure to the north of us and then we have the stream of moisture along the coastline to the south of us and this is going continue a big problem, especially down through the carolinas with some flooding rains because there is a tropical connection of a lot of tropical miss tour getting pulled back into the carolinas upper level low spinning back to the southwest of them and that's going to produce a lot of rain and tremendous of rain north carolina, south carolina perhaps 10 to 15 informs of rain over the weekend in some towns here. here is hurricane joaquin right now close to san salvador ilan. winds 125 miles per hour and the track of the latest one from the national hurricane center dozen keep it off the east bound here over the next several days by hundred miles away. however, the separate system down through the carolina coastline will create the flooding rains and for us, it's that area of high pressure to
