flight crew all kept things so calm despite a difficult situation. live at logan airport, dan hausle, 7 news . >> anchor: a tragedy at sea. search crews say a missing cargo ship sinks with two graduates of the massachusetts maritime academy on board. this ship is the size of two football fields and it went down in hurricane joaquin. there are no signs of life but the coast guard says the search for survivors will continue. 7's steve cooper live in buzzard areas bay with more on the latest information. steve? as you can imagine this has just been such a difficult day here at mass maritime. they began the day students here learning that a graduate of the school was on board that cargo ship and by the end of the day they learned a second graduate of the school was on that ship as well. these are one of those days that mariners fear. >> reporter: the captain that

runs the training ship kennedy at mass march tim academy said everyone is rattled to the core. confirmation from the u.s. coast guard today the massive cargo ship the el faro sank and we've now learned the crew of 33 includes keith griffin and jeffrey in a thighs, both graduates of mass maritime . i suppose there is not a job in the world that doesn't have risk. the sea going life is riskier than most . the 800 foot ship left florida last tuesday headed for puerto rico when hurricane whack on was just a tropical storm. but by thursday trouble near the bahamas. high winds and huge waves. the ship had lost power and was taking on water. communication was lost. the loss of power is catastrophic for a ship . on board 33-year-old keith griffin a 2005 mass maritime grad who recently moved from winthrop to florida along with jeffrey in a thighs a father of three from kingston . the massachusetts maritime

. school officials say they around here to second guess a captain's decision. . there is a hopeful spirit. but it's a reality and sad necessary of the industry that . so no lowering flags tonight, no memorial services here on campus, just a community that is coming together with a lot of hope and praying for a miracle. live in buzz arart bay tonight, . now to bragging news in waltham a. a crazy crash on a city street leaves a van on top of a car. it's amazing that no one was seriously hurt there . apparently one driver was for a while. let's get the story on that. john cuoco was there . kim, that car was coming right here down river street in waltham. the driver said he somehow lost control and that's when he collided with and actually went underneath a van. he ended up right here.

a tow truck taking away this white van after this car collided with it in front of a home on river street in waltham. police say the van was illegally parked. 7 news spoke with the driver who says he simply lost control while on his way to a variety store. he was stuck inside until another person pulled him out. as soon as the bomb happened i start saw smoke and thought i . a man who lives in the home accidents like this . people drive fast up and down the street. last month there was a big accident across the street. always something going on . outside of a few bumps and bruises drivers are expected to be okay . not even a gash. just like little pebbles inside. inside.. that's really it . so the driver has been cri cried for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and unsafe operation of a motor vehicle.

. now to a developing story. crews cleaning up after a central vermont. tonight there is word it could take quite some time to get things back on track. what happened. the train tracks between springfield massachusetts and northern vermont will be out of service for the foreseeable future. vermont's governor believes there is nothing the driver could have done to avoid this collision and it doesn't appear the train was speeding either. a scenic ride through vermont came to an abrupt end when an amtrak train went off the tracks. i saw the car in front of us kind of come up this way. that's when it went down the ditch . the vermonter train de derailed this morning sending an engine and one passenger car over an embankment and into a creek . next thing we knew there was lick we kind of swerved to the left then swerved to the rate and we were all going you oh . >> reporter: one person was seriously hurt and thrown flown to a trauma center in new hampshire. all of the most able-bodied people kind of adopted an older person and got them all the way

down the train tracks and out . this passenger said he found the train conductor who appeared to be in shock . i through him on my back of he was, he held on to my neck like this and i just toll him to hold on . vermont's governor says rocks from a ledge fell on to the train tracks and he calls the wreck a freak of nature . there is no belief that there is any wrongdoing here. a freight train wept through late last night an passed without any incident. the ledges had to have fallen in the last several hours. >> reporter: in addition to getting the train out of there crews will have to rebuild tracks and also clean the diesel fuel that leaked into a nearby creek. live in the control room, till caputo, 7 news . we are following more news today. dangerous drive at a mall in salem, new hampshire. police woke up a man who was un unconscious they say in the parking lot and they say the guy jumped up, hit the gas and slammed into a parked car and a fire hydrant. officers determined that the man

this morning alexander dimaggio faced a judge. he is charged with reckless driving, dui and drug possession possession. voice your choice coverage now. a primary push in new hampshire. the two female candidates in the race for the white house with strong messages for voters. hilary clinton and carly fiorina are working hard to gain ground in the latest polls. especially in new hampshire. on the democratic side vermont senator bernie sanders leads clinton by 9 points, 48% to 39%. virtually unchanged from a month ago when sanders was ahead 49% to 38%. again this is just a new hampshire poll right here. on republican side criminally fiorina is gaying ground on donald trump's lead and is slinking there. the new nbc news poll shows trump holds a five point advantage over fiorina. a month ago trump's lead over the nearest competition in new hampshire was 16 points. 7's byron barnett live in manchester, new hampshire with what both candidates said to voters today. byron? well, hillary clinton and the carly fiorina crisscrossed the state here in new hampshire.

at one point they ended up apart. hillary clinton will went on the attack against some republicans in congress while fiorina saved her attacks for clinton. criminally fiorina campaign campaigning in new hampshire focusing more on the other female presidential candidate than on her male republican rifles. the truth is, most of you in your hat of hearts really want to see me debate hilary clinton. i know it's true . a says while she admires hillary clinton as a woman, she attacked the former secretary of state on her e-mail controversy and the benghazi investigation. i think she has put our national security at risk and i think she lied about her e-mails and server and her involvement and what really happened in benghazi. in a live nationally televised town meeting clinton reminded everyone that she apologized and took responsibility for her e-mails. but she also attacked the republican controlled benghazi committee that's been investigating her.

>> anchor: milder disease ahead our temperatures will recover and we'll get near 70 degrees by the middle of week. we stay mostly dry. the only exception will be friday with a few showers in the forecast. late breezes too. breezes lightning up thankfully along the coastline. this upper level low has been a nightmare for the carolinas. it is really steered away joaquin from the eastern seaboard but unfortunately joaquin imparted a lot of moisture into this weather system so it looked innocuous, it looked weak in fact but it's ability to make rain was incredible. we had rainfall over the last 24 hours of just four or five inches but three day totals going become to friday were incredible. over 24 inches in some cases across south carolina. boston at 57 degrees.

57 in norwood and bedford right now clouds did collect. joaquin is far offshore but a little plume of moisture in the mid levels of the atmosphere did kind of sneak away from the england too. it's kind of like joaquin waving to us. no rain came out of those clouds but they will break up tonight beautiful day. if you have plans outside, you planned right. if you want to be outside, it's a great i did for it. lots of sunshine, blue sky, some clouds scraping by cape cod from time to time so we may go partly cloudy, we may go mostly cloudy. the temperatures will be coolest there in the lower and mid 60's elsewhere. making a run at 70. why don't we try in nashua and lawrence and billerica and framingham. we should make it in fitchburg and level inster. a little bit short of that in boston though falling by five degrees short of it in boston with a sea breeze coming into town so the winds you know are light when that happens. wednesday we should knock the sea breeze out and go forward near 70 degrees. the foliage looking good across northern new england.
