>> this is 7 news at noon. >> christa: breaking news at noon today. investigators at a building in everett right now looking for clues to see if a fire was deliberately set. they have been at the scene for several hours so far this morning. >> jadiann: cheryl fiandaca is live with what we know. >> reporter: investigators are in everett right now. these are pictures from sky 7.

we know that the state fire marshal is looking into whether a car fire is a case of arson. right now we do not believe there are any reports of injuries. but you can see crews near the billing and near a vehicle. looking for clues in this case. we have crew on the way to the scene. we will bring you the very latest as we get it. i'm cheryl fiandaca, 7 news. >> christa: also breaking right now... >> as you defend and build your country, today is a reminder that the united states keeps our commitments. >> christa: president obama making a major announcement about the future of u.s. troops serving right now in afghanistan. the president says the u.s. will keep 6,500 troops in the country. >> jadiann: yeah: the deployment will last through 2017. nancy chen joins us now with more on the breaking story. >> reporter: jadiann, that is major turnaround for president obama. he originally pledged to bring the u.s. military mission in afghanistan to an end next year. president obama now saying he will keep nearly 10,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan through

most of next year. that decision comes as the taliban has made recent gains in the country and military officials have also just requested more support to push them back. a short time ago, the president addressed the american people and acknowledged america's wariness. >> afghan forces are still not as strong as they need to be. as you are well aware, i do not support the idea of endless war. i have repeatedly argued against marching into open-ended military conflicts that do not serve our security interests. yet, given what's at stake in afghanistan and the opportunity for a stable and committed ally in partner with us in preventing the emergence of future threats, and the fact that we have an international coalition, i'm firmly convinced that is we should make this extra effort. >> troop levels will be brought down to 5,500 when the president leaves office in

president obama's successor to decide how to proceed. >> christa: a local university has revoked one of comedian bill cosby's honorary degrees. the board of trustees at tufts university has voted to take away his doctor of arts degree and another award. he was given that degree back in 2000. this is just the latest now in a string of revoked degrees at colleges across the country. the comedian has been accused women now. >> jadiann: turning to the weather now. a relatively warm week so far. we are in for a cool week. jeremy. >> jeremy: that is correct. right now, 57 in boston. 57 is a popular number at this time. fitchburg, 57. jaffrey, at 52. mostly sunny skies. a great fall day. with lots of sunshine. not as windy as yesterday. temps this afternoon a little bit cooler than yesterday. these numbers actually, where we should be this time of

year. upper 50's and low 60's. the city this afternoon, around 60. big rick can, 61. nashua at 59. tomorrow morning, clouds. a few sprinkles tomorrow morning. still relatively mild tomorrow. with temperatures into the middle 60's. but there is much colder air headed our way for the end of the weekend. with temperatures on saturday mid-50's. temperatures on sunday, only in the 40's. >> christa: a southbridge teacher in trouble with the law today. he is accused of sharing inappropriate images with a student. officers say the 21-year-old was taking explicit pictures of himself and ed ising them to a teenager. today that teacher faced a judge. let's go live to jennifer eagan outside the courthouse in dudley. that teacher arrived to face a judge earlier. >> reporter: christa, he was raigned earlier this morning, too. police say the student was in this teacher's classroom and that this all started over facebook. prosecutors say the 22-year-old joseph zuniga

himself to one of his students two separate times. police say it began last fall when the former english teacher friended a 16-year-old student on facebook. then used messenger to send the graphic pictures to the boy. >> a teacher is put in a position of trust. it's sickening to even hear allegations like this. >> reporter: zuniga sent other graphic images to the boy last year and sent the pictures again this past august. >> to the best of our knowledge, the student had never communicated back to the teacher. never said anything. just remained silent. there was never a response. >> reporter: school resource officer overheard students talking about the pictures in the hallway. officials in southbridge moved quickly and fired him. after his arraignment today, he posted bail. he hid his face and his family she'lled him as he left court: the judge set conditions for zuniga's bail. they include staying away from southbridge high school, the

and not using social media. >> jadiann: more news today. the trial of a danvers teenager accused of raping and killing his teacher is now on hold. the judge will decide if phillip chism should undergo a psychological evaluation which could last up to 20 days. jury selection has been suspended for now. this week, a psychologist says she saw the 16 yearly banging his head on the floor and he refused to come out of his cell on wednesday. chism is accused of killing a high school teacher back in 2013. he faces life in prison if convicted. >> christa: three people from westport are behind bars now, charged in a horrible case of animal cruelty. police say their home was filled with fleas and animal waste. officials came across two deceased dogs. one in a trash bag. the other in a closet. along with the dead lizard. a 17-year-old is also facing the same charges in the case.

>> jadiann: dozens of families are back in their homes after a gas line ruptured and forced them toe advantage wait in medfield. the gas company says the crew hid the line with a piece of heavy equipment. and static electricity sparked the fire on wednesday. the flames were so intense, they melted the power lines above. >> the flames were catching the wires. the wires that were across the street. they were on fire. so those have all come down. >> just a massive ball of fire. >> the gas line is now fixed. crews from the gas company went home to relight everyone's appliances last night. >> christa: now the race for the white house this afternoon. it is mother of glen doherty is among those angered by a new anti-hillary clinton ad that features the victims of the benghazi attack. a political action committee paid for the 30-second ad that shows the grave of christopher stephens, u.s. ambassador. it shows pictures of doherty

and the two other americans killed during that attack in 2012. doherty's mother telling the "washington post" she think it is ad is horrifying. christopher stephens' mother says she would sue if she could. pro-choice demonstrators planning to attend donald trump's campaign rally in tyngsborough. trump will speak with supporters at tyngsborough high school coming up tomorrow night. this is his second time campaigning here in massachusetts. you may remember he attended a fund-raiser at car dealer ernie boch jr.'s house in august. >> jadiann: two-time basketball champion and reality tv star lamar odom is continuing to fight her his lifer in a las vegas hospital. this is after being found unconscious two days ago at a nevada brothel. and now we are learning new details about his condition. >> he is like, almost not breathing. >> jadiann: employees called 911 in a panic. >> he has blood coming out of

his nose. white stuff coming out of his mouth. >> jadiann: odom was found in a v.i.p. suite, on the bed, fully clothed, still unresponsive. it took four men to carry him to the ambulance. the situation is being treated as a drug overdose. two days later, odom's condition hasn't improved. odom has suffered brain damage and one stroke. he is in a coma hooked up to a ventilator and doctors found various drugs in his system. inside a local medical center, odom is surrounded by those closest to him. including estranged wife khloe and other kardashian family members who rushed to be by his side. kobe bryant is said to have left the game early to be with odom. and to have stayed since. other friends and acquaintances stopped by as well, including the reverend jesse jackson. >> khloe was there. and two of his close friends. i was able to go in and see him and hold hands and say a

prayer. >> jadiann: the hash tag prayers for lamar is trending on social media. it seems drugs were, indeed, a factor. >> moving forward, doctors will not know the extent of brain damage until odom wakes up, if he does. meanwhile, the sheriff says she is cubbing her own investigation. >> christa: a parole board says oscar pistorius will be released from prison and moved to house arrest now. the board canceled its initial decision to go ahead and release him back in august. pistorius served nearly a year of a five-year sentence for manslaughter for killing his girlfriend. >> jadiann: coming up, a big surprise during an interview with a skunk? a freak-out during an on-air prank. >> christa: a local student buys google.com.

department are investigating draftkings and similar web sites. >> jadiann: this comes after several complaints of problems with the bomb lar site. nancy chen here with the new details. >> reporter: that is story we have been following very closely. investigators want to determine if web sites such as draftkings and fanduel violate federal law. the "wall street journal" reports agents from boston's f.b.i. office have been contacting people who played fantasy sports on draftkings. those agents are asking them about their experiences with the web site. those drafts can kings and fanduel gained the attention of investigators after an employee admitted to releasing sensitive information about the site's biggest contest. that same emproi ye won $350,000 in a contest on fanduel. this is during week three of the n.f.l. season. fanduel and draftkings have been working on each other's sites. the attorney general's office

and the investigation is onright now. into why all this happened in the first place. we are talking about autumn avenue in everett. all this unfolding just after 5:00 this morning. officials say they want to know who torched the car in a driveway. then tried to set a two-family home on fire here in the city. again, neighbors say they woke up to what sounded like a loud explosion. then they saw flames copping from the driveway. no one was hurt here. someone set a ford fusion on fire and then tried to set a house on fire using gasoline. two small children, we are told, live up on the second the landlords of this property. one resident described waking up to the smell of smoke and then seeing huge flames out the window. >> yeah. i ran to wake up my cousin, grab the phone. >> reporter: what did it look like when you looked out? >> at first, it was a big ball of yellow fire coming out of the windows.

are controversial. he says they are the right thing to do. especially in mind of the fact state have tripled over the past few years. the governor came to the podium on crutches and he outlined a couple of the provisions. if passed, the bill would empower doctors and other medical professionals to involuntary last... involuntarily commit addicts for up to 72 hours if they are a danger to themselves or others. only judges can commit people with addiction issues as it stands now. baker also thinks doctors should prescribe first-time patients a 72-hour smile of painkillers no more. >> i'm a health care guy. i have lots of friends and lots of colleagues in the health care world. i am astonished by the casual nature and the casual attitude they find when i talk to them. about these medications and

that has got to change. >> reporter: the bill calls for a number of changes. including education for public school coaches and parents. it would end the practice of sending female addicts to the women's prison at mci framingham. he says there is funding in place to change that practice which has been going on for 28 years. the governor set up a panel to study these issues. in june, they came up with a list of more than 60 recommendations. live at the statehouse, i'm jonathan hall, 7 news. >> reporter: you can see mickey mouse curtains and colorful toys in the worcester apartment home. it is where 22-year-old chantal nguyen lived with her five-year-old son. >> he seemed pretty happy.

staff at the school noticed he was bruising and limping. they called an ambulance to take him to a local hospital. the department of children and families was notified and took custody of the boy who according to court paperwork had significant trauma to his entire body, including his head, face, arms, legs, buttocks and lower back. when police confronted the mom, they say she admitted she saw the pruzs but couldn't tell them. she never reported it. while this neighbor says he never heard or saw anything suspicious, other witnesses told detectives the boy had bruises at different times. and was in severe pain from these injuries. he could not walk and had to be carried up and down the stairs. the mother blamed her male roommate for causing the black and blue marks. but because she allowed the roommate to be around the child and baby-sit and didn't protect her son, they arrested the mom for allowing her child to get hurt. kimberly bookman, 7 news.

>> jadiann: boston police released more details in a 1992 cold case murder they recently solved. low that bruce was found dead in her south end home 23 years ago. investigators hadn't been able to find her killer until this january. a d.n.a. sample found at the crime scene matched up with a sample found in boston. >> christa: more news now. john kerry is set to head to the middle east after a night u.s.-israeli... israeli-palestinian tensions to a boiling point. palestinian man running through a security checkpoint with a knife on wednesday. hours after that, another knife attack. an israeli woman hurt. a flynnion attacker dead. israel is now calling up additional security forces and sealing off parts of palestinian neighborhoods.

palestinians have died in the aknacks recent weeks. >> reporter: it's been almost one week since spencer stone was stabbed outside a nightclub in sacramento. witnesses say stone got into a fight while trying to defend a woman he didn't even know. as he threw punches, one man came from behind and stabbed him several times on the side. >> we still are reviewing a lot of video from the area and we are hoping that that will prove positive for the case. >> reporter: police released new pictures that capture the get-away car. stabbing. the footage was taken an hour before the crime occurred. >> the photo depicts a 2009 and 2012 dark-colored toyota camry. we believe our suspects are
