"early today" starts right now. good morning, everybody. i'm betty nguyen. we saw them go head-to-head for the title of vice president in 2012, now both men could be on their way to major political fights of their own. tracie potts is in washington. he laid out a set of conditions. sglrks >> reporter: elwith, well, he did. after boehner announced he was stepping down and paul ryan's name came up and he said he wasn't considering this and in a meeting with the republican cong r conference he said there was a call to leadership and said it would be a mistake not to run. and his conditions are first of all, that they need to be a proposition party not an opposition party.

it's not so easy for smaller groups within the party to get rid of the house speaker. he says they need to unify now and not after an election for a speaker and he's not going to give up family time. so, ryan, heeding the call from republicans as speaker but going into this somewhat reluctantly. >> this is not a job i've ever wanted, sought. i'm in the job i've always wanted in congress. i came to the clungz conclusion that this is a dire situation. >> reporter: jason of utah announcing that he will drop out and support ryan, so the next question becomes when are they going to v these elections. because everything was in such disarray. >> we'll see how it plays out.

and in arizona a funnel cloud was captured west of phoenix. that is ominous looking. >> it's a tornado. it would be considered a tornado if it actually made contact with the ground. that was a close one. this storm system was going to plague us again and definitely a flood threat over the next three days. and this will slowly be tracking across west texas during the day and linger over texas for the next three days. this is the same one that plagued california like three days ago. it took a slow jog across the southwest. and amarillo and san angelo. i don't think we'll see many tornados. but we will have more pictures of what we just showed you of the large hail and possibility of damaging wind gusts. the european model is predicting a texas sized soaker.

good morning, everybody. officially wednesday. middle of the week. we have lots to get to here on "7 news today in new england." >> jadiann: good morning to you. here are some of the stories we're working on. overnight, a new york city police officer shot and killed on duty. the commissioner says he was chasing a suspect who stole a bike when he was shot in the head. >> christa: a quincy couple on the run suspected in a series of bank robberies along the east coast. police across the country are looking for them. they've hit banks in at least three states. >> jadiann: the vatican is strongly denying a report in an italian newspaper that pope francis has a brain tumor.
