incompetence in foreign policy and that hillary clinton's role in that, if any, should be scrutinized. we will watch for the next several hours. >> christa: all right, thank you. we are also tracking breaking news overseas. an american killed in a u.s. military operation to rescue hostages in iraq. let's go to dan hausle with details. dan? f >> reporter: well, christa, this operation, according to a defense official was to rescue kurdish hostages in northern iraq. this mission carried out overnight in an area west of kirkuk. one u.s. official says the american soldier was killed in a fire-fight at the scene. the uncle of one kurdish prisoner says he was told 70 hostages were freed by american para-troopers. u.s. officials are speaking on condition of anonymity. this operation has not been made public yet. this is the first u.s. soldier killed in action since the u.s. began its offensive against islamic state last year. dan hausle, 7 news. >> christa: all right, dan. thank you.

also here on 7 news: a methuen teenager under arrest. police say that he threatened to shoot up his school. let's head out live to nick el mons in methuen right now. the investigators are crediting another student with copping forward about this. >> yeah. that's right. they say this other student heard about the possible threats and wanted to make sure nothing bad would happen to the school. police say a 16-year-old pulled at least one fellow student... told at least one fellow student he hoped to investigators say the student referenced mass shootings, especially ones in schools and it wasn't just one threat. >> it was in person and it was also some postings. some written text messages. told authorities she was concerned once the suspect reportedly said he also wanted to kill himself. >> this girl possibly saved this child's life.

>> reporter: two homes were searched and police found tactical gear. officers also recovered bullets. but no real guns. >> we don't believe, at any point, there was an imminent danger to somebody at the school. we believe prior to there being the imminent danger, there was an intervention in this case. >> reporter: the arrest happened monday night. parents found out wednesday. some parents were upset they didn't know for 48 hours. the school superintendent says there is a good reason why officials waited. . >> we work hand in hand with the police, waiting for the investigation to be complete. so we would have the correct information to relay to the parents. >> reporter: again, police do not feel there was any imminent threat to any of the students at the school here. as for the suspects, he has undergone a mental evaluation and is due back in court november 2. >> christa: police have arrested two men for carrying

firearms wednesday night. state troopers responded to a 911 call in foxboro after a driver told them a man in a volkswagen pointed a gun at him. police tracked down the vehicle on 95 and tham arrested and charged a 20-year-old and 21-year-old with car rig firearms without a valid license. both men are being held at $10,000 bail. and 7 news turning to your forecast. temperatures rising today. dipping back tomorrow. meteorologist jeremy reiner, i'm thinking of seinfeld here. >> jeremy: right. exactly. upper 60's at this time. boston, 67. norwood, 70 degrees. our normal high is 69. been there, done that this plymouth at 69. on the cape, temps running in the 60's. dew point temperatures have also jumped briefly into the low 50's. especially metro-boston. they do drop off a little bit back in the worcester hills. you may see a little humidity this afternoon.

we are talking ability a cool front that is about to move into new england. this will pop some scattered showers throughout the afternoon. again, not widespread. some of you will go the entire afternoon and not see one drop of rain. you notice the chance of rain, minuscule now. it does briefly jump to 40% midafternoon through the early evening hours. then it drops again this evening. this cool front will deliver much cooler air to new england tomorrow. we will talk more about that in a few minutes. >> christa: inspectors are looked for more damaged hardware inside of the big dig tunnels. repairs are already under way. let's head out live to boston with more on the problem. here is byron barnett. good afternoon, byron. >> reporter: good afternoon. well, you know, this new big dig problem was discovered during a routine inspection in september and now highway crews are trying to determine the exact extent of the problem. now, the issue is the discovery of some cracked nuts in the big dig tunnel system. these are... these nuts are part of the hard way that hold

up the overhead lights. highway officials are reportedly expecting more than 100,000 of these nuts. inspectors have discovered 878 doojed nuts in the ted williams tunnel. 49 have been found in the i-909 connector and i-93 tunnels. now, inspections are not expected to be completed until november. now, the highway administrators say at this point, there is no risk that those lights are going to fall down because in addition to the hardware, the lights also held up by wires. and also, there is no word yet on how much the repairs will cost. live from the statehouse, byron barnett, 7 news. >> christa: new details about the reported sexual assault at bridgewater state university. the original report was unfounded, police are saying. earlier this week, investigators released a sketch of a man described to them by an 18-year-old student, the woman says she met this man through the messaging app. he assaulted her.

will be filed in that case. orange line service back to normal today following a scary scene at haymarket station. service was temporarily suspended when a woman was trapped underneath a train. police are still trying to figure out exactly what caused her to fall. but she was eventually taken to the hospital. forecast police have also arrested a woman in derry for driving intoxicated sunday. they also say she has been arrested for drunken driving eight times. 58-year-old deborah adams allegedly mixed herself a drink and then drove to the store for cigarettes. according to police. they also say her blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit. she is also charged with negligent driving for having an open container of alcohol inside her vehicle. police say a masked man used a large knife and possibly a sword to kill a student and a teacher overseas. at a school in sweden. another teacher and student were seriously injured before

police shot the suspect. he was seriously injured. the attack happened near the school's cafeteria. right now the attacks... or the motive for the attack is still unclear. we will have the latest for the race on the white house. time. the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination. >> christa: vice president joe biden ending weeks of speculation, finally running for president. biden's family, as you may know, has been mourning the loss of their son bo who died of brain cancer back in may. the vice president says even though he won't be a candidate, he will continue to push for the middle class and speak out during the course of this campaign. and c-nbc will host the third g.o.p. presidential primary debate next week. that debate will be held wednesday, october 28. and once again, it will be divided into two tiers. donald trump, ben carson, marco rubio, jeb bush and carly fiorina will each appear on the main stage at 8:00.

to take part in what they are calling random acts of kindness. and then share them on social media by using the hash tag "kindness for colleen." ritzer was killed inside danvers high school back in 2013. the trial of her accused killer is now on hold as he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation. another church going up in flames in st. louis. investigators say now this is the 7th church arson in that area in recent days. in fact, this one happened early this morning at the shrine of st. joseph catholic church. someone set the fire near a door when no one was inside the building. >> a very secluded area, as you can see. there appears to be no video cameras coming in or out of the area. whoever is responsible for this did some research, scouted the area out. and knew that they could get in and get out without possibly being seen. >> reporter: at least six of the arson cases were at predominantly black churches. congregation. officials don't know yet if the fires are connected.

police in mexico say they have arrested six people accused of helping the drug cartel boss known as el chapo escape from prison. officials say the group organized and carried out joaquin guzman's escape. in fact, his brother-in-law is one of the six people now facing charges. guzman broke out of prison back in july and is mexico's most wanted fugitive. britain has agreed to pay nearly $3 million in fines for failing to notify customers who were being charged an extra monthly fee. the settlement with the federal trade commission involves a $7.99 monthly fee added to the bill to lower... for people with lower credit scores. new additions to the texting world. apple releases an update to its operating system. installing new emojis. more than 150 of these characters were included.
