it as a vibration to a rumble to a bang. whatever it was apparently happened below. maybe in the basement of the elementary school here. investigators have more descriptions than explanations as they say they still don't know what caused the big bang. parents came running to the high school, looking for their kids after hearing reports of a big bang in the basement of the elementary school. faculty decided to get the kid out. >> you know, there was a loud noise in the basement. >> reporter: someone pulled the fire alarm, though. making sure everyone knew something was wrong. >> i heard the fire drill. and i was surprised. when i was in the gym. >> reporter: after students were bused over to the nearby high school, investigators tried to figure out what caused the bang. so far, they have found nothing. >> we looked at the electrical. we looked at the gas. we looked at blasting in the area.

communities next to us. observatory. there is nothing at this point that we find to be a hazard in that school. >> reporter: parents seem ruled out. even if no one has a theory about what caused the big bang. >> hopefully, we will be okay. >> reporter: architects are among the last who will be looking at the building. firefighters didn't find any cracks or anything. the architects will be able to do that better to see if there was any settling that caused the bang or as a result of whatever caused the bang. we are still waiting for word from school officials on whether the students will come back to the building tomorrow. dan hausle, 7 news. >> reporter: now turning to the weather. strong winds and heavy rain causing quite a mess this morning. take a look at this. trees coming down, including this one which crushed that car in milton. j.r., it looks like the worst has passed. plus, it's pretty warm out there right now. >> reporter: there is the storm moving away with the

heavy rain and strong winds. now we have busted out into sunshine. there is one more band of some showers back through eastern new york state. this will not be anything like we dealt with overnight last night. this is a cold front moving through eastern new york state. ahead of the front, it is windy. it's warm. temperatures have jumped into the upper 60's and low 70's. actually, even a couple of sprinkles now showing up in the worcester hills. right there. moving quickly off to the north and east. actually, weakening with time. your afternoon will feature windy and warm conditions. look at the rainfall totals last night from the storm and early this morning. worcester, over two inches of rain. hopkinton close to two inches of rain. metro-boston, between one and two inches of beneficial rainfall. falling during the very early morning commute. fvrbs as well as wind. windy conditions at this time. a warm wind. temps this afternoon in the low 70's.

we will talk about this warm afternoon coming up in about 15 minutes. >> right now, a former new hampshire prep school student convicted of sexual assault is facing a judge. 20-year-old owen labrie faces up to 11 years in prison. jonathan hall is live with more in new hampshire on these proceedings. jonathan? >> reporter: hey, jadiann, good afternoon from concord, new hampshire. quite a scene here at the merrimack superior courthouse. this is the area where the judge will sentence the 20-year-old in about an hour and a half. you will hear victim impact statements also. a jury found la brie not guilty of forcible rape. the jury found him guilty of misdemeanor rape. and enticing a child of using a computer. he testified he and a 15-year-old girl fooled around but never had sex when the

incident happened at an elite prep school in may of 2015. his friends testified he told them he did have sex with the girl at st. paul's during a tradition called senior salute where older boys seek out younger girls before graduation. this was a 42-page filing with the court. the attorney has asked the judge for probation, saying owen labrie has suffered enough and will be a registered sex offender for perhaps his whole life. in concord, new hampshire, i'm jonathan hall, 7 news. >> the man accused of making

boston police removed the uxbridge man from the united airlines flight after he allegedly made bomb threats during the boarding process. 7's steve cooper live outside the courthouse. he joins us now with the very latest. >> reporter: this arraignment happening here in east boston a few minutes ago. we can tell you that the suspect, well, his attorney says at most, this is a case of somebody who used a poor choice of words. but before the judge, the judge called this a bomb threat onboard a flight and he says that's a serious charge. do you want to apologize for what happened? no comment on his arrest of making a bomb threat onboard a flight at logan airport. the 55-year-old from uxbridge pleads not guilty in east boston district court. the prosecutors say he told a flight attendant he had a bomb in his carry-on luggage while

an overhead compartment on a united airlines flight that was ready to push back from the gate. >> he was surprised he got it into the compartment. the defendant responded "that's because there is a bomb in there." >> reporter: the attorney says his client told the flight attendant something very different. >> poor choice of words maybe. he said "i have to be careful so this doesn't come out and hit someone like a bomb." prevail. he did not do anything. no passengers on the plane screamed or yelled. >> reporter: campbell has come and gone from the courthouse after posting that $250 cash bail. he hack ordered by the judge not to fly, stay away from all

>> anchor: some breaking news in lowell right now. take a look at live pictures here. student in the courtyard of sullivan middle school here. what we are learning is that they the fire department is on scene checking for the possibility of a carbon monoxide leak. that is what we are hearing as of right now. some students had been complaining of headaches. we are trying to get some more information as to exactly what is going on here if carbon monoxide is the factor. as you can see here, from these live pictures above the

middle school, students sitting on the grass there, students outside of the building here. with fire crews in front of the school. again, this is sullivan middle school. students complaining of headaches here. we will stay on top of this and continue to follow this information. hopefully, we can get some more things confirmed throughout the afternoon here. >> jadiann: yeah. that's right. we want to talk about this wild weather we have had today. finally, calming down out there? >> jeremy: right now it is warm. look at the numbers. 71 in town. nashua, 73. hyannis, 68. some wind out there. nothing like we experienced overnight. many cities and towns had gusts over 30. occasionally, gusting between 40-50 miles per hour overnight. right now winds are gusting about 20-25 miles per hour. this will be the case throughout the afternoon. these numbers here typically, does not lead to wind damage. so you have an afternoon that starts with a mix of clouds and sunshine. there is another little band of rain shower activity marching into new england. this is actually a cold front. the leading edge of cool air.

eventually, this will sweep through southern new england with a renewed chance of brief passing showers. you can see on the doppler radar right now, the rain moving away from new england from this morning. there is a couple of showers that have been trying to pop up in the worcester hills. they are fast-moving. they are very weak. >> you get tagged by one of these, it is mainly a case of bad blood... bad luck, in all honesty. this will move into the berkshires and then sweep afternoon. showers this afternoon. again, they will be scattered and they will be tied to that brief little line. it won't be like hit and miss all afternoon. a window of opportunity, if you will, midafternoon. and even into early this evening. about a 10% chance of an isolated shower or sprinkle. which, if you are heading to the patriots game, factor that tail-bogaertsing. here is the cold front here. behind the front, the numbers are in the 50's where. year.

temps saturday evening, mid-40's. no wind. >> jadiann: a rhode island native talking about his shark scare off the coast of hawaii. >> anchor: he is in boston after having surgery. >> reporter: colin cook returns to new england a changed man. he is the survir of a shark attack. his left leg had to be amputated. anged parts of two of his fingers. he is still here to tell his story. >> everything is so surreal. >> reporter: cook moved to oahu four years ago to be closer to the ocean. so he could surf and be in the water every day. then just weeks ago, he was sitting on his board waiting for a wave. >> out of nowhere, a huge shark just slams me. and pulls me under. >> reporter: he had seen sharks in the water before, he had a hard time grasping what was happening to him. >> i saw a huge shark on my leg. i kind of pushed off of my left hand. my left hand got mangled up.

>> anchor: welcome back. with all the heavy rain we had this morning, this might not be hard to imagine here. you are driving down a blinding rainstorm. all of a sudden, your car is underwater. >> jadiann: yeah, terrifying. that is exactly what happened to one woman in st. petersburg. >> it started pouring rain. we just finished walking the dog. the next thing we know, we heard voices outside. we looked out the window. and this s.u.v. is in the creek here and the whole street is flooded. >> reporter: his first thought was to record the rescue with his cell phone. you can see the firefighters on the back of that s.u.v. >> one of the firemen were able to climb on top of it. he busted through the window with his hands and a small tool. >> reporter: first responders had to be quick. they had to operate in a safe manner. they would not have been able to help anyone if one of them had been swept away in the raining water. >> we had to improvise.

rope and personal flotation devices. we made sure we had anchor points and people on the outside. to make sure that no one drifted off. >> reporter: firefighters were able to get the 27-year-old driver to safety. paramedics transported her to a local hospital to get checked out for minor injuries. she is now telling authorities she was trying to make it to the ronald mcdonald house and was not familiar with the area. crews spent several hours at the scene removing the s.u.v. from the water. rescue crews say if it weren't for that metal beam holding the woman's s.u.v. up, it could have easily gone all under the water. >> anchor: breaking news in school. on draper street. unconfirmed report of carbon the fire department is on investigating what's going on here. as you can see, students are all outside at this time. we are not getting any reports that this is an evacuation. we are still looking into

today. sort of like september. jeremy, we have had all kinds of weather packed into one day. >> jeremy: we have, yes. right now mostly sunny skies. look at these temps. boston right now, at 71. beverly, 73. worcester, 67. some leftover wind from the storm last night. but thankfully, the numbers on the screen here not damaging wind. we will have this wind through the afternoon. a windy warm afternoon. winds will gust 20-25 miles per hour. actually, i think as we work toward midafternoon, you notice some thicker clouds back towards eastern new york state. that is actually a cold front. that is going to get rid of the 70-degree weather. but not until late this afternoon and this evening. as the front is moving across new england, there may be a brief shower and perhaps even a rumble of thunder as the cold front comes through southern new england. again, this will only last for about 10 or 20 minutes. then the sun will come back out. for the patriots game tonight, this will be clear. and cooling off. temperatures at kickoff, near 60.

happening today: the man accused of making an explosive threat at logan airport going before a judge. boston police removed the 55-year-old uxbridge man from the united airlines flight after he allegedly made a bomb mention during the boarding process. steve cooper has the very latest. vort it something you said, you used the wrong word? do you want to apologize for passengers? released on bail and dennis campbell had no comment on his threat onboard a flight at logan airport. the 55-year-old from uxbridge pleads not guilty in east boston district court. prosecutors say he told a flight attendant he had a bomb in his carry-on luggage while he was trying to jam it into an overhead compartment on a flight that was heady to push back from the gate. >> she reremarked he was able... this comfort responded "that's because there is a bomb in there."

ashamed of how this debate was handled. >> jadiann: a new boston-based film putting the catholic church sex abuse scandal on the big screen. the premier was in brookline at coolidge corner. this follows the "boston globe's" investigation into the sex abuse scandal that rocked the catholic church more than a decade ago. the story is an important one. >> by the time you get to the end of this movie, there is no doubt in your mind that this happened. the church knew. and cardinal law should probably be sitting behind bars instead of at the vatican living in a palace today. rarely, do you get to tell stories like this. as an actor. >> jadiann: the archdiocese acknowledged the crimes committed by clergy and the cover-up by church leaders. the archdiocese says it continues to focus on helping victims.

>> anchor: interesting. this whole week, think about where you started off. really cold temperatures. we are getting into 0's now. >> jeremy: look at this right now. 71 in boston right now. norwood, 71. october can be kind of cookie, whacky. because you have remains from the summer. then you have winter that is just so excited to get going. so you go back and forth until you get diemer into fall where winter does take over eventually. right now this afternoon, a nice warm afternoon. a little bit on the windy side. winds gusting right now around 25 miles per hour. even back into the worcester hills, southwest new hampshire, jaffrey, a gust to 28 miles per hour. that is the kind of wind we have for the afternoon. but those numbers, that kind might add is not a damaging wind scenario. that was out here with this weather system. this portion of the weather system coming at us in two parts. part one did all the damage with the rain and the wind. most towns pick up between one and two inches of rain. even a little bit more. and then winds were gusting for some locations between

25-45 miles per hour. now here comes the back edge of the weather system. this is the cold front. this may lead to just one more round of a few isolated showers. again, until that cold front gets there, we have a sunny start to the afternoon. as the front races across southern new england, i do isolated showers. we had one in pepperell. that has fizzled out. out. it is much skinnier than what that came through overnight last night. if and when you get tagged by this, you know, the skies may open up briefly for a minute or two. then the whole thing, i think, is over in ten or 15 minutes. that is how quick it is going to be. your chance of showers this afternoon, about a 40% to 60%. i don't think everyone will see them. as we work late entire the again, this would apply to gillette, looks like we are going to dry things out. there is the cold front behind the front. it is not bitterly cold. but it's just back to where we should be for this time of year. in terms of afternoon temps.
