inadequate response by the university president. members of the football team refused to take the field. by sunday, a campus sit-in had grown in size. the graduate student groups planned walkouts. politicians even started to weigh in as well. >> i'm resigning as vitapresident of the university of missouri system. the motivation in making this decision comes from love. maniu. columbia where i grew up. >> christa: once again, the president has stepped down that university. we will stay on top of the story and bring you the latest. >> jadiann: also at noon: state police responding to an accident on 495. this is in mansfield. this is at exit 12. you can see there that car completely flipped over on top of itself.

we have seen someone taken away on a stretcher. the crew is on the way. we will have more information as soon as it becomes available to us. >> christa: students are back in class after a scare at the boston arts academy. firefighters say students were exposed to hydrochloric acid. >> jadiann: crews remain on the scene right now. dan hausle has more on the breaking news. dan? >> reporter: a few personnel and school, police here. things finally calming down after an incident. another teacher tells me that apparently, this happened in a chemistry or science classroom. a problem with hydrochloric acid and fumes that caused the students to complain they were feeling sick. fire trucks and ambulances line the street outside the city's high school after more than two-dozen students complain they were sickened by acid fumes in the classroom. . >> we had 17 students

complaining of some symptoms. like headache, nausea. >> anybody transported? >> we are transporting 17. >> reporter: out of an abundance of caution? more caution than anything else. report tt fumes came from hydrochloric acid used in the classroom. something apparently, went wrong with the equipment used to handle the acid. machine. usually, they said it does vent. for some reason, there was residue left. some kids felt they were exposed to it. >> reporter: 25 or more students were affected. they were led off to ambulances and taken to boston children's hospital to be checked out. they appeared to be in good spirits. the teacher says the emergency was handled well. >> i was not evacuated. it looks like it was all under control. we haven't been told what exactly happened yet. >> reporter: all the students were expected to be looked at boston children's hospital.

into why some equipment malfunctioned to allow those fumes to get into the classroom. we are live from boston, dan hausle, 7 news. >> christa: a man from lynn charged with murder. about to face a judge. investigators say the 44-year-old james woodbury killed a woman in her apartment in lynn last night. the 55-year-old had been strangled. woodbury was watching tv at the time of his arrest. we have a crew in the courtroom for the arraignment. we will bring you more information as we hear it. >> jadiann: clear and cool outside. finally settling into normal temperatures for this time of year. now we have to talk about some rain moving in. here is chris lambert with all of that. >> jeremy: give that sunshine a little time to work in. look at. this already close to 60. in the southwest suburbs there. norwood at 59 degrees.

57 in boston. a comfortable afternoon. in fact, still several degrees above the average for this time of year. we averaged 54 in the city of boston. lots of sunshine. a few clouds mixed in. sunshine near day's end. the rain system to the southwest eventually, climbing in here. tomorrow afternoon, especially mid to late afternoon, the rain starts to work on in. tomorrow. i do expect wet weather to settle on in. as we get into tuesday night and even into wednesday morning here. gusty winds along the coastline. looks like a lot of us pick up a half inch to an inch of rain. gusts along the coast. we will talk more on the 7-day forecast ahead. >> christa: president obama and benjamin netanyahu meeting face-to-face today. this is the first time since the u.s. helped to broker a nuclear deal with iran. the two leaders have had fast strained relationship during the past, but both have down-played any tension.

obama commenting on the recent attack on a police training center in jordan. two americans and a south african were shot and killed. two other americans injured. americans and others at the training facility train iraqi police officers. and they say the gunman was a member of jordan's police force. he was either killed by return fire or took his own life. it is unclear at this point. the president, meantime, is promising a full investigation. >> two u.s. citizens were killed. and a number of individuals injured. the investigation is taking place, only. we take this very seriously. and we will be working closely with the jordanians to determine exactly what happened. but at this stage, i want to just let everyone know that this is something we are play paying close attention to. and at the point where the families have been notified, obviously, our deepest

also said the families, once again very, been notified. also on 7: boston mayor marty walsh has officially signed an ordinance banning replica guns in public. this comes after a tragedy out in cleveland last year when a 12-year-old was shot after waving a fake gun. let's go to victoria warren. you have more on this new ordinance that we signed. >> the ordinance goes into effect immediately. and the mayor says that this is important when it comes to from happening in boston. more work to be done. he says that this is a big >> there is really no difference between this and the gun that is on his holster. comparison. >> i wanted people to see that this gun looks real. it looks like a real gun.

>> reporter: but it's not. >> your kid shouldn't be running around the streets of boston with a handgun that looks real. >> reporter:, now if the fake gun isn't marked with a bright orange or red plastic tip, police will seize it. they can't criminally charge anyone. they will call the parents if child. >> we have had a lot of instances already where officers have used tremendous restraint and, you know, afterwards couldn't believe the they could have possibly take an young life. >> reporter: 153 fake guns, many used in crimes confiscated this year already. leaving city leaders feeling lucky a phony gun hasn't yet turned to a real-life tragedy. >> this is not a super-soaker. that can be a very dangerous thing on a playground. >> reporter: the fear isn't just to have a repeat of the kind of tragedy they saw in cleveland last year with the 12-year-old boy. they also say there is a real fire that if somebody pulls out a fake gun and they are confronted by somebody who is

armed with a real weapon, that that could also potentially turn deadly. live in roxbury, victoria warren, 7 news. >> jadiann: political and business leaders from across new england continuing to tackle the war on drugs. charlie baker was among those who focused on the region's opioid addiction problem. >> reporter: well, the governor wrapped up speaking here at the seaport hotel. this after he met with the state sheriff to fight the growing opioid problem. >> every one of us has said for the last two years, if only there was a statewide approach. if only we had a unified approach. we have that opportunity now. >> reporter: governor baker has proposed new laws that would place limits on prescriptions and would not allow doctors to give patients more than a 72-hour supply with certain exceptions. >> one thing we find very clearly, when people come into

pretrial... they are addicted to percocets, vicodin. it is a gateway drug. it is prescribed to them and it is a getaway to heroin. >> reporter: the number of people being arrested with drugs in their system has also spiked. >> somewhere between 40% and 80% of the population that comes in the front door needs to be detoxed and in most cases, more than half of that is the result of opiates. >> these people frequently are people who should not have the label of criminal attached to them. they respond to treatment. report tt sheriffs support and applaud the governor's efforts. >> too many of us have lost friends. our friends have lost children. the problem is, so many people are dying. everybody has to do everything they. can we have to start doing it now. >> reporter: many of the sheriffs say they have created their own task force already

through this afternoon. bulk of the cloud cover down through the mid-atlantic, that is an extension of the storm system, back through the carolinas and into northern florida. a couple of things going on down across the southeast. one, this area of low pressure with the front that is straight through florida. you look farther off to the south and east. there is the latest tropical storm of the season. the tropical storm is kate. this will curve back out to sea. it is not going to bother the eastern seaboard. but it is a separate system from the one that is going to be drifting up the coastline for tomorrow. this is not the cape. it is that rainstorm from the deep south. that will continue to lift north as the area of high pressure that is in control now flies off to the east. i do expect a dry morning commute tomorrow. there won't be wet weather for the morning commute. we cloud over during the morning hours. how, on the ride home from overspreading the area. the best chance midafternoon of any shower activity would be south of the mass. pike. especially down through buzzards bay, the cape and the

islands. connecticut river valley. as this whole area lifts off increased chances of rain everywhere. overnight tomorrow and into wednesday morning. this looks like it will taper off early in the afternoon on wednesday. however, a gusty wind throughout wednesday afternoon and cool conditions with a lot of clouds. some of the higher totals down on the cape and the islands. not a tremendous amount of rain. it will be beneficial. we haven't had much rain here in the last couple of weeks. how about that wind? gus 20-30 miles an hour. take a look at the 7 on 7 forecast. a few more showers rolling through thursday afternoon. that system slides off to the east of us. we are pretty much an easy

cool weather prevailing. right now officials are trying to figure out exactly what happened . before. it is devastating to me. >> reporter: the city is taking every measure possible to make sure the area is safe. as they investigate. >> what we are trying to do right now and what we did last night is try to provide public safety to our citizens. we called n-dot. they have come out to do a compaction test. everything was fine. so we have opened back up.

now. >> reporter: one video shows what appears to be a culvert that collapsed. the video shows the extent of the damage. officials are saying this is a 0-foot drop-off. initial estimates have the cave-in extending nearly 600 feet. officials are correcting that and they are saying it is 36 feet by 70 feet long. which is still cause for concern. >> i wouldn't consider it to be a sink hole. i mean, i don't know what you call it. i don't know what the definition of sink hole is. it is a problem. it is a major problem. but i'm not going to kalt sink hole. i'm not going to call it a cave-in. i'm going to call it an accident. >> reporter: the may wror says he is proud of the response time from emergency responders who worked to prevent further damage. as for bystander, it has become a sight for them to remember. >> this is incredible. i have never seen this before. >> reporter: it is really

police say someone took four shots at district judge friday night. it was a close call. police say the judge was injured in the upper body and face area. it was from scrap metal and glass, not a direct hit by a bullet. her injuries are said to be serious but non-life threatening. the initial investigation suggests she was targeted. she was just appointed judge in 199 by governor george w. bush. >> christa: in california, a lot of people speculating about what this might be. the military says this was a missile test done by the u.s. navy. the unarmed missile was launched from the u.s.s. kentucky off the coast of southern california. but it startled thousands of people who assault weapon it. and you might wonder why the missile was so close to land. >> jadiann: up next, which

boston area. wind out of the west, hour. we have warmed up quite nicely after the morning lows. 57 in plymouth. 59 in norwood. 58 in hyannis. a couple more degrees to go. then that is it. lower 6's this afternoon. still not too tough to take by mid-standards. a lot of sunshine now. us. and this is the leading edge of the rain that is going to be working up the coastline. as we go through tonight into tomorrow. for us, we will hold off and wait until tomorrow afternoon to start to see that rain overspread the area. this afternoon, 60 degrees. overall, though, the 7-day is seasonal. temperature-wise. one more chance of rain after tomorrow night's threat of showers. we will talk more about that coming up. >> christa: two officers were dragged by an s.u.v. after a traffic stop in mattapan. plain-clothed officer pulled

over the 45-year-old driver on blue hill avenue last night. when the officers leaned in to talk to him, that is when he took off and dragged them a hundred yards. the officers suffered minor injuries. police later arrested the he is set to be in court today. investigators are back at work trying to figure out what led up to a truck driving into the charles river, killing two people over the weekend. nicole oliverio has the story. >> reporter: driver loses control. the car goes off the road and plunges into the charles river. chris watched it happen. >> all i heard was a horn going off. i heard the impact. i see that that piece of bridge over there was crumpled by one piece into the water. then the taillights of the

truck went over. >> reporter: witnesses say it was ten minutes before dive teams could get to the two people inside. both rescued from the water. both later died at a boston hospital. the driver, 36-year-old was from rhode island. in a statement, his family said in part, you could always find brian on the floor being tackled by the other children at family events. words can't explain how much he impacted the people in his life. state police say he ran a red light, then sideswiped another car before his broke through the barrier and landed in the water. >> i think people should drive more safely. it says that cars are not going tos to be fooled around with. >> reporter: witnesses thought about trying to jump in before emergency crews got there. they just didn't know how and they didn't think they would be able to help.

news. >> jadiann: a robber on the run in tewksbury. police are searching for the man who robbed a gas station on andover street last night. according to the lowell sun, he waved a knife at employees. >> christa: a rhode island bus drunk. officers say she was about to pick up elementary school children and then teachers say they saw the driver stumbling off the bus. that is when they stopped her. >> we put our children's safety in their hands.

children as the way we would. >> reporter: nicole is one of the many rhode island parents upset tonight over the arrest of 27-year-old bus driver ayla under the influence. >> shock that somebody who i never had an issue with, that this would happen. and concern. my daughter does take the bus with her every morning. and i'm hoping this is an isolate incident. >> reporter: according to police, johnson made runs for lincoln high school and lincoln middle school, before arriving at northern elementary school. by first student transportation who was contracted to provide school district. in a statement, the lincoln superintendent says, "johnson has been permanently barred from driving for lincoln public schools." back in february of 2014, a lincoln middle school history teach every, christine clark was accused of drunken driving. mail box on her way home from school. >> she was always so friendly

with the winds. ... with the kids. my son loved her. >> she was always so pleasant. always so nice. hi, how are you? it is not something that i was ever expecting. >> jadiann: two officers arrested for killing and shooting a six-year-old boy during a police chase, set to appear in court. they are held without bail and face charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder. meanwhile, a funeral for six-year-old jeremy mardis is set for today in mississippi. the little boy was killed after a police chase involving his father. the boy was shot five times in the head and chest. his father was seriously wounded. body camera footage from one of the officers on scene is what led to that arrest. the two officers haven't told

investigators why they were trying to pull the father over. >> christa: now across the country. a massive fire taking over a tire shop an an apartment complex out in san francisco. started at the tire shop and then they tps... the large flames started at the tire the roof collapsed. the cause is still under investigation today. also, the clean-up continues after a train carrying crude oil derailed in wisconsin. officials say a dozen cars went off the tracks sunday. only one of them leaked oil. that hole has been sealed. company says no more than a thousand gallons spilled. 35 homes near the area had to be evacuated as a precaution. and sadly, four people are dead, including a child after this fiery crash that happened just north of washington, d.c. at least three vehicles, including a passenger van collided sunday. eight adults and six children were all taken to the hospital critical condition this

afternoon. >> christa: a wild scene for some shoppers in texas. this 800-pound alligator made its way into a home depot parking lot. i don't think there is an alligator parking spot there. >> christa: the scene is so wild. the parking lot, the person sitting on hill. the blanket. oh, my goodness. even when the pros stepped in, they realizeed this gator was was not going down without a fight. here is jonathan hall. >> reporter: a texas alligator hunter and officer team up to tie up an 8-00-pound 50-year-old alligator. his eyes are covered up. challenge. >> we tried to do a front catch with him. taped. he was so big. his jaws were too big for my hands. i couldn't get my hands to fit around his mouth. >> reporter: this big gator was close to people. >> we have tried several attempts on how to catch him. finally, we thought we had him wore out enough where we might be able to put two people on the back of him and hold his

not saying we love that. >> chris: temperatures in the 70's. it's been dry. you know, we need some rain. we could use it. you go back into the first of the year. 7-8 inches behind in the rainfall department. the dry stretches really starting in may. then we had some over the summer and again this fall. bottom line is, it is unseasonably dry across much of eastern massachusetts. a moderate drought. where you see this beige shading here from essentially, southern maine back through the merrimack river and down into most of connecticut. we will take the rain if we can get it. we don't want too much too fast. we are not going to get it all at once. that is for sure. not much going on right now. temperatures climbing into the low 60's this afternoon. mostly sunny skies. more clouds filtering in late overnight tonight. those clouds thickening up tomorrow. here is the wall of water that we are watching down through the carolinas and extending all the way down into florida.

in the bahamas. system. that will stay out to sea. the system that we have separate from this tropical storm. bother anyone along the eastern seaboard. what do we expect tomorrow? well, as we get into the early afternoon hours, i wouldn't be surprised to see some rain starting to approach buzzards shore, the cape and the islands. most of the rain for a lot of us will occur close to the evening commute. close to dark. through tuesday night into wednesday morning. again, a half an inch, to an inch of rain. could be locally higher amounts. down across the cape and the islands. that is where we will see the strongest winds on wednesday as well. guing over 40 miles an hour across the cape and the islands. the immediate south shore, 30-40 mile an hour gusts. north shore, city of boston, a to rain to talk about today, though.

clear evening. increased clouds late. 5-45, the overnight low. clouds thickening up tomorrow. afternoon showers break out. most of them across southeastern massachusetts midafternoon. thereafter, i think anyone is fair game. steady rain at nighttime into the evening hours. the forecast, secondary shot of some showers working on through thursday afternoon. behind that front, we do dry it out going into next weekend. >> jadiann: well, the license plates on the limousine carrying j.f.k. when he was assassinated have sold at an auction. heritage auction says the plates sold saturday for $100,000. the bilier has been described as a "high-end kennedy collector." now, according to the auction house, when the vehicle was sent for its upgrade, the limo company's owner retrieved plates from the trash and passed them down to his daughters. >> christa: starbucks is being accused of waging a war on kri mass. some christians are calling for a boycott.
