woman in lowell. a risky reaction caught on camera. a grandmother scaring off burglars with nothing but the sound of her voice. and caught in the act, a church volunteer caught on camera after taking money from church collection plates. we can dry out tonight before more showers come in tomorrow. first at 5:30 a game changer for one man playing call of duty on-line. competing against a woman in lowell when she suddenly mentioned she was being hell against her will. >> steve cooper live in lowell with the latest on this strange story. reporter: it is strange. ryan, police in lowell say this was a first for them but it also was the first for this pennsylvania man who tonight is speaking out, explaining why he did what he did. >> i'm not a hero. i just did my job.

video game call of duty, kevin told us by phone from pennsylvania he knew his call of duty was to call police when a woman in lowell he was playing a game with told him she was being held against her will. >> we're trying to get her out of a bad situation. reporter: police responded to this wilder street apartment where it turned out the woman hadn't actually been kidnapped but she was in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend. 25-year-old jose white ended up in court on drug charges and assaulting a police officer. investigators also seizing this replica ar-15 assault rifle from the apartment. >> this is the first time through an on-line game. reporter: gamers we caught up with said they were pretty impressed he did what he did, alerting them a woman may have needed help hundreds of miles away. >> usually when you hear

could stop her. a man had the orange tip painted black which makes it more real. this arrest comes in the same week that mayor marty walsh signed an ordinance banning handguns in public spaces. this suspect is facing a couple of charges and will be in court tomorrow. in medford, john cuoco, 7 news. veteran groups walked through the wind and rain from boston comn to city hall plaza to celebrate all those who served. mayor matter walsh joined in on the festivities as well. veterans today received a framed certificate and pin as a thank you for their service to our country. one veteran is happy to see fellow servicemen and women being honored

aggravated assault. a kansas man who admits he's a white supremacist said he wanted to jill jewish people before -- kill jewish people before he died. there are new details on the deadly metro jet investigation in egypt. u.s. investigators could soon get a chance to look at physical evidence from that crash. u.s. officials believe a bomb most likely caused the crash. a source says egypt has accepted the ntsb's offer to investigate. the ntsb is now reportedly waiting to find out when and where the plane's engines will be exam examined. turning to other news across the country. >> shots fired! shots fired! >> a police chase in utah leads to a

a high-risk parolee inside just drove away. the suspects were caught the next day after a second police chase. a deadly explosion in new jersey kills one and leaves a dozen injured. the blast happened on the second floor of the home there. crews do not know what caused the explosion. officials say at least two homes will have to be demolished. the other ten are being treated at local hospitals. new york city police are trying to figure out what caused a driver to crash into the water. helicopters, drivers and police flooded the scene there. they eventually found the man who was pronounced dead at the scene. this isn't the first time an accident like this has happened. at nighttime you can't see anything. they either need to put more lights or even put concrete barriers right before you get to the end because this happened too many times already. >> that city's mayor

says changes will be made on the same day of the accident. a dangerous encounter caught on camera when a gutsy granny takes law into her own hands. a group of men break into the woman's home living room and that's when the 78-year-old woman ran out scaring them off. >> i opened the door and i started down here and i saw them. >> bumbling burglars made just enough noise to wake the wrong person. here. >> the thought of three burglars harming her didn't cross her mind. >> all i knew was they were in my house and they needed to get out period. reporter: one guy rang the doorbell several times. >> surveillance cameras captured this guy heading outside to signal other. crowbar in happened, he grabs her purse and

78-year-old's daughter and husband, well-known attorney john messina, are balancing the terrifying ordeal with a little humor. >> my mom was joking with the cops about how bad her hair looked when she came out. >> she's been that way since the day i met her. >> thank goodness everyone is okay. the intruders did get away with $20 and a pair of earrings. caught on camera two thieves break no a car dealership in utah. you can see the thieves kick in the door, then use a saw to break in the safe. police are still searching for the burglars. a distracted bus driver causes a close

church volunteers under fire after what some are calling a sneaky sin. that man was caught taking money from the church collection plate and stuffing it in his pocket. >> little did he know he was being recorded the whole time. reporter: the sounds of pray, singing and the church organ. reporter: are all things you might expect to hear on video recorded during a church service but sunday at blessed trinity, what they say on a surveillance camera many might consider sinful. chief leaders asked them to step in after they became suspicious after the collection during services. they say this video

activity and sprinkles down on the south shore and you see this little leg of shower activity just holding together enough to get you wet into the emergency make valley, southern new hampshire and up to maine too. it's fading quickly. it's not completely done though. manchester to about portsmouth and elliot, maine we still have a couple sprinkles and showers. this is it it, the last gasp of the weather system. in the 40s now, falling back into the low 40s. still some gusts of wind at 20 miles per hour in boston, 30 miles per hour in hyannis. we did have gusts that closed in on 40 in nantucket. elsewhere a good breeze and west of the city we do have some gusts to 20, 25, even 30. but that was about it. it wasn't all that will powerful in the wind, that's for sure. clouds, clouds and more clouds. you wake up to them, you have lunch with them and then you'll dine with them tomorrow night. then the showers move in with they see clouds.

act of kindness. a runner fell flat on his face. >> the officer not taking part in the race joined him arm and arm helping the runner reach the goal. >> my face feels all right but my calfs are kind of sore. reporter: over the weekend with less than a half a mile left, mccoy collapsed, busting up his face and leaving his knees blooded. i knew i had to get up. i was kind of doing it for my dad. my dad died april the 30th of this year and i was trying to get up and get it done. reporter: he drew motivation from his dad who passed away after a battle with cancer. what he didn't know is he would not have to face this on his own. sergeant john cain came running to his help. >> hearing his plea to finish the race, i knew i had to help. reporter: several people tried

to tell mccoy to stop and stay down to get help but the duo pushed on. >> he goes i want to run, i want to run. i said not too fast. you're going to leave me behind. reporter: mccoy doesn't remember much but he remembers those words pushing him to finish. >> i don't think i ever got to thank him there at the race at that time because they threw me in a wheelchair right away and got me to a medic. reporter: the story and picture has gone viral. >> it's emotionally touched me to the point where i feel it here. >> running keeps me going. i just want to run. i'm not used to a lot of the media. i just really want to run. reporter: so if a picture says 1,000 words, well, you get the idea. and there's more to the story. a couple days later mccoy went to the police station to give officer his race medal
