7:08 am
we don't have a specific threat stream or specific evidence in front of us, but there is always, as we've said to people for years, the threat of some actor, some lone wolf person, someone who slipped through. that's the world we're living in today, and we understand that. ever since 9/11 many experts across the united states, without regard to political party or to elections, have consistently said to us it's probably not a question of if. it's a question of when. >> well, let's talk -- >> now, we have every single effort being made by homeland security, by the fbi, by interpol, by intelligence communities to exchanging information, and people are working hard at this, and we have averted many different plots against the united states. >> let's talk about this strategy against isis. in recent days isis has managed to pull off attacks in paris, in

beirut and brought down a russian jetliner. by definition, doesn't that just show that u.s. policy is not working, that there needs to be a better strategy? >> what it shows is that isil has not yet been defeated, and we understand that. regrettably for four years this war in syria has been going on and people have been traveling from all over the world to the amazement of many people, but they have been traveling even from the united states to go fight in syria. so some people have returned to their homelands, and they have been taught the trade craft of terror regrettably, so, no. we've only had the coalition against daesh for one year now. we put that coalition together a year ago when daesh started to move through the region. >> but mr. secretary -- >> and the fact is that during that period of time about -- let me just finish -- about 25% of
7:10 am
controlled has been ten away from them. leadership has been eliminate the from the battlefield. whole towns and communities have been eliminated. the answer is no, it has to be picked up. the pace has to be picked up and more needs to be done, and everybody understands that. >> you know, picked up territory in other countries, they have expanded into other countries during this time that we've been fighting them. the president talks about his critics popping off and saying they have a better idea, but he's getting criticism from former members of his administration, leon panetta, the former cia director and defense secretary, hillary clinton, his former secretary of state, a top counterterrorism official in his administration michael vickers as well as dianne feinstein who is now the intel chair of the senate saying it's not sufficient. it's not enough, and it's not happening fast enough.
7:11 am
i just said to you i don't think fast enough. we're escalating our steps. the president even in the last weeks before paris took place made major decisions to put additional people on the grounds, special forces and took additional steps, some of which i can't talk about on the line here, but he has already been taking additional steps. now, yes, isil has brought in people in other countries. it hasn't expanded by moving to those other countries. it has taken terrorists who already exist in those other countries and they have pledged loyalty to daesh. that's different, and we know there are people who are terrorists in libya, in yemen, in afghanistan and other places. what daesh has succeeded in doing is attracting them because of what they have been doing on the ground in syria and in iraq,
7:12 am
attacking them in syria and iraq, and i am convinced that will increase even more so in the days ahead. as i said to you, a year ago there was no coalition against daesh. >> in a word, sir, is isis gaining strength? >> i believe isis is going to be defeat the. isis is not ten feet tall. i have absolute confidence that as we increase what we are doing today, as there is more now. here. arabians. everybody. there is a united front, and i am absolutely convinced that daesh will be defeated and there will be increased steps taken in order to do so, and what we need to do is not succumb to fear.
7:13 am
people need to not panic. there is a strategy in place growing by the day, and i have no doubt whatsoever that with the help of all the nations that are united against daesh they are going to be defeated, and we're going to do everything in our power to hasten that journey. >> secretary of state john kerry, thank you for your time this morning. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> we should mention when secretary kerry says daesh, same as isil, same as isis, different names for the same thing. >> another term, exactly. >> interesting to hear what he had to say. the paris attacks are changing the conversation on the campaign trail where donald trump is stirring up another controversy, and this morning new poll numbers show he has a sizable lead in the republican race. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has more on this. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hi, matt, more evidence this morning that republican voters want change over experience. for the fourth straight month they believe donald trump is the man for the job.

u.s. and candidate john kasich said that's unacceptable successfully flat out reject the idea we have them register. >> reporter: and he suggested we bring back water bush boarding. >> water boarding is peanut compared to what they do to us. >> reporter: and defending his you be substantiate the claim, he saw thousands and thousands of people celebrating the destruction of the win twirs. >> they were cheering as the world trade center came down. >> reporter: police and city officials say there's no evidence that ever occurred. donald trump has stirred up another controversy by re-tweeting a racially charged image that compares black on black murders to police killings. a couple problems here. the figures are not acura. they overstate the number of homicides committed by blacks, and the government agency that's listed there at the bottom, well, it's not actually an
7:16 am
agency that anyone can say exists. matt and savannah. >> peter alexander on this story. peter, thank you very much. >> as we mentioned, this is a holiday week. nearly 42 million people expected to travel in the coming days so al, you're on. what's the weather going to be? >> one half of the country looking pretty good, the other half not so much. let show you what we got this past weekend. we told you about a big snow storm coming out of the west, and it blanketed the midwest and the upper midwest at well. chicago picking upwards of 20 inches of snow in the suburbs and more is on the way. before we get to that, look at all this cold air. there's some 29 million people under some sort of a frost or freeze watch or advisory. 0s as you get into the great lakes. even as far south as atlanta. 31 right now. 33 in mobile. tallahassee at 40 degrees. look at watches and warnings now stretching across from texas all the way to the southeast. that's going to continue through the morning hours. you can see temperatures well below normal for this time of the year, and we ear also going

8:36 am
celebrities, rock stars. what's the common thread it. >> the common thread is everyone has a little bit of geek in them and i'm there to find it and celebrate that fact. i think many people who are in the fan base of the guest might not even know that fact. >> one of the things that you do you is like to have a comedian on the panel in some place. why is laughter important when you're teaching the lessons of science. >> i mean, i've been a professor for most of my life and find that people remember things best when they life or at a minimum when they smile and i thought in constructing the show that if i had a comedian as a professional stand-up comedian, not the kind to do heard the one about -- not that kind of comedian, the kind of comedian who observed culture enlightening about it, so i have a professional comedian who is my co-host and i see them as a levity valve and put it together with the gravity valve and i'm

8:38 am
year that 2,000 more planets to add to our catalog of star systems. >> and you know the most popular question for you is. is there any different having sex in space? >> oh, that one. >> if you're weightless in space, yeah, you need a lot of straps and things to hold things down because -- no, no, you learn newton's laws of motion firsthand when that happens, and there's a lot of recoiling, and then i figured some people might have straps anyway, you know. >> so we've all heard of the mile high club, the million mile high club is a little more -- you. >> need some tools and apparatus for that. >> i've been a fan of yours for years and years. you make science fun and you help us learn. >> 20 years ago. i have to look at my records on that. thanks for your interest in the universe. >> catch star talk sunday nights on the national grow graphic channel.

>> up next marlo thomas kicks off our season of thanks and giving.
8:40 am
8:45 now. back with our annual tradition thanks and giving where we highlight the remarkable work and this morning marlo thomas opens up about how her father danny thomas started it all. >> here we go. >> my father founding st. jude's children's research hospital is a very personal story. he was a child of immigrant lebanese people. they had no money, and they grew up in a neighborhood where nobody went to the doctor. children in the neighborhood died of -- of appendicitis and influenza, and i think he care ed that all through his life. >> he was a struggling young comedian without any money and
8:41 am
first baby was about to be born, me. and he -- he needed $50 to get me and my mother out of the hospital, and he went to mass that sunday, and the sermon was about st. jude. patron of the hopeless cases and he thought who could be more hopeful than me, so he took sench his $10 out of his wallet and put it in the basket and a little prayer we made was dear st. jude, i need ten times this hospital. if you will help me and give me a sign i'm going in the right direction, some day i'll be able to do a shrine and next day he got a phone call to play a singing toothbrush on the radio, and the pay was $75. that was his sign. and then something else happened that really changed things for him. he read in the paper about an african-american 8-year-old boy who was hit by a car in mississippi and he died because no emergency room in mississippi would take him. my father started to form the
8:42 am
hospital so that every child of every race and religion would have an equal chance at first class care. he put it in memphis which is the hub of the south, st. jude became the first fully integrated hospital in the you he wanted to create a place where no family would have to pay for travel, or food or housing or treatment. my mother's idea was to build a hospital to help children with hopeless diseases, but this wonderful progressive doctor said to him if you really want to help children, don't just build a hospital, danny, build a research center and a treatment center under one roof. >> i never thought i would live to see st. jude hospital built. >> when it started, it was only 100,000 square feet, and today it's 3 million square feet. my father told my sister and power and me that after he was gone st. jude would not be our burden to carry and i think we were relieved because it looked like a lot of look. three months after my daughter
8:43 am
died i went to st. jude and i was emotional going out and i went inside, a party going on and all these little kids were running around and having a wonderful time and i said whose bird day is it? it's not a birthday party. it's an off chemo party. you don't need chemo anymore >> and i just started to cry. i've never seen anything like this. all these children deriving strength from one child's turn for the better and their parent standing by with tears in their eye because they felt that this child did and maybe their child would, too. it was a turn point for me and i knew right then that i would be involved. >> marlo thomas is with us now. good morning. >> good morning. >> if your father could see it now. >> well, it's amazing, that's a wonderful story about how we started, but just this past wednesday we treated the first child ever with our proton beam with the smallest proton ever created on the planet at
8:44 am
st. jude. means we can target cancer and not kill any of the good healthy tissue around it, and the other great thing is our genome project. every child that comes to st. jude has its genome mapped so we can treat that cancer and defeat that cancer and, therefore, any child who gets that cansler also have that same treatment. this is what's happening now. very exciting. you've been there. >> known each other for a long time. there's always something you say to people. come see it. >> yes. >> and it's amazing when you go through there how your view changes. >> you know, i was thinking as i watched this, in 1962 when my father opened the hospital, he would walk through those walls and almost every child would die, and now his daughter, 52 years later, almost every child that i meet in those halls will have the chance to live. what can be better than that? >> and there's no better advocate than you, marlo. thank you so much. up next, we're going to do a little cooking prior to the thanksgiving holiday.

8:48 am
salt and pepper. if you don't season this bird ahead of time then you've missed the boat. >> this is the time to do it. >> generous. >> hit it. >> go crazy. >> absolutely. >> while you're doing that. >> i'm going to go ahead and stuff this. i've got onions and lemons here, use any heir matic that you like. >> okay. >> completely up to you. >> and just salt and pepper right here. >> this is pillow case you're talking about and i know people get a little squirrely when we case. >> i'm thinking fire. >> going to do a lot of things that will help this proses. >> and could you use cheese cloth if that's more your speed. >> i'm not saying don't go to the bed and get the pillow case you've been sleeping on, clearance 100% cotton pillow case and we're going to keep it very, very moist. >> what's the bacon doing? >> wonderful bacon, allen benton is my good friend and makes it in tennessee and it's smokey and it is delicious. >> yum. >> i don't know but, but butter
8:49 am

8:50 am
we'll remove this, and then we're going to unwrap it, and flip it. >> this i got to see. >> savannah, if you don't mind getting on this side. >> it's hot as the hinges of hell so you have to be really careful. >> if you don't mind pulling the pillow case on to the sheet. like a family team building activity. >> there we are. look at that the. >> flipped it right over. >> so now we're going to take this, it's a little bit messy but it's worth it. >> okay. >> this goes back into our oven. >> okay. >> let's pull that out from under there and we're just going to brown it. >> i'm out of town. our res see on today.com. elizabeth, thank you. >> savannah, thank you.
