let's focus on what's happening across the islands. these pulses of rain coming off low pressure. again, not a lot of wet weather around boston up to the north shore, up into northern new hampshire. it's been spotty. it's been misty. it's really not even enough to make a puddle in some cases. but going through the night tonight here we are, the first wave of the heaviest rain will be right near midnight, then that breaks up in the early morning hours. we get a little bit of a wave moves in about 7:00 and 9:00 tomorrow morning and goes through the day. tomorrow is essentially washed out with these pulses of rain rippling through here. our temperatures now a little chilly. lawrence and worcester, just above freezing. just the lowest lows of the atmosphere are cold. boston. we'll check those temperatures and how they go up and down in

also tonight breaking news out of new hampshire, firefighters running into trouble as flames transform a bedford home into an inferno. there were no hydrants close to the home so water which means the fire quickly spread. jonathan hall is live. reporter: they are still fighting the fire. we're being kept about a quarter mile al way as the crow flies. you can see those two hydrants there. they've been busy. a fire truck left here not too long ago as they shuttle water close to the scene. you need a constant supply of water to fight a big fire like this one and that's proved to be a challenge. sky 7 over a raging house fire in bedford, new hampshire where people made it out >> i haven't spoke to them but i'm sure it's a them. reporter: the 6200 square foot

the smoke and the attic and flames shooting through the roof. it was quite the challenge for about 60 firemen. >> very difficult once it gets in to suppress those fire conditions. reporter: an even bigger challenge, no hydrants. pumpers and tankers from a dozen nearby towns had to drive about a mile to these hydrants to shuttle water to the cul-de-sac. they put the water in a pool and a single engine scene. no firefighters are in the building. operations. the investigation into the cause is under way cooperating. it is cool. it is not windy and there's some light rain hampshire. in bedford, i'm jonathan the red sox just made a major signing, a free agent.

bedford as they sat in the courtroom and listened to the terrible details of his alleged killer. here's some courtroom video, the son and daughter of the 66-year-old from new bedford left the courtroom in tears as the gruesome murder were revealed. police say he was a taxi driver in retirement and police say that on saturday night he picked up mills and a 16-year-old he was with. police say that mills had them drive them to a parking lot in bedford where he shot them. he's a retired veterans agent, a vietnam veteran and was very well known around the area as an advocate for veterans. here's what the prosecutor had so say. >> the defendant shot him from behind once in

he got out of the car, your honor, from where he was seated directly behind him, the defendant went to the driver's side door where the window was partially lowered. he placed his hands on the window, the location where this defendant' fingerprints were recovered. he then shot again from while he was standing outside of the car. reporter: authorities say that mills has a long criminal history and that he was supposed to be in dys custody, department of youth services custody, until he was 21 but they say he took off from the facility in november. he has been ordered sent to bridgewater state hospital for competency evaluation. the 16-year-old was arraigned earlier in juvenile court. that's the latest live from new bedford, byron barnett, 7 news. attorneys for the danvers teenager defense.

history of mental illness. steve cooper live in salem tonight with a look at today's reporter: eight separate witnesses were called to the stand today at the chism murder trial. that included family friends, relatives and several students from danvers high school all called to the stand by the defense. >> here's my beloved grandson. reporter: the defense calls philip chism's grandfather to the stand as they begin to build their case that the 16-year-old accused killer was insane when he murdered his math teacher inside danvers high two years ago. >> he was very quiet kid, very, very quiet, and a beautiful soul. reporter: chism's grandfather testifying both his wife and one of his daughters suffered from psychological issues over the years but when pressed by prosecutors he couldn't remember the last time he saw chism prior

>> how long had it been grandson? >> quite a while. jersey high school students were called to the stand as were friends of chism's mother when they were living in tennessee before the family moved to danvers without dad. >> did you notice any change in philip's behavior or trouble with philip's behavior before the move to massachusetts? >> i didn't notice anything. reporter: but under cross-examination, sabrina carter, whose son was best friends with chism in tennessee, testified chism and his mother weren't always close. >> for a while it was hateful how philip treated his mother. >> there was a time where my husband addressed it with him, that if he was going to stay around and come around, he had to be respectful to her. reporter: jurors will listen to testimony in the morning and then under heavy security, they will be taken over to danvers high school which is the scene

we're live in salem turning now to the fight against isis, the u.s. military announcing new plans to step up the there. the pentagon isn't saying how many people will be part of this new wave but the troops are expected to be on the ground playing a very active role. >> these special operators will over time be able to conduct raids, free hostages, gather intelligence and capture isil leaders. >> the newly-deployed troops will add to the less than 50 forces sent to northern syria last month. also on 7, chicago mayor rahm emanuel taking action after a deadly police shooting. forced to resign, the mayor also announcing the creation of what he's calling a police accountability task force.

here with the latest. reporter: governor deval patrick who was born in chicago will be serving as a senior adviser to the task force. calls their chicago police superintendent gary mccarthy's resignation have been constant. >> the public trust in the department has been shaken. >> i formally asked for his resignation. he has become an issue rather than dealing with the issue. reporter: earlier tuesday in an interview with a local nation, mccarthy defended his actions. >> i didn't have the authority to do what people thought i should have done. reporter: but also admit aid press release said mcdonald fired at him after he lunged at them was wrong. mccarthy said in the 14 months since the shooting he never

now 7 weather with chief meteorologist pete bouchard. our showers will be tapering late tonight and we get a little bit of a break before we talk about the second wave moving in tomorrow and that will become steadier late in the day and possibly heavier too in some spots. milder air for some. we're not sharing the warmth here everywhere in the viewing area. it's the first day of winter, meteorologically speaking. get on the band wagon. astronomically, we talk about it starting on the 21st and going into mid march. wow, that's a long stretch. isn't it. for folks saying, well, slow start but remember winter's long here in new england. we have february, march still al head. i think the back end of winter may be a little more interesting so to speak than the front end being december and into january. for of i'm seeing, it's very mild for the beginning of this month. we've had moderate rain

focus in on that. low pressure is to the south of the islands right now. the closer we are to low pressure the better your chances for getting a good dose of rain. elsewhere, where you see the warmth is where it will stay through the course of the storm. where it's cold and raw it doesn't look like we'll budge these temperatures tomorrow. this low pulls away and another wave of low pressure comes in for tomorrow. i think that one's more significant and more wide-spread rain too. so tonight's showers taper off tomorrow. the rain begins and then looks like it wants to fizzle but i'm still confident we'll have some moderate rain at times into the evening hours. that is one of the models that's kind of the outliar here. once it passes it will crank up across northern new england. then it taps into some cold. for us in southern new

it's a return to sunshine on thursday. high temperatures tomorrow, there they are in the 40s to near 50. 53 in plymouth. about 51 in providence and much earn 50s out to the cape. there's your wamth. 40s nashua. highs thursday, this is a little bit of a misnomer here. in the afternoon they will start falling. as that low intensifies across northern new england we'll fall back into the 30s and upper 30s by evening. 47 to 33 tonight with occasional rain, tapering off. sounds like a convoluted forecast, i know. once we get past this, it's going to cool down for a little bit. above normal for the weekend. warmup and it's quiet. no major storms either. see you at 5:30.
