can you elaborate? >> i'm not an expert on it. it is my understanding that three pipe bombs were attached together. somehow attached to this remote-control car. the device would trigger or set that device off. we don't know if they attempted to do that and it failed or what the story is. it was found in a bag. at the scene. i'm going to let the f.b.i. the go. >> pro is not confirmed. we don't have any information >> pros. or any cameras of any sort. >> based on the interviews with all the eyewitnesses, can you tell us exactly what happened in the room? do you still believe there was a dispute and they left and came back? this seems very much pre-planned? >> so we have people in the room that have indicated that the suspect was in the room during the early part of this
12:47 pm
there was a county public health christmas holiday type gathering luncheon. that is what it was. he was part of. that he was there early on. and he left. we did have some initial information that he left under some kind of duress or as if he was angry. we have somebody else say that, you know, he kind of disappeared. we don't know where he went from there. i don't know that we know enough about that yet. we will confirm that he was there early on. we still don't have the motive. the building that this took place in, i'm sure you guys have aerial views of what it is. this took place in the southern most bidding on the property. the doors that they entered were located on the east side. so they entered from that parking lot into those east doors which went directly into the room. which is where the shooting
12:48 pm
those doors were unlocked. they sprayed the room with bullets. i don't know that there was any one person that was targeted. they killed 14 people there. >> is there any idea how long... how much time lapsed? >> i meant to follow up on that question. yesterday we had information that it was anywhere from 10-30 minutes. ly try to tie that up later on in the day. we said yesterday that there appears to be a degree of planning that went into this. nobody just gets upset at a party and goes home and puts together that kind of elaborate scheme or plan to come back and do that. there was a plan. (inaudible) >> i don't think we are far enough into the investigation to really definitively say
12:49 pm
or every place they have been or what they have been doing over the last several years or months. that is the part we are still working on, though. >> did he have a grudge against coworkers? >> not that i'm personally aware of. at some point later today, we will have a comment from his employer and we will talk about some of those issues. it is my understanding he was still an employee of the county. the guns were legally purchased. the two handguns were purchased by him. the rifles were not. but those are components we are still following up on. all four guns were legally purchased. (inaudible) did he have a record? >> there is no criminal record that we are aware of.
12:50 pm
we are told there was a license plate. excursion. the big expedition. i'm sorry. black ford expedition. a rent a car. he represented it. three or four daysgo. it was actually due to be returned yesterday. that is why it had utah plates. it was rented locally. >> he traveled overseas. is there any connection that something was planned... that. those are things they are working on. our plan today is we are going to do a morning press conference. throughout the course of the day, the sheriff and the coroner's office is going to start releasing the names of the victims. we have been working throughout the night to get identity of those folks and then make notification. we will start to put those names out here fairly soon. we will probably to... try to get the pictures out as well. we will come back and do a
12:51 pm
throughout the course of the day, we anticipate we will start releasing the names of the victims. several of them are county employees. >> can you talk a little bit about the community and how you see them being able to move on past this in the coming days? >> you know, i read an article by one of the reporters in the sun this morning. and she talked about the resiliency of this community. everybody knows san bernardino has been beaten up with the bankruptcy and some things that have hit this community. economically, this community has been hit hard. this is a resilient community. we will survive. this we have had an enormous ground swell of support from neighboring communities and well-wishes that have come in from all over the place. i do know that there is a vigil planned later tonight at the stadium on east street. you will see evidence there of a tremendous amount of support. and people are going to come
12:52 pm
as as the officers, everything that i have seen and all of the officers from my department, they are doing extraordinarily well. i'll tell you, i'm incredibly proud of the way our folks responded. not only the initial response here and the help we got from our local and regional partners. but for the way they also engaged in that officer-involved shooting and chased down the suspects. that was nothing short of heroic. i'm extremely proud of the way they handled that. >> the guns were legally purchased. is it legal to have those guns here in california? >> i think there is some question still about whether they were california-legal or not. we have not gotten to the bottom of. that i will let atf address that later on. we do know at this point the four guns were purchased. appeared to be a legal purchase and appeared to be registered. >> were the officer wearing body cams? >> none of our officers have body cams. i don't know about the other agencies.
12:53 pm
they had a six-month-old childment. i'm not sure exactly where the child is. i'm not aware of any law regarding restrictions on the amount of ammunition. i'm not specificly aware of anything against the law there. >> what else have they found beside the ammunition? >> so the suspect... both suspects were listed on the rental agreement for the property. as i said yesterday, i don't know that we can definitively say that they were living there or living elsewhere. and what exactly that house was used for. the house became a focus of the investigation based upon information that we had from witnesses that identified him as an employee that was there. it was follow-up that we had done connected to that person to take us to that house, led us to that vehicle which resulted in the following pursuit and the shooting that happened.
12:54 pm
involved in that, the house became a primary focus. we took our time with securing it. we cleared the house safely. we discovered the other pipe bombs, and i think, some other evidence, cell phones, things like that have been recovered from there. and various other items. there is a lot of helpful information that we have gotten from a number of areas. . >> how many people were going in and out of that house other than the two people that lived there? was there a pattern of men, women coming and going? >> we have heard the rumors you guys have heard. we have some information. we are still trying to verify. that keep in mind, i'm pretty careful here. information that went out yesterday is likely to change today. and tomorrow and so on. i mean, already the wounded number has changed. i want to be as accurate as we possibly can. a lot of that becomes speculation and i would like
12:55 pm
it. so there has been a number of electronic items from thumb drives to computers and cell phones that have been taken. i don't ship we have completed the analysis on them yet. i don't know what they have completed yet. real quickly, day from the f.b.i. is here. he has a few comments. i will let him do. that and then we will fin arab few more questions. >> was there surveillance at the building? >> it is my understanding, there was no specific surveillance inside the room where the shooting took place. we are, however, in possession of surveillance cameras from the area. we are still going through that evidence. >> good morning. i'm the assistant director in charge of the f.b.i. in los angeles. i want to focus on two points. first off, again, our hearts and our prayers are with the families of all these victims of this very heinous act. secondly, i ask you to be patient.
12:56 pm
little bits as we can as we ascertain more and more facts. as you can tell, by this investigation, and even the media response here today, this is not your average investigation. we have multiple scenes. we have many victims. and it will take time. this is a tremendous number of assets and resources being applied to this investigation. my focus as a fact-finder who works for an organization that is really fixated on facts is i would much rather be slower and correct with the information that comes out to you than fast and incorrect. it is incredibly important for us. because the integrity of this investigation is absolutely paramount as far as our concern. other than taking care of the victims. so we are applying a number of federal resources. we are continuing to work very, very carefully with our

department, the atf.
