theouple may hav been radicalized but now there are so many unanswered questions. adam williams joins us with what we've learned so far. >> reporter: nbc news is reporting that the two suspects may have been in touch with people overseas that the u.s. was interested in and in the l.a.area with people expressing jihaddist views. the f.b.i. says farooq went to pakistan and brought back his pakistani fiance last july. he married her here in the u.s. police say farooq was a county restaurant inspector in california and yesterday he left the health department christmas party at the inland regional center then came back with officials say that is when the couple began firing inside with automatic weapons and left behind three remote control pipe bombs that never went off. eightack left 14 people dead and another 21 injured. dozens of first responders rushed to the scene setting up medical units in the injured. when police caught up with

later farooq and his wife fired 76 shots at police. officers fired back killing the couple inside the car. investigators found more than 1600 additional rounds of rifle and hand gun ammunition while investigators gather more evidence, the f.b.i. says the motive for the massacre is still not clear. >> there was obviously a mission here. we know that. we do not know why. we don't know if this was a, this was the intended target or if it was something that triggered him to do this immediately. that is going to take time answer. >> reporter: additionally investigators say farooq legally bought the two handguns the couple used. the rifles the couple fired were also legally purchased, but by someone else. at our breaking news desk adam williams, 7 news. >> ryan: the trial of philip chim continues today. he is accused of raping and

>> kim: the judge hearing from a psychologist about chim's mental state. steve coop ser live in salem with what happened in court. >> reporter: a lengthy hearing here today that went on for more than three hours this afternoon. the defense trying to build their case that their client was insane at the time of the murder introducing the word "schizophrenia" in the trial but prosecutors weren't buying it. >> i just frustrated at this point by the consistent back of professional courtesy. >> reporter: temper flares from the lead prosecutor saying the case aagainst accused philip chrisism. a hearing by video hook up. the defense is hoping the judge will allow two expert witnesses to psychiatrists to testify when the trial resumes on friday. both experts who studied m.r.i.'s done on chism recently testified

contribute to schizophrenia or at least suth a past head injury. >> we're not asking the court to admit evidence that because mr. chism has these abnormalities of the brain that he has schizophrenia but, but only that it's consistent. >> reporter: the prosecutor looking to block the testimony grilled thics pert and when asked if schizophrenia can be diagnosed with be a m.i.r.answered no. >> is there a real risk that either the defense in closing or this jury in deliberations will misuse this evidence as a doing sis of schizophrenia which appears no where else in this case. >> reporter: in the end the judge deciding late this afternoon siding with prosecutors here that those expert witnesses for the defense will not be allowed to take the stand in this case. testimony resumes in the morning and we're still told that jurors should be expected to get this case and begin their deliberations late next week. live in salem, steve cooper,

>> ryan: rookie gill ann okofor has been suspended after getting in a pair of fights. he faces a suspension after getting in a fight outside of a nightclub. it. m.z.posted this. the 19-year-old will face charges. >> kim: also on 7 threats of violence in cambridge leaving several schools on alert. police are taking e-mail threats seriously and have added security. victoria warren reports from cambridge with more on the new measures. >> reporter: bomb sniffing dogs searching cambridge public schools before the sun even came up. students and parents greeted with a heavy police presence after an. e-mail threatening that someone was going to shoot up the school. >> i received the message today. maybe the school was closed but it's open. >> reporter: this is the second e-mail threat this week, tuesday an anonymous e-mail threatened to bomb a school. >> scary. they're asking me if they could stay home, but i think they need to go to school.

in school? >> yes, sometimes. >> reporter: parents unsure if they should have closed the school. >> it's a stuff decision but i mean it's probably just a hoax but you never know in these times. >> clearly it's not a normal day. >> reporter: superintendent young says some parents choose to keep their kids home. he says the extra security went as smoothly as possible, and keeping school open was a difficult decision. >> this is the challenge here of how, do you give in and what do you invite by giving in? there is certainly palpable fear. on the other hand that is counterbalanced by a palpable sense of relief particularly thanks to the police. >> reporter: cambridge police will be on alert all kay. parents holding their children a little tighter before they say good-bye. >> i was like hey, where is my hug. >> i have trust in our police officers and everyone else keeps their kids safe. >> reporter: police say they not only believe these two e-mail threats this week are connected but they

chance they're connected to an e-mail threat received back in november. their investigation continues. in cambridge, victoria warren, 7 news. >> ryan: a roxbury home up in flames. crews on the scene putting out a housefire on east cotton street this morning. the fire started on the second floor and spread through the roof. fire officials are investigating how the fire start and say around a half million dollar of damage was done. no one was hurt. salem police making five ship listing a-- shop lifting arrests. three of them tried to leave a macy's with thousands of dollars of stolen items. the other two were waiting in the parking lot. police sate group was taking orders and running an on-line store with the stolen items. >> kim: an escaped prisoner is on the run out of ludlow. police are searching for this man, 23-year-old akeem gram. he was supposed to start a one-year sentence yesterday but police say he slipped

pretending he was a visitor. >> was placed if you will in our open booking area. and the fax that he was in a civilian clothes, was able to walk down, if you will, and follow, if you will our pedestrian traffic that was a perfect storm. >> kim: gram was kicked on felony young charges. he is from springfield and that is where police believe he may have been heading. >> ryan: agency in crisis that is the secret service. the agency has beenplace g -- has been plagued by many things. nbc's brian mooar has more on the report from our nation's capital. >> reporter: when a connecticut man vaulted over the white house fence on thanksgiving day it was the latest in a long series of embarrassments for the united states secret service and a now report out today finds the agency needs to be saved from itself.

the situation is getting worse, not better. >> reporter: the bipartisan report reveals previously undisclosed breaches in security lapses that could have endangered president obama. >> they had a lot of people with guns near the president that the secret service didn't know had guns. how does that happen. >> reporter: the report blames devastating budget cut for leaving the agency understaffed an overworks and calls for the president to push for urgent changes. the secret said our leadership has long ack knowledged -- >> does the press still have faith in director clancy? he does. >> reporter: this new report finds troubling evidence the secret service may not be up to a mission where failure could have
