it's also possible this was workplace related. >> reporter: police say farooq, a county restaurant inspector left a health department christmas party at the inland regional center and came back with his wife. the two sprang automatic weapon fire that killed 14 and injured 21. then leaving behind three remote control pipe bombs that never wept off. >> there was a mission here. we know that. we do not know why. we don't know if this was the intended target or if there was something that triggered him to do this immediately. we don't know. >> reporter: when police caught up with the couple's rented s.u.v. hours later farooq and his wife fired 76 shots at police and were killed as police fired back with almost 400 rounds. inside the car investigators say they found more than 1600 additional rounds of rifle and handgun ammunition. at the couple's house police found another 6,000 plus round of ammo. plus at least a dozen pipe bombs along with tools and materials to make more.

and they could have continued to do another attack. we intercepted them before that happened. >> reporter: family members say farooq travelled to saudi arabia on a religious pilgrimage. the f.b.i. says he went to pakistan and wrought back his pakistani fiance marrying her in the u.s. relatives say he grew a beard but they never saw any signs of his reported radicalizing. >> i've no idea, why would he do that? why would he do something like this? i've absolutely no idea. i'm in shock myself. >> reporter: president obama says no matter what the motivations for the shooting it's more evidence for the need for new gun controls. >> as the investigation moves forward, it's going to be important for all of us including our legislators to see what we can do to make sure that when individuals decide they want to do somebody harm, or make it a little hard are for them to do it because right now it's

>> reporter: a friend says farooq met his wife on-line. an nbc news reporting that a dating profile that appears to have once belonged to farooq contains a description saying he came from a religious but modern family and litted eastern and western mix under his family values. dan hausle, 7 news. >> kim: we're learning more about the remote controlled bomb that the gunman left blind there. cheryl fiandaca joins us with new information and details. authorities are finding boston marathon bombing and this one. >> reporter: 7 news obtained intelligence reports released about the california incident. in them police say lightly defended locations will continue to be targets for those intense on committing violence. the california attackers came prepared for battle with thousands of rounds of ammo and the pipe bombs. the suspect left an

kill and injure fir responders. this was a well planned event. >> they were prepared for sustained engagement. sustained combat engagement. that is what that tells me this. is a significant amount of ammunition they had exit plan. most active encounter shooters up to this point terminated at either contacts with the police or with a self-inflicted wound. this didn't. >> reporter: part of the strategy was to detonate the three pipe bombs they left behind for police and sources say a remote control for the device was found in the suspects' car and sources say it was similar to the devices the boston marathon bombers used. that is not the only similarity. police found 12 other bombs in the couple's home and sources say the home made bombs were like the ones used by the tsarnaev brothers in the ingredients found using those bombs were found on the al-qaeda

called inspire. police are continuing to gather evidence and looking into whether the pair had any accomplices. intelligence reports say with the amount of preparation and purchasing of chemicals, tactical gear and ammunition heightens the need for vigilance for citizens and others to report suspicious activity. >> adam: hours after the chaos many families were left waiting helplessly for loved ones, any information about them. the names of the victims slowly are being released. tim caputo joins us now with more on the lives lost. >> reporter: this attack happened at a holiday party. a bomb who was' supposed to get an award for employee of the year was shot three times. she will survive. we're learning more about some of those killed. many of the victims knew the alleged shooter. co-workers say he was difficult to engage in casual conversation. nicklaus worked as a restaurant inspector. he is one of the first of the 14 killed to be

friend say two weeks ago he got into a heated conversation with farooq about islam. farooq apparently argued it was a peaceful religious. this man's wife says he was a devout jew and passionate about pro-israel causes it's not clear if that was a factor in the attack. the father of 6 who supervised a team of health inspectors was alsole killed as was the 42 man who ran the center's coffee shop where he trained disabled employees. 21 were also injured but survived. their stories are coming out including many shot on their lunch break. >> he was able to make two phone calls, one to his wife and one to his father and to both of them he said that he had been shot. but he was going to be ok and the he loved them. >> reporter: one of the survivors shot inside the office building has ties to

amanda gaspard worked had keene has a emergency preparedness coordinator. she is expected to make a full recovery. tim caputo, 7 news. >> kim: president obama calling on government officials to lay down the law on gun control. there have been hundreds of mass shootings in the united states this year and some are questioning political leaders and whether they're doing enough to keep americans safe. jennifer egan joins with us that part of the story today. >> reporter: yesterday's mass shooting in california was the sixth in a week and in 2015, there have been more mass shootings so far than days in the year. colorado springs, san bernadino, the list goes on. this year alone, there have been 355 mass shootings in the u.s. once again the debate about gun control is taking center stage. >> it is basic steps that would make it harder, not impossible but harder for

>> it's three -- >> reporter: guns continue to be big sellers. at hunter trading post in weymouth the owner sees more customers in his store the day after a mass shooting. >> reporter: what do you see? >> it increases sales. we've more and more people that want to get licenses and everybody is very well concerned. >> reporter: according to congressional research numbers, there are more than 300 million guns in this country. gun laws vary state to state. as governor baker points out, massachusetts remains one of the toughest states for residents to get a gun. >> in massachusetts and california both have among the strictest gun laws in country. and i support them and believe this them. >> reporter: in massachusetts there is an application through the local police department. a firearm safety course and state and federal background checks. a process state figures show more and more people are going through. >> they're looking for a hand gun that they can

more than one a day. no surprise at california, we've already started doing what we usually do. arguing about gun control which never gets us very far and probably never will. because the only way to have significant gun control is to change the second amendment of the constitution which says "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." do you believe the constitution is going to be changed? me neither. and even in it were, that wouldn't keep all the people who were willing to get guns illegally from getting them. that is why if you were even a little shocked or surprised when you first heard about the california shooting, foreign news organizations weren't. here is how the british broadcasting corporation the b.b.c. described the san bernadino shootings. >> just another day in the

>> adam: suspect is blind bars facing charges in connection with the shooting death of a local commuter rail conductor that happened on thanksgiving day. dominique carpenter grady of dorchester was arraigned earlier today. prosecutors say the 29-year-old suspects and another man got into a gun phyte outside a bar near fenway park early on thanksgiving morning. jephthe chery of hyde park was caught in the cross fire. police say the 29-year-old was shot and killed as he was leaving a private party. detectives are trying to
