>> 11:45 on this friday morning, and we're following breaking news in boston, atlantic avenue is what we're looking at. news of a suspicious package, and we have seen police officers out there, and if you take a look here on the bottom half of the screen, we just passed it. and there was a robot, they removed a suspicious package and take it into this wooded area. you can't see it too clearly, but the trees, this is the financial district in the seaport area, and this is creating a lot of road closures, and right now live on the scene, john, what can you tell us? >> napsi, good morning, and atlantic avenue is closed. let me give you an idea of
11:43 am
we're going to zoom into a white suv with a flatbed truck behind it. this is just adjacent to the coast guard headquarters in boston, and also to james hook lobster, a landmark here in boston. and right behind that white suv, that's where somebody had placed a suitcase. somebody had called in and caused suspicious, and then the bomb squad showed up. through the trees, you can see a bomb technician right there, walking across the street, and he's one of the people trying to examine this suitcase, to see if it was left there innocently or if it was something suspicious, perhaps an improvised explosive device. let's go to sky seven and show you the scene, and at one point, a robot picked up the suitcase, picked it up gingerly. it picked up the suitcase and took it across the avenue and to rose kennedy green bay.
11:44 am
and at some point they may want to explode it. they don't know at this point. nothing official from the police, here in. so here in downtown cross being, we're seeing an air choked with traffic, and the bridge on seaport village is closed. and you can see it's closed to traffic. heavily armed police here, the swat team is here with automatic weapons, and we saw school children trying to get by, just a sign of the times here in boston. the kids walking by, and the police with automatic weapons and ordering them to seek another route and get across the street. so nancy, back to you, obviously a tense scene, and we don't know what this is at this point. >> you mentioned several buildings in that area, the coast guard headquarters, and you have j hook lobster, and at this point, have there been any
11:45 am
i know that there are so many office buildings as well. >> you know, that's a really good question, nancy. i have not seen any people outside of a building. it looks to me that there have been no evacuations to this point. certainly the streets are blocked off. and the police are here. [ explosion ] looks like they just might have blown up the suitcase. i'm assuming that was a controlled explosion, but that was -- the police are even smiling. that kind of shook everybody up. right there, a big boom. >> reporter: to put it in perspective, john, we just saw it right here, the wooded area where they took the suitcase, is that the rose kennedy green way right there? >> yes, it is, in the old days, it was an expressway, an elevated highway.
11:46 am
now become the rose kennedy green way, and as you see, that's where they had the explosion. >> the officers had a smile when the explosion happened. and what's their mood right now after the explosion? >> well, i can tell you that everybody jumped a little bit. we have an officer guarding right here in front of us, and he just sort of -- he just sort of jump a little bit and moved a little bit. so he certainly is a little bit on edge. >> sure, absolutely. it's it's startling. >> we're going to wait to see, nancy, whether this was a controlled explosion, or whether it was something that might have blown up inside of the suitcase. i can tell you that the controlled explosions that i've seen didn't sound that loud in the house, that was quite a
11:47 am
>> and a lot of people are entering now as well. >> i would say so. traffic flows, and people wonder >> anchor: jonathan, i don't know if you can understand, but the robot is moving closer to the device now, so we may be happened. and that was as you mentioned a controlled explosion or not. we have sheryl standing by with to. and sheryl, you're on the phone with us, and i know that you have a lot of sources in this area, and what can you tell us? me. a man walked up to this homeland security suv and left a bomb there, and ran away quickly. a machine was brought in to x-ray what was in the box, and they saw what they thought was a power cord and pyre. now, that doesn't necessarily mean that it was a bomb or anything like that. >> it could have been a fake device, it could have been wired
11:48 am
but because of all of things going on in california, taking no chance, they had a controlled exploration so they actually blew up that device. and at this point, they will now go in and examine it to see if it's a real device, or whether thing. but they have already put out a picture of the man seen leaving the scene. so the police have a good look of who that is, a white male, and that's all of the information that we have. it was a controlled explosion, and the man walked and up left a box right here at the homeland security van and walked away quickly. it showed a power source with wires, but we don't know if that was a bomb or some kind of a all. this was a controlled explosion, so they blew up this device, and
11:49 am
look at this and see if there was something to this, or if it was nothing at all. >> and the greater information for us, sheryl, because i believe that you probably saw and heard this along as we did with the viewsers, we heard the explosion live here on television, and john hall there on the scene, and he told us a little bit. and we were not anticipating it at that moment. we have someone walking up to the package right now, sheryl, and if you know anyone, or if your sources have been able to give you information, do you know what else they will do as this bomb squad member walks up to the device and what they're looking for, and what the events may be as we're watching it on live tv. >> whether or not this is a real or fake device, and after they blew it up. the other thing that they're doing is they are looking for the man that has the package, and the surveillance photo
11:50 am
all of the police in the area, so it looks as though they have an idea of this person, and they have a photo of who this person is, and they're actively looking for him. and they will look at all of the evidence to see whether or not this was some type of fake device that someone left there, or not a device at all. or whether in fact it was real. but all of that is going to take some time for them to look at it. the bomb squad is very meticulous about what they do, and the type of evidence that will help them determine what type of device this may have been, we want to be careful about this at this point. >> and sheryl, as you said, this was a controlled explosion that we saw live on 7 news moments ago as the crews approached that package.
11:51 am
think will look at that device. they say that it's suspicious, and some type of a device inside of t. >> and as you mentioned, sheryl, on that note, how common it is to have that whenever there's a suspicious package. and when we see things about suspicious packages commonly, do you think that there's heightened security around this incident because of the events the past week? >> yes, absolutely. to acknowledge that, and all of that is still being investigated. and they ask all law enforcement, and citizens to
11:52 am
they think are suspicious entering. because at this point in time, we're seeing a lot of incidents, and no one wants to take any
