>> this is 7 news at noon. >> christa: the man police say was behind a suspicious suitcase planted in the financial district last week going before a judge today. that package setting the city on high alert. police had to shut down streets and then the they exploded the suitcase. right now, the 50-year-old suspect is still behind bars. >> jadiann: that bail is set at $50,000. tim has the very latest outside the courthouse. tim? >> reporter: prosecutors say this suspect has a fairly long

crimes. while no explosives were found in that suitcase left by that s.u.v., today the judge still set a relatively high bail. prosecutors say james derepentigny admitted he placed the suitcase next to a homeland security s.u.v. the 50-year-old suspect gave an odd explanation to boston police. >> when the officers asked him more about the bag. he indicated he did place it at that location, to help homeland security. when he was asked further, at that time, he asked for a lawyer. and the interview ended. >> reporter: investigators believe this is derepentigny, captured by camera on boston's atlantic avenue. he hurried away from the s.u.v. after leaving the suitcase by the left rear wheel. the bomb squad blew it up as a precaution. the intentional explosion rattled workers in the financial district. even after it was discovered there were no explosives inside the suitcase. prosecutors say derepentigny told family and friends his

police were looking for him. he was arrested in lawrence after several people who knew him called 911. >> no comment. no comment. >> reporter: derepentigny didn't say anything in court. the judge set bail at $50,000. derepentigny has a few ongoing cases up in lawrence. as for this case today, they set the next court date as january 4. he will likely spend most of that time between now and then behind bars with the $50,000 bail. we are live from boston, 7 news. >> jadiann: now turning to your weather. sunny skies and relatively mild temperatures to kick off the workweek. let's get straight over to jeremy reiner for more on that. >> jeremy: 52 right now in boston. beverly at 53. on the cape and the islands, temps running in the low to mid-50's. and a nice day. much like yesterday. mix of clouds and sunshine. the clouds were rather thick this morning. they thinned out. so for the afternoon, a fair amount of sunshine. and looking good.

charged with first-degree murder in this case. and the city's police a result. f the attorney general says level of trust between law enforcement and the minority communities that they serve. >> the department of justice has opened an investigation into whether the chicago police department has engaged in a pattern or practice of violation of the constitution or federal law. specifically, we will examine a number of issues related to department's use of force, including its use of deadly force. >> reporter: that investigation will be conducted by the justice division. that is the latest live here at the breaking news desk, kris anderson, 7 news. >> jadiann: all right. thank you, kris. a new photo of the accused killers behind the terror attack in california now released. a photo was taken at o'hare international airport over the summer. syed farook and tashfeen malik

they are thugs and killers. >> reporter: sunday night from the oval office, president obama outlined his plan to threat. a plan that includes stepped-up air strikes, strengthening the cocoalition organization and continuing to train and arm syrian and iraqi rebels. his call for stronger gun laws. a key, he says, to saving lives. as the nation continues to mourn the 14 lost in southern california. there is a citywide memorial to the victims scheduled for later this evening here. jay gray, nbc news, san bernardino. >> christa: we are learning more today about tashfeen malik's past. investigators are looking at her upbringing in pakistan right now. from the home where she once earned a pharmacy degree, there is no hint that tashfeen gun-wielding terrorist. investigators in pakistan have

there is no link, said the interior minister, between her and extremists in pakistan. malik was private and religious. her pakistani identity card has one of her few public photographs. reports say she destroyed without a veil. at college, she was devoutly muslim but no supporter of violence. the university spokesman is adamant malik was not radicalized there. >> a radical approach, there is nothing like that. pakistan is shocked. "i can't believe it. she must have been influenced by someone." malik pledged allegiance to the leader of isis on facebook just before the massacre. it seems that no one suspected it. >> she was like the girl next-door. sweet, innocent, kind. the kind that is always smiling. you know, nice to you. you would never guess that that girl would have ties to isis. >> reporter: there is no

even knew who she was. meantime, the father of her husband syed farook is speaking out for the first time. he says that his son was shy who later became obsessed over israel's fate. he says that farook wanted to create an islamic state. much like the leader of isis. >> jadiann: senator elizabeth warren is weighing in on the deadly attack in california. she says gun control laws must be updated. >> there are things we could do right now. right now it is legal in the united states for someone in a terrorist watchlist to buy a gun. and we should change the laws on. that that makes no sense at all. that does not make anyone in america any safer. >> jadiann: warren says the u.s. needs a clear set of objectives in the middle east. >> christa: today officials reemphasize the need for help from the public. byron barnett joins us with the latest on. this byron?

exhaustive investigation. they have interviewed dozens of witnesses, followed leads in four different states. but still four years latter, the case remains unsolved. today authorities are putting out a timeline of events, hoping it will jog someone's memory. jack and jerry mcgee found dead in their andover home december 14, 2011. their lexus s.u.v. was also found torched on prince street in boston's north end. now the essex d.a. thanksgiving and the andover police chief are putting out new information, hoping it will lead to new clues that will solve this case. >> someone out there knows something. we are asking you to search your memory and your conscience, pick up the phone, and call us. >> reporter: the d.a. released a timeline of events leading up to the double murder. on december 13, 2011, jack mcgee went to a construction site in reading where his company was building homes. the d.a. says jack spoke to his son about picking up construction materials in boston. >> a long-time employ ye of

and assisted jack in cleaning out his chevy pick-up truck so that john could use the truck to pick up materials. jack reportedly left the site around 3:00 p.m. >> reporter: the d.a. says jerry was at home when her daughter called about havinger havey baby-sit the grandkids. he says holly thought she heard her father in the background during that call. the d.a. says jack's son was in the basement office at the home and left around 4:30 p.m. in his father's pick-up truck. the next morning, holly found her parents dead in their homes. >> understandably, the community was and continues to be concerned about the circumstances surrounding this shocking event. at the time of the murders, the circumstances were such that we believed there was no further threat to public safety . we believe that this is still the case. >> reporter: the family put out a statement today saying "we miss jack and jerry very much. not a day goes by without us thinking about how blessed we were to have had them in our lives."

crime are still out there and they need to be brought to justice. please help us solve this crime." that is the latest live here in andover, byron barnett, 7 news. >> jadiann: thank you, byron. than today: the final witness on the stand of the philip chism murder trial. chism is accused of killing colleen ritzer back in 2013. on friday, the psychiatrist richard dudley testified chism suffered from psychosis, a severe mental disorder. victoria warren is live for us outside the courthouse with the details on today's testimony. >> reporter: yeah. that last witness on the stand right now. her testimony comes on the heels of an intense cross-examination of dr. dudley. he is the star witness who has said that philip chism continues to hear voices. prosecutors asked him if chism has ever shown any remorse.

caused. >> reporter: you can hear the disdain as she repeats dr. richard dudley's words back to him. dudley is the star witness for the defense of teen murder suspect philip chism. dudley says chism can't be held criminally responsible for the death of colleen ritzer because he was in the throes of psychosis and hearing voices. >> had that been treated, he wouldn't have caused the difficulty that is he has caused. >> is that how he describes them, difficulties, dr. dudley? >> it is pretty hard for him to talk about that. report tt prosecution getting the dock to admit that philip chism made different statements about the voices. the doctor told jurors that chism's statements were all over the place and contrary to what his own counselor documented after his arrest. >> she was seeing philip chism almost every day. november of 2013, december of 2013.

two men trying to car-jack a woman saturday morning at an exxon gas station in tennessee. >> they had, it appeared to be a gun up to the lady. swrad police haven't confirmed whether these men were armed. you can't tell from the surveillance video. chuck white says that's what he saw. when the bus he was riding on just happened to pull up next to the men. >> she actually, let out a scream. that woman was being robbed. >> jadiann: video shows the men trying to break into an exxon employee's car first. but it was locked. then they ran up to this woman pumping gas. police say the woman's car was a manual and the robbers couldn't drive a stick-shift.

but for those types of charges, in fact, i, to put hands on a little kid for who knows what reason, that is just sad. >> reporter: the little boy is expected to make a full recovery. >> christa: investigators trying to figure out what sparked this home fire in lynn that turned deadly. they spent the weekend looking through the rubble of the home. it is a three-family and four people were killed there last friday. they are also asking anybody with pictures or maybe video that was taken moments before the flames broke out to come forward because they could help figure out the cause. a man in court in connecticut today. discovery. the 32-year-old is accused of staeing the remains of five bodies from a cemetery in worcester. a tip led police to a home in connecticut in hartford saying the man had skeletal remains. over the weekend, a woman also noticed a mausoleum at hope cemetery that looked like it had been broken into. according to police, he said

includes animal sacrifice and using bones as medicine. a neighborhood in swansey on high alert last night following an hours-long police police were told to stay inside, lock their doors after police say a man with a gun was making threats. investigators say this happened after the 24-year-old, a moo reen, got into a domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend and later turned the gun on himself. >> jadiann: polices in california have arrested a mother who buried a newborn alive. it is not clear what charges the mother is facing today. the infant is alive. >> christa: a man going to great heights in order to evade police in australia. the man scaled a crane and then started doing circus stunts. police below... people below were watching with high anxiety.

for hours. but police weren't too impressed with his heart-stopping stunts. here is nancy chen with more. a night on the town that ended high above it. as most people were climbing into bed, this man decided to climb something less comfortable. dangling in the sky, swinging from side to side. the 21-year-old showed no fear. using parts of the frame-like monkey bars, terrified last residents squeamishly watched on. police say the man was out with friends when he became separated from the group. somehow he ended up up here. for hours under... he sat perched in this spot, refusing to comply with negotiators. specialized police were sent up. he eventually decided to come down. sliding down the cables. after more than six hours, he landed in their hands.

he rezifsed arrest before being carted off the construction site. >> there is an element of danger. >> christa: once again, police are unsure why he went up there in the first place. regardless, he is facing several charges. including the possession of dangerous drugs. >> jadiann: happening today: a ceremony will be held in hawaii to mark the 74th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor. japanese warplanes attacked the military base there on this day in 1941. 2,400 americans were killed. 1,200 others were injured. the u.s. entered world war ii following the attack. >> christa: president jimmy carter is cancer-free. this is three months after the disease had spread to his brain. at his church. carter has been undergoing treatment with a new drug that cancer cells.

then thursday, the numbers will start to climb. back into the low 50's. jet stream, it looks like this. again, it is not allowing that arctic air up here to slow south. i don't think it's going to change over the next 7-10 days. what you see is what you get. yes, eventually, that will rearrange itself. speaking of the sunshine, going down today, for more on today's weather, here is danielle. >> reporter: mostly in the low really pleasant out there. we are hanging on to these one more day. then we are cooling down. as we head into tomorrow. tonight, the winds start to the south. they are getting up to 20 miles per hour. staying a little breezy through the overnight hours. they die down later tomorrow morning. part of the reason for these strong winds, we have this front that moves in overnight tonight into tomorrow. set in. again, not bitter cold.

then notice tomorrow, 11:00 south. we could see some showers on the cape. i think we are going to be dealing with the clouds in the boston area. and then that is moving out as we head into wednesday afternoon. today, we are staying mild, temperatures above average. in the low to upper 50's. staying cloudy and then the sunshine peeks through later on this afternoon. the winds pick up as we head into tonight. overnight temperatures, in the low to upper 0's. ... upper 30's. then, today we are in the upper 70's. tomorrow, dropping down to the 40's. average this time of year, about 44. we are pretty much where we should be. 57, your high today. staying above average. tomorrow, though, we are cooling down. 42, the high temperature. mid-40's on wednesday. a slight chance for a shower on thursday. back to the 50's. >> christa: all right, danielle. thank you. coming up, we are headed to the aquarium for who did it better. oh, look.
